HEADMASTER
Mr Stephen Kinsella Headmaster The end of term already – how did this happen so quickly? The term has certainly ended well with a number of important events being held as we sprint toward the coming vacation break. Congratulations to our families for coping so well with the changes that were made in the Piper Centre. The change in start and finish times (now open from 7.30am to 5.30pm) resulted in a service that is more ‘family friendly’ without compromising the educational programme which still runs between 9.00am and 3.00pm. As if that was not enough to cope with, the usual access to the Piper Centre was blocked by the construction of the new covered area in Drummond Drive. Despite all this, it has been a great first term in the Piper Centre - congratulations to all our Piper Centre students and their families. How good it was to have the new covered area on Drummond Drive. This welcomed facility was funded by the P&F using funds raised at The Great Fete. Having the cover for what has been one of the longest wet spells I can remember at TIGS was a blessing. The P&F are still recruiting volunteers for this year’s Fete so please help if you can. Our Indian community has once again shown the way on how to celebrate community and culture at the Taj Mahal Dinner held last Saturday. Over 450 people (Indian and others) celebrated with Indian food, dance and singing at the third of these events which are held every two years. What a great night it was. Funds raised on the night are to be donated to two great causes - TIGS Foundation Scholarship fund and the Disability Trust. Well done to all who attended and especially to the organisers, Dr Sharad Tamhane, Dr Lata Tahmane, Mrs Usha Fernandez, Dr Cedric Fernandez, Mrs Helen Bugg and Mrs Lisa Wilson. Having an awareness of the needs of others is a key outcome of a TIGS education and it is wonderful when parents demonstrate these values to their children (while having a good time as well). For many students ArtsFest is the highlight of the year. Students in the Senior School competed on Wednesday in the areas of Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and Film Making. It was a fabulous day with Kogara House declared the winner for 2017. It was good to see some of our Junior School students joining the audience, giving them a glimpse of what is ahead as they progress to the Senior School.
A selection of the best performances will be on display for parents at the ArtsFest Showcase to be held this evening (Friday 31 March). This is a must attend event and funds raised will be used to support Nganambala School (Emu Point). The end of Term I also coincides with Special Chapel Services to celebrate Easter. Family members are welcome to attend the following: Junior School Easter Chapel Thursday 6 April, 12.10pm in Rees Hall Senior School Easter Chapel Thursday 6 April, 1.45pm in the IGC I hope the coming two-week break is a time of rest and recuperation (and some study) for our students and staff. I also hope that time is spent in reflecting on the great message of Easter - God took on the form of a man so that through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we might be restored to a right relationship with Him.
Luke 24:4-8 “Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember how he told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be handed over to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?” Then they remembered Jesus’ words.” (The Message)
CHAPLAIN
Rev. James Rogers Chaplain The Difference Easter Makes
Some events have little impact on the world. Other events are so dramatic they can’t help but change the world for good. Easter is one such event. I can think of three ways the events of Easter make a difference for good. Of course, there are many more than these. First, the events of Easter mean our pasts can be forgiven. That’s good news. We have all done things, said things, or thought things we wish we hadn’t. We all have regrets. We all have guilt. The good news of the Bible is that when we put out trust in Jesus, God forgives us all our sins. In fact in Colossians 3.14 we read that God has taken everything that stands over us and condemns us and nailed it to the cross along with Jesus. Because of Easter our pasts can be forgiven. Second, the events of Easter mean our present problems can be managed. How often do we feel our lives are beyond our control? What we need in life is a power that is greater than our problems. God’s Spirit is that power. God gives his Spirit to all who trust in Jesus. In Ephesians 1.19-20 we read that God’s desire is that the same power which raised Jesus from the dead – God’s Spirit - might be unleashed in our lives to help us manage our problems. God’s Spirit won’t take away our problems but he will help us to manage them more successfully. Because of Easter our present problems can be managed.
Third, the events of Easter mean our future can be secured. Death is the great blight on life. Whether we like to admit it or not death has a stranglehold over us while we live. The promise of the Bible is that those who trust in Jesus have been transferred from death to life. In John 3.16 we read that God sent his Son into the world so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life. Because of Easter our future can be secured. As far as events go I would think Easter is the greatest. It changes the world for good; it changes my world for good! And I have only said a fraction of what could be said. Our students will be celebrating Easter with special services at School on Thursday next week. You are invited to join us. Following that, I encourage you to gather at your local church on Good Friday and Easter Sunday to continue remembering and celebrating these life-changing and life-affirming events. God bless you this Easter and have a great holiday break.
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Mrs Judi Nealy Deputy Headmaster, Head of Junior School be the bright yellow rain coat with one arm missing if your son/daughter was consistently coming home with a soggy right arm, then we know where his/her raincoat is! The holiday break is also a great time to make sure all items are labelled clearly so they are much easier to return. Both Year 5 and Year 6 have been away this week at overnight excursions, with Year 5 travelling to the Bathurst Goldfields and Year 6 off to Canberra to inquire into democracy. What a soggy term we have had in Term I. I must congratulate our students (and their parents and teachers) for coping quite well with a tricky few weeks. We have probably had the most indoor lunches for as long as we can remember, but still our School has remained a happy, caring and fun place. Lost property has been overflowing with damp items, so I recommend that parents take an opportunity to look for any missing items before it all goes into the cupboard over the Easter break. The most amusing item we had in lost property this term would have to
We have been enjoying sharing our student profile each week. Drawing of the name out of the box for the next student profile always generates much excitement at Assembly or Chapel. Our Easter Chapel service will be a fantastic way to finish off the term and parents and family members are very warmly invited to attend on Thursday 6 April at 12.10pm in Rees Hall to celebrate why Easter is such an important holiday.

