Headmaster As Term III begins we welcome a number of new students and their families to the School community. We hope they quickly feel at home at TIGS and make the most of the many opportunities that are available to our students.
There has been great success experienced by our students in the field of sport. We have been thrilled to observe the achievements of ex-students David McKeon (Class of 2010) and Emma McKeon (Class of 2012) in the pool at the Commonwealth Games.
Our Year 12 students are on the home stretch now with their Trial HSC Examinations just a week away. We wish them success in their final weeks of study and hope they achieve results that reflect the effort they have made.
It is also exciting to know that a new crop of talented sports men and women are taking their place. Our Junior School Footballers achieved great success in recent weeks. Margaux Chauvet and Zoe Dribbus represented Combined Independent Schools (CIS) in the State Football Carnival and the team were undefeated champions, winning the final 6-0. Zoe was Captain of the team and Margaux amazingly scored all six goals in the final. Congratulations to both girls.
Term II concluded with a special presentation by Barbara Arrowsmith-Young attended by over 800 people. She spoke of her remarkable story where she overcame significant learning difficulties related to cognitive dysfunction. Her approach to overcoming cognitive deficits, known as the Arrowsmith Program, has proved successful in helping many people to overcome their learning difficulties and succeed in a conventional pathway of learning. The School is currently processing a number of applications by students to join an Arrowsmith Program offered at TIGS. A decision on whether to run the programme at TIGS will not be made until the applications have been processed and the viability of such a programme at TIGS is determined. An Arrowsmith Program offered at TIGS would be offered in a separate unit within the School and would have no impact on the learning in mainstream classes.
This week our Junior School Boys and Girls played in the State Futsal Championships. The Boys performed with great distinction but were eliminated in the Semi-final round. Well done boys. Our Junior School Girls went even better, winning their final 8-0, an astonishing score, to become State Champions for the second year in a row. This result was no fluke. The girls have been training hard for the carnival and have spent many hours in preparation. Congratulations to Ruby Tilden, Mila Lancaster, Selene Chadrawy, Annie McLearie, Cartia Taranto, Margaux Chauvet and Zoe Dribbus and their coaches and supporting staff, Mr Robinson, Mr Yeo, Mrs Martin and Mrs Dribbus - and to the loyal parents who supported and encouraged
the whole team during training and at the carnival. Not to be outdone, we have been entertained by the performances of students in The Arts. The performance of all our Year 5 students at the special evening of music held at the end of Term II was amazing. The performances centred on the ‘Recycled Music Machine’ were very impressive as was the obvious link to the Unit of Inquiry (How the World Works) that was being studied in class. The performance of some parents on the Recycled Music Machine at the end of the night was also impressive. Year 6 performed on Wednesday evening and delighted us with examples of their learning about Musical Theatre based on the time of the 18th Century. One of the highlights of the year is the Year 12 Extension Music Concert which will be held tonight (Friday evening starting at 6.30pm). This is following a wonderful evening of performance by our Year 12 Dance students on Thursday. The talent of our students in Music is amazing and is seen at its peak as our students prepare and present their performances for the HSC. We wish them well in their performance and assessments. Chaplain’s Message AN INTEGRATED VIEW OF LIFE
of Christian Studies and the delight of Chapel allow us to focus in depth on the person and plans of God as they are seen most clearly in Jesus, but we also believe that passages like those above demand a serious consideration of the relevance of Jesus in all subject areas. As we do this we are careful to preserve the integrity and cohesion of that subject area. We are not looking for special knowledge, just deeper knowledge. One of the delights I have had over recent months is to sit in with individual faculties in the Senior School as they have planned their units of enquiry for Terms III and IV according to the unique specifications of the Middle Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate. I am there to assist staff to discern how the Bible might deepen our understanding of their units of enquiry.

