elcome to the Summer/Autumn issue of Ladies in RACING Magazine. What an exciting Spring Carnival was experienced in Melbourne. Once again Australia’s first lady of racing and Hall of Fame Trainer, Gai Waterhouse excelled, when Fiorente won the 2013 Melbourne Cup. Fiorente won in a thrilling finish from Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos. Fiorente, second in last year's Melbourne Cup, showed greater stamina over the final 250 metres to hold out Red Cadeaux, who was also the runner-up to Dunaden in 2011. Sharon Chapman has written and photographed the Melbourne Spring Carnival brilliantly and we believe she has captured some very treasured moments with her images. Queensland's biggest horseracing Carnival, the 2014 Jeep Magic Millions will hit the Gold Coast from January 3 to 12 and once more we will see the Coast come alive with racing events. More than 100 registrations have been received for the 2014 Racing Women's Bonus, 74% are new registrants with a cumulative total of 619 women being either owners or lessees of Magic Millions Racing Women's Bonus. Michelle McMahon from Kolora Lodge was last year’s winning recipient with Real Surreal. Congratulations to Katie Page-Harvey for this wonderful incentive and we hope to bring you a story on her remarkable achievements in our next issue. While on the Gold Coast please take the time to visit the Oracle, a magnificent property and a great investment. Nominations for The Victorian Wakeful Club’s Lady of Racing Award for the 2013 season are open. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday March 13th, 2014 at the Myer Mural Hall, Myer Melbourne. Don’t miss this great afternoon that is presented to you by the hardworking ladies of the Wakeful Club Committee. Details are on page 27. We bring you some great stories on more of the wonderful ladies who work within this industry, including Jane Ormsby, Vicky Heathcote, Louise Ellis, Bonnie McIntyre, Judi Adams, Carol-Anne Brassil and jockeys Linda Meech and Rachael Murray. This issue is full of great reading including stories on The Alice Springs Cup Carnival, Thoroughbred Racing in South Australia’s “Fashion at the Races Competition”, The Betfair Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, Ladies Race Day at Echuca, The Kilmore Turf Cup, Balnarring Picnic Races and the Yarra Valley Spring Carnival, just to name a few. Five lucky subscribers will have the chance to each win a fabulous Antler Luggage package, valued at $500.00 each. Our congratulations go to the winners of the last issue Antler Luggage subscriber prizes: Amelia Moulton, Helen Shearer, Suzanne O’Brien, Dianne Swanson and Lee Kerin. A subscription to our Ladies in RACING or Ladies GOLF Magazine is the perfect gift for all occasions. We hope you all enjoy the 2014 racing year. Yours in RACING

Dear Cathryn & Ron,

Dear Cathryn and Team,

Dear Cathryn,

Thank you very much for your very generous donation to our annual Birthday Luncheon held on 24th August at Moonee Valley Racecourse.

Many thanks for my beautiful Binoculars which arrived a few days ago.

Thank you for sending me the Spring Issue of your wonderful “Ladies in RACING” magazine. It is certainly a quality magazine with a thoroughly professional presentation. I can see it becoming my bible.

We had 83 in attendance and the donation by you for the annual subscriptions for your magazines, Ladies in RACING and Ladies GOLF was gratefully received, with 12 lucky prize winners. We also very much appreciated having 2 double tickets donated for your Hats and High Tea event to be held on 22nd September at the Caulfield Racecourse. Many of our Wakeful members attended last year and it was a wonderful event and we are all very keen to attend once again. We must also congratulate you on such a fabulous magazine, Ladies in Racing. The coverage is first class and as avid readers we are very keen to receive each publication and discover what is happening globally and locally in the racing world. We have appreciated your coverage of the Victorian Wakeful Club's activities, especially our Lady of Racing Annual Award which is a very special luncheon for our Club. Again thank you so much for your generosity and all the very best for the continuation of a first class magazine. A most enjoyable read. Kind Regards Members of the Victorian Wakeful Club Inc. Dear Cathryn & Ron, On behalf of the Chairman and the committee of the Bendigo Jockey Club I would like to thank you for your generous participation in our "Taste of Spring Race Day" at the BJC last Sunday. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by many ladies and your involvement was greatly appreciated. Trish McIntyre was a wonderful judge for our "Lady of the Day" and spoke at length about your publication, spring fashion and the thrill of horse ownership. We would love to see you at Bendigo one day soon. All the best, Briga Fliedner.

I took them to the Caulfield Cup on Saturday where I enjoyed great vision of the Races and the Fashion. It is great to have a magazine dedicated to’ Ladies in Racing’ who work so hard in some many different areas. Through your magazine, I would like to congratulate all the beautiful fashion conscious ladies who have certainly raised the bar this year. Many thanks once again, Sincerely, Marlene Burhop, Pakenham, Vic. Dear Cathryn, I am just writing to say that I love your Ladies in RACING Magazine. From the moment I heard about the magazine and received my first copy, I have found it informative, interesting, and full of great stories and fashion photos. My husband and I love following the local racing circuit in North Qld and are wondering if at all possible if you could do a story/article on one of the smaller cup meets such as Innisfail, Mareeba or Atherton Cups. They all have a great following and fun atmosphere. Thanks again for a wonderful publication, keep up the good work. Regards Ada Cairns PS My husband enjoys reading the magazine too Hi Cathryn,

I had met the milliner Paris Kyne, and enjoyed reading his tribute. We need people like Paris, as they represent the more flamboyant and light side of racing. Also the more somber aspect of racing, the Tribute to Simone Montgomerie. This was informative, sensitively written and visually appealing with the lovely photo of her. At Apsley Farms I have enjoyed the Journey of Racing for the past ten years from the breeding of thoroughbreds to eventually seeing them sold or leased and racing with their new owners or trainers. With an exceptional strike rate, runners to winners, the highlight being a filly called Thrillionaire who has won 11 races. She is currently here at Apsley Farms and in foal to Moshe, Black Caviar’s full brother. Once again Thank you for the Magazine and I 'll give a hint to one of my sons, that I'd like a subscription for Christmas..... Kind Regards, Brenda Scarlett, Apsley Farms Thoroughbred Owner & Breeder. Good morning Cathryn, I have been subscribing to Ladies GOLF for several years now and I just thought it was about time I let you know how very much I enjoy your publication.

I follow all sports but Golf has been my Ladies in RACING life's passion and I thoroughly enjoy not

I would love to let you know that I love the Ladies in RACING Magazine. Every section is so informative and I have learnt so much about different aspects of the sport as well as the great ladies who are involved with this exciting industry, I can’t wait to get my copy as I think the whole magazine is brilliant and is so well done.

only reading of today’s greats but of those I followed in my earlier years. I have just started receiving Ladies in RACING Magazine and find it quite fascinating and so interesting as well!

Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for such wonderful magazines!

Damien Oliver returning to scale on Fiorente

With a year of international racing under my belt, and experience with international photographers jostling for position, combined with carrying a 400mm lens around most of the year, I felt I was far better equipped, both physically and mentally, for the rigours of the 2013 Spring Carnival.

10

SUMMER #17

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

T

he 2013 Spring Carnival had many amazing and unique moments, when the three-year-old Bay colt, Shamus Award, became the first maiden to win the ‘Sportingbet’ Cox Plate, ridden by apprentice Chad Schofield, who was the first apprentice jockey to be successful in Australia’s Weight-for-Age Championship.

Just 10 days later, we were to see Gai Waterhouse breaking her drought in the ‘Emirates’ Melbourne Cup, winning Australia’s iconic race with Fiorente, after having trained three seconds in previous years.