ARTSFEST
SENIOR SCHOOL
Mr Greg Lanyon Head of Senior School Unlike the Oscars this year, TIGS Senior School ArtsFest was a seamless flow of entertainment and great fun. The show was ably hosted by four of our Year 12 students; Thi Trinh, James Cooper, Jackson Dekker and Jeremy Ainsworth, interspersed with comedy, chat show style video clips titled ‘Tea with Thi’. From the beginning of this term, students have been engaged in the preparation and practices associated with bringing together all the individual and group pieces for ArtsFest. It is another great example of students engaging with their learning by allowing them the freedom to use their creativity and talents to produce outcomes which are of high quality. To a large extent, the quality of the performances has been a testament to the dedication and persistence of a large number of students, from the House leaders to the performers, designers, choreographers, songwriters, scriptwriters, videographers, artists, directors and technical crew. Most of this preparation has taken place outside normal class routines.

CIS Football Cup Open Boys
On Thursday 16 March our Open Boy’s Football team travelled to St Ignatius College, Lane Cove, to compete in the CIS Cup Knockout Competition. The game was challenging on a wet and heavy pitch and there were some tired legs at the end of the game. Despite staying competitive in the first half, the opposition took full advantage of our team’s relative youth and pressed for a convincing win in the end. Despite the loss full credit goes to Nicholas Kyriakoudes, Harry Borbilas, Caleb Grace, Henry Jenkins, Samuel Lendrum, Harley Martignago, Eden McCall, Alexander Santos, Alexander Wilson, Michael Kyriakoudes, Jonathon Michalopoulos, Nick Peros, Thomas Main.
CIS Football Cup Girls
On Tuesday 28 March, the Open Girls Football Team kicked off their campaign for the 2017 CIS Football Cup. After making it all the way to the final last year, hopes were high for another exciting season. The game was played at Figtree Junior Soccer Club against Shellharbour Anglican College (SAC). TIGS was the dominant team throughout the match and opened the scoring 20 minutes in to the first half with a great long range shot from Anastasia Grozdanov. SAC leveled the scores just before half time after a fast break down their right wing. TIGS continued to dominate possession into the second half and were rewarded with a goal from Zoe Dribbus after the ball fell to her feet following a corner about 20 minutes into the second half. Margaux Chauvet put the game beyond doubt, with a great run from the back to score in front of the goal to take the score to 3-1 just before full time. Overall, it was an impressive display from TIGS girls who now go on to play Abbotsleigh in the next round of the competition. The team was Isabel Bodey, Iluka Budai, Emilia Bujaroska, Margaux Chauvet, Ashley Dribbus, Zoe Dribbus, Emma Franco, Anastasia Grozdanov, Rebekah Hutton, Carys Jenkins, Madeline McRae, Natasha Mullany, Claire Nguyen and Adelaide Thompson. Coach: Mr Deck, Assistant Coach: Mr Edgerton. Thanks also go to Hugo Hunt and Arah Mizori for being linesmen for the game.

TIGS GREAT FETE
COMMUNITY
TIGS P&F would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your contribution to last year’s fete. You may have assembled a gift basket, donated bottles, made delicious food, created something beautiful, dedicated your time and energy before, during or after the Fete or simply enjoyed the festivities. The way you chose to be involved is personal to you and you are an important part of the success of the Fete. The P&F and talented TIGS staff are in the process of planning the 2017 Fete and we would appreciate your ideas and input. What is the Purpose of the fete? •
Build community beyond the school grounds
•
Opportunity to build community within the school
•
Raise funds for school projects
•
Have fun – mostly this applies to the children
How could we improve? With the purpose in mind and a focus on colour, energy and fun, do you have any thoughts on how to enhance the TIGS fete experience? We will openly consider all creative ideas. Please submit to P&F members, your year parent representative or our electronic ‘ideas box’ - please email pandf@tigs.com.au How can I be involved? Judi mentioned in a recent newsletter the importance of the children using their strengths to learn and grow. Would you like to use your strengths and/or go outside your comfort zone to model positive behaviours? •
Are you creative?
•
Are you organised?
•
Are you playful and fun loving?
•
Are you practical?
Challenged to commit time and energy? Contribute a little or a lot. It is up to you. If you would like to volunteer at the same stall you were involved with last year, stay tuned, as we will be announcing all the stalls and coordinators in the upcoming weeks. Some parents find they have competing priorities, which means that you are juggling things on the day, however you may find yourself with some spare time to jump on a stall or take on a job. This year we will have a volunteer coordinator managing ‘walkin’ helpers. Our aim is to have dedicated volunteers and not disgruntled voluntolds. We thank you in advance for your contribution and look forward to another year of TIGS Great Fete festivities.
