TIGS Heritage The School first opened its doors in February 1959. Actually the doors that were opened were those of St Mark’s Anglican Church, West Wollongong, where the first TIGS lessons were held. At that time the foundations of the traditions we associate with TIGS were established. One of the symbols of the TIGS heritage established at that time is the School Crest. The School Crest adorns our building, is found on our uniform and is on the TIGS letterhead - it has served as the symbol of TIGS for more than 54 years. Yet the meaning of the Crest is not well known. The School Crest has the shape of a shield and is divided into four sections by a wide blue (azure to be precise) cross on silver or white background (field). This represents our state of NSW and is based on the NSW Ensign which was popularly used in the 1800s and was seriously proposed as a flag for Australia at Federation.

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

The four white, eight pointed stars on the azure cross are the stars found on the emblem of the Sydney Diocese of the Anglican Church. The Illawarra Grammar School Ordinance 1958 established the School on 15 December 1958 and it opened on 3 February 1959 with 28 boys. The foundation stone was laid on the current site on 10 October 1959 and is currently located in the main reception area of the Senior School. In the top left hand quadrant is a golden book representing the Word of God, the Bible. True wisdom comes from understanding and obeying God’s word. Our current Mission and Values Statement states that “the School is committed to developing and implementing curriculum that reflects a Christian world view” and that “our ultimate authority is God’s Word, the Bible.” A cedar tree is found in the top right corner and is representative of three things. First, it is used symbolically in the Bible to indicate strength and uprightness. Secondly, it connects to the School Motto “De virtute in virtutem” which means “From Strength to Strength”, taken from Psalm 84:7 and which can also be found in the last verse of the School Hymn – Soldiers of Christ. Finally, cedar has historic significance for the Illawarra Region with the logging of cedar trees found in the area being an important industry in the early days of European settlement. There is a cedar tree growing outside the Senior School Office. In the centre of the azure cross is a golden ox head which is a symbol of service. An entry in the School archive records that “this is to remind us that we are educated to serve God and our fellow-men” (It was an all boys school then.) “Sometimes in the old days oxen were sacrificed. Let us keep in mind the fact that we should sacrifice ourselves, our time and our possessions for other people.” The lower quadrants were left vacant to keep the badge as simple as possible. The vision of the Founders of our School, permanently recorded on our School Badge, is both inspiring and challenging. As custodians of the TIGS tradition we are obliged to continue to grow as a school community in a way that honours their vision.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Ben Marsh to the position of Business Manager of The Illawarra Grammar School. Mr Marsh is well known in the Illawarra, both in business and in community organisations. We welcome him and look forward to the contribution he will make to our School.

Preparing for Easter The celebration of Easter is not mandated in the Bible. Instead, we are called to remember daily the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection as the wellspring of the Christian life. Relying on Jesus’ death we rejoice moment by moment in the peace we have with God; relying on Jesus’ resurrection we rejoice in a foretaste now of the new creation to come. But here, in this daily observance, is the seed of what would become Easter as we know it today. The events of Jesus’ death and resurrection are so foundational to Biblical Christianity that it seemed inevitable that the remembrance of these historical events would receive a unique place in the Christian calendar. The positioning of Easter in the midst of the School term this year presents a potential obstacle to a reverent remembrance of these great events. TIGS is a busy place for students, staff and families. The danger is that we will become so immersed in the business of the term that Good Friday and Easter Sunday will creep up on us and catch us unaware. I would hate for that to happen to us. For while we are called to meditate on the realities of Easter each day there is something to be said for a season of focused devotion. An Easter well lived can be a real blessing to our soul.

Rev James Rogers Chaplain

I want to suggest a way we might make much of Easter this year. I have come across an eight day devotional booklet designed to focus our attention on Easter. The booklet is called Love to the Uttermost and it has been produced by John Piper at ‘Desiring God Ministries’. The booklet consists of a short Bible passage and some brief comments from Piper himself. The readings commence this Sunday (Palm Sunday) and conclude on Easter Sunday. And it is free!

My hope is that you might consider reading this devotional booklet as a way of preparing well for Easter 2013. How exciting would it be if we all read the same Bible passage each day and reflected upon that passage with the same reflective stimulus? Not only would we come into Easter well prepared to wonder at God’s grace in Jesus Christ but we would do so together. You might call me a bit of a dreamer. But this is a great dream isn’t it? While it might sound like a big ask, it is not really. There is only about five minutes reading required each day. Surely we can all manage that. Won’t you take the challenge with me? I hope you will. And I hope as well we might be able to talk about what we have been learning as we see one another around the School in the lead up to Easter. You can download the booklet for free here: http://www.desiringgod.org/blog/posts/love-to-the-uttermost-free-ebook-for-holy-week Rev James Rogers Chaplain

Senior School

Pride

One of the features of a TIGS education is to give each child the “opportunity to identify and develop their gifts and talents to the fullest extent.” Last Saturday week we had Expo Day. Year 10 Student Hosts and many other volunteer students were showing prospective students and their parents around our school. It was so inspiring to see these hosts first take a deep breath and then introduce themselves to young people whom they had never met before, and their parents, before the hosts stepped out into the unknown on what was a quite a daunting task for many of them. To then hear them at various stages of their tour around the School talk with such pleasure and pride about their school, their school community and the community work that they do both within school and outside the School was an inspiration not just to me and their teachers but also to our PAs and other Administrative Staff working in Development and Support.