Nick Hall's poignant moment

The Carnival commenced with three days at Caulfield, one of my favourite tracks to shoot. Everything is in close proximity, the stalls, the hose downs, the presentations and you have a plethora of choices of where to shoot the near the finish line. I decided this year to go for more atmospheric photos encompassing the crowd, so I shot the majority of races from the inside rail. Due to my vertically challenged stature, my choice of equipment was a trusty milk crate positioned on the sand track behind the finish line. This was a good choice, with some of my favourite photographic moments being shot from this position, including the ‘Subzero Challenge’, the all greys race. After the conclusion of the Melbourne Racing Club Carnival’s highlight, the Caulfield Cup, I looked at the media scrum inside the mounting yard awaiting Nick Hall’s triumphant return on ‘Fawkner’. I decided to take a risk and stand outside and hope that I received a moment with Nick that no one else captured. This was a risk as I could have ended up with nothing, but to my delight Nick produced a touching moment that was softer

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

Ladies in RACING than the usual victorious fist pumping type celebrations. This touching moment was recently honoured by the Melbourne Racing Club, by winning the Merit Award for Photography at their Media Awards. A hunch that paid off in the end, plus it saved me from the media scrum inside!

Side Glance winning the Mackinnon Stakes

Tuesday finally arrived, could Gai Waterhouse finally break her Melbourne Cup drought and could Ollie come back after suspension and win the ‘Big One’? So many questions, so many chances and a class field of international raiders, including ‘Mount Athos’ for a return tilt; the old war horse ‘Red Cadeaux’; new addition to the Australian Thoroughbreds banner, ‘Dandino’ who had been in brilliant form; and a host of other well credentialed runners. There were at least a dozen horses who could legitimately win the race. Once again the Melbourne Racing Club put on a terrific show, with well known music groups, Birds of Tokyo and the Living End playing at the conclusion of the Caulfield Guineas and the Caulfield Cup race days. Afterwards, the party continued at the Caulfield Tabaret. Next stop was the Cox Plate meeting of nine races, which followed the Manikato Stakes meeting with a 10 race card the previous night. The weather held, the track looked terrific and history was created with maiden ‘Shamus Award’ leading all the way in a terrific ride by young apprentice Chad Schofield. It was a fairytale story for Shamus Award and his owners and trainer, who only took his place when unlucky champion mare Atlantic Jewel was scratched due to injury. The sell out crowd were treated to Aussie Icon, Mark Seymour playing Holy Grail before the big race, in what was a magical moment and a brilliant move by Moonee Valley Racing Club to secure Mark’s services. After a week to re-group and go through thousands of images from the past two weeks, it was time for Australia’s best known race, the Melbourne Cup, on day two of the Victoria Race Club’s four day meeting. Day one had four Group 1’s and every race a black type race. Jimmy Cassidy rode his 100th Group 1 winner aboard red hot favourite ‘Zoustar’ and came back to thunderous applause as a deserved and popular winner. Import, ‘Side Glance’, one of the most stunningly presented horses RACING you would ever see, won the Mackinnon Stakes in fine fashion with Jamie Spencer aboard. Chris Waller won the Myer Classic with ‘Red Tracer’ and then there was ‘Polanski’!!

Ladies in

So often we see the big names win the Victoria Derby, the big trainers, the big owners, but this time here was a horse that was purchased for $4,000.00, trained at Cranbourne by Robbie Laing, winning the Derby. It was a great day for racing and for the Laing stable, when Polanski crossed the line victorious, giving everyone hope that they too one day could have a Derby winner.

SUMMER #17

The Melbourne Cup is always a nerve-wracking day, especially for photographers. I arrived at the track at 7am, set up my remote camera, then prepared myself for the day with food and drink. I’d been approached by the ‘Coodabeen Champions’ to have an interview between Races 2 and 3. They wanted to know what it was like to take “That photo of Banna Strand” and how I would choose to shoot the main race. Naturally they asked me for my tips at the end, which I had prepared. A six horse trifecta, which included Fiorente, Mount Athos, Dandino, the ill fated Verema, Royal Empire and the old war horse and a favourite of mine, Red Cadeaux. I spoke mostly about Red Cadeaux having seeing him run second in the Dubai World Cup earlier in the year and also seeing him at the Werribee International Centre. He looked good, he looked happy and comfortable, so I couldn’t dismiss his incredible consistency. Fiorente crossed the line first, Red Cadeaux, second in an amazing effort at $61.00, with Mount Athos third. I had my classic Melbourne Cup finish photo, AND the trifecta. Never before have I won a the trifecta in the Cup, and to verbalise this on radio was even more amazing. I had the loveliest email from a lady who’d never had a bet in her life, but heard me on the radio, sent her husband to the TAB with my six horse trifecta and couldn’t believe how much she’d won. It’s stories like these and people that take the time out to say thank you, that make it all so amazing. There were wild scenes in the Mounting Yard with the army of Fiorente owners, but I somehow managed to burrow my way in for a few shots! I was certainly starting to get the hang of the media scrum! Oaks Day and Emirates Day rounded off the Carnival in what was another brilliant effort by all the racing clubs, Melbourne Racing Club, Moonee Valley Racing Club and the Victoria Race Club. Having shot carnivals all over the world, I firmly believe our racecourses, racing and race clubs in Australia are first class, and it’s always a privilege to be able to photograph here in Melbourne.

Gai Wins her first MELBOURNE CUP

Ladies in RACING

14

SUMMER #17

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

Gai Waterhouse, Australia’s first lady of racing and Hall of Fame Trainer, finally climbed her highest mountain, when she added the 2013 Melbourne Cup to her amazing number of 100+ Group 1 wins since she obtained her trainer’s licence on January 3rd, 1992. Gai was heard to say after the race, “This is a dream come true”. Story by Ron Williams • Images from Sharon Chapman

G

ai’s long battle to become a licensed trainer has been well documented and after three frustrating seconds in the world’s richest 3200m handicap in 1993, 1995 and 2012, she was ecstatic after the six-year-old entire, ‘Fiorente’, after racing so bravely in 2012 when he finished second, defeated a gallant Red Cadeaux, with Mount Athos finishing third, Simenon fourth, Dandino fifth (all imported horses), with the Australian bred Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner, in sixth place. Fiorente has raced consistently since his arrival in Australia, with some outstanding performances. His Melbourne Cup win was his first Group 1 success, following solid runs when fourth in the Turnbull Stakes and a very impressive third in the Cox Plate, which earned him favouritism for the Cup.

Racing was never far from her thoughts and she returned to Australia to work with her father, the late great T.J. (Tommy) Smith. Gai had a fifteen year apprenticeship with her father, before taking over his famous ‘Tulloch Lodge’ stable in 1994 after he became ill. Gai’s enthusiasm, energy, hard work, vision, meticulous planning and dedication are just some of her attributes that have seen her achieve results that are to be applauded by not only Australian owners and trainers, but race-goers from all over the world. She gives of her time willingly to the media and the public, sharing her thoughts and opinions to all that are prepared to listen.

Now that she has experienced the success, you can bet that Fiorente won’t be her last Melbourne Cup winner. Gai would have already started to plan her assault on the 2014 race. One of her prime candidates could be another import, ‘The Offer’, who was very impressive when he won the Ballarat Cup by over three lengths on November 24th, perfectly ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Damien Oliver. She also has another English import sired by Fiorente’s German sire, ‘Monsun’, named “Excess Knowledge” in her care. Gai could become the first trainer to win the Melbourne Cup in successive years since Lee Freedman in 2005. A number of owners who have already experienced the thrill of the win by Fiorente, are also in the ownership of The Offer, which like Fiorente, was bred in Ireland. He is a five-year-old gelding who has only had 12 starts for three wins and four placings and he has had a win over 2600m before arriving in Australia. With another twelve months of seasoning in Australia by Gai, we can expect him to be vastly improved in a similar manner to which she improved Fiorente at his second tilt at the Cup. Damien Oliver said after the win, “He has the makings of a quality horse. While a lot of others were on the way down, he was on the way up and has a fair future ahead of him”. After graduating from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Gai initially worked as a model and an actor, featuring in the Australian drama ‘The Young Doctors’, before moving to England where she appeared in the Doctor Who story, ‘The Invasion of Time’. .

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

Tom & Kate Waterhouse with their spouses, Hoda Vakili & Luke Ricketson Late in November, Gai continued her quest for her next Melbourne Cup winner when she travelled to South East Queensland for several days visiting several local thoroughbred studs, her trip being organised by Glenlogan Park Stud Manager, Steve Morley. She said, “They grow RACING great horses in Queensland, terrific boned horses, they’re tough, there’s longer sunlight hours here, great ground to breed them, great pastures”.

