fficial animal identification has been a hot topic over the past several months, with many states updating their ID rules for interstate movement, and World Dairy Expo requiring animals to have an officially-recognized ID tag in their ears. Holstein Association USA is pleased to expand our ear tag line-up to include visual (non-electronic) 840 official tags, providing several options to meet official ID requirements. Program Basics
USDA implemented the Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rule earlier this year, which specifies that cattle travelling across state borders must have an official tag in their ear. After March 2014, tags being sold as official ADT tags must be either 840 tags, which will be offered by Holstein USA, or USDA metal tags. At that point, tag distributors will no longer be able to sell American ID tags as official ID, those with an eight-digit number, such as what Holstein USA currently offers.
Junior
Producers have until March 2015 to use up their remaining inventory of American ID tags, including current non-840 Holstein tags. After that point, all tags being applied to animals must be the official tags bearing either 840 or the USDA metal tag number series. Animals tagged before March 2015 with an older-style number will not need to be retagged; those tags will be grandfathered in as official. We recommend that producers begin the transition to official 840 tags after using up current tag inventories, to ensure compliance well before the March 2015 deadline. While the requirement for interstate movement is just one official 840 tag, Holstein USA ID rules still require two ear tags, one in each ear, for Tag ID. The first inventory tag should be one of the official 840 tags; any supplemental tag you receive, such as a custom tag for registration, will have the matching 840 number printed on it, but not the other official USDA logos or statements. If you are currently using the 840 RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) button tag, you are already compliant and can continue tagging your animals as you have been. Note that the RFID button is different from a standard non-840 mini-round tag; RFID buttons are thicker, and all white with a black center (no other color options are available). At this time, Tag 1 (Official 840) Tag 2 (For Tag ID registration) there is no option for a non-RFID RFID 840 Button Tag Large or Maxi tag (may be a custom tag) official 840 mini-round tag. The chart, Visual 840 Junior Tag Large or Maxi tag (may be a custom tag) right, shows the combinations that Mini-round, Junior, Large or Maxi tag will ensure compliance with both state Visual 840 Large or Maxi Tag (may be a custom tag) ID regulations and Holstein Tag ID.

About the New 840 Visual Tags
While the physical attributes of the tags are the same in the size, tagger used and color options, space on the tags is limited because of information required by USDA. Large and Maxi official 840 tags are not able to have custom information printed on them; however, you can continue to order a custom tag (as a second tag to meet Tag ID requirements) through EASY ID as normal. How Do I Make the Switch?
Holstein USA customer service will be happy to help you make the switch to official 840 tags. Before calling to place an order, you must have an official Premises ID Number for your farm. If you need to obtain a Premises ID, please contact your state Department of Agriculture to register for one. Next, decide which size and color option you would like and the series of herd management numbers you need. When you call to order your next series of tags, simply inform the customer service representative that you would like to switch to official 840 tags. With questions or for more information, please contact us at 800.952.5200.

Additional Resources
The visual and electronic 840 tags available through Holstein USA will ensure your animals are compliant with the ear tag section of the ADT rule, however we recommend you contact your State Department of Agriculture to learn more about the animal health documentation required to transport animals. Additionally, the complete traceability rule and other helpful links can be found at the ADT homepage: www.aphis.usda.gov/traceability/. FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the time of year known as winter. I believe it may have started a little earlier this year up in McHenry County. The fall harvest was a little later in our area than normal, but it was a good crop, just seemed to take a while to get it completed. Most of the harvest was completed before December 1, but in traveling to Senior Convention, our group still saw a few fields of corn that still needed to be picked yet. It seemed like winter started around the middle of November with the snow and the unseasonable cooler temperatures that reminded us it was coming. I hope that everyone’s harvest went well and was bountiful! I would like to thank and congratulate the Clinton County Club on hosting such a nice event as they did with the recent state convention. The second annual Futures Sale was another success. Gary Janssen did a great job again as chairman for that sale. The banquet had a great turnout especially considering the challenging weather that happened during that
time. As I start off with my term as President, I look back at the changes that our association has gone through these past 3 years. Our association owes former President Kevin Wendling a huge “THANK YOU” for his leadership and forward thinking to help our organization move forward! The Executive committee and board also deserve credit for helping him make the progress that we have made! Without that leadership, our association would not be able to come close to being able to put on a National Convention in 2015. That being said, we still have a long way to go, and even shorter time to get there. Hopefully, with help of our board, and most importantly our MEMBERSHIP, we will be able to rise to the occasion and have a successful convention. The committee chairs and committee members planning convention are a very strong group of people. Let’s make sure to give them help when they ask for It.