“The Son (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God… In him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth… All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1.15-17) “The Son (Jesus) is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1.3) Imagine being convinced of these truths from the books of Colossians and Hebrews in the New Testament yet failing to consider how Jesus might relate to the business of teaching and learning in schools. There are some who attempt this. I think they are seriously misguided. At TIGS, we believe Jesus, the Son of God, is integral to all of life. It is for this reason that we do not just consider his relevance in the usual places. For sure, the discipline
It has been a deeply rewarding time for me. I have been reminded just how relevant the Bible is to the business of life and how when we apply the teaching of the Bible to our learning our understanding and insight into life is enhanced. I am sure our students will be the primary beneficiaries as these units are rolled out this term. As well as this, I have gained a deeper respect for our academic staff. Their dedication to new learning has always impressed me. They are committed to the highest professional conduct with respect to their vocation as educators. What has impressed me afresh, however, is their conviction about what has always mattered so much to TIGS: we cannot understand the true significance of any fact in the universe until we have considered that fact along with the fact that Jesus “is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1.3) Rev James Rogers Chaplain

WHAT PARENTS WANT TO KNOW
Meeting with Year 6 students as they prepare to come to the Senior School and talking with their parents, for whom the transition can be equally daunting, has been such a valuable opportunity for both of us, I hope, to learn and to communicate clearly, face to face. It certainly has been for me. I can clarify misconceptions such as the mistaken belief that we did not have any practical PE lessons on the timetable. We do have at least three periods of PD/Health/PE within the timetable and additional Sport opportunities before, after and during school hours.
A more detailed look at last year’s data reveals that: •
3 students went on to do Medicine, one at UNSW and 2 at Sydney.

Interestingly there were a large number who went on to do Engineering:

2 who were given Scholarships as Dean’s Scholar in Engineering

Another 4 students are studying Engineering.

In addition there were interesting Engineering specialisations pursued such as:
I can also do some homework and report back to parents after our meeting in order to answer questions that I’ve been asked with data, rather than my ‘gut reaction,’ which is usually not too far off course but often the actual facts can be surprisingly interesting, even to me. The first interesting question was about the University courses into which our students were accepted. We openly state that we are not a selective school. We were founded for families in the Illawarra who wished for their children an Academic, Christian and Caring education so that they could fully realize their potential no matter what their skills and abilities. That 90% of our Year 12 students are accepted into the faculty/course of their choice prior to them sitting their HSC is a fact about which we are very proud. We are instrumental in assisting our students realize their potential, making their choices on their career pathways. But what does the data say? In looking back over the last five years the pattern seems to be very similar in terms of the professions such as Medicine and the Law. Two or three will pursue medicine as an undergraduate course, while many more will enter the profession at post-graduate level having made that career decision later. About 10 students will study Law, a number in a double degree with subjects such as International Studies. As far as Vet Science or Dentistry are concerned it really depends on the year group, their passions and interests. Some years there are a few; others none.

So the complete range. And interestingly, some students go on to compete in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games winning many golds!

Junior School After recently reviewing a number of our Whole School Policies, I have found an issue that I need parent assistance with. On reading the ‘Safety and Security Policy’ I noted that it states “ALL visitors to the School, including contractors and canteen workers must report to either the Senior School or Junior School Administration Reception areas where they will be issued with an official visitor’s tag. They will be required to sign in on arrival and sign out when leaving.” I encourage anyone who is coming onto the Junior School site during the day to please make the Office/Junior School Reception your first port of call. If you need to drop something off for your child, for example, their lunch or a jacket, or if you need to deliver a message, our Junior School Office Staff are more than happy to assist you by delivering what you need to the classroom. This will save you from having to sign in and out. If you are planning on being on School grounds for a longer period of time, I ask that you sign in and collect a visitors tag. Please remember to sign out at the Office/Junior School Reception, as you leave. It is safer for all students and staff if we know who is on site and where they are. Thank you in advance for your support. The Junior School Athletics Carnival, held last Thursday at Beaton Park, was a great day. Thank you to Mrs Martin and Mrs Dribbus for the excellent organisation that saw all our students competing and enjoying themselves throughout the day. Thank you also to our Senior School colleagues and the Year 10 PD/Health/PE students who helped with the various events. One of the standout characteristics displayed on the day would have to have been the sportsmanship and camaraderie shown by our students towards each other and the effort and determination of all who competed.

