pervasive computing Looking for cutting-edge research within pervasive computing? Looking for highly skilled and innovative staff to keep you ahead of the game? Looking for a competitive environment with strong public/private collaboration? Have a look at Denmark! Today, we live in a world where computer power not only exists on harddrives and moniters, but rapidly is on its way into products and our surroundings. Pervasive Computing can be defined as "ICT in everything; IT is wearable – accessible at any time, anywhere; persistent and always ’on’. The desire for seamlessly connecting the ’real world’ and the ‘virtual reality’ lies behind much of today’s groundbreaking technology. Being able to communicate and interact with each other and our surroundings is of top priority in the endeavor to make our lives easier, more comfortable and efficient. Computers become increasingly present yet decreasingly obtrusive in our everyday life. Still more objects and products will contain small integrated processors, chips, tags or sensors, be ‘on-line’, intelligent and able to communicate with both people and other objects. Denmark boasts strong competencies in the technologies imperative to successful Pervasive Computing – as well as a proven ability and experience in applying know-how to different spheres of application. Danish capabilities One of Denmark’s main strengths is the availability of cross-disciplinary researchers with extensive competencies in relevant technologies. This enables the integration of Pervasive Computing across a multitude of industries: • Embedded software and virtual machines, including on-the-fly update and maintenance of remote software • Development and maintenance of mission critical embedded systems with high reliability, availability and safety • Distributed software architectures, networks, and algorithms including sensor networks and protocols • Large-scale systems with scalability to mass amounts of data and users • IT security ensuring confidentiality, authenticity and availability of data • Pervasive computing interaction techniques and usability • Wireless communication technologies

Innovation within: Pervisive Computing in Denmark is based on user-driven methods and applied to many fields. Especially within the following fields where Denmark excels: Pervasive Healthcare Various telemedicine applications have been developed and tested in research labs and have also proved successful results during real life trials. The tests have not only derived cost benefits from pervasive healthcare/ telemedicine applications; the patients have experienced improved conditions being hospitalised in their own homes, close to family and friends. An example is Remote Patient Monitoring, making it possible to alert the hospital if a person's bloodpressure, breathing or heartbeat changes dramatically. The Intelligent Home The notion of the intelligent home comprises the essential aspect of Pervasive Computing – i.e. the idea of integrating IT (e.g. sensor and automotation technology) into the environment we live in, and into our private homes. In Denmark, a number of initiatives within this area have been taken and a number of Danish companies work on making our homes more intelligent and efficient by use and integration of IT. Robotics Solid expertise in motion planning contributes to Denmark’s strong position in Robotics. By uniting motion planning with existing competencies in sensor technology and system integration a unique flexibility and user driven possibilities are obtained. Furthermore, the Danish excellence draws on solid expertise in adaptive Robotics and modern artificial intelligence, which allows the development of both flexible production and intelligent products. Techsperience The new trend within Pervasive Computing “Techsperience” refers to new technology in the experience economy (broadly defined) and to the tendency that the former analogue experiences (e.g. games) melt together with technologies and media to define new, tailored and virtual experiences. Products increasingly become “intelligent” and include embedded experience designs, and citizens are increasingly offered technological experiences, location based services etc. Denmark is very active in defining this new trend – both the Danish academia and a number of companies develop and offer “Techsperience” services and solutions.
