Elements of Urban Design Studio Thread + Void GSD Fall 2012 Professor: Ginés Garrido Collaboration with Hao Chen The west Manhattan site acts as a void although it sits between very active regions of the city. This is due to hard infrastructural boundaries so how can we activate the site in spite of these boundaries? We can actually use the layers of infrastructure to create a multi-layered public space which houses new program such as an arts campus, to act as a hinge between two dominant art districts, and also a new bus terminal connecting to the 7 line extension, to free the ground surface from protruding infrastructure and provide needed bus parking. Through the horizontality of this new public space and a frame of tall buildings, our site then acts as a modern piazza and reestablishes the city’s relationship to the waterfront.

Comprehensive Design Studio Banding the Bowery Syracuse Spring 2010 Professor: Ryan Brooke Thomas Collaboration with Jamie Goldstein The NYC hostel design is centered on the wooden faรงade which carves into the building with bands of planters, encouraging interaction between hostel guests and nature. The breaks in the faรงade system allow for double height shared amenities such as a business center, kitchen, and gym to be embedded along the Bowery edge. The shared hostel zones offer a flexible, expandable environment that grants freedom of interaction between hostel guests, while the private rooms provide a more conventional experience.

street view (Jamie Goldstein) THE GREEN FACADE BEGINS TO CARVE INTO THE HOSTEL ZONE WITH BANDS OF PLANTERS, ALLOWING FOR INTERACTION BETWEEN THE HOSTEL GUESTS AND THE GREEN LIFE. WHERE EVER THERE IS GLASS, THERE IS WOOD. WHEREVER THEIR IS WOOD, THERE CAN BE GREEN LIFE. THIS PATTERN IS CONSTANTLY BEING BROKEN WITH THE BANDAGE OF PLANTERS AND SLATS AGAINST THE PROGRAM THAT LIVES BEHIND THE GLASS. THESE BREAKS ALLOW FOR MOMENTS OF PROGRAM TO BE EMBEDED WITHIN THE BANDS, CREATING ZONES OF PROGRAM THAT CAN BE USE BY THE HOSTEL GUESTS. THE HOSTEL ROOM DESIGN ELEMENTS ALLOW FOR A FLEXIBLE ENVIRONMENT, WHICH GRANTS FREEDOM OF INTERACTION BETWEEN GUESTS OF THE HOSTEL.

Reinstating People Space Syracuse Fall 2009 Professor: Tomà Berlanda Syracuse’s Little Italy neighborhood along North Salina St. was once rich with commercial and cultural activity but presently exists as a neighborhood lacking identity and vitality. This urban renewal plan reconfigures a pedestrian and bike friendly streetscape with multiple layers to address the decrease in vehicular traffic and reclaim road area. The streetscape expands into four large raised plazas and smaller infill plazas inserted in gap spaces within the urban fabric. Using the slope advantageously to place parking below, the plazas and buildings increase density with commercial and residential program.

NYC Summer 2010 Professor: Jon Lott Client: Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island Collaboration with Christine Min The Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island (COAHSI) was the client for their new headquarters at the Historical Lighthouse Museum site in St. George. Because COAHSI supports a great amount of visual and performing artists around the island, we desired for a great hub where COAHSI, the artists, and the public can gather and interact. Slicing through an existing brick building and physically pulling the plaza through to the other side, a network is created between the existing public plaza and commercial street. The once neglected plaza is charged with a new artistic energy and splits to house the artists’ production studio within. This transparent studio space allows for creative collaboration and exposes process and production as a new type of artistic display.

North Woolwich Precious Shore Collection Thames Syracuse London Fall 2010 Visiting Critic: muf art/architecture Looking closely at each site to extract a unique meaning is a key principle of muf art/architecture and our exercise in the town of North Woolwich, UK. When looking closely at the Thames shore I noticed an abundance of artificial make up including ceramics, metals, and glass, which can be attributed to the various industries that were historically located along the river. Collecting items from the shore which I found particularly interesting or beautiful, I first compiled a catalog of the items which details any history or research along with their physical characteristics. I then composed the pieces in an antique cabinet and displayed them as a small museum, bringing the museum and catalog to North Woolwich as on-site interventions and thus enriching a sense of place identity. The catalog shows how the individual parts are precious themselves, while the museum shows the added meaning of the whole collection.
precious shore museum
It could be part of a marble or a decorative add-on to a piece of pottery. The underside shows that it has been broken apart from another piece. I was given this piece by a local older man who saw I was choosing things from the shore and was originally going to keep it but decided to give it to me.
on site interventions
This piece of pottery has light and medium blue blotchy designs that look as if they were hand painted. This one is unique in that the designs are not patterns with sharp form but more blurry and fluid.

Marble Medley Medium: Watercolor Venice, Italy Fall 2012
On a visit to Venice with muf art/architecture, this painting is a complementary study to the North Woolwich project exploring how individual pieces are uniquely beautiful but form a greater meaning when composed together as an entity. This south facade fragment of La Basilica di San Marco was chosen because of the patchwork of marble from around the world.

Spatial Pulling of the Annunciation Medium: Soft Pastel Fall 2007
In The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, the biblical scene is intimately framed within a loggia, blending architecture and nature and allowing space to flow freely within the structure. I was inspired by the soft blended colors and overlapping layers in Richard Diebenkorn’s paintings and wanted to bring forth this idea of delicately overlapping spatial layers in my rendition of this painting.

VOLUNTEER WORK
Habana Works | Urban Studio Brooklyn In a team of 9 architecture students, I participated in a design/build project with the non profit organization: Habana Works. We built an outdoor classroom and rain water collection system for local charter school, Leadership Prep, in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC. In the vacant asphalt lot, we built the outdoor classroom bench system using recycled and reclaimed materials from Build It Green! NYC and the rain water collection system from donated sails. The space was finished with mulch and planters by local agriculturalists Urban Acres. Photos from: www.habanaworks.org