Ladies in

Other stud managers including Scott McAlpine praised Steve for his effort in co-ordinating the two day tour by Gai of the Beaudesert and Darling Down regions. The studs that were selected by Gai to participate are always grateful for the opportunity to promote their yearlings that will be offered at the prestigious January Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast.

SUMMER #17

15

Gai believes seeing the yearlings raw in the paddock, is one of the keys to selecting a winner, by witnessing first hand their development and growth pattern. She said, ”I can see in six to eight weeks, or sometimes three months, if there are going to go whoosh which is want you want for the Magic Millions Sale, or plateau out or go backwards and they do one of those three things. I also like to see how they’re handled, the way the breeders feed them, how they

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

treat them, what they think of them”, Gai continued. Testament to Gai’s good eye for a yearling was, that after returning to Sydney, she won 11 of the 17 trials that were held at Randwick on Monday December 2nd, with at least two of the winners set to be major players over the coming weeks. In just 22 short years Gai has achieved many milestones with plenty more to come. Some of her milestones are:

Licensed Australian Jockey Club trainer – January 3rd, 1992. First winner – Gifted Poet, March 15th 1992 at Hawkesbury. First Group 1 winner – Te Akau Nick, October 5th 1992 at Randwick (Metropolitan). First Classic winner – Nothin’ Leica Dane, 1995 at Flemington (VRC Derby). Third trainer in Sydney to prepare 100+ winners (104.5) - 1996/97. First Sydney Trainers Premiership – 1996/97. First trainer to record 10 Group 1 wins in one season – 1996/97. 100th Black Type win – May 1998 – Zabeel filly Zacheline. Only trainer to trifecta Golden Slipper – 2001. Equalled father’s record of 156 wins in a season – 2002/03. Trained 2yo ‘Dance Hero’ to win Magic Millions, Golden Slipper and Triple Crown – 2004. Trained new record of 11 Group 1 winners in 2004/05 season. Equalled record of 11 Group 1 winners in 2005/06 season. Inducted into the Australian Racing of Fame – November 26th, 2007. Won the Group 1 AJC Doncaster in four successive years – six winners in 12 years. The only trainer to quinella the Doncaster and Sydney Cup in the same season. Gai Waterhouse is a racing phenomenon; and in the words of broadcaster, Alan Jones, “She’s it. She’s racing, the allure, the glamour, the public face of racing”. Australia can look forward to many more winners from the Gai Waterhouse stable.

M

agic Millions is renowned for attracting big names in racing and the celebrity scene, but it is the unique focus on women in the horseracing industry that sets it apart from other horseracing and industry events. Co-owner of Magic Millions, Katie Page-Harvey, believes becoming a thoroughbred owner can introduce women to a new world of opportunities. That is why she, alongside her husband and business partner Gerry Harvey, created the Magic Millions Racing Women initiative. At the core of

the concept is bonus incentive of $500,000, which will be distributed between the top four all-female owned or leased horses in finishing order. “Racehorse ownership over the years has been dominated by men, but we know the sport is loved by women. The purpose of the Magic Millions Racing Women initiative is to demystify this very lucrative industry, providing an entry point for women through education and a substantial financial incentive, Ms Page-Harvey said.

Shadwell Stud’sArabian Race Day by Cathryn Meredith

Lady jockey Dani Walker who had shaved her head for Charity.

O

n Saturday December 7th, I attended a luncheon as a guest of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the UAE Minister for Finance and Owner of the world wide Shadwell Studs, to celebrate their sponsored race day at the Gold Coast Turf Club, which included two races for 17 beautifully presented Arabian Purebred horses, the Shadwell Arabian Plate and the UAE Arabian Plate. Both set weight races were for three-year-olds and up over 1400m. The start to a wonderful day's racing saw lady jockey Dani Walker put in a stellar performance on Coolinda Park's ‘Dance With Me’, trained by Anthony Mountney, to be successful in the Shadwell Arabian Plate by a length from Conderosa Millenium Siver’ with ‘River Oak Moccona’ third and ‘Warrawee Naaziq’ fourth. The second race was the perfect result for Dani and Anthony, giving them the running double, when Mulawa Studs grey mare, ‘Alchimia’ won the UAE Arabian Plate, from ‘Ausden Prince Mahal’, ‘Moondarra Maya‘ and ‘Aloha Desert Jewel’. LINDA MEECH

Linda Meech was elated when she became the first lady jockey to ride five winners at a Victorian TAB meeting at Echuca on Tuesday November 19th.

L

She had another first when she won the four legs of the Quaddie. After finishing second on Sorority Queen in the first race, Linda showcased her race riding and tactical skills when she booted adies in (7/1) RACING home five winners for five different trainers. Her winners were; Magnesia ($3.30 fav) for Anthony Cummings, Sahara Night ($6.00) for Brian Cox, Bernie of Babylon ($2.90 fav) for Peter Moody, Auramour ($5.50) for Libby Haworth (which was a late pick-up ride), and Just Reminiscing ($4.60) for Andrew Payne. The Quaddie paid $1,836.80 on the Victorian TAB. After winning the last race, Linda said, “I don’t want to go home, I’ve never ridden five winners before.” She continued, “I was very happy in the last, I was thinking at the 500m, imagine if I rode five, then I thought, I shouldn’t be thinking that, it never happens.“ Linda’s five winners at Echuca, followed on from her treble at Dunkeld on the previous Saturday.

HIGH FIVE at ECHUCA Story by Ron Williams Images from Rhonda Comitti

L

inda, who was born in Pahitaua in the North Island of New Zealand to her proud parents, Marion and Peter, was born to be a jockey. With stock horses on the farm that they lived on, she and her four older siblings, sisters’ Catherine and Sarah and brothers’ Robert and Ben, were riding before they started going to school. They also used to help around the farm on their ponies as they found it easier to ride than walk. All agreed it was a lot more fun and one day it prompted Linda to say to her Mother, “I don’t need to go to school, because I am going to become a jockey”. Linda’s Grandfather, Les, was a life member of her local Pony Club and she remembered he was quite exceptional with his handling and knowledge of horses. When he passed away she was devastated, as she wished she had asked him a lot more questions. Pony Club events were often held at their farm, which complimented her interest in becoming a jockey. Linda was obsessed with horses and ponies and although she wanted to become a jockey, she thought at the time that it may just have been a ‘pipe dream’, as her brothers and sisters were all quite tall. She remembered going on a Pony Club excursion to a racing stable when she was about 10, coming home very upset. Her Mother asked her what was wrong and Linda told her that a trainer said that she would probably grow too big to become a jockey. Brother Noel had wanted to be a jockey, but when he was 14 he had grown too tall and heavy so Rhonda’s Mum and Dad made her finish Year 12 at Wendouree Secondary College as they thought in time she too could also grow to be too big to follow her dream. She used to record her weight and height from when she was at Forest Street Primary School and recalled that she didn’t really grow much after she turned 12. She enjoyed watching the races on television, especially on Wide World of Sport. When her Mum and Dad took the children to the local Woodville races, they were each allowed to pick a horse in every race. Linda would always choose a grey or the horse with the biggest ‘bum’. She wasn’t into form; she just thought that the rear end of a horse gave it the most power. Linda loved seeing one of the pioneer lady jockeys in New Zealand, Linda Ballantyne, when she rode. Her favourite horse when she was young was Bonecrusher, who featured regularly on the sports news. She wasn’t sure why she was so interested in racing, as the rest of the family didn’t share her interest, although her brother, Ben, was to work for Peter Moody in 2010. Linda completed her education at Wanganui Girls College.

