tourists or business travelers, all of which have opened recently in different parts of the world. This is a dynamic and colorful collection of some of the most forward-looking and inspiring designs in the world, from the studios of modern architecture’s leading names. Each project is thoroughly documented with the designers’ own notes and explanations, sketches, floor plans and glossy full-color photographs. They show a common inclination towards calm and concise spaces and offer an inspiring range of formal proposals, full of glamor.

The Project is organized around three main premises. First: to discover the building as a traveler would, experiencing places not at once but through continuous steps. tiate the intimate space of the sleeping rooms from the monumental space of public areas. The interior circulation has been designed with regard to the first premise, in order to show the inner void of public spaces in fragmented glances and not all at once. This leads from street level to the top floor, evolving from a soft ramp to a system of staircases and from corridors to bridges. Horizontal and vertical movement thus becomes an orchestrated choreography within the building. For the second

premise, and in order to match the building’s exterior expression with its context, materials were chosen that were already present in the town such as timber and corrugated steel. The whole site is occupied by a simple volume that contains a systematic rhythm of windows. More specifically, this volume recreates the differentiation, often seen in Puerto Natales, between the front and lateral elevations. Consequently, corrugated steel was used for the street façades while the sides are made from treated pine. The various functions of the buildings made it necessary to develop a coherent design philosophy that is both functional and modern.

Should regionalism be of any relevance in a global context, it is to be reconsidered thoroughly and without the least fear. Otherwise it might fall back on a new provincialism sooner or later.

and no abrupt angles to break the organic, flowing lines. Rising from the ground, the facade gently billows outwards before being drawn into a kind of waistline and then curving out again and over, in one continuous movement. The exterior is enveloped in a skin made up of thousands of aluminum discs, creating a fine, lustrous grain across the whole building. The effect, like sequins on a dress or the scales of a snake, gives the whole building the quality of a vast, sensuous architectural structure. The architects wanted the interior to meet the expectations created by the exterior, balancing the curiosity created by the unique façade. The fluidity of the form of the building is matched inside with an organically shaped atrium stretching across the floor plan. Like an urban canyon, the atrium creates shafts of natural light that penetrate deep inside the space, allowing a clear view of the sky and giving a real sense of changing weather conditions outside. The flood of natural light articulates the store’s dramatic inner landscape with highlights, shadows and reflections.

These openings are frameless, but they are surrounded by an edge of yellow frits, gently defining their shape. The building responds to the wish for a building that provides an architectural landmark for Birmingham by re-interpreting the form and function of a department store, enabling it to become a catalyst for urban regeneration.

Mike McKay PERFORMA_08
This work seeks to create multi-performative material systems utilizing optimization, aggregation and efficiency. Simple units and semi-finished materials were physically tested in order to extract potential performative characteristics and limits. These limits were negotiated through rigorous digital and physical techniques in order to produce strategies of fabrication. The formal systems have inherent structural capacities as well as an ability to adapt to changing conditions. Although the system is adaptable, the form must be self-structural and fabricated using material that can weather. Because of the system pliability, variation can occur within a seemingly homogenous system. The PERFORMA_08 system is comprised of identical aluminum units that are aggregated by utilizing the characteristics of the unit shape. Because of the shape characteristics, the system can achieve a pliability that allows for a dynamic and highly adaptive formal system. PERFORMA is an advanced graduate seminar taught at the University of Kentucky College of Design.