Library News Book Week this year will be celebrated by TIGS Library and the Junior School on Thursday 28 August. We have planned lots of “reading related” activities leading up to the students dressing up as a character out of a book. Keep in mind that this is a fun activity and as such we do not expect you to go to a lot of trouble with organising a costume. Just use a costume you might have at home and keep it fairly simple. Some suggestions for costumes are: Fairy Tale, Nursery Rhyme, Sport, Cultural/National costume, Dr Seuss character, Mr Men Series, Where’s Wally, Harry Potter, Space, Book Character. TIGS P&F 2014 Karobran Disco
The annual Karobran Disco is on again this year for students in Kindergarten to Year 6. Sausage sizzle, drinks, fairy floss and treats available for purchase on the night and great entertainment. Children may be dropped off or parents are welcome to stay. Friday 19 September 5.30pm to 7.30pm in Rees Hall. Tickets are $5.00 and are avalable to be purchased through Flexischools from Monday 11 August. Volunteers are needed for this event for various roles including canteen, supervision and BBQ (great job for dads!!). The Big Day In
A picnic lunch co-ordinator is required for this years Big Day In. The Junior School P&F, Karobran, organise the picnic lunch’s to be purchased for the Big Day, In which is to be held on Thursday 18 September. If you are interested in taking on this role please contact Tanya Edgerton at tanya@ tfabrications.com.au It is a great way to contribute to the school community for someone who doesn’t have the time to commit to an ongoing role.
Senior School Sport Student Success
Volleyball: Kieran Ackhurst (Year 12) spent the recent holidays at the Australian Institute Sport (AIS). The first week was a selection camp, the second week the National Junior Volleyball Championships were held where Kieran represented in the NSW U19 Mens team. The third week Kieran was involved in another AIS camp. At Nationals, Kieran was selected as an All Star 7 player which means he was selected to the merit squad from all the state U19 Men’s teams. The ‘more’ exciting news is that he has been selected in the Australian Youth Men’s ‘Volleyroos’ team to represent Australia at the 2014 Asian Youth Championships in Sri Lanka. Kieran will travel to Thailand for a training camp on 29 August and the championships are in Sri Lanka from 5 - 14 September. Congratulations to Kieran on these outstanding results. Hockey: Congratulations to: Brittony Smallhorn and Chloe Johnston who have been selected in the NSW U15 Hockey squad. Also to Claire Smallhorn who has been selected in the NSW U13 girls Hockey team.

North Region Interschools Snowsports Championships
NSW Inter-schools Equestrian
Lauren O’Neill represented TIGS at the NSW Interschools Equestrian event last term. She rode her horse, Hayden and placed in 3 out of 4 classes, with each class having over 65 riders. Laurens results included: 3rd in the 1meter A2 class 9th in the 1.10meter A2 Class 10th in the 1meter Two Phase class. The placing’s between the first five riders in each class were separated by split seconds. Well done Lauren.

During the July school holidays, the TIGS Snowsports Team competed in the Northern Region Interschools Championships. All students represented the School with great enthusiasm. Interschool Netball Challenge
On July 23 the TIGS U14 and U16 Netball teams travelled to Shellharbour Anglican College to participate in the Inaugural Netball Challenge. We were welcomed by Mr Peter Gibson Head of Senior School who along with staff and students showed fantastic hospitality during our visit to the School. The U14’s played the first game and despite a good effort were defeated. The U16’s demonstrated great strength and team work to win their game convincingly. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Anastas and our umpire Elyse for their support at this fixture. Our teams were: U/14’s: Annalise Chadrawy, Mary Bul, Nicole Russo, Ruby Crandell, Renee Thomson, Holly Kiteley, Chloe Lavalle, Alanieta Kennedy, Benae Kuiper and Kyra King. Senior School Athletics Carnival
The TIGS Senior School Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday June 25 at Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre. It was an extremely windy and cold day, which made for tough conditions for all the competitors. Even under such blustery conditions, the attendance and participation rates from all of the TIGS students was outstanding. With a strong headwind blowing up the 100m straight, times were slower than usual, but a number of records were still broken. Congratulations to Denali Hutt, Maudie Skyring, Madeline Negus, Ashley Dribbus, Azalea Nassau and the Aranda Senior Girls Relay team, all who broke records on the day. These records added to those broken by Azalea Nassau, Maria Kyriakoudes and Elizabeth Dominis in the javelin events held at school earlier in the term. The House competition was extremely close, with the lead changing a
number of times throughout the day. Congratulations go to Aranda, for being the victorious House at the end of the day. Also, a big thankyou to all the staff who persevered through the tough conditions, allowing the carnival to run so smoothly. Over 100 athletes have now been chosen to compete at the NASSA Athletics Carnival, to be held at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Wednesday August 20. On Monday 21 July, three TIGS students, Joshua Chapple, Harrison Steele and Michaela McGrath competed at the NSW Schools Surfing Titles in Port Macquarie. They were
greeted with good conditions and a competitive field. These students enjoyed themselves at the event and put in a solid performance against the top surfers in the state however were unlucky not to progress past round one. Congratulations to Joshua, Harrison and Michaela on progressing to the state championships.

