From the Headmaster Expo Day, the School’s open day, where families thinking of enrolling their children are able to view the campus and speak with staff, students and parents was held in the deluge on Saturday 19 March. I wish to express my gratitude to everyone that made the day a success. I had the opportunity to talk with many of our visitors and a frequent comment was how impressed they were by the willingness of the TIGS community to participate in the day and to go out of their way to make them feel welcome. A great strength of our school is the strong commitment to the School’s values held by those that choose to be a part of TIGS community and this was noticed by our visitors. There are a number of ways that parents are involved in a formal way with the School and its community. At the last meeting of the School Council, Mr Glenn Smith (a former parent) was elected to the position of Deputy Chairman and Mrs Sharon I’Ons (current parent) was appointed as a member of the School Council. At the Annual General Meeting of TIGS Foundation, the following parents and former parents were elected to the Board: Chairman Senior - Vice Chairman Junior - Vice Chairman Secretary Treasurer

The Parents and Friends Association, and the two associated organisations, Karobran and Orana, always welcome new members to their meetings and activities. Recently the P & F organised a very successful welcome to new parents at a luncheon. They are also gearing up for the Great Fete which will be held on Saturday, 21 May and are seeking volunteers to help run the many stalls and attractions that make the day such a wonderful event. Many parents and friends of TIGS are time poor and find they are unable to commit to these organisations. As a community we understand that each person’s circumstances are different and the degree of involvement will vary. Whether you attend everything or just a few events each year, the students, staff and other parents appreciate your support. It is possible to keep track of events by checking the School calendar which is updated regularly on the Schools’ website. TIGS New Parents’ Evening Welcome 170 new parents were welcomed at the TIGS New Parents’ Evening held on Saturday 19 February. It was a wonderful opportunity for the adult members of the School community to gather and there were many new friendships established by new parents, parents of longer standing and staff. We hope that all new members of our community feel welcomed and we look forward to a long and happy association as we work in partnership to achieve the best possible outcomes for our children.
“Building Their Future” The past year has been one of the busiest in the past decade for Foundation. Maybe we came off a low base but we’ve finally “put the band back together” (for those of you that remember that classic line in the Blues Brothers). We always knew Foundation had great potential. It achieved so much in the 1980’s under the chair of Peter Kell, when considerable funds were raised to support the construction of the IGC, Junior School Buildings, The Goodhew Research Centre and the Design and Technology Centre. We have a strong constitution that defines our purpose and activities and also gives us a fair degree of autonomy from other school activities. That independence allows us to seize opportunities as they arise. We now have an exciting Business Plan which has been adopted by School Council, an experienced Administrative Officer Susan Cooper supported by Megan Donnelley and great support from the School. Above all else, we have an experienced, talented and enthusiastic Board (incl. former School Captains) whose job it is to drive Foundation for the next decade.

We knew the songs – we just needed to find some more musicians. In terms of recent achievements, we’ve developed a new website, made a number of presentations to the school community (Sports Presentation, New Parents’ Evening, and TIGS Expo), set up an annual giving pledge and are now contacting former students through the ever growing TIGS Alumni database. Last year we purchased a new trophy cabinet (which is already full), established the Rev. Richard Bosanquet Scholarship and made donations to art prizes. We are continually improving our lines of communication (both printed and electronic) and our important branding. Part of getting ‘out there’ is a new stand at the TIGS Great Fete. We want to again be seen as the constant that links successive years at school. In coming weeks, we will announce our new capital appeal for the next few years. We will also introduce a few other exciting programs in terms of sponsorship and scholarships. TIGS Foundation
Prep - Year 2 BBQ A lovely evening was enjoyed by our extended community just catching up. For our new families this was a great opportunity to get to know their TIGS family. Our Year 10 students played the role of hosts to the children organising many games and activities to keep the little ones occupied and happy. This can be seen below as Kate Pearman and Alexander Veljanov entertain some children. The BBQ dinner is cooked by many volunteers on the night and as you can see, the Head of Junior School, Mrs Judy Nealy is quick to lend a helping hand.
Year 2 Incursion Learning experiences go beyond the classroom and the Year 2 Unit of Inquiry was complimented by our Aboriginal Education incursion where students learnt traditional music and survival skills. Some students were also lucky enough to have their faces painted in traditional colors and patterns.

Junior School Swimming Carnival A Great Day! It was a great day of swimming and team competition for our Years 3 - 6 students at the Junior School Swimming Carnival. The House spirit was high and the competition strong thanks to our enthusiastic House Captains who cheered and encouraged their teams to new levels. We saw great swims through all of the heats with many students attempting events for the first time. Well done everyone. The House competition was closer than most expected with Kogara winning narrowly from Wolgal and the close relays proved to be the difference. Year 1 Helping
The Junior School were very excited to resurrect the giant chess set this term. Our youngest Junior School students enjoyed “helping� Craig, our Groundsman give the pieces a bath before they were put into action in the Chill Zone.
Our Chill Zone is a popular place in the playground. One where children enjoy playing the giant games together, building or just chilling out with a book. It gives students the opportunity to connect with friends in a relaxed and fun environment.

