TERM IV 2015

Monica Watt’s Farewell Celebrating 42 years of Service

Headmaster What a fantastic morning. The Years 3 to 6 Prize Giving Assembly was just amazing with 110 certificates and awards given to students that have demonstrated they are working hard and doing their best. The certificates covered everything from Chess and Maths Olympiad to Service and Commitment to Learning Awards and provided the opportunity for the School to say well done to the many students that have worked hard but may not be recognised at the Presentation Evening on Thursday 10 December. Year 10 students are also preparing for their final week before progressing to their HSC Preliminary Year. The Year 10 Formal will be held this Friday followed next week by either work experience or an outdoor expedition, this year either Whitewater Rafting on the Snowy River or an expedition through the High Country of Victoria. We congratulate Year 10 on reaching this important milestone and encourage them to enjoy the last week of Year 10 before pushing on to the challenges of Years 11 and 12. It is the season for celebrating milestones with the Year 6 Progression Dinner being held last Thursday. Well done students and staff and especially the Year 5 parents that did such a great job in turning the IGC into a wonderland of ice and snow. The end of year celebrations continue this Saturday with the Infants Pageant being held in the IGC starting at 10am. It is my view that everyone needs to attend a TIGS Infants Pageant at least once in their life. It is truly amazing and inspiring to see our students from the Piper Centre and Kindergarten through to Year 2 on stage looking so confident and excited about school, learning, performing and having their grandparents watching in the audience. The assistance of our Year 9 Music students also adds a nice touch to the performance. It is also fascinating to observe Mrs Nealy trying to keep the attention of the audience for 10 minutes while the students get changed and prepare for the Pageant - I wonder what she will do this year? Students from Pre-Prep to Year 12 are bringing to school items of food and small gifts to donate to Anglicare’s Toys ‘n’ Tucker initiative. The collection for this worthy cause is organised by our Year 7 students as part of their service learning programme. Students are being asked to bring items to their Class or Mentor Group which will then be bundled up and placed under the Christmas tree at the Christmas Celebration on Monday 7 December. It is a wonderful tradition of our School that giving to others is central to our celebration of the birth of Jesus. It must be nearing the end of the year because the Senior School Production for 2016 has been announced. The Wizard of Oz will be performed in June 2016 and students will be able to practice their audition parts over the coming vacation. The Wizard of Oz has roles for singers, actors, musicians, back stagehands, lighting and sound crew and even a dog (auditions for the part of Toto should be interesting). Beauty and the Beast production this year was wonderful, some saying the best yet at TIGS. My view is that they are always wonderful, not the least because of the joy that students obviously have in working together to deliver a performance that demands their best. The Wizard of Oz will be just as good and I encourage all students to join the cast and crew. Finally, I am reviewing and signing end of year reports over the next week – a daunting task but one that brings a lot of pleasure as the hard work and progress of our students over the year is reviewed. Our School Motto is ‘From Strength to Strength’ and this certainly describes the progress of students in the reports I have seen so far.

Chaplain’s Message COME LET US ADORE HIM

I think it is so fitting that as the Bible comes to a close it issues forth in an invitation to us to come and enjoy the good things God has made available to us through his Son Jesus Christ. The whole Bible has charted the unfolding drama of God’s redemption of us. From creation to fall to abandonment to search to rescue to invitation: this is the story of God’s great love for us. We matter too much to Him to be left in the darkness without hope. He wants to bring us into the light of his glory and invest us with hope and joy. Hence, when all is said and done there remains the invitation: “Come! Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” (Revelation 22.17) This grand invitation is founded on the life, death, resurrection and eternal reign of Jesus. At Christmas we celebrate the first stage of this rescue mission – the miraculous birth of the Son of God. The focus of our celebrations as a School community is our annual Christmas Celebration. The Celebration this year is Monday 7 December from 7pm-8pm in the IGC (please note the day is Monday this year and not Wednesday as in previous years). As usual we begin on the Senior School oval with a picnic from 5.30pm. This is a BYO picnic. There will also be sausage sandwiches and drinks available for purchase. Some of our School bands will be playing music for us as we enjoy our picnics.

Rev James Rogers Chaplain

I want to issue an invitation not unlike God’s invitation at the end of the Bible: Come let us adore Him. This will be a wonderful occasion. We take great delight in our Christmas Celebration to restate the good news of God’s love for us in Jesus. Each year we do that in a slightly different way. This year is no exception. I won’t give any spoilers but you won’t be disappointed. What is constant each year, however, is the involvement of our wonderful students. They are working overtime to present items that will move you toward a greater adoration of God. They will also be leading us in the singing of Christmas carols; we do not want to be mere observers but also participants in the worship of God. Why not make this a whole family occasion? If you can’t make it for the picnic then I hope you will do what you can to be present at the Celebration. If you can come to both that will be wonderful. Please see the Upcoming Events page at the end of the newsletter. I look forward to seeing you on Monday 7 December and celebrating with you the wonder of God’s great love for us in Jesus. Come let us adore him! Rev James Rogers

Senior School AN EVENTFUL WEEK

Lots of significant events have been happening this week. Monday: The first House Event for 2016 occurred on Monday and it was Aranda who won the House Quiz. Well done to, clearly, the very smartest House. Year 12 continued to support CareSouth with a sausage sizzle and again showed their great entrepreneurial skills in managing the event. They are a really focussed year group where everyone seems to take their leadership responsibilities very seriously. Well done! Tuesday: Well deserved Colour Awards in Dance were presented on Assembly to Emily Nugara, Kirralee Hinch, Ashleigh Doherty, Tian Molnar, and Caitlin Chadrawy not only for their outstanding and long-standing contribution to Productions, House Dance and the Senior Dance Company but also for their support and involvement in HSC Dance Works and Performances for the Year 12 students. Well done! Photography Awards were presented to individual students and also to the School which was placed 2nd overall in the Ilford National Schools Competition. See the details later in the Newsletter. Well done again!