FROM THE BOARD The Holstein Association USA board of directors held its fall meeting in late November in Chicago, Ill. A number of important conversations and decisions took place and we’ll take a few moments to share some of the highlights. Activity in the Upper Midwest has been quite brisk. As part of its business objectives for 2013, our National Association is holding a membership contest within three divisions. In the large division, Wisconsin has added over 150 members and is the first state in that division to pass its goal. That excellent performance was met by Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio which were all state’s that met goals of adding at least 15 new members in the medium herd category. Together these 7 states accounted for over 40 percent of the new members this year for the entire organization. Holstein Complete continues to pay dividends for both members that utilize the program and the Association. Through September, we were just shy 280,000 cows from 1,834 herds. This group only represents 12 percent of the membership, however these Holstein Complete herds account for 83 percent of the TriStar production records, 53 percent of the classified cows and 39 percent of registrations. On average, Holstein Complete herds save 14 percent on the bundle of services. In addition, an additional 5 percent is saved when running genomic tests. If your dairy hasn’t enrolled in Holstein Complete, contact your Holstein field representative to learn more about potential cost savings your herd could realize by utilizing Page 6
_______________ Starting with our upcoming committee meetings, that group of people have some very tough and difficult decisions to make. The decisions that get made at these meetings will shape how the next 2 years are going to proceed. I am very excited to be able to be apart of this whole process, but at the same time a little concerned. In less than 18 months, the 2015 National Convention will be here! We as a entire state membership need to work together so this convention can be a huge success. I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe Holiday season. This next year will be challenging for the National Convention Committees, and our association, but I believe we are blessed to have such a great group of people working towards that common goal! I hope to see you in January at the Committee Meetings.
Brian Olbrich

the bundled services the program offers to breeders. N o t only have Holstein Complete herds come to appreciate potential savings from using multiple services, so have all breeders that register cattle. In 2003, the average cost of registrations was $11.55. One decade later, costs for all registrations fell by $3.76 to $7.79 per Holstein. The savings have come about two-fold — members registering calves at an earlier age and people taking advantage of the $1 discount per head when registering animals with eartags. From a revenue standpoint, this could be the first negative cash flow year in quite some time. A number of small factors have contributed to this situation including a slight down tick in registrations, TriStar, pedigrees and ear tag sales. While classification revenues are up, the SET program (Sire Evaluation for Type) is down 12 percent. Transfers are up substantially this year. This is in part due to some substantial large herd transfers. Even so, traditional transfers are up. Additionally, Agri-Tech Analytics, one of the nation’s four records processing centers, had revenues off the projected pace. As far as the Reserve Fund is concerned, it is up over 10 percent this year and is valued over $26 million. As for future projects, the Elite Cow Project now has 651 genomic samples in study. The
Holstein genetic research team will be pouring over the data and plans to compare this group to the general Holstein population. In doing so, the team plans to potentially publish scientific papers to establish population baselines on these unique cows. After that takes place, the data will be shared with the greater dairy community. It should take a year to compete this process. On another genetics front, research on the feeding efficiency project continues to go well. In September, the first international discussion took place in Illinois. Attendees came from across the U.S. and 18 additional countries. This study could have industry-wide implications once the entire study is completed. The board also discussed several items relating to the CDCB (Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding). Efforts are being made towards finalizing the Material Licensing Agreement for HAUSA to protect our members’ best interest. Former president Chuck Worden is part of a committee set to hire two new employees to replace the interim administrators at CDCB. Lastly, the Association restructured its Dairy Herd Services Department. The newly created Holstein Genetic Services Department more correctly describes the products and services. It is our pleasure to represent you on the national Holstein board. If you have questions or concerns, we’d appreciate hearing from you.

ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN ANNUAL MEETING December 6, 2013 · O’Fallon, Ill.