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

She was a boarder (which she hated) until year 10 and during that year she did a work experience course one day each week at the Wanganui Race Course. Her Mum and Dad were happy for her to board privately in year 11, but she had to pay her own way. She earned money by riding work, which helped keep her weight down now that she no longer had to compete in the toast and pizza competitions when she was still a boarder. When she was 18, Linda entered into an Apprenticeship with her first Master, Janice Webster. She didn’t appreciate Apprentice School and didn’t attend very often, as she always wanted to be riding in a race. She also worked part time for well known New Zealand trainer Kevin Myers, a good friend of Janice’s. She appreciates now that Apprentice’s Schools have changed a lot today and are far better controlled. Linda had a few race rides before she rode her first winner ‘Desert Flower’ at Rotorua, trained by Kevin Myers. She knew she wasn’t a star apprentice and although working hard, she found obtaining rides wasn’t all that easy. Kevin decided to take some horses to Australia, offering Linda the opportunity to travel with them for six weeks on a working holiday. The horses were stabled at Paddy Payne’s in Ballarat and her life changed for the better. Linda said, “Paddy was great, he helped me with my whip technique and encouraged me to have a few rides. I had my first ride in Australia at Avoca, where I finished third, which was very exciting.” Linda continued, ”I then rode a few winners for Kevin and he suggested that I stay in Australia, as he said there was more money available there and if it didn’t work out, I could always return to New Zealand.” She was very happy when she rode her first winner, but thought at the time a goal of a 100 winners would be huge. That figure was to become a distant memory as the years rolled by, as she rode her 1000th winner just a couple of months ago. RACING

Ladies in

When Linda made the decision to stay in Australia, South Australian trainer, Sue Jaensch, who was based in Naracoorte, offered Linda an apprenticeship, which she gladly accepted. (Paddy and she tried to find trainers with more horses who were in Victoria, but nobody would take her, trainers weren’t very keen to take girls back then). Linda later transferred to Terry O’Sullivan at Stawell, before completing her apprenticeship with Peter Moody in Queensland and Melbourne. She rode approximately 300 winners as an apprentice.

SUMMER #17

33

Linda’s jockey role models during her career number many, including in no particular order; Christine Puls, Hugh Bowman, Michael Rodd and Robert Thompson. She also enjoyed a good relationship with most trainers, as indicated by her success at Echuca, with Peter Moody, who calls on her services regularly in Victoria and Interstate, Terry O’Sullivan, Michael O’Leary and her long time friend, Kevin Myers amongst her biggest supporters. Linda was never to realize when she started riding that her talent would take her from New Zealand to Australia, where she has competed in all States and Canberra. She hasn’t been to the Northern Territory as yet, but it is a thought in the future She has also ridden overseas in Singapore, South Korea and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where she rode in the final of the 2012 Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Muburak Ladies World Championship. Linda feels that the majority of the male jockeys now accept the female jockeys the same as they do all jockeys, as long as they show that they are competent. She knows that in a highly dangerous sport, all jockeys must have total confidence in the ability of all the riders involved in a race, to create a safe environment. She does however think that some apprentices, male or female, can be given their license to race too early, RACING before they have ridden in enough jump outs and/or trials.

Ladies in

Linda and her partner, Julian, live on an eight acre property in Freshwater Creek, which is just a short distance from Geelong. Julian has good access to his two children, daughter Charli eight and son Freddie seven and when together, they all enjoy an idyllic life with their menagerie of seven chickens, two dogs, two cats, two guinea pigs and a pony named ‘Maple’ for Charli, who is very keen to learn to ride. The latest pet to arrive is ‘Bobby’, the wonder pony, which Linda bought and is in the process of breaking in. She also enjoys her nice vegetable and flower gardens. She loves playing tennis when she has the time, even though she is still a learner. Julian and Linda go fishing when the opportunity presents, while Linda has plenty of hobbies such as her pony Bobby, cooking, gardening, art and running. Julian also has a very busy life, managing Network Directional Drilling and, as a Helicopter Pilot, ferrying Linda to race meetings when the time and opportunity allows. Linda is very happy and contented with her life, which surely plays a great part of her continuing success. She has slowed down in the last 12 months, she doesn’t ride as much work or go to as many race meetings. (She took two months off last season). She just wants to consistently produce good rides. With her drive and talent, there are many more wins in store for Linda Meech.

Story by Ron Williams Images from Yulia Soultanov & Sharon Chapman

At the

Balnarring is a small town on the Mornington Peninsula, which is in the south-eastern area of Victoria and the township fronts Westernport Bay. It is a short 69km (43 miles) from Melbourne, easily accessed by two modern highways, the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and the new Eastlink Freeway.

O

n Saturday December 7th, I made my first trip to the Balnarring Picnic races after receiving an invitation from one of our intrepid reporters, Victoria Shaw, Australia’s only female race-caller, who has a strong association with the Club and who calls at all of their meetings. The Balnarring Picnic Racing Club inc. was established in 1863 and celebrated 150 years of picnic racing on February 26th, 2013. Their theme is “Picnic Racing for Family Enjoyment “. This is supported by their admission charge of $10.00 per adult 18+, plus free admission RACING for all children for five of their six Annual meetings. On Australia Day the adult charge is $15.00. The smart thing to do is to become a member at a cost of $55.00 per season. Membership entitles you to a member’s ticket, plus a guest ticket, with additional guest tickets available for $20.00. Simple arithmetic says that if you only go to three of the six meetings per season with a guest, you are already $5.00 ahead financially, plus you have the convenience of the member’s car park and the special member’s area and clubroom.

BALNARRING Picnics

Fly The Coop ridden by Jason Cunningham When I arrived at the Club’s Emu Plains racecourse on Coolart Road, I was amazed that there was a long row of cars waiting to enter the course from both directions, considering that the first of six races to be run that day was still nearly two hours away, for a 1pm start. My amazement continued as I travelled along the course driveway, as I became aware that an exceptionally large number of people, marquees, tents and other portable constructions were already well established. I thought to myself, many metropolitan race clubs would be more than happy to see this number of people attending one of their regular race meetings. After speaking to a number of people, it seems that the local businesses and residents of the Mornington Peninsula, plus racegoers from other areas support these meetings to the hilt. The race track is well grassed and races are run over 1050, 1200, 1600 and 2000 metres. Fields of up to 10 can be accommodated in the starting stalls, as is the case at Victorian Picnic race meetings. Many trainers had their first starters at Balnarring, including now well known up and coming trainers Jason Warren and Shea Eden, who have enjoyed many metropolitan successes. Jason took his star sprinter, ‘Bel Sprinter’ to Singapore recently, where she ran a gallant second in the Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1200m, to the Hong Kong star, ‘Lucky Nine’. Horse trainer Kane Harris

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

enjoyed the track at Balnarring as a "happy hunting ground", winning many races as a Picnic rider prior to taking up his full time training license. Lee Freedman often trialled his imported galloper, Lucas Cranach at the track because of its above average racing surface, which has three water bores. It also attracts quite a number of trainers from the surrounding areas. The racing was very competitive, with an automatic totalisator and 11 bookmakers for the punters to place their bets on the local, intrastate and interstate races. There was a ‘Punters Club’ on the local races available for $20.00 for those people who didn’t want to back their own judgement, relying instead on the ‘experts’ to deliver them a dividend. The Club’s Committee also RACING had two raffles consisting of 200 tickets at a cost of $5.00 each, rewarding two lucky purchaser’s with a return of $500.00 for their investment.

There were 22 jockeys sharing the day’s rides, including seven lady jockeys. They were: Courtney Pace, Jo Stevens, Stephanie Dorning, Angela Bence, Peta Tait, Debbie Waymouth and Shiralee Maher. Stephanie and Shiralee rode the winners of the last two races, which were very popular as both of their mounts started favourite, which allowed a lot of punters to balance their budget. Stephanie, Debbie and Courtney also were placed in other races.

A wonderful initiative of the Balnarring Picnic Racing Club in conjunction with the nearby City of Casey is the broadcasting ofRACING all races and form talk, with trackside interviews on community radio Channel 97.7 FM, 3SER Casey Radio. The community channel creates opportunities for youth of the region and volunteers to get involved with sports commentary and form analysis, as well as broadcasting live to an interactive audience that communicate on Facebook, with listeners as far reaching as the USA! You can tune your car radio live to 97.7 FM on course for the rundown of the day’s races, or if you can't make it to the track, the broadcast generally reaches as far as a large number of the suburbs of Melbourne.