Monica Watt Head of Senior School Deputy Headmaster

And during Assembly there was the BIG announcement of next year’s production which will be “The Wizard of Oz”. There really was a buzz about the School on this announcement and we are encouraging everyone to get involved. There are lots of roles, not just on the stage and in the orchestra, but in other aspects of the production where students can contribute and enjoy the experience. And in amongst all the Senior School activities we are always delighted to see the Infants come ‘up the hill’ to practise for their Infants Pageant which will be on this Saturday in the IGC. It’s one of the lovely aspects of our P-Year 12 school that we can share resources and that our big, loud, Senior boys can be so soft and thoughtful and caring when the Infants are around.

TOYS ‘N’ TUCKER

On Friday Year 10 will celebrate a significant milestone at their Formal and we wish them all the very best for the end of their Middle Years. When they return in 2016 they will be wearing the senior uniform and will be involved in their preliminary HSC studies, leadership applications and in Term IV Year 12/HSC studies. How quickly this has happened!

We would like to invite the whole TIGS community to be a part of the Toys ‘n’ Tucker Christmas Appeal. Here’s what you can give as part of a festive meal or Christmas gift • • • • • • • • • •

Christmas cake Christmas pudding Tinned salmon/ham Small packs of lollies Long-life custard Toys Sporting equipment Toiletry packs Board games Gift cards

All donations are to be new and unused, thank you. Donations can be accepted through Mentor groups in the Senior School and through the student reception in the Junior School. We will be presenting our donations to a representative from ANGLICARE at our Christmas Celebration on Monday 7 December. Through Toys ‘n’ Tucker you can share the joy of Christmas with people in need. To learn more about the Toys ‘n’ Tucker campaign see http://toysntucker.org.au

Junior School Toys ‘n’ Tucker for Christmas

It is the time of year where most of us will be purchasing gifts for all of the special people in our lives as we celebrate Christmas. It’s lovely to receive a thoughtful gift, however it is timely that we remember how many children and adults are really struggling not just over Christmas but for the entire year, and for these families, gifts are simply not achievable at Christmas. We are so fortunate here at TIGS to be able to help. Our classes will be collecting money from the children to purchase gifts for Anglicare and families are warmly invited to purchase gifts that will be placed under the tree at our Christmas Celebration. This TIGS tradition offers a wonderful learning opportunity for families, you might consider offering to take your son or daughter shopping with some of their own money to purchase a small gift for a child of the same age. This teaches awareness of others, empathy and generosity – all traits that make our world a little bit kinder.

Why learning doesn’t stop for the holidays

Judi Nealy Head of Junior School

School might be finishing for summer break but learning opportunities will be abundant during the holidays. Take the opportunity to provide authentic writing opportunities with thank you cards for Christmas presents, authentic mathematics lessons by cooking up a storm for family and friends. Gross and fine motor skills can be strengthened and practiced at your local park on climbing frames and of course reading every day is still a must in the Junior School. It’s important to remember that formalised schooling and homework are only one of the ways that learning occurs and the myriad of informal authentic learning that happens outside of school is not to be undervalued. Being aware of the learning that can occur and a few well timed questions during these types of holiday activities can set up some really rich conversations that enhance learning. A few holiday tips for parents of Junior School children: • If the sun is out turn, screens off and head outdoors • A bucket of water and a paint brush on concrete or bricks makes a fun outdoor activity • Chalk on the pavement is great fun! • Dress ups and imaginative play – keep an ear out for the stories being constructed, this is a precursor to writing creatively • Cooking is a fantastic activity, play restaurants where mum and dad are ‘cooked for ‘and ‘waited on’ by the kids. (BBQ chicken and salad if you are nervous about hot surfaces) • Go fishing – patience! • Plant a garden together or even a couple of pot plants • Collect shells and other crafty things to create masterpieces • Write a play and video it – be inspired by writing the next episode of a well loved movie of TV show • Create an animation • Make and fly a kite • Need more inspiration? Student Sucess Cody Maynes Rutty

Last Friday night, Wollongong Kart Racing Club had their presentation night. Cody was awarded eight trophies, as follows and three of them are perpetual: • Cadet 9 Champion • Ron Clark Memorial Award – Most Improved Junior 2015 • Outstanding Achievement Award during 2015. • Drivers Choice Award • Junior Club Champion 2015 After Cody received his trophy for Junior Club Champion, we looked at his father Wayne’s WKRC Senior Club Champion Trophy, Wayne had won his 19 years earlier. Cody’s mum Simone says ‘It was really nice to see how Cody spoke so well on the microphone for all of his speeches, made announcements on the microphone and was selling raffle tickets and ushering the guests to their table. I had comments from other people about how well he represented himself and I actually stated that he also gets a lot of this from school and how the children handle themselves on the stage at school. It’s not only an education that the children get from TIGS’.