The 2013 Annual Meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association was called to order at 9:10 a.m. by President Kevin Wendling with 40 members and 3 staff present. Minutes of the 2012 meeting were distributed by Secretary Tina Yagow. Boyd Schaufelberger moved to approve the minutes as printed, the motion was seconded by Dale Drendel and the motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Treasurer Carol Jones. A motion to approve was made by Joann Hartman, seconded by Herb Schmieskamp and the motion carried. Midwest Dairy Report was given by Marla Behrends, who spoke about how Checkoff dollars are being used and new exciting promotions with the “Fuel Up to Play 60” program. She spoke about the relationship with McDonalds and other national restaurant chains and how they are selling dairy products. Holstein USA Representative Tim Ewing spoke about new tags available from Holstein USA and encouraged people to contact him any time they have questions. National Director’s Report was given by Boyd Schaufelberger. Holstein USA will not host regional meetings this upcoming year, they are going to try to conserve finances by doing a webcast of the one meeting they will host in Brattleboro. They will try to send staff to more state meetings to make up for not having the regional meetings. Registrations and classifications are up slightly this year, but they project to end the year with a budget short-fall. Boyd spoke about research projects, like the Elite Cow project. National Holstein joined a partnership with Red & White to handle registrations and recordkeeping. Boyd was proud to acknowledge Bob Miller and Mil-RMor as the national-recognized “Elite Breeder”. Lucas Clanton from Illinois has been added to the qualified judges list and many other Illinois members have been on the list for years. This is Boyd’s last year on the Holstein USA board and he thanks the IHA for their support during his term. The Extension Report was given by David Fischer and Gene McCoy. Illinois Dairy Summits will be scheduled late in January, the 21st, 22nd and 23rd at three locations throughout the state. Dave told the group about new staff members at the University. He also spoke about the accomplishments of the Dairy Quiz Bowl and Judging teams and the scholarship program. Gene McCoy clarified that the Dairy Farm is still in operation at the University and much research is being done there. Gene talked about the travels and Illinois Holstein Herald
placings of his Judging team. Committee Reports Dutchess: The IHA Dutchess for this year is Morgan Bollech. Membership: Membership numbers increased over last year, we now have about 502 Senior members and 236 Junior members. National Convention 2015: Over $30,000 has been raised for the Convention already. Ron asked the Clubs to consider a donation to show support for the event from the members. Sponsor letters were handed out and Ron asked members to take those to local businesses, veterinarians and such. We are starting to put together the promotional video to be shown at the 2014 Convention in Iowa. Julie is also starting to collect names of farms from Illinois for a Virtual Tour video to be shown on buses during the convention – filming should be done during the warmer months of 2014 so don’t wait until the last minute to sign-up! Planning and Evaluation: Committee chairmen Gary Janssen suggested everyone attend the Committee Meetings in January to help plan for the future of the association. Public Relations: Editor Julie Ashton spoke on behalf of the Public Relations Committee and said the winter Herald will go out in January. Julie would like to collect a list of all Club Officers to publish. State Sales: The profit from the State Sale in the Spring of 2013 in Freeport was around $8,000. Gary Janssen spoke about the Futures Sale from yesterday, 21 lots were sold. We estimate profit will be a little less than last year. State Show: Thanks to an increase in sponsorships, the profit from the 2013 State Show was around $2,800, which will be saved for future years to off-set times when there may be less sponsors.
Youth: Committee Chairman Glen Meier talked about the accomplishments of the Juniors at National Convention 2013. Glen thanked everyone for their support and donations to the Silent and Live Auction to raise funds for the Juniors. Executive: President Kevin Wendling thanked the Executive Committee members for working so hard to tackle the financial record-keeping and is proud that we are finally at a point where we feel confident with our accounting. Resolutions were made by Ray Hess, Larry Kleiner and Gene McCoy. • Be it resolved to approve the acts and deeds of the officers and Board of Directors for the past year. • Be it resolved to thank Boyd Schaufelberger for serving on the Board of Holstein USA and representing the members of Illinois Holstein Association and other Holstein members throughout the US. • Be it resolved to thank Morgan Bollech for her service as Illinois Holstein Dutchess and Delana Erbsen for her service as Little Miss Holstein. • Be it resolved to thank all officers, employees and State Committee chairmen and sitting directors for their efforts and accomplishments this past year. • Be it resolved to thank Chairman Gary Janssen and his committee, the sale staff and sponsors, and everyone involved in the Futures Sale for their efforts in hosting the 2013 Illinois Futures Sale. • Be it resolved to thank all sponsors and donors for State and District Illinois Holstein functions. • Be it resolved to thank the coaches and advisors of the Illinois Junior Holstein Association, University of Illinois and Cooperative Extension Service for their