Many female jockeys graduate from pony clubs and Balnarring Pony Club caters for children aged from four to 25. The pony club thinks of themselves as a “youth group on horseback” and meet on the first Saturday of every month. The racecourse is just a short drive from the historic township of Balnarring and there is plenty of affordable accommodation available for visitors who wish to make a holiday visit of days or even weeks, as there are a variety of attractions to suit all tastes. Balnarring Beach is the current holder of the award for the “Cleanest Beach in Victoria” from the Keep Australia Beautiful Committee. Merricks Creek joins Western Port at Balnarring, forming a narrow peninsula of land which is traversed by walking paths and footbridges around a shallow creek. One of the most scenic parts of Balnarring Beach is around Cliff Road, which is situated on a bushy headland. A walking track winds its way down the cliff face to the sandy beach below, offering spectacular views along the coast. A large selection of wineries are located in the rural inland section of Balnarring and the neighbouring community of Merricks. One of the larger wineries is the Marinda Park Vineyard, which features over six hectares of vines, a cellar door for wine tasting and purchases, as well a provincial café offering French favourites with regional inspiration. Balnarring’s shopping village is located two kilometres inland and boasts a supermarket and a good range of specialty shops. May we suggest that a visit to the Balnarring races in this picnic racing season and the surrounding areas will make your journey well worth the effort?

Yarra Valley The Victorian Spring Carnival covers many venues around the state and aims to provide different racing experiences for people from all walks of life. Whether you are a seasoned race goer or not, a number of provincial race meetings are offering exposure to a great days racing and entertainment that serve their patrons and communities very well. One such racing club that is engaging extremely well with Melbourne’s outer east is the Yarra Valley Racing Centre.

O

nly a couple of years ago the club suffered terribly due to severe weather conditions that forced the cancellation of several of their feature meetings. Compounded with track issues, resulting in the temporary closure of galloping facilities. Today with a brand new racing surface, wonderfully well thought out amenities for the general public to enjoy both inside and outside, racing at Yarra Glen has never been more enjoyable. This year patrons enjoyed three brilliant days of racing festivities with family and friends over the Spring Carnival. The connection between the race club, its community and sponsors’ was clearly evident with the great awareness

of racing in the region with a large gathering at Eastland Shopping Centre. Caulfield Guineas Day and Eastland went into racing mode in conjunction with the Yarra Valley Racing Centre, hosting a “Fashions on the Field” competition inside the Shopping Centre. A fantastically diverse, but entirely appropriate location, received warmly by both fashionistas ready to try their luck, and shoppers alike. The winner of the “Fashions on the Field” competition at Eastland then had the opportunity to join other competitors in the fashions finals trackside on either Cox Plate Day or Melbourne Cup Day at the Yarra Valley. If racing fashion wasn’t necessarily your thing it didn’t matter as passes to the Yarra Valley’s racing dates over the

Carnival were handed out to shoppers who embraced the prospect greatly. Whilst talking to many fashion contestants at Eastland, one point was very clear that the Yarra Valley Racing Centre recognise, many people feel they don’t have the access or resources to participate in big city style competitions and often feel overwhelmed by them. Yet when I looked around at the overall standard and calibre of attire as worn by contestants, they sure would have given their city counterparts a run for their money! Gorgeous displays of colour and patterns amongst the Valley’s fashionable certainly set a very high standard that complimented three days of colourful and exciting racing action at one of the state’s most scenic racing locations.

Harness racing action.

It was also heart-warming to talk to many of the younger ladies that had turned to skills most of us had thought lost, making their own garments and millinery. With most winners of large fashion contests at race clubs today resorting to a tailor or self-made items, in search of a better fit and greater quality. Although online shopping has many conveniences, its effect on manufacturing standards, is highly evident with some poorly constructed clothing decimating the Australian fashion industry. Many contestants also expressed how they like to be able to still shop in person, as opposed to buying online, knowing that garments that are made properly are obvious when you have the ability to try an item on before its purchase. With the forthcoming addition of David Jones to Eastland, fashion conscious shoppers will have even more choice. Cox Plate day in the Yarra Valley and fashion was clearly not all that was on a lady’s agenda, as the inform Linda Meech racked up a double for the Moody stable. The chance to get alongside the mounting yard and view the horses was an opportunity that many amongst the crowd relished as at larger race tracks this can be a problem on big days. Melbourne Cup Day and the crowd arrived very early in preparation of not just a national day of celebration, but also some wonderful Harness action with greatly skilled reinsmen and women. Coupled with the action on the big screen at the track.

Oaks Day, as well as the member’s area open to everyone, not that the standard for the public is any less at Yarra Glen. New improved facilities certainly provide comfortable, enjoyable and contemporary surrounds for all to experience. The ability to take pleasure in a sit down lunch with the race track and surrounding mountain ranges as a backdrop is truly enjoyable. Live music, some of the best Yarra Valley wines on offer, with more fashionable festivities all capped off with further racing action and a growing crowd that is extremely well behaved. Oaks Day in the Yarra Valley is an absolute pleasure.

Lord Kanaloa - Winner of Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint

W

ell I should start by thanking ‘Red Cadeaux’ for his second in the Melbourne Cup, which provided me with the trifecta, thus funding my trip to Hong Kong. Upon arriving in Hong Kong and at my first morning of track work, it was truly amazing the calibre of horses that compete for the International Series. Just from the Melbourne Cup, the entries included the second and third placegetters in ‘Red Cadeaux’ and ‘Mount Athos’, plus stars like ‘Dunaden’, ‘Simenon’ and ‘Dandino’. Throw in ‘Side Glance’, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s superstar ‘The Fugue’, Multiple Group 1 winner, ‘Moonlight Cloud’, who’d been in brilliant form, the sprinters, ‘Lucky Nine’, last year’s Hong Kong Sprint winner, ‘Lord Kanaloa’ and you have some amazing horseflesh, all in the one place at one time. Nothing can prepare you for your first view of Sha Tin Racecourse. It is truly spectacular, not only as a racing venue, but as a training facility for the countless number of horses that are trained there. Everything is so well organised to ensure smooth running and safety for all concerned, RACING especially members of the media. Lord Kanaloa, last year’s Sprint Winner from Japan, did a warm up lap on the track and then quickened, running his last 200 metres in a staggering 10.3 seconds. It was clear he would be the one to beat in the sprint. A bevy of international runners came out on the track, including one of my favourites, Red Cadeaux who once again looked in terrific order, Aussie hope ‘Linton’ also looked fantastic and would fly the Aussie flag. I had a great morning, followed by an amazing breakfast.

Wednesday evening and a visit to Happy Valley Racecourse, which included a beautiful dinner from the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for all the visiting media. The International Jockeys Challenge was a highlight, with Kerrin McEvoy initially a 50-1 shot. Kerrin flew the flag proudly for Australia by winning the Title; he rode the winner of the first leg, finished second in another leg, as well as collecting points in the other two races of the Challenge. A terrific effort by Kerrin, as he was competing against the world’s best jockeys in the challenge series of four races, all jockeys receiving exclusive invitations from the HKJC. The famous HKJC Gala dinner was held on Friday night at the Convention Centre, was a spectacular evening, combined with the Cartier World Horse Racing Awards, where the highest ranked horses in the world are honoured. Our very own Black Caviar tied for the highest award with French filly Treve, with a highest ranking for the year of 130. A great evening was had by many of the connections of Black Caviar who flew over especially for the event. Fittingly, our first course included Lobster and Black Caviar!

The following morning at track work, news had spread that unfortunately Dandino and Galilelo Rock were both scratched due to injuries, which was devastating for connections and my heart went out particularly to my good friends, Darren and Liz Dance of Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock and all the other owners who made the trip. Race Day finally arrived. The first of the International races was The Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Vase over 2,400 metres with many great horses competing. ‘Dominant’, who won the race, is trained in Hong Kong by Australian John Moore (son of the legendary George) and was perfectly ridden by Hong Kong based Australasian jockey, Zac Purton. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s amazing mare, The Fugue flew home for second with the ever consistent Dunaden and Red Cadeaux finishing third and fourth respectively. Race Five was the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint, with red hot favourite Lord Kanaloa not disappointing when he bolted in by five lengths to take the race out for the second consecutive year. He will now be retired to stud. Sydney’s Tommy Berry, who was riding in Hong Kong for just a short period, won two races, giving a great display and it was good to see him doing so well in Hong Kong.

