Issue 1 Term II, 2012

Academic • Christian • Caring

An Exciting Term Ahead The Term has opened with the great excitement generated by the completion of the transformation of the Library into a 21st Century learning space. All students have now had an opportunity to visit the Library and to understand the facilities available that will assist them in learning. Interest has been so strong amongst students from the Junior School that the number attending at lunch time has had to be rationed. Interest from Senior School students is also strong with the small group seminar rooms booked out on many occasions for voluntary group work. The project was completed on schedule and under budget (much less than the $1.2m incorrectly reported in the Mercury) and we thank all involved in successfully completing the project. Particular thanks go to the Construction Manager, Mr Pauls Matts, the School Property Manager, Mr Tim Oyston, and the Director of Information Services, Ms Leanne Windsor. The Library will be officially re-opened by The Most Reverend Dr Goodhew at 10.00am at the TIGS Great Fete and will be open for inspection during the fete. Archbishop Goodhew originally opened the Library, which is part of the Goodhew Research Centre, on 26 May 2001.

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

The Great Fete (Saturday May 19) is always a great gathering of the TIGS community. It is such a pleasure to reconnect with many past students, parents and friends of TIGS and to enjoy with them the wonderful talents of our current students and the many stalls and activities provided by parents. Many members of the broader Illawarra community take the opportunity to visit TIGS on this day and they are most welcome. This newsletter contains more information about the Fete, including online pre-booking of rides and ordering for some of the popular foods, such as our famous TIGS Sticky Date Puddings and Curries. There will be many opportunities to assist on the day so please let the School know if you are available to help. There are many other activities in the Term worth noting in our diaries. The Junior School Mother’s Day Breakfast (Friday 11 May at 7.00am) will be interesting this year as it is being organised by our fathers. A menu NOT based around the barbecue has been planned and we look forward to the opportunity of honouring our mothers. The Senior School Musical Production for 2012 is The Boy Friend. This musical comedy is set in the 1920s and contains some fabulous music, fashion and dancing from that era. The season is June 13 to 16 and tickets are available online here. It is sure to be a great night out and another opportunity to marvel at the talent of our students and what can be achieved when ‘excellence’ is set as the standard. Our students always rise to the occasion. One of the questions I am often asked each year about the musical production is why Year 12 students do not appear on stage. The reason is that our experience tells us that it is difficult for a student to excel doing both because of the competing demands on their time. Term II has an extremely busy schedule of Assessment Tasks and well-intentioned commitments to complete these at a high level and perform in the musical production are easier said than done. We look forward to last year’s stars joining us in the audience in June. Finally, the results of the online survey of parents conducted last term are currently being compiled. There were 820 responses from parents which is a wonderful response. Such support is greatly appreciated and will assist the School in planning for the future. Further consultation with parents, students and staff will be conducted during Term II. I look forward to sharing the outcome of the process with the School community. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Chaplain’s Message

“ The Power of One”

I don’t watch “Dancing with the Stars”. Some members of my family do, however, so I know a little of what’s going on this season. I know, for example, that Jessica Watson is one of the “stars” this season, that she had a poor performance last week, but that she turned it around this week. That’s typical of Jessica Watson. She is one of the most impressive people I know. I remember back to the time Jessica sailed into Sydney Harbour after over seven months alone at sea. What an amazing achievement. She was sixteen at the time. She had a dream. She set out a determined girl to realise her dream. She suffered some set-backs. She even had a false start. Many wrote her off. Some said she couldn’t do it. Some said she shouldn’t do it. Some attempted to stop her doing it. But she knew what she was capable of. She set out. And she achieved her goal. Jessica Watson sailed solo around the world at age sixteen. Jessica’s passion and commitment to her vision influenced many. It was said at the time that this one girl would transform the sport of sailing in Australia and renew the interest that had perhaps waned since our success in the America’s Cup in 1983. I don’t know whether that has happened but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Rev James Rogers Chaplain

God in the Bible has a fair bit to say about the enormous potential one individual has to change things for good. It encourages each of us to exercise this principle of the “power of one”. For example, we are called to live passionately for Jesus such that we might, in effect, sweep others up in our trail and cause them to be more devoted to him. One text which comes to mind is Hebrews 10.24 which commands us to consider how we might spur one another on toward love and good deeds. I am meant to influence you for good, as you are for me. We are to be intentional about that. Of course, our great example here is Jesus himself. When it comes to the “power of one” he is the ultimate example to us. So again in Hebrews we are told to “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and protector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12.2) Let’s be sure to do that - to fix our eyes on Jesus. It will lead to our great blessing and the ultimate blessing of those about us.