Junior School Captains Induction A Positive Start On Friday 17 February the 2011 Junior School captains were inducted and already look to have had a positive impact on our school and community this year. As pictured right an important part of the Junior School Captains Induction is that parents are involved. Parents are invited on stage to present and pin their child’s captain’s position on their blazer and join in on their triumph. Music, Dance & Drama The Music, Dance & Drama Festival has evolved through the years to become a highlight of the school year. 36 performances on the day were adjudicated with the best going forward to the Music, Dance & Drama Festival. The students all worked very hard and each House should be very proud of its’ efforts. We also acknowledge the hard work of the volunteers who worked in staging, ticket sales and canteen – all combining to raise over $2,800 for the school community of Emu Point, NT. Hundreds of parents and families attended making this a worthy showcase for the talent time of so many of our students. Congratulations Coligan for winning this year’s competition.
Refugee Picnic A Glorious Day Each year the Refugee Picnic gains momentum, growing in attendance and popularity. TIGS is proud to partner with Illawarra Multicultural Services and The Rotary Club of Corrimal in running this event at Stuart Park. A glorious day saw 35 of our Year 11 students, led by Mrs Locke, Ms Stanford and Mrs McMaugh assist 300 community members in the picnic. They played soccer and volleyball, helped facepaint, participated in traditional African drumming and (a new addition this year) they even Zumbed! It was suggested that the event be renamed to ‘Party in the Park’!
Beyond Bundanon Beyond Bundanon is an exciting exhibition held in conjunction with TIGS Expo Day. Students in Year 11 displayed work and performed in the IGC on Expo Day. The students were inspired by their experiences at Riversdale and Bundanon on the Shoalhaven River on the Creative and Performing Arts Camp in February. A much anticipated camp produced not only some intriguing work but brought the students closer together as they embark on their last years at school.

Senior School Swimming Carnival

Senior School Swimming Carnival February saw another great school carnival. The TIGS Senior School Swimming Carnival at Western Suburbs Pool ran smoothly with House colours galore. It was pleasing to see parents, students and staff enjoying themselves in a positive atmosphere. Congratulations to the winning house ‘Aranda’ and thank you to all Houses for an overall wonderful effort.
NASSA Swimming Carnival There were fantastic results achieved at the NASSA swimming carnival on Wednesday 2 March. TIGS won all the shields: Junior Division, Intermediate Division, Senior Division and Overall Winning School A fantastic result! Congratulations.
AICES Swimming Carnival TIGS were the Overall Champion School at AICES and achieved the following outstanding results: Champion Girls Swim Team Champion Boys Swim Team Overall Medal Tally Winners Overall Champion School NASSA were both overall AICES champion association and percentage champion association. TIGS played a major role in aiding the NASSA association to victory.
Year 8 Camp Year 8 travelled to Crosslands, a Christian Campsite which provides a natural environment for students to participate in the physical education program. It is nestled in the scenic Berowra Valley and Hawkesbury River region of Sydney. Both students and teachers reported that a good time was had by all. Students participated in a variety of activities that focused on team building and as pictured here, they also enjoyed absailing, water sports and traditional camping duties like preparing and cooking food without the help of today’s technology.
Farewell Rev John Reed has marked the end of his second significant chapter at TIGS by resigning from his position as School Chaplain to move into parish ministry in Keiraville. John was a student at TIGS in the 1980s and a proud member of Aranda House led by House teacher Mr Richard Donnelly. The magazine of 1983 reports that he was School Captain along with Nicola Scotton for ‘’9 months 2 weeks 3 days and 4 hours but who’s counting’’ and gained his first taste of article writing, reporting on the Music Competition ‘’ Well, here we go again, digging up those unpleasant memories’’ which apparently had to do with a rendition of ‘Sailing’. In 1984 the magazine reports that John ‘travelled to Great Britian, then to Kenya, where he is teaching’. Monica Watt had the pleasure of teaching English to John and holds a full set of the School Magazines in her office which contain many photos of John and other well known alumni such as Jo Graydon, Fiona Fisher and Warwick Adams looking very fetching in 1980s ‘fashion’.
Rev John Reed
Headmaster Stephen Kinsella writes ’Rev Reed has a long association with the School which dates back to his time as a student from 1980 onwards. We are sad that he is leaving us after more than six years at TIGS this time. He has carried out his role as Chaplain with grace and wisdom and we have benefited greatly from his oversight of the spiritual health and development of our school.’
Rev Reed will remain a member of our community in his role as a parent and we look forward to maintaining our friendship with him as the rector of one of our associated parishes. We pray that God will bless him, his family and his work in his new role.