A spectacular fireworks display concluded what was an incredible day of racing. After the races it was off to “The Fun Place”, the three word establishment, ‘Lan Kwai Fong’, that I couldn’t quite pronounce, so I gave up in the end, just saying to my fellow media, “Let’s go to the Fun Place”! It’s in a street lined with bars, but no one really stays in the bar, electing instead to drink in the streets. It’s a who’s who of the racing media from all over the world. Trainers, jockeys and other identities all let their hair down on the last evening, of what was a fabulous week.

The Hong in Kong Jockey Club certainly know adies RACING L how to put on an event, the planning, the

aving just returned from the Melbourne Spring Carnival with my "Ambassador Family”, I reflect back on happy memories..... It started on Derby Eve with an informal cocktail party as the Ambassador guests come together from all parts of Australia for the running of the 2013 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Renewing old acquaintances and making new friends, everyone mingles so no need to worry if you come alone, you'll be well looked after. Wayne Wilson MC welcomes guests and interviews some of the owners of the runners in the carnival. Also Wilf Mula, ATC Committee member, updates us on the ‘Rise’ of Royal Randwick. A fun night is had by all. Derby Day - we head off in style, ladies dressed in the traditional black and white, with the men looking very dapper for a spectacular day of racing. Arriving at the track we are shown to the best viewing seats at Flemington in the hill stand opposite the winning post. Ambassador pride themselves on always doing the best for their guests. THOROUGHBRED RACING S.A.

FASHIONS at the RACES Search continues for SA’s most fashionable racegoer

Fashion has been taking centre stage at race meetings across South Australia during the past few months as part of Thoroughbred Racing SA’s popular Fashion at The Races competition – and there is still plenty of time to enter.

In addition to the Fashion at The Races State Final, this year’s SA Schweppes Oaks Day will feature plenty of action both on and off the track with the $400,000 Schweppes Oaks, the $400,000 Sportingbet Classic, and fashion parades by King William Road, Hyde Park, featuring race wear and millinery from TAFE graduates.

Competition for the 2013/14 title has been strong, with fashionistas travelling from around the state and across the border to take part in the year-long, state-wide style search featuring SA racing’s richest fashion prize pool.

There will be a range of great hospitality options on offer on the day including the Endeavour Homes Fashion Pavilion Upper Level which has a fantastic location on the derby lawns and features a spacious balcony overlooking the racecourse.

As part of the competition, fifteen of the state’s most stylish racegoers will be selected over 26 race meetings throughout the year, culminating on the Fashion at The Races State Final on South Australia’s Schweppes Oaks Day 2014 at Morphettville Racecourse. The finalists will be in the running to win this season’s major prize – a luxury fashion holiday to Paris, France for two people. The prize includes business class airfares, a new set of luggage, return transfers, 5 nights’ accommodation in a 5 star hotel, 2 full days of fashion tours and tickets to a fashion show. The runner-up will win a $5,000 shopping spree on King William Road, Hyde Park.

Ladies in

Thoroughbred Racing SA Marketing Manager Jane Wellington said the standard of entrants had been outstanding so RACING far and the judges had high expectations for the Final. “We’ve seen some fantastic outfits and hats at the events held during the last few months – the finalists which have already been selected have showcased very classical, stylish attire with exceptional detailing,” said Jane. “There are still eight spots to be filled – including an opportunity to make the Final during the heat held on Schweppes Oaks Day 2014 – so we’re looking forward to seeing what racegoers have to offer in the coming months.”

Fighting the Good Fight Against BREAST CANCER J

udi Adams who resides in Hobart, Tasmania is a remarkable lady. She was born in South Australia and after living in several capital cities on the mainland, her Mother relocated the family to Hobart in 1975. Judi completed her secondary education at Geilston Bay High School, after which she was accepted for a position with the Department of Main Roads. She later enrolled at the University of Tasmania as a mature age student, obtaining her Honours Degree in 1996. After initially studying full time, she completed her degree part time, while still working in the banking and hospitality sectors. Judi’s working career has been varied and diverse. She has worked full time in both private enterprise and most recently with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission for over 12 years. She is now working on a project at the University of Tasmania. Ladies in RACING Magazine were approached earlier this year by Judi, who is now the Chair for the Volunteer Committee of the Hobart NBCF, to help in some way in their fund raising for their 2013 Think Pink Cup Day, which is run annually at Tattersall’s Park, Hobart. RW: When did you first become involved with the National Breast Cancer Foundation? JA: I first became involved with the NBCF in 2003 when I began fund raising for the pink ribbon campaign. The NBCF are the peak body in Australia who fund research and my goal was to be involved in finding answers, as only through research can we learn more, achieve earlier prognosis tools, more effective treatments, and better outcomes for the 1 in 8 females and 1% of males diagnosed each year. Research costs money and takes time, so my alignment with the NBCF saw me choosing to do something practical to assist their aspirational goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. RACING Since I began fund raising, NBCF has come a long way, raising over $ 95 million and funding over 360 research projects. We now know so much more about breast cancer as a result. I am proud to have been able to assist this in my own small way. I am proud of the events I have produced, and the fact that our Hobart committee has raised over $300,000 net profit for the charity since 2003. With Tasmania having such a smaller economy than the mainland States, this result is one I sincerely thank the people of Tasmania for. Their assistance has been huge in our achievements, which could not have occurred without regular support and donations, as well as patronage of our events.

RW: As the Chair of the Volunteer Committee for the NBCF in Hobart, what are your duties? JA: My role is varied, it starts usually with a brainwave at 3 am that morphs into a brain storming session and leads to the creation of events as diverse as we have offered. For example, two distinct race day luncheon events at Tattersall’s Park each year, the Pink Ribbons Luncheon on Betfair Guineas Day and the annual Think Pink Cup, through to a raft of community based events such as the Shannons Take Your Tops Off for Breast Cancer Research - a static display of topless convertibles, tribute events, an art show at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, gala dinners, fashion parades, breakfasts, sausage sizzles, blues and roots festivals, theatre events, and pink illuminations, even morning teas, coffee mornings and breakfasts as well. My role also involves seeking sponsorship requests across all of our events, as well as all aspects of event management from design through to implementation, assisting on the day with hosting, managing volunteers, organising and post event reporting. I also find that I have other aspects and duties that have nothing to do with fund raising, such as being involved in awareness raising events, and promoting campaigns such as Register 4 and Pink Ribbon, Mother's Day Classic and community networking events. Keeping the public aware and informed on the work of the NBCF is a key aspect in a small community like Tasmania.

When a wonderful vibrant lady from her close circle of friends, who had seen her mother lose her battle to breast cancer, also succumbed, followed some months later by her sister, Judi decided to find out how she could assist in some way with the fight to minimise this insidious disease. After finding out that there was no government funding available specifically for breast cancer research, she became involved with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Interview by Ron Williams • Images from Peter Staples Often I meet people who share their stories and this is so heartening to know what a difference 10 years has made to the outcome for so many of our fellow Tasmanians. RW: When and where did you become interested in horse racing? JA: My talented friend Rhonda Hall is a trainer in Tasmania and we became firm friends. I joined the Tasmanian Racing Club so I could go along and enjoy the races and be involved in the local club and also share in her triumphs and be there to see her horses run. It was out of our friendship and collaboration as partners that the first Think Pink Cup event arose, leading to a lasting and firm favourite race day event in Hobart. RW: Do you attend race meetings regularly? If so, which race courses do you attend? JA: I attend the local Tasmanian racing whenever I can, I also visit mainland racecourses, particularly Melbourne and Sydney where I have close friends involved in the racing scene. I have met many wonderful people through their alignments with our Hobart race day events. Sometimes if I am lucky and time things right, I get to see them outside of Tasmania at their respective race clubs.