Senior School

There have been so many activities and events in these first two weeks: CIS Swimming, Duke of Edinburgh Training, School Photos, NASSA Cross Country, Art After Hours and a Year 10 Crossroads Meeting. But by far the biggest and most successful event has been the Tertiary Information Evening organised by Mrs. Murphy, our beloved Careers Adviser. This is such a unique opportunity for our students to learn and engage with representatives from Tertiary Institutions both public and private who provide the courses and career avenues best suited to our students’ needs. They could also learn first hand information from ex-students with whom they could identify and whom they would recognise. What a wonderful opportunity. Thank you, Mrs. Murphy. The following students have been nominated for Wave FM Youth Achievement Awards to be held tonight at Wests Illawarra. We congratulate all the nominees and wish them well for this Friday evening. Emily I’Ons and Thomas Bolt, both nominated for Academic Excellence Adrian Whitehall and James Early both nominated for Achievement in the Arts (ex-student Debbie Nielsen has also been nominated)

Monica Watt

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Dominic Mortimer, Isaac Kim and Thomas Dragutinovich, all nominated for Citizenship Awards Aaron Cannon, Jarrod Poort, Jonathan Fowles, Kieran Ackhurst, Tegan Richards and Jack Millar, all nominated for Sports Achievement Awards We are very proud of what you have already achieved. And on to another event which promoted pride: our Anzac Day Service. Anzac Day resonates so powerfully with all Australians and our sense of identity. For adolescents these days it seems to connect in a more profound way than ever before. It exemplifies and amplifies values of service, courage and responsibility. It speaks to them of their heritage, national unity and of how they are viewed in a global context. Last week, it was inspiring to see the dress and demeanour of Senior Students at the Anzac Day Service. All were respectful, all listened and all were fully engaged by the guest speakers: Commander Brown and Emily I’Ons. And as Mrs Hollander perfectly played The Last Post the silence was palpable. You would have been proud, as I was, of such mature, sensitive and thoughtful behaviour. This has been, on lots of levels a great start to the Term.

Junior School

We love our new library! Students in the Junior School have attended their first lessons in the transformed library this week and have been very excited about this learning environment.

Judi Nealy

The library is pivotal in the Transdiciplinary Head of Junior School approach to learning undertaken in the PYP. The facility, the resources and the staff have an important role to play as we learn about our enduring understandings from Prep right through to Year 6 and beyond. Library staff plan collaboratively with the Junior School class teachers and other single subject teachers (Music, PE, Japanese and Christian Studies) to ensure that a concept driven curriculum is delivered across all subject areas. The library environment was intentionally designed to stimulate inquiry (our underpinning pedagogy) to access technology (an embedded learning tool for 21st Century learners) and to promote collaboration (a key general capability for the future). In addition, it looks FAB!

Sport Student Report - Cross Country Event 2012 Known as one of the most gruelling sports to ever arrive at TIGS, the Cross Country is an anticipated event in the school calendar. For some however, maybe not so much an anticipated event as a dreaded one and yet, they participate in it and give it their best. Even before the event, things were already heating up. For preparation, a steady run every second day for a couple of weeks is advisable. While some said it was fun and healthy, others commented it was hard and tiring. The stages of the Cross Country consisted of 8/9 Year boys and girls doing 2 km as well as 10 Year boys and girls doing 2 km. But for 11 and 12 year olds, the course had been ramped up to 3 km. After this challenging event, everyone had a small break then returned to school. By Thomas Bannigan (Year 6)

Visual Arts Royal Easter Show 2012

Seven year old Alana Newhouse (Class 2R), entered her works in the Arts and Craft section at the Royal Easter Show 2012 in the painting, pottery and ceramic classes. With strong competition she had outstanding success by winning first prize in each of these classes. Alana also received a special award from the judges and was selected from all of the under 17 year old exhibitors at this years show, to receive the WH Davies Memorial Perpetual Trophy for the most meritorious Exhibit in the under 17 years section at this years Easter Show. This is a fantastic achievement for a young seven year old artist. Alana would like to give special thanks to her visual arts teacher Bessie Kallinikos who offers after school ‘Art from the Heart’ classes at The Illawarra Grammar School. Alana also entered the perishable cooking classes and won highly commended awards in the muffins and ginger bread sections. This was a great achievement as she was competing against other exhibitors under the age of 17 years.

