Call for applications: Global District Energy Climate Awards District energy systems are essential to reducing CO2 emissions and increasing energy efficiency in our cities. The environmental, economic and social benefits of harnessing surplus heat and using local renewable energy sources make district heating and cooling the sensible choice for communities seeking to promote economic growth while minimizing the environmental consequences. The time has come to recognise communities that have embraced district heating and cooling as a vital sustainable energy solution. The first District Energy Climate awards aim at recognizing the achievements cities and communities across the globe that demonstrate local district energy leadership in providing clean, sustainable energy solutions. The award serves to: • Provide a global benchmark for environmental excellence. • Provide a platform for sharing ideas and efforts that have made systems successful. • Identify and recognize systems that illustrate the overall importance of district energy in providing sustainable energy solutions. Eligibility Systems must have been in operation for at least two (2) years. Start of operation will be determined by the date of continuous service to first customer or facility. Benefits to Winners • International recognition at an awards ceremony that will be part of a District Energy Climate Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 3rd November 2009. • A letter from the International Energy Agency informing the community’s mayor, president or city council or university or other designated individuals about the award. • A plaque symbolizing the award. • Large media attention through international press communique and conference. • Presentation of all projects submitted in a dedicated section on the summit website and in a special edition of a professional magazine with international outreach.
Submissions 1. Cover sheet stating the name of the system, location of the system, name of the owner, type of ownership, and the name, phone number and address of the person submitting the portfolio. 2. Photographs of applicable system facilities (not more than 10). 3. Written description of the system, its history, configuration of production units, distribution network, number or square footage of buildings or customer facilities served, average age of production & distribution system facilities. 4. Data and written description supporting the systems’s success in: •Lowering primary energy use and CO2 emissions in comparison to other available energy options. •Environmental compliance strategies successfully implemented (i.e. emission reduction credits, performance labelling, etc.) •Increasing energy performance of existing and new building stock •Utilising innovative technological solutions and developing strategies for the future. 5. Written description and/or documentation of customer relations, customer satisfaction, communications and marketing efforts (customer newsletters/ communications, customer service seminars, customer retention efforts, customer service improvements, etc.). 6. General documentation of the positive impact the system and its employees have on the community or area served. This would include participation in professional organisations, awards and recognition received, involvement in community activities, letters from customers etc., More than one system will be recognised with this award (4 size categories). Winners will be announced at the District Energy Summit on 3rd November 2009.