Shannons takes tops off for breast cancer

RW: Do you have the time to enjoy yourself at the various functions that you organise? JA: When I am hosting it is not a time to sit and relax. Being part of a small volunteer committee, there is much behind the scenes work that means you do not get to enjoy the event the way a guest would, nor do I get to see an event through a guest’s eyes as I am busy project managing a multitude of tasks. But I do get to enjoy that our guests give good feedback on their levels of satisfaction post event and to hear that people had a good time and felt that the event represented value for money, as we try to ensure our events are accessible and provide good fun for all the attendees. RW: Who and what have been the major influences in your life to date? JA: I continue to be inspired by our patron Sarah Murdoch, for her unwavering support of the NBCF. Every day I am influenced by all the wonderful people who have come into my life and supported or assisted in whatever way they can. I also am inspired by the support from the racing fraternity, many of whom here in Tasmania have themselves been touched by breast cancer in some way. And I am humbled by the kind generosity of all the fantastic supporters from notable racing folk such as Caroline Searcy, Matt Hill, Dave Carlson, Adam Sangster, Gai Waterhouse and Denise Martin, all of whom have assisted the Think Pink Cup across the years, through to loyal sponsors, dignitaries and donors locally. Most of all I am amazed by all the fabulous survivors out there whose outlook on life is so positive. It makes the time and personal resources I commit worth it, to know one person can make a difference.

This saves countless valuable research dollars just in sourcing willing respondents in the right category, and also saves resources and time. Judi Adams is one busy lady and Ladies in RACING Magazine congratulates her for her outstanding work. She also has a number of other roles that she has responsibility for in a voluntary capacity. Besides heading up the fund raising event committees as the Chair for the Hobart Volunteer Committee of the NBCF delivering local events under the Lumin8 Hobart banner, she volunteers across local Hobart events such as Ten Days on the Island, the Hobart International Tennis Tournament and she is also on the organising Committee for the Hobart Mother’s Day Classic.

The Carnival begins in Hobart with the running of the Betfair Hobart Guineas on Sunday 19 January 2014 and concludes about a month later with the Betfair Launceston Cup meeting on Wednesday 26 February. More than just a racing event, the Betfair Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival is a highlight of the summer months and is a major social event for Tasmanians and interstate visitors. While the carnival is, for some, as much about fashion and parties, for those more interested in the racing it is set to attract quality fields again in 2014. The Hobart leg of the Carnival, including the Betfair Hobart Cup on Sunday 9 February, is hosted by the Tasmanian Racing Club, which was established in 1874. The first Hobart Cup was run in 1875 and was won by Ella. Last year Hobart’s major race was won by Victorian-based Hurdy Gurdy Man. The horse attempted to be the first since Zacielo in 2004 to win both the Launceston and Hobart Cups in the one year and pocket a $100,000 bonus from TattsBet.com.

Unfortunately for Hurdy Gurdy Man’s connections, he could not repeat his Hobart run in Launceston. The TattsBet.com $100,000 bonus for owners and trainers will again be on offer in 2014 and will continue to create significant interest in the Carnival. While in Hobart, if you are looking for something truly eye opening to do, look no further than MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art) – the experience is too hard to describe, you just have to experience if for yourself. The setting is stunning and is the home of Tasmania’s oldest winery boasting the famous Moorilla label. There is also an on-site brewery that produces the boutique beer Moo Brew and the restaurants are, quite simply, world class. STALLION Double Up

T

he successful Breeder Owners Bonus Scheme (BOBS) has been given an added dimension with the addition of the Stallion Double Up program, an initiative of Racing NSW which ensures even greater financial investment in the State’s breeding and racing industry. The owner(s) of a BOBS nominated horse which wins any race in NSW, excluding Group and Listed races, may take the cash bonus or elect to get twice its value by choosing a “Double-Up” Voucher. The Double Up Voucher can then be used for the purchase of a BOBS eligible horse or a share in a syndicated BOBS eligible horse at a Yearling or Ready to Run sale conducted by a participating Sales Company. For example, the owner of a BOBS nominated horse winning a Saturday metropolitan race will receive $16,000 in cash and can elect to double up, receiving $32,000 which can be used to buy a BOBS eligible horse.

The Australian racing fraternity is mourning the loss of much loved and admired jockey Desiree Gill. Desiree passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013 following a fall in a race the night before at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club. Desiree is fondly remembered as a pioneering woman in the sport and a passionate supporter and mentor for the future generation of jockeys. Racing Queensland and the National Jockeys Trust have established a fund in Desiree’s honour. Expressions of support by way of donation can be made to the following account:

“Since the Double Up option was introduced more than $15 million has been put back into the NSW breeding industry through this scheme,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V’landys. “The continued improvement of the BOBS program and its popularity has made BOBS the best bonus scheme in Australia. “It’s little wonder that 84 per cent of the yearlings on offer at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January are BOBS eligible.” From January 1st BOBS Double Up Vouchers won can also be used towards stallion service fee payments for participating NSW based stallions. A list of participating stallions will be available on the BOBS section of the Racing NSW website from May 2014. From across the globe, a love story matching two young people with a common passion. Story by Trish McIntyre • Images from Sharon Chapman

wit h LOVE

From IRELAND C

arol-Anne was born in County Clare to John and Kathleen Brassil, the youngest of five daughters. The eldest sister, Louise is married to ex jumps jockey, now trainer, Denis Leahy and they have three young boys, Michael-John, Jack and Sam. Louise designs function rooms for weddings. Emma, who works in insurance, is married to Ronan Molly, a Dubliner who has no interest in horses and they are parents of James and Lucy. Michelle is married to Gareth and they live in the South Island of New Zealand, with their little girl named Kate and Lisa and her partner Andrew live in Dubai where Lisa works in HR for an Oil and Gas Company. All the girls started riding at a very young age. They had three ponies which they used to share, Little Miss Appleby aka Judy, Legend and Jackie. Louise owned Legend; she competed with him without a lot of success. Legend used to take off flat out around the ring with Louise and skip all the jumps. The judges used to give Louise a rosette for her efforts. Emma owned Jackie, but as she was a racing pony, she was never taken to the shows. Michelle, who is a perfectionist, owned Judy and the way she used to turn her out, Carol-Anne found amazing.

Ladies in RACING

Her mother, Kathleen, was heavily involved with the horses, driving with John and the girls the length and breadth of Ireland, towing the horse float to the Agricultural Shows. Carol-Anne remembers that they had plenty of fun times, which gave them many stories to be told at a later date. She used to attend the hunts on Sundays and Thursdays, needing a note from her mother for the Thursdays to say that she had a dental appointment. When her photo appeared in the local paper one day with the caption, “The youngest member attending the hunt today”, her teacher wasn’t impressed.

68

SUMMER #17

Her father, John, was a successful jockey, initially apprenticed to Charlie Weld (Dermot’s father), before becoming too heavy and switching to the ‘up and overs’, where he rode many winners for a great Irish trainer, Mick Neville. After retiring as a jockey, John took to training for 25+ years. He has a great eye for a young national hunt horse; he would get them to win a ‘point to point’, before selling them on as a good staying steeplechaser. One of the nicest horses that went through John’s hands was ‘Cool Ground’, who won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Carol-Anne’s uncle Michael, her father’s brother, is also a successful national hunt trainer, with his biggest successes being with ‘Numbersixvalverde’, who won the Irish and English Grand Nationals, the latter over the famous Aintree circuit. After Carol-Anne finished her primary school education at Ballycar National, about 10 minutes from their home, she completed her studies at a girl’s school, Colaiste Muire in Ennis, before attending Limerick Institute of College, majoring in Business and Computers. Lisa and Carol-Anne rode mostly for other people. Carol-Anne remembers seeing a photo among the many displayed at her home, that showed her as the winner of Lead Rein Showing when she was four at the Dublin Horse Show (Ireland’s biggest), on a pony named Paulank Wet Willow, but couldn’t remember the ride. She also remembers her sisters loaning her out to different showing people who needed their pony’s to

be ridden. She is not sure if they were paid, she just knows she never received any money.

have to move on. Carol-Anne thought it must be so you can gain plenty of experience.