2013 SENIOR HOLSTEIN CONVENTION December 4-5, 2013 · O’Fallon, Ill.
The 2013 Senior Holstein Convention was held December 4-5, in O’Fallon, Ill. Hosted by the Clinton County Holstein Club, Illinois Holstein members from around the state enjoyed the hospitality of the club and fellowship with other Holstein enthusiasts. On Thursday morning, two programs were held. At the hotel, Brian Quanbury from DairyBullsOnline talked about polled genetics and how to breed for it in your herd. He discussed breeders’ ability to mate for it and the marketability of those genetics. In addition, he discussed their company’s philosophy on market sire genetics as compared to the traditional bull studs. Following Brian, Nic Anderson from the Illinois Livestock Development Group presented on new regulations from the EPA, and how to handle an EPA visit. He stressed the importance of being prepared and cooperating with them as much as possible. He also stressed key management strategies to be
good environmental stewards. Many of the ladies were treated to a morning and afternoon of cooking tips, entertainment and shopping. The ladies viewed the Christmas trees and wreath displays at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. In the Christmas tree room, decorators and designers from the St. Louis/Metro East displayed their best creations showcasing ‘Songs of the Season’. Also while at the Shrine, ladies were presented with a food art demonstration, including a watermelon carving. The ladies ate lunch at the Shrine restaurant and shopped in the gift shop. Before leaving the Shrine, the ladies viewed a laser show, telling the story of Christ’s birth with dynamic versions of Christmas music. Their next stop was at Eckert’s Orchards Country Store and Garden Center in Belleville. Today, the sixth and seventh generations oversee the daily operations of the Eckert farms. Angie Eckert welcomed the ladies and
offered samples and cooking tips of apples and locally produced cheeses, prior to shopping in the country store and garden center. That afternoon, Holstein members gathered for the second annual Illini Futures Sale. Results of the sale can be found below. Following the sale, the Annual Banquet was held. Jerry Crownover, from Missouri Extension, was the keynote speaker and shared many funny and motivational stories about growing up in the Ozarks. The Clinton County Club also paid tribute to Bert Sinclair, former U of I Extension agent, as one of the pioneering figures in registered cattle in Clinton County. Lastly, the Illinois award winners were announced for 2013. Steve Schwoerer receied the Service Award, Christie Butler the Junior Breeder Award and Joe Platz the Senior Breeder Award. Steve’s can be found below. Christie and Joe’s stories will be in the Spring 2014 edition of the Herald.
2013 SERIVCE AWARD WINNER Steve Schwoerer, Bloomington, Ill.
The 2013 Service Award winner considers himself just a humble dairy farmer, but his involvement in the Illinois Holstein Association has been evident and welcomed for years. This year’s winner is Steve Schwoerer of Roblee Holsteins, Bloomington, Ill. In 1917, Steve’s grandfather started dairying. By 1930, the herd expanded to 100 cows. After a dispersal in 1956, the herd was rebuilt from 6 cows, and the eventual management was handed over to Steve in 1970, when he was just 18. Since then, he brags that “he hasn’t missed too many milkings since that time!” Also in 1970, Steve was selected as the Illinois Distinguished Holstein Boy. Steve graduated from Illinois State University in 1974 with a double major in agriculture. He participated on the Dairy Judging team, and under the guidance of Dr. Clarence Moore, he was High Individual at the 1973 Waterloo contest. After college, Steve continued to be involved in the Holstein Association serving on the Board of Directors for six years, and President of his local club three times. He also served as treasurer of his local club for 10 years (if only to avoid being president –haha!!). Additionally, he and his wife served as co-chairman of the State Convention in 2004. While farming full-time for year, Steve also was the Animal Systems Coordinator Illinois Holstein Herald
for McLean County Extension for 10 years. During this time, he was able to adjust his Extension schedule in order to still milk cows and put up hay, while coordinating the Animal Systems program. Steve is recently semiretired, now only milking 20 cows with a BAA of 105.3. His herd’s most recent lactation average is 21,490m 910f 679p.