Science National Youth Science Forum 2013

The online application process has opened for keen science students currently in Year 11 who wish to be considered for selection for the 12-day residential “science immersion” program to be offered in Canberra and Perth in January 2013. The National Youth Science Forum is a unique program that enables students on the point of entering their final year of secondary school, the opportunity to get a hands-on feel for careers and learn about study options in the diverse fields of science, engineering and technology. There are three sessions offered, each of 144 students from all parts of Australia, plus some from overseas. Two sessions run in Canberra, and one in Perth. Students live on campus as University students, gain an insider’s perspective on campus life, and experience real science, working with real scientists at a range of laboratories and workshops. Students gain the knowledge, skills and perspectives that enable them to make informed choices about Year 12 studies University course options - and provide them with a confident sense of the way forward and into a future of their choosing. In school holiday breaks during Year 12, they also have the opportunity to come back to campus in university and industry locations around the country, to build further upon their knowledge and experience and add further perspectives that assist in the successful transition to University. Further information can be obtained from Mr Sormus or Naomi Folder (Year 12) who participated in the 2012 program. For further details please visit http://www.nysf.edu.au/applying. Senior School Sport Students Success:

Rugby

Congratulations to Jesse Price (Year 9) who was selected in the NSW CCC/ CIS Northern U15 AFL team. He will now go on to represent Northern NSW Independent Schools at the NSW All School’s Championships later this month.

Football/Futsal

Congratulations to the following students on their selection in the NASSA Football Team: Katrina Christian (Year 12), Phoebe Fraser (Year 12), Elizabeth Dominis (Year 10), Lucy Donovan (Year 10), Keiran Devitt (Year 11), Luke Bussoletti (Year 11).

AFL 9-a-Side

The 2012 TIGS AFL season commenced in Week 9 of Term I with the Under 16’s and Open teams participating in the annual NSWACT/AFL Gala day at Reed Park, Dapto. The Under 16’s demonstrated a great deal of tenacity and skill against Kiama High, Shellharbour Anglican and Illawarra Sports High. It was a great pleasure to witness the outstanding team work and game sense that has developed in many of these players over the last few years. Old hands Jesse Price, Damian Manzini, Samuel Isabella, Adrian Haise and Beppe Fierravanti provided firm leadership and team work. Newer team members – Joshua Chapple, Samuel Gibbs, Brodie Miles, Nikhil Verma, Isaac Bridger and Raphael Wall – should be commended for the ways in which they were all able to quickly adapt their skills to the fast paced nature of AFL. Unfortunately the team’s bid for the finals was hampered by a mere six points on count back. The Open team, led ably by Jackson Gray, included James Needham, Thomas Robinson, Andrew Waters, Kuiam Anu, McLean Healey, Anthony Keating, Michael Ledwidge, Lachlan Shrubb, and Aaron Cannon making his AFL debut. Battling against Illawarra Sports High, Warrawong High and Lake Illawarra High, the Open team managed to keep the score lines tight. Both teams behaved admirably and were a credit to themselves, the code and the School. Thanks to Noel Burton for his assistance on the day.

Australian Secondary Schools Sailing Championships

During the Easter holidays, two students Nicholas Marzano, (Yr12) and Alexander Marzano, (Yr10) represented the school at the annual Combined High School Sailing Regatta at Belmont, on Lake Macquarie. The conditions were unpredictable ranging from windy, still to heavy rain. The students performed extraordinarily well during the event coming fourth

Late in Term I, 25 Boys in Year 7 & 8 attended the 2nd Annual 10-a-side Rugby gala day at Kiama Showground. It was a very successful day, with a number of new players to the game enjoying their first Rugby Experience. TIGS fielded two teams in two different pools with both winning all games and finishing on top of their respective pools. Congratulations to the Year 7 and8 Rugby team on a great start to the season.

overall out of 113 boats, as well as placing first in both the miscellaneous section and their respective division. This was quite a feat, with the course giving a huge advantage to the other boats throughout the competition. It was a very close race with first, second and third on equal places. Our students worked hard and both of the boys on these results snatched the victory on the last race. Nicholas has represented the school over numerous years at the All Schools Sailing competition with impressive results and we acknowledge and thank him for his commitment.

