Cross Country Fitness Students in Years 3 - 6 Day and Time: Friday mornings (7.45am – 8.30am) Venue: Figtree Oval Term: Term I commencing Week 5 Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: No charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: Fitness training sessions have been organised to help prepare students for the cross country and athletics season. Sessions will be varied and incorporate a range of fitness activities to develop strength, agility and endurance. The TIGS bus will transport students to School at the conclusion of each training session.

Football (Soccer) Students in Years 3 – 6 Day and Time: Everyday - lunchtime Venue: Junior School Oval / Rees Hall Term: Terms I - IV Number of Sessions: 5 per week Cost Per Student: No charge Permission slip required? No - Application form only Description of Activity: Receive coaching expertise from Junior School Master in Charge of Soccer Terry Robinson. Terry is a senior licensed football coach and will run a challenging and engaging program for our students. Students will be selected for the TIGS representative teams based on trials held during these sessions.

Athletics Students in Years 3 - 6 Day and Time: Friday mornings (7.45am – 8.30am) Venue: Beaton Park Term: Term II and Term III commencing second week Number of Sessions: 1 per week / 8 per term Cost Per Student: $10.00 per week Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: We have been fortunate to acquire the services of Lucas Chodat, a highly motivating Sprint and Personal Training expert. Lucas will offer a range of sprint moves to benefit those participating in ball sports and athletics events. The coaching session will include sprints, running drills and agility exercises that aim to increase speed over 5 to 60 metres and also athletic distances of 100 and 200 metres. He will do a range of activities in the coaching sessions to ensure improvement in technique, speed, agility, flexibility and core strength.


Morning Swim Squad Students in Years 3 – 6 Day and Time: Tuesday and Thursday mornings (7.00am – 8.00am) Venue: McKeons Swim School Unanderra Term: Term I, II and IV Number of Sessions: 2 per week / 18 per term Cost Per Student: $3 pool entry per session – coaching costs covered by TIGS Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: Morning Swim Squad was developed to support our swimming athletes who would like to take their swimming abilities to NASSA and CIS representative levels. Qualified coaches have been secured to train the students twice per week. At the conclusion of each trainin session, the TIGS bus will transport the students to School.

Touch Football Students in Years 3 – 6 Day and Time: Wednesday lunchtime Venue: Junior School Oval Term: Terms I - IV Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: No charge Permission slip required? No - Application form only Description of Activity: Develop your fitness and agility with regular Touch Football training held on the Junior School Oval every Wednesday. Games will be coordinated by qualified sports teachers to train students interested in competing at the NASSA Touch Football Gala Day.

Art from the Heart All students Years 1 - 6 Day and Time: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (3.30pm – 5.30pm) Venue: Senior School Art room Term: Terms I - IV Number of Sessions: 3 per week Cost Per Student: $35.00 per session Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: “Art from the Heart” our after-school Creative Arts tutoring programme will continue again in TERM I 2014 at The Illawarra Grammar School. Students will explore many different visual art techniques including drawing, painting, pastel, collage and ceramic sculpture. They will also be encouraged to foster their own sense of self, developing confidence through the exploration of the creative process.

Theatreworks Students in years 5 and 6 Day and Time: Tuesday afternoons (3.15pm – 4.15pm) Venue: IGC Backstage area Term: Terms I - IV Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: $17.60 per session Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: The Eaton Gorge Theatre Company offers weekly drama classes at TIGS. These fun and energetic classes will be led by actress Juliet Scrine and actor Ian McColm from Eaton Gorge Theatre Company. The program will also be open to students from other local schools. Young actors who participate will have the opportunity to build confidence, relationships and skills.

Yes Description of Activity: Students are encouraged to harness their sense of pitch through singing. The well rehearsed singing ensemble will be conducted by Mrs Carolyn Brown during the year and will perform at numerous School events. The focus of this ensemble is to encourage and secure part singing.

Yes Description of Activity: Junior School Concert Band is for woodwind and brass instrumentalists. It is a great opportunity for students to enhance reading and ensemble skills in a fun, supportive musical group.

