DIAGNOSTICS IN DENMARK – HIGH-TECH, HIGH-GROWTH BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES Looking for strong engineering and medical capabilities? Looking for cutting edge R&D within diagnostics? Looking for world-class capabilities within design, innovation and functionality? Have a look at Denmark!

Denmark offers excellent possibilities of creating some of the world’s best diagnostics products. Reasons are Denmark’s strong capabilities within a broad area of engineering and medical disciplines, such as computer science, wireless communication, sensor technology, medical imaging, chemistry, nanotechnology and systems biology. Integration of different technical disciplines is another area where Denmark excels. A strong collaboration with the customers further adds to Denmark’s unique position, as does a clear focus on simplicity, functionality and design plus a unique ability to translate human sensation into technical specifications. Internationally recognised for its diagnostics products, Denmark is home to major companies like 3M, Ambu International, Aglient Technologies, B-K Medical, Boston Scientific, B&O Medicom, Dako, GE Healthcare,Medtronic, Radiometer, Roche Diagnostics, Siemens Medical Solutions, St Jude Medical Toshiba Medical Systems and Tunstall Healthcare. Also, Denmark is home to a number of small and innovative companies like AdvanDx, Atonomics, Chempaq, FluimediX, ilochip, Medical Prognosis Institute, PreciSense and Unisense.

Danish capabilities

• Great potential for stimulating new technological solutions and business opportunities • Internationally recognised quality products and services • Presence of educational institutions and engineers with competencies at the highest scientific and technical level • A strong knowledge base and a high level of cooporation between the corporate sector, educational institutions, and the university hospitals • A longstanding tradition for excellent design, innovation and functionality and strong user-producer linkages plus a unique ability to integrate technical disciplines and translating human sensation into technical specifications • Easy access to an innovative ICT cluster with resources from computer science, telecommunications and electronics which are applied within areas such as telemedicine and biosensors

DIAGNOSTICS IN DENMARK – HIGH-TECH, HIGH-GROW TH BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

First-class research and education One of the main reasons for Denmark’s stronghold within diagnostics is the presence of world-class universities and technical colleges working at the forefront of technological development. At the educational institutions in Denmark research and education is conducted with a profound interdisciplinary character and great interaction between the engineering and medical disciplines. Industry collaboration A contributing factor to Denmark’s stronghold is a strong and unique interplay between the educational institutions, university hospitals, and the industry creating synergies between research and development of new products and companies. The fact that 75% of all start-ups within the medical technology industry are spin-offs from the Danish educational institutions clearly demonstrates the strength of the research and education undertaken and the strong and unique interplay within the industry. Industry collaboration – an example Established in 1998, the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) conducts research within advanced digital ultrasound systems for anatomic and flow imaging. The Center concentrates its efforts on synthetic aperture, coded, and flow ultrasound imaging. Since the establishment several major results have been obtained, published and patented. Current partners include: DTU, B-K Medical A/S, Copenhagen University, I/O Technologies A/S, Lund University, Rigshospitalet (National Hospital), and Vermon France. Company highlights

Atonomics GE Healthcare B&O Medicom

Atonomics is targeting to become a leader in electro- and nano mechanical diagnostic point of care technologies. With their state-of-the-art technology their goal is to revolutionise the way DNA and antibody/antigen information is used in diagnosis. In 2005, GE Healthcare signed one of the biggest contacts in the history of Denmark with a group of students and their counsellors from Aalborg University granting GE Healthcare the license to use AALQTEC in their MUSE system. Leveraging on the designer heritage and strong acoustical skills of Bang & Olufsen, B&O Medicom designs and develops, amongst others, electronic stethoscopes used by physicians. In 2006, the IF Design award was bestowed on their E3000 electronic stethoscope due to its sleek appearance and ambient noise-reducing sensor technology. The IP Design award was the second award for that product in one year.