Year 9/10 Sports for 2012

Sport is compulsory for all students at TIGS from Years 7-10. In Years 9 and 10 this compulsory sport is conducted before and after school in a variety of activities. Students may formally be granted an exemption from the above requirement if they can demonstrate their participation in other regular sporting activities. All students are reminded to return their Sport forms. The Year 9/10 Sports Program includes Winter Sports in Terms II and III and a Summer Program in Terms I and IV. The Winter Sports for Years 9/10 have begun for Term 2. Badminton/Table Tennis - Monday IGC - 3.30 - 4.30pm Basketball - Wednesday - IGC 3.30 - 4.30pm Rock Climbing - Wednesday Hangdog Auburn Street Wollongong - 3.30 - 4.30pm Tennis - Wednesday - Beaton Park 3.30 - 4.30pm Athletics - Wednesday - Beaton Park 3.30 - 4.30pm All Sport buses for Year 9/10 Sports will leave from Western Avenue. Contact Mrs Sharpe at school with any questions regarding this program.

It has been a great first week of Term Ii with some wonderful football results. At the Regional Futsal Championships TIGS had 3 teams progress to the State Championships after the 14/Boys ‘A’ team were Regional Champions, and the U/14 Girls and Open Boys were Runners Up.

Bill Turner Cup Results The Under 15 boys played their first game in the Bill Turner Soccer Tournament last Friday. We travelled down to Lake Illawarra High School to verse them on their home ground. It didn’t take long before we had a commanding lead. The boys played well as a team, despite not having played together before. In total 12 goals were scored by 4 different players, with Kyle Del scoring half of them. Only 1 goal was conceded by Jonathon Kollaras. An excellent result and we look forward to a more challenging game in the next fixture.

Senior School Cross Country

In the final week of last term the school Cross Country was held at the Kembla Joggers West Dapto Course. The participation for all Houses was impressive with Aranda the eventual winners. House Results: 1st Aranda 2nd Wolgal 3rd Kogara 4th Coligan

Senior School Sport Continued... Swimming

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Hike

AICES Carnival The TIGS Swimming Team performed exceptionally well at the AICES Swimming Carnival in Homebush. There are 64 AICES member schools in 2012. TIGS won 32 medals at the carnival which placed us 2nd overall. The girls shined on the day winning the medal rally for AICES. Two of our students dominated the pool: Emma McKeon – new record in both the 18 years 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle Jarrod Poort – new record in 17 year boys 200m Freestyle

Late last term a group of Gold Duke of Edinburgh students from Year 12 ventured into the Budawangs, a range of mountains west of Milton/Uladulla. The aim was to cross from west to east. The trip was a great success and there were plenty of memories made along the way. One of the highlights was walking through the monolith valley at twilight and the glow worms putting on a show for us before we walked into camp. The views and weather were spectacular and it was a very fitting way for the Gold group to complete their last Duke of Ed Hike.

NSWCIS Carnival This Carnival was held over two days early this week. The TIGS team once again did not disappoint with their enthusiasm, sportsmanship and results.

Anzac Walk

ANZAC Day is remembered in many places and in many ways. For five of our students it will be an ANZAC day that they should not forget. Every year at Splendour Rock in the middle of the Blue Mountains a committed group of bushwalkers host a Dawn service. It is a spectacular location with a 270 degree views of the Kanangra Boyd and Blue Mountains National Park. Our camp was about a 4km walk from the rock so this meant a 4.00am wakeup and a 60 minutes trip under torchlight to the service. We arrived just as the service was getting started and although it was cold and windy we were able to remember the ANZAC’S and their efforts with other bushwalkers with a spectacular backdrop.

Congratulations to Emma McKeon, Aaron Cannon, Kelsey Cresswell and the Junior girls relay team for their selection in the NSWCIS Swimming Team to compete at the All Schools Carnival at Homebush next Monday.

Canteen News Canteen Corner Online Lunch Orders

As of Term II we are asking parents to go online to order children’s lunch orders. We would like the online ordering system to supersede the brown paper bag form of ordering and are now asking parents to order lunches online. We will of course accept the old style lunch order if you are not connected to the internet or if time does not allow you to make your order online for any reason. Please see the information below regarding the online ordering system:

FlexiSchools Online Ordering

Our School has introduced a great new online ordering system for the canteen called FlexiSchools. This system allows parents, students and staff to place orders from home, work or school at any time up until 9.00am in the morning. The payment is also done online, so you no longer need to have cash to purchase from the Canteen. As well as being convenient for you, the online orders are much faster and easier for the canteen to process - so it makes everyone’s life a little easier. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, operating in hundreds of schools across Australia. Getting online is easy and only takes a second to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website. There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, MasterCard (credit and debit), Bank Transfer and Pay Click. The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you don’t need to scrounge for coins in the morning and can easily budget for your canteen spending throughout the term. The system is now available, so we look forward to seeing your next order online!