Yes Description of Activity: Students who study music are active listeners and have highly developed creative thinking and motor skills. Infants Orchestra Students in Prep – 2 Day and Time: Monday mornings (8.00am – 8.40am) Venue: IGC Term: Terms I - IV Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: Free of charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: Infants Orchestra is for ALL instrumentalists – string, woodwind, brass players, pianists and percussion are all encouraged to join the orchestra. The Infants Orchestra focuses on reacting, listening and moving to music. TIGS has specialist teachers in the string, woodwind and vocal areas and all students enrolled in Prep are invited to attend this ensemble along with all students from K-2 who study an instrument with an appropriate tutor.

Yes Description of Activity: Junior Strings will provide an excellent springboard for young string players to improve their reading and ensemble skills. Violins, Violas, Cellos and Double Basses are all welcome. The Junior Strings ensemble will perform at many School events.

Yes Description of Activity: TIGS Junior Dance Company began in 2011 and has grown to become a strong part of the Performing Arts life of the Junior School and larger community. Participating students are given the opportunity to perform at various events throughout the school year, including local eisteddfods, school functions including TIGS Great Fete, and other high profile events including the KidzWish Foundation Christmas Party and Charity Ball held at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.

TIGS would like to offer the opportunity for students with an interest in another language to take advantage of Ms Godboles knowledge.

Chinese and Japanese Brush Painting and Calligraphy Writing All students in Years 2 - 6 Day and Time: Thursday afternoons (3.30pm – 4.30pm) Venue: MG1 Senior School Term: Term I week 3 to Term II week 2 Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: Free of charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: Students will be taught Chinese brush painting and Japanese Calligraphy over 10 weeks. They will create an artwork of combined brush painting and brush writing to exhibit at the TIGS Great Fete and in the Library. Places are limited and will be on a first in first served basis.

Yes LEGO® is a registered trademark of th Description of Activity: Robo Club is designed to encourage an interest in science and engineering. One of the goals of this programme will be to prepare the students to enter the FIRST LEGO League competition. This competition is open for students aged 9-16 and runs from September to December each year. Please note that younger children (7+) are very welcome to Robo Club – they just won’t be able to enter the competition.

GATEway 8 All students Years 5 and 6 Day and Time: Thursday lunchtimes (1.05pm – 1.35pm Bring your lunch!) Venue: 5S Classroom Term: Term I, II and Term III up till Week 5 Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: Free of charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: GATEway 8 is a competition to challenge and enthuse talented students in creative academic pursuits. The competition will be held between teams of eight students from participating schools who will complete eight tasks designed to stimulate the eight multiple intelligences outlined by Howard Gardner. Students will be selected for the GATEway 8 Academic challenge based on performance during class, and at the Thursday lunchtime meetings.


Tournament of Minds All students Years 5 and 6 Day and Time: Tuesday lunchtimes (1.15pm – 1.45pm) Thursday afternoons (3.145pm – 4.00pm) Venue: Various Classrooms Term: 4 weeks Term II and 4 weeks Term III Number of Sessions: 2 per week Cost Per Student: Free of charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: Tournament of Minds is a problem solving program for teams of students. It aims to enhance the potential of students by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. Teams will be selected and confirmed by the end of Term II. Not all students may be selected for the team. Parents need to be advised that if successful, teams will be required to travel interstate to compete in the National competition at their own cost.

Da Vinci Decathlon All students Years 5 and 6 Day and Time: Thursday lunchtimes (1.05pm – 1.35pm Bring your lunch!) Venue: 5S Classroom Term: Term I starting week 3, Term II up till week 5 Number of Sessions: 1 per week Cost Per Student: Free of charge Permission slip required? Yes Description of Activity: A stimulating, multi curricular interschool academic event, run in the spirit of the Olympic decathlon. Students from Years 5 and 6 compete in ten activities of a challenging academic and creative nature. The competition aims to encourage the development of higher order thinking skills and teamwork. Students are encouraged to apply, and the team will be selected based on performance during the Thursday lunchtime meetings and will compete at the Decathlon Week 5 of Term II.

Yes Description of Activity: Support group for students participating in the Stage 3 Mathematics Olympiad. Learn maths in a fun, relaxed environment and achieve great results in the competition.

Yes Description of Activity: The NSW Junior Chess League interschool competition is open to students in Years 3 to 6 with a basic knowledge of chess rules and who can play unaided. The competition is played on a home and away basis with parents providing transport to away venues.