Monica Watt

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

The Administrative Staff were impressed by the confidence and pride that our students demonstrated and were in awe of the promotional work that these young people were doing in what appeared to be an effortless way. They commented on the fact that these skills will stand them in great stead in their future lives. I also explained to the non-teaching staff that because of our curriculum and our co-curricular program each and every student will present a speech each year and is expected to stand in front of the School and sing for their House in upcoming Music, Dance and Drama Competition. They were impressed!

We were also very proud of three Year 11 students: Emma Hatton, Clem McLernon O’Donnell and Travys Carinci who volunteered to help at the Mums and Bubs High Tea at The Lagoon on Monday 18 March. I believe they were outstanding ambassadors for the School and showed remarkable skill in dealing with all the fun and excitement of that event, entertaining the Bubs and helping serve the Mums with skill and aplomb. Well done and thank you. Involvement this year in the SRC has been so very productive and a number of students have been taking great initiatives within our school community. This week on Assembly there was a Q & A based on ICT and Netbox Blue web-filtering. You would have been very impressed by the level of engagement and discourse. Our students are our greatest assets and our greatest advertisements. We are so very proud of them. Monica Watt Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Junior School Junior School Music Program Junior School students are off to a great start in their Music time. With more of a focus on inquiry we are exploring some new ideas this year. Here’s a snapshot of what’s going on … Kindergarten has been discovering ways in which they can express themselves and tell stories through movement, singing and performance using a variety of percussion instruments. They are gaining skills in leading the group and in working together in their individual responses to recorded music. Kindergarten are being active listeners, using their imaginations and engaging in role play to show that even instrumental music can tell a story. Some of the favourite repertoire involves students pretending to be cuckoos in a clock, cats and mice! Luckily we have a lovely new Junior Music room this year with plenty of room to move! The performance of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” by Oz Opera on Monday this week was a great way to consolidate this learning, with extra elements such as costumes, props, and sets coming together to enhance the telling of this story through the Arts and Music. Exciting things are also happening in our Stage 3 Music classes. Year 5 have been investigating the ways in which different types of instruments produce a sound, and have gone on to build an instrument of their own design. We even watched an orchestra of instruments made entirely out of vegetables on YouTube to get us inspired to think outside the square! As anyone who Head of Junior School has designed and built things before well knows, things do not always go to plan the first time. Our Year 5 students however showed perseverance, modifying their designs and coming up with some very creative and original results. The next step in this program of inquiry will be to compose some music for the instruments to play, which in many cases will also mean coming up with specific symbols to notate our music. The results should be really interesting!

Our Junior Co-curricular ensembles continue to flourish, and in 2013 we are excited to introduce the new Junior Concert Band! Most of our members started learning their instruments in class last year, and are keen to continue their learning. All brass and woodwind players are most welcome to join.

Extend @ TIGS Weekly Recap Last week the children made bunny masks with pointy ears using white and pink crepe paper. The children were excited when the bands went on and they wore the masks around the classroom whilst participating in active play. Ms Branka joined our team this week and we would like to welcome her to our service. We look forward to her crafty ideas. We included ‘”Our Kitchen Rules!” into our program this week because the children were requesting it. We made Banana Splits and the children absolutely loved it! A great big thank you to Lucy Cross for coming in and showing the children the different ways and colours to use for Stencil Drawing. Senior School Sports Students Success: Athletics: Congratulations to Alexander Seal (Year 11) and Alexandra Lavalle (Year 9) for their achievements at the National Junior Athletics Championships at Perth. Alexander Seal: 3rd 800m, 8th 1500m personal best time. Alexandra Lavalle: 5th U/16 Girls 200m Hurdles, 6th U/16 Girls 90m Hurdles both personal best times.

With most of the Opens girls team not having played a game before and with only a few kicks and handballs under their belt at training during lunch times they managed one win out of their three matches. After being knocked around a little by Bulli High School, the girls picked up their game in the second match to beat Corpus Christi. They finished losing their last game against a stronger St Mary’s outfit but showed some form of cohesiveness and direction. Kristen Chadrawy (Year 11) and Keeley Gamble (Year 11) led the way for the senior girls.

Mountain Biking: Congratulations to Sarah I’Ons for her success at the recent Australian MTB Championships at Mt Stromlo in Canberra. Sarah came second in the Under 15 girls Cross Country event. She heads off to Oceania Championships in Hobart at Easter. We wish her all the best for this event.

Students will attend their first two lessons of the day and buses will leave at Recess to shuttle all students to the venue. No students are to drive to or be picked up from the venue. The carnival events will run in age divisions. At the completion of the carnival buses will bring students back to school for their normal leaving procedures.

AFL Girls 9-a-side Gala Day On Tuesday TIGS had two teams entered in the girl’s 9-a-side AFL gala day. The inexperienced yet determined Under 15 team played gallantly showing great courage at times only to unfortunately lose their three matches. The girls can take away the invaluable game experience for next time they play. Mackenzie Roberts (Year 9) and Denali Hutt (Year 9) adapted to the conditions superbly displaying great skill all day.

The Senior School Cross Country will be held on Thursday 4 April at Kembla Joggers purpose built cross country facility at Darkes Road West, Dapto.

Students are advised to wear a hat, sunscreen and bring plenty of fluid and food for the day. There will be a BBQ and drinks for sale at the carnival with all monies raised going to support the TIGS Future and Community Problem Solving Team going to the USA. If the weather looks inclement please listen to 96.5 Wave FM for cancellation details. We look forward to another exciting House competition day.
