MARRY IN GUERNSEY

CREUX HARBOUR, SARK

Some of the UK’s most beautiful, unspoilt coastline can be found on the islands of Guernsey

NEW AND UNUSUAL LOCATIONS TO TIE THE KNOT ON The Islands of Guernsey

Following a change in marriage law to allow nonresidents to exchange vows in The Islands of Guernsey and in a wider range of locations, the small archipelago is set to be a popular choice for couples looking for a destination wedding in the British Isles. With miles of picturesque cliff paths, golden sandy beaches and venues with panoramic views out to sea, the Islands offer a spectacular backdrop to tie the knot without having to travel too far away from home. From castles, forts and historic sites, to remote island beaches, brightly coloured gardens and clifftop retreats, more and more locations across the Islands are becoming available to offer the wedding of dreams - all that is required is the registered owner’s permission and agreement from a Guernsey celebrant in advance.

Castles, Manors and Farms

Castle Cornet is the eye-catching 800-year-old castle overlooking St Peter Port harbour and is available for ceremonies and receptions. The iconic site offers two options to say ‘I Do’: the Top Lawn of the castle with beautiful views of the historic town and surrounding seascapes, or The South Battery complete with a cannon as a centrepiece. Sausmarez Manor is Guernsey’s only stately home and was occupied by the local infamous de Sausmarez family. The manor contains original architecture, artifacts and art that was acquired by members of the family from adventurers to artists and soldiers. www.sausmarezmanor.co.uk

Fort Grey is situated along the west coast of Guernsey and is affectionately known as the ‘Cup and Saucer’ and provides a unique backdrop for photographs. www.visitguernsey.com/see-and-do/ things-to-do/fort-grey/ Couples who are looking for a more low-key wedding can tie

the knot at Les Caches Farm. The main farmhouse lends itself well to weddings with a simple layout and beautiful natural lighting. www.nationaltrust.gg

SAY ‘I DO’ ON AN ISLAND ESCAPE

Herm

The tiny island of Herm is known for its white sandy beaches and clear waters – making it the ultimate destination for a British beach wedding with a Caribbean-like backdrop. The 11th century St Tugal’s Chapel has capacity for up to 50 guests (with the option of extra seating under a canvas), while the island’s only hotel, The White House Hotel, provides a magical setting for a reception, with unrivalled sea views. www.herm.com

Sark

With no cars on the island of Sark, brides can have the fairytale wedding of dreams and arrive to St Peter’s Church by horse and carriage. The island’s spectacular scenery, including La Coupée (a narrow causeway linking Big Sark with Little Sark) and ‘Sark Henge’, provide wedding photos like no other, while guests enjoy views towards France. www.sark.co.uk

Alderney

Known as one of the wildest places in the British Isles, Alderney is the ideal island for a laid-back wedding, whether that’s on the beach, in one of the island’s coastal forts, or even at sea on a boat. www.visitalderney.com

With friendly locals always going the extra mile to make the day extra special, the island lends itself to a deliciously different after-party. Guests can toast the happy couple on the breakwater at Braye Harbour, while bumping along in a London Tube carriage on the Channel Islands’ only railway or in an old quarry or a bunker.

Giving notice at Registrar’s office

Both partners must give notice of their intention to marry electronically or in person at the Greffe registrar’s office at least 21 days before the marriage takes place. Before the wedding takes place, both partners must attend the Greffe, in-person, for identity checks and a review of freedom to marry documentation.