The Years 7-10 Co-curricular Sport programme for Terms III started this week. If students or parents are unsure about which sport they are doing it can be found on the student’s timetable, accessible on Edumate. If your son or daughter has been exempt an email has been sent to parents to advise them of this. If the Sport occurs off the School premises, a bus will bring students back to school in time to catch the 5.00pm north and south buses. These buses will leave from the IGC car park. If it is a morning sport, buses will bring students back to School in time for the start of the School day. Junior School Sport
CSSA Gymnastics State Championships
on to win the Grand Final 6 - 0 against Sydney North. The result being the most convincing win ever in the tournament history. Amazingly, Margaux who played striker scored all 6 goals! Both girls were selected into the NSW State PSSA team and will compete at the School Sport Australia National tournament in Bendigo at the end of Term III. Such a fantastic achievement, well done girls!
PSSA Netball Amy Lendrum, Tamara Matar, Alexia Zafiriou and Payton Leitch competed at the CSSA State Championships on 19 June. Payton also placed 1st as State Champion for National Level 5. Well done girls! All of the girls were amazing in their apparatus and achieved such fantastic results. PSSA Soccer
Year 6 students Margaux Chauvet and Zoe Dribbus competed at the NSW PSSA State football carnival at Nelson’s Bay in the last week of Term II. Both girls are members of the CIS team with Zoe as Captain, played 8 games over three days and were undefeated champions. CIS were positioned first in their pool, won the Semi final 4-0 against Sydney South West and went
Cartia Taranto competed in the CIS team at the PSSA Netball Carnival last Tuesday through to Thursday at Penrith where the carnival was celebrating 125 years of school sport. The team in which Cartia competed came equal 1st with another three teams and in all of the years there have never been three winners. This is such a phenomenal accomplishment. Outstanding results Cartia.
PSSA Cross Country
Ben Giason and Cooper Kerridge ran at the PSSA Carnival as members of the CIS team in the last week of the School holidays. Both boys ran exceptionally well with Cooper placing 6th from a field of 90 across the state and Ben placing 16th. Such outstanding results from two great athletes.

Dance
A huge congratulations to Year 5
student Isobel Kinnear who came first in her dance competition over the weekend. She was awarded the Intermediate Age Champion (9-12 years) at the Get the Beat Illawarra Dance Festival. Great work Isobel.
Futsal State Championships
25 Boys and 28 girls teams met at Penrith Sports Stadium on the 29 July after the Regional Qualifying Rounds. TIGS Boys Our boy’s team performed well and due to determination, skill and patience topped their pool. The Quarter Final was against Mamre Anglican School (MAS) and an extra time golden goal saw TIGS win 4-3. The boys faced Kings Park in the Semi Final and at 1-1 the game was anyone’s to take. Unfortunately for us it was Kings Park 4-1. TIGS Girls The girls were defending their 2013 State title and due to a team effort won their pool convincingly. Many parents, coaches and referees commented on the skilful teamwork of the TIGS girls. The girls faced Mamre Anglican School in the Semi Final and our passing game eventuated in a 3-0 victory. The Final was a one sided game against Manly West, after leading 1-0 in the first minute the girls went on to claim a second State Championship winning 8-0. The boys and girls have been a pleasure to coach and I congratulate them for their achievements. I would like to thank Mr Yeo, Mr Agnew, Mrs Martin and Mrs Dribbus for the time effort and expertise they bring to the TIGS Junior School Football programme.
