01/ The Community(s) Care Package date: 25 oct - 20 jan | 2021-2022 academic year: y1s1 | masters location: copenhagen, denmark project type: academic group: 4 - Asbjørn Sebastian Falck - Felipe Sanchez Romero - Zoe George McQueen
About In Denmark, almenbolig is know for the resident democracy that is intended to govern it, creating a self-regulating system, financed by the national building fund. However, the many layers of bureaucracy means that the real engagement of the average resident is often limited. The parallel societies package severely undermines this democracy with the top-down implementation of policies and approaches without any concern for the actual communities living there. This approach is based off of abstract metrics and data which do not realistically reflect the community they portray. We want to propose a counter proposal, that flips this power relationship in favour of the community by utilising the established tenant democracy structure. This is done through the Community(s) Care Package

THE COMMUNITY(S) CARE PACKAGE
Counter to Parallel Societies Package
3
A housing association or group of residents can apply to the community care board, if the specific estate they live in has experienced problems, this could be high levels of crime, unemployment or a growing trend of residents moving out. With the help of a beboer coordinator there is an equal collaboration between the existing tenant board and the new community(s) care board.

figure 01 top Timeline of the Aldersrogade site
Site We have chosen the site Aldersrogade, which is located in outer Nørrebro, as an example for how this new strategy could play out. As it has been fluctuating between being categorised a vulnerable area since the parallel societies package was announced. This means there has been various attempts and tactics already implemented in the area.

Quality and visibility of existing public areas The site is a series of open courtyards, often connected by a through-building passageway, that are dark and narrow. The large amount of surveillance on the site, insinuates there is a lack of trust between the community and the housing association. There are already community spaces, however the main challenge of these spaces are that their visibility and quality is often lacking.

Site Strategies By working on four levels: a city, a neighbourhood, a courtyard and a building, we aim on creating a community environment which will let residents gain agency and belonging. Working on different scales allows us to propose solutions for different communal groups and avoid the one-size-fits-all approach which is evident in PC package.

01/ The Community(s) Care Package
figure 01 bottom City scale site strategies
Anchor Points The proposal is aiming to create connections along the whole site and its surroundings by joining its edges and creating a network of active anchor points.
Community Hub By relocating the existing Community House and adding an extension to the existing Integration Center and kindergarten a new community hub is created.
Pedestrianisation By gaining space from previous car parking, the main road Sigynsgade becomes a street where people, bicycles and cars coexist but ultimately benefits the pedestrians.

Courtyard Scale Development of landscape and social functions in Semi-Private areas.
Building Scale Development of co-working/ common facilities to ehance qualities of transitional space.

New Community Hub This plan shows the new relationship between the public square, the new community hub courtyard and the reconfigured kindergarten space. The community hub gains a strengthened connection to the new square by removing the existing fence and instead marking the transition between public and semi-private with a covered walkway. It also features additions in the shape of two new pavilions. One a library and the other for kindergarten activities. In addition to this we want to break up the pacing and flow of the street and intend to do so with urban furniture.

Courtyard Scale Sunken Courtyard The existing courtyard makes for a rather exposed space that might not inspire participation in every resident. We propose to implement more nichés along paths of movement to provide a place for pause or stay. The landscape leading to the community basement is sectioned by a series of ramps and staircases that double as seating areas. This makes it fully accessible and helps turn the community basement into a more visible space. With the open approach of the gardens it may encourage more informal and perhaps unexpected conversations. The community basement is given more spatial recognition by being part of the courtyard landscape.

11
Sunken Courtyard
Private garden extensions
Courtyard Network
In order to provide access and visibility to the existing community basement, we propose a re-landscaping of the courtyard, which includes sinking the courtyard.
Opening up the end hedges of the private gardens allows life to move more naturally from the edge to the centre of activity.
By enhancing quality of existing tunnel passageways the existing courtyard network becomes better connected and safer to use

01/ The Community(s) Care Package
Building Scale Live & Work Unit The existing passage is very dark and narrows in towards the middle making it feel claustrophobic. We suggest opening up with bigger windows, the cut corners and also adding a covered space so you don’t have to fiddle around with keys in the rain On the proposed plan you can see the co-working space on the right, which is for any resident that has a table there. On the left is a version that combines both living and working in the same unit. The north side of the passage leads to the sunken courtyard and community basement, while the south leads to the new community-hub.
figure 01 bottom Building scale strategies
13
Inner Glazing
Opening up the passage
Programme
To address the dark and unsafe feeling, we suggest to implement an inner glazing that will let light spill out into the passage.
In order to make the distance feel shorter, we propose to cut corners, which also makes it feel wider without taking too much interior space.
We also thought that a co-working space would be a fitting addition to the passage given it brings activity to the passage but the programme is to be decided by the tenant board.

About Falkirk being a town centralised around its high-street has seen a major expansion of retail sector. The ongoing shift from retail stores to online shopping is expected to heavily influence the highstreet and the town centre in general. Through this there is a need to provide alternative social activators for the highstreet as well as public attraction for the near housing to link it with the centre. As a result, proposed solution works to integrate existing housing to the high-street by linking the centre with the housing area to the South. In order to invite the public to use this link the project integrates a social hub district area next to the High-Street Steeple. The Social Hub Campus will have a role of culminating public activities in one area with diverse public facilities.

03/ Sybaritic Soundscapes date: 14 sep - 12 dec | 2018 academic year: y3s1 | bachelor location: Edinburgh, Scotland project type: academic group: 3 - Aitalina Semenova - Olivia Drave
About In order to turn collective hedonism into a productive design force, the group fabricated prototypes that operated in the studio, translating and emphasising the urban flow of leisure and hedonism by means of spatial interventions. We have explored sounds created by hedonistic activities of night life and realised that these sounds could be disturbing to people who live on such streets. In response to the found correlations, we developed a structure that creates an acoustic barrier between the noisy ground level of the Cowgate street and residential areas above. We wanted to allow people to have fun without neglecting the interests, comfort and well-being of others. Our site is the most visited area by students on a night out. Therefore, noise at night can reach disturbing levels. It is also inhabited by residential buildings such as student accommodations and hostels. Consequently, our architectural proposal acts as sound insulation and helps residential buildings be convenient to occupy. figure 01 bottom Atmospheric elevation

Recording Sound We decided to target the element of ‘hedonism’ ubiquitously present within bars and pubs around the city. We mapped out our route through approximately 25 pubs and bars scattered across Edinburgh. We decided that we would record a sound clip in each bar we visited. From collected data we then created a number of interactive digital experiences.

Conflicting Functions Through our survey of the different building functions on the street, we realised that there were conflicts of interest occurring on many of its intersections: mainly a conflict between the bars/pubs and the residential areas above. The sounds of Cowgate’s concentrated hedonistic activity can be very disrupting to the peace and comfort of sleeping residents.

Form Development The developed response to the found conditions of the street is a parametrically designed sound responsive structure with active sound insulation. The interactive canopy of the structure is designed to align with the facade line of the buildings and thus to work for the benefit of the residents. The canopy reacts to the acoustic level on the street based on the soundscape data collected in the first stage of the project.

Structural Design After doing our research, we came up with a strategy for assembling and securing the individual triangulated components, as well as a method of channelling air through the main body of the structure to supply the pockets with air for inflation. We considered how we could attach the structure to the facades themselves. We believed that diagonal braces attached to facade walls as well as resting central portions of the structure would be the most structural sound and effective method of achieving structural feasibility for our structure.
