2012 - A Wonderful Year Fantastic; Incredible; Unbelievable; Unreal; Phantasmagorical. A thesaurus provides us with many alternatives to describe what a wonderful year 2012 has been at TIGS. The year started with the appearance of chaos as the School Library closed for Term I to undergo essential repairs and transformation into a library appropriate for the 21st Century. We were so pleased with the outcome. We have a truly beautiful building which is stimulating and exciting for students and facilitates excellent teaching and learning. What is not so visible, but equally important, is the development of the Virtual Library which provides 24/7 access to students working in the classroom, playground or at home. The provision of the wireless network and the requirement that each Senior School student access the network using their own technology has changed the way students learn. Junior School students have also benefited from wireless access to the Library although they are still very excited when it is their turn to climb the hill for a Library lesson. Story telling in the transformed Library is a special event.

Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

Another highlight of the year was the School gaining accreditation as an IB World School. The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) provides programs for teaching and learning that are recognised world-wide as best practice. It is a great achievement by the School to be recognised as one of the world’s elite schools. Parents that have children studying the PYP in the Junior School will know from observing their children what a positive impact a student-centred, inquiry-based, internationally focussed approach to learning can have on a child’s learning and self-esteem. Given the success of the PYP, the decision to implement the MYP for Years 7 to 10 will have come as no surprise. The School is planning to achieve accreditation as an MYP school by 2015. As the benefits of the PYP and the MYP flow through to our HSC students, we can only look forward with great anticipation at what will happen to our already outstanding HSC results which no other school can match in the Illawarra. Looking ahead, we look forward in 2013 to the completion of the next stage of the air-conditioning of the Junior School Classrooms, the renovation of the Junior School and Senior School Reception areas and the completion of two new Science Laboratories in the Senior School. Mrs Norma Broers will retire from teaching at the end of the year. We congratulate her on such a successful career in teaching and for 30 years of service to our School. We pray that she will enjoy her retirement and look forward to her maintaining her links with the School. Thank you Mrs Broers for a job well done. Families that are preparing their budgets are advised that the School Council has approved a 5% increase in tuition fees for the 2013 academic year. This is less than the current cost of inflation in schools and absorbs the reduction in funding from the NSW Government for the next four years. At the many coming events that mark the end of the academic year I will be recognising the contribution of so many over 2012. Our community is strong because of the commitment of all members of the TIGS community to the values and traditions of the School. ‘Phantasmagorical’ may be a little over the top, but it has certainly been a wonderful year where the School has progressed and added to the great traditions and achievements of those that went before us. To all Students, Parents and family members, members of the TIGS Council and Staff - thank you for the contribution you have made to another special year at TIGS. I wish everyone a happy Christmas and a refreshing holiday break. Stephen Kinsella Headmaster

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

Chaplain’s Message

An Alternative to Losing Your Mind

Christmas is a busy time. There is no doubting that. There is the shopping to do, the parties to attend, the lunch to prepare, and on it goes… It’s common to see people at this time of year run off their feet. It’s hard to resist the pull ourselves, however hard we might try. It doesn’t seem that the first Christmas was any different, at least not for Joseph and Mary. Mary was pregnant and about to give birth. She and Joseph had to get from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea – along with all the others who were returning home to register at Bethlehem. And when they got there they had to find lodging – again, along with all the others. To add to the turmoil for Joseph and Mary there were all those unexpected guests following the baby’s birth – magi, shepherds, and doubtless many others. In the midst of all this upheaval I’m impressed by Mary’s presence of mind. It would have been easy for her to lose her mind. But that is not what she did at all. Following the visit by the shepherds and their eager promotion of Jesus’ birth, Luke in his Gospel remarks that Mary ‘treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.’ (Luke 2.19) That’s amazing given the situation she found herself in. How did she find the presence of mind even to think!

Rev James Rogers

We can easily be swept along by the tsunami that is Christmas, accepting that this is not a time for thought. But we must resist this. Mary shows us it is possible. In fact, Mary shows us what the events of Christmas demand. They demand thoughtful reflection. As we live out our own little Christmas dramas we too ought to find the time and energy to “treasure up all these things and ponder them in our hearts”. If we do that I expect we’ll find ourselves growing in wonder and awe at what God has done for us through His Son Jesus.

Chaplain

As a community one of the wonderful ways we can do that together is at our annual TIGS Christmas Celebration. This year the Christmas Celebration is on Wednesday 5 December. We will begin with a picnic on the oval at 5.30pm. You can bring your own food and rug or purchase a sausage sandwich and drink. This will be followed by the Celebration in the IGC commencing at 7.00pm. The evening will finish at around 8.00pm. Our theme for this year’s Celebration is Jesus Light of the World. We will be telling the Christmas Story with sensitivity to this theme via a range of bible readings, creative arts performances and congregational carols. We will also have opportunity to partner with ANGLICARE in offering toys and tucker for those who are doing it tough this Christmas. The Christmas Celebration is shaping up to be a wonderful evening. I hope your family might make it a priority. Rev James Rogers Chaplain

Senior School This week a new format for the House Quiz embraced technology and thus engaged students in the House Competition in a much more personalised way. It was a great success. A big thank you goes to the House Patrons and Captains who had been working on this new format for some time. Well done! Suddenly it’s nearly the end of the year and we are finalising reports and marks, getting ready for the Honours Presentations, Christmas Celebration and Presentation Day. Students are completing their Community Service Activities in their Year Groups and in Mentor time are discussing the best ways to support Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker Christmas Appeal at our Christmas Celebration. The Christmas Celebration on 5 December will be a wonderful whole school community celebration of the Christmas message and a strong statement of what we hold dear as a Christian Community. We look forward to seeing you there. We are also looking forward to celebrating with Year 10 at their Formal. This will mark the end of a stage of learning and their progression to Work Experience and then on to their Senior Years in 2013.

Monica Watt

We are also looking forward to celebrating with the Class of 2012 when their HSC results are announced. We will keep you informed.

Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

We are also planning for 2013: putting together the 2013 Calendar and working on the curriculum, particularly planning Years 7-10 Units of Work which reflect the IB philosophy. It’s exciting to be embracing the new Australian Curriculum within the global and concept-based context that is the MYP. It will be engaging and exciting for our students to be learning under this new framework. We have seen the way in which the IB PYP energised learning in the Junior School and know that will happen in the Senior School. Monica Watt Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School

Junior School What a fantastic end to the year!

It has been an absolute delight to watch our students and their teachers remain engaged and productive in their classrooms right up until the end of the year. Congratulations to you all on an outstanding 2012! The Exhibition was held this week and was a wonderful event showcasing the culmination of the PYP. Junior School students were also inspired by visiting the Honours Program display in the library. It is wonderful to see how our PYP learning will continue into the Senior School with opportunities like the Honours Program and introduction of the MYP (Middle Years Programme) I’m looking forward to seeing our school families at the upcoming events: • Wednesday 5 December – A Christmas Celebration • Saturday 8 December – Infants Pageant • Monday 10 December – Years 3-6 Presentation Evening

A letter from the Captains The year that was…

Head of Junior School

This year has been an exciting year for all. Throughout the year there have been many thrilling events such as the Swimming Carnival, the Cross Country Carnival and the Athletics Carnival. We thank everyone for their participation and House spirit. Also on the menu for this year was the Teddy Bear Picnic. Kindergarten and their buddies in Year 5 gathered and congregated on the lawn for some yummy nibbles. In our Performing Arts section was the MADD Concert and the Infants Pageant. We have such a large amount of talented students in our Junior School. Year 6 was farewelled in style by Year 5 as they reached their final year of Junior School and head off to the Senior School. Year 5 are ready to sell their wears and earn money for their chosen charities at the Year 5 Market Day and the Exhibition is sure to be a hit. The excursions are a highlight of everyone’s year, with Year 4 off at Parramatta and Year 3 at China Town. Year 1 went off to the wacky Science Centre and Year 6 chilled at Canberra. So, all in all, we thank everyone for the amazing year that was… 2012 Junior School Captains Zara Winter and Samuel Goodhew

The Parenting Adolescents Quiz Noted psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg has been invited by the School to conduct a session specifically for parents about raising adolescent children. This is a must-attend event and will be held in the form of a quiz on the evening of Monday 4 March 2013. The Quiz has been designed to provide an entertaining “adult-learning” evening where tables of parents can interact in a light-hearted competition to answer a set of questions presented by a quiz-leader, leading psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg. The Quiz questions have been carefully selected to encourage parents to reflect on some of the major issues in adolescent health. Questions are grouped into modules tackling issues such as: • the greatest challenges for parents in the new millennium • communicating with adolescents • building resilience • handling conflict • cybersafety • monitoring adolescent health issues including sleep, diet, anxiety, self-harm, drugs and alcohol Please mark this event in your diary.

TAS HSC Success Congratulations go to three of our HSC Industrial Technology – Timber Products and Furniture Industries students, who were identified by the examiners as being of a sufficiently high standard to be nominated for consideration in INTECH 2012. These students were William Harrison (chest of drawers), Jarrod Poort (hall table) and James Porteous (games table). Each of these projects were chosen for their outstanding presentation, workmanship and appeal for promoting interest and ideas in these subjects to the public. Their projects will now undergo another selection process, and if successful will be included in an exhibition at the Sydney Timber and Working with Wood Show at the Sydney Showground, Homebush, in July 2013, which attracts visitors from all over the state.

NASSA Cricket Round 2 TIGS vs Penrith Anglican College (PAC) The second round of the NASSA cricket competition saw the TIGS junior team play a strong Penrith Anglican College side last Wednesday. Captain Cameron McMillan won the toss and elected to have a bat on what was a beautiful day down at Figtree Oval. The boys made a solid start with openers Peter Kyriakoudes (24 runs) and Noah Butler (18 runs) contributing 32 runs for the opening partnership. Peter then supported top scorer Noah Gibbs (30 runs) who came in and created headaches for the opposition smashing five 4’s in his knock. The middle and lower order misfired with the team relying upon Matthew and Adam Galanti 41 run partnership to finally score a total of 142. The second innings saw TIGS simply out played by a quality PAC batting line up. Kai Middleton (1-18 off 3 overs) and Matthew Galanti (1-13 off 3 overs) were the only wicket takers. The boys grassed a couple of chances from their top order but it was the fine display of batting from Mikayla (PAC’s

On Tuesday the overcast conditions and thunderstorm warning didn’t cloud the talent and class TIGS displayed in their comfortable second round win against Inaburra Sports High School at Wiseman’s Park. Captain Jonathan Fowles won the toss and elected to bat. He and Joel Moore dealt with the openers with ease and together had an opening stand of 133, with Jonathan out on 63. Joel continued on and carried his bat for his team in style striking an impressive 121 runs with 15 boundaries. His second partner in crime Noah Butler chimed in with 29 keeping the fielders on their toes with some big hits. After 40 over’s the TIGS batting innings came to a close on 231. In a Man-of-the-match performance, Joel Moore opened the bowling and decimated the opposition’s top order with some lightning quick deliveries. After his opening spell Joel finished with figures of 3/17 off 6 over’s - A commendable effort. Cameron McMillan provided some backup bowling some tweakers. As a result he slowed the run rate and claimed 3 wickets for himself (3/24 off 7 over’s). Inaburra eventually were all out in the 32nd over securing TIGS a quarterfinal position in the Wiburd Shield.