Carol-Anne applied for her amateur license when she turned 16, she weighed six stone nine pounds (42.2 kgs) for her first ride at Limerick, a Christmas meeting in a Ladies race. She rode a mare named ‘Talk on Corners’ and thought she finished about sixth. She had nearly five stone (37.8kgs) of saddle and lead weights. She didn’t have many more rides because of losing interest, as her father wouldn’t put her on any of his fast horses.

After seeing the jumps Carnival at Warrnambool, Carol-Anne made the decision to leave Waratah and move to Melbourne. She phoned an Irish jumps jockey, Tom Ryan, who was working with well known Victorian trainer Russell Cameron. Tom was able to organise a job for her with Russell. When she first met Russell, she thought he was very serious and she didn’t know what to make of him. How wrong she was, now she thinks he is quite hilarious as he is always joking and now claims him as her ‘Aussie’ dad.

Carol-Anne loved working with her father for five years before, at the age of 20, she went to work for John Oxx, a true gentleman, who was based right on the Curragh. She learnt a lot from him as he was extremely knowledgeable. She used to love it when he was looking over the two year olds in the evening, explaining to her about their confirmation and any weakness in the different types of horses, as well as which types would suit her father for jumping. In 2010, she applied for a J1 Visa to the United States of America, John Hassett, a successful Pin Hooker, (a person who buys young horses, does some work with them and hopefully sells them on at a nice profit), suggested she should contact Todd Fletcher in the USA for a position as a track rider. John had been an assistant trainer to Todd, looking after his Belmont stable. She didn’t really think too long about it, she just did it. She remembered asking Todd’s secretary where she had to go and was told, West Palm Beach. She googled it and found it was in Florida, so she booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. At the time she didn’t realise that Florida was about 10 times the size of Ireland. On arrival, she hopped into a taxi and asked to be taken to West Palm Beach, not knowing it was a two hour drive. After a couple of days settling in, she started riding work from 4am to 8am, generally about seven horses a day and then spent the rest of the day’s by the pool or at the beach. It was a beautiful idyllic location and she thought, “This is fantastic”. However, she found the best was yet to come. Transferring to Saratoga, which she really enjoyed, she rode some very good fillies, one of which was ‘More Than Real’ which went on to win the Breeders Cup Fillies Juvenile on the turf, plus ‘Super Saver” who won the Kentucky Derby the same year and the stable also had the extremely talented ‘Uncle Moe’ in training. In 2009 Carol-Anne, after her working holiday in the United States of America and returning to Ireland, decided to visit her sister Michelle in New Zealand. Michelle and her husband Gareth were very pleased to see Carol-Anne and receive all the latest news from Ireland. When she had returned to Ireland from the USA, CarolAnne received an email from Australia about a relatively new thoroughbred owner who had bought a farm named Waratah Thoroughbreds at Moss Vale in New South Wales. They were looking to set up a pre-training yard and were head-hunting for experienced staff. She checked it out and found it interesting, so she contacted Luke Geddes and was offered a position. She obtained a working holiday Visa, which only allows you to work for your employer for up to six months, and then you

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

Carol-Anne can’t thank Russell and his wife Judy enough for the fantastic way that they have welcomed her since her arrival at their stable. She was really happy there and was very impressed with their handling of their staff, owners and riders. She now has a share in the ownership of a ‘ladies only horse’ by Red Ribbon which Judy is syndicating. Carol-Anne rides the filly in all its track work and is very excited about the filly’s future as she is coming along extremely well. Any ladies that are interested should ring Judy on 03 9376 9225. It was at their stable that she was to meet popular Victorian jockey, Jamie Mott. Jamie asked Carol-Anne to have dinner with him, and as they say in the classics, the rest is history. Jamie and Carol-Anne talked about their future plans and decided after the Warrnambool Carnival in 2013 year that it would be a good idea if she became his riding agent.

Carol-Anne and Jamie at Warrnambool Their idea gathered momentum, with them being able to go to the races together and having the opportunity to set up their financial future. The strain of maintaining a competitive riding weight has anRACING effect on the length of a jockey’s career, so they are saving to buy a property for their future. Jamie had indicated to Carol-Anne his interest in becoming a trainer after finishing his riding career, which he said could be in the next five or so years.

Ladies in

Carol-Anne was very enthusiastic about becoming Jamie’s agent. She has a passion and a hunger for Jamie to succeed, plus they work well as a team, both receiving much pleasure when he is riding winners. She enjoys talking to the owners, trainers and other rider’s agents; in fact all the people in an Industry that she considers is full of characters.

She was quite nervous about it at first, as there is so much racing and she thought that some trainers may have a problem with her Irish accent. She also knew that she had to learn about the different weights that horses receive in a race. She thought if she booked Jamie on a horse carrying 55kgs in a 0-58 handicap on the Geelong Synthetic, she would a have a very short career. For relaxation they both love travelling up to Mt Buller in the winter months. Carol-Anne loves to ski and Jamie loves to snow board. She claimed that it’s a pity that Jamie can’t keep up with her yet. She also loves fashion and, like all young ladies, she will literally ‘shop ‘til she drops’. Cooking is another of her favourites, preparing and cooking healthy meals which are so important for a jockey. “Jamie and Brad Rawiller were chatting one day about how much weight they lose in a year and estimated it could be as high as 600kgs” she said , “If that isn’t dedication and a determination to succeed, I don’t what is”. Jamie and Carol-Anne went to Ireland at the end of July again for a family visit and she loved catching up with all her family, they are very special to her. They all went to the Galway races, as it was 30 years since her father had won the feature, ‘The Galway Plate’. They then had a memorable night out, with Jamie asking Carol-Anne’s father for her hand in marriage. At the races Jamie met with Fran Berry and Pat Smullen, who organised for him to ride at Dermot Weld’s on the Curragh. He rode work up the famous Old Vic and then headed to Naas racecourse where he rode a few more gallops, which he thoroughly enjoyed. They also spent quite some time with her sister Louise and her husband Denis in Charleville, County Cork, where Denis trains his jumpers. Carol-Anne said, “Jamie rode out a good bit with

Cox Plate Day Denis and even schooled over the steeplechase fences. I was very nervous watching, but he got a massive kick out of it. At one fence the horse made a bad mistake and I could hear him laughing”. Jamie also rode with Carol Anne’s father who has a lovely five-year-old that is going for a National Hunt Flat race (she calls them bumpers). Jamie was very impressed by him. Jamie proposed to Carol-Anne on the third of August in the Wall Garden at Adare Manor, where he went down on one knee and was very nervous. Carol-Anne said, “It was the happiest day of my life”. We wish Carol-Anne and Jamie all the very best for their future happiness, and are looking forward to receiving photos from their wedding in Ireland in 2015. Maybe I will get an invite to cover the wedding for LADIES in RACING Magazine. Carol-Anne can be contacted on; 61 431 499 523.

Jane Ormsby Jane Ormsby was born into a horse loving family. She was raised in Dural, a suburb in the rural hills district of Sydney where her father, Irwin Ormsby, a passionate race-goer, had a purpose built 25 acre property to cater for the pre-training and spelling of race-horses. She remembered having the better of two worlds, attending school in Sydney week days and being able to be at her Dad’s hobby farm on the weekends.

J

ane and one of her older sisters, Sarah started riding horses at an early age, although her younger brother, Clayton, preferred the horse power of motor bikes. Jane’s first pony at the age of four was Glen, a welsh mountain pony. Sarah and Jane enjoyed Dural Pony Club, going through the grades over several years. Sarah preferred show hacking in the early days but Jane loved the adrenaline rush of eventing. Jane’s father regularly took members of his family to the races at Randwick and Rosehill and with their mother, Helena, the girls always enjoyed ‘Fashions on the Field’. Jane’s mother was very encouraging and supportive, assisting the girls in learning to ride, enjoying being hands on, helping out with the tack and the preparation for shows. It was only natural that Jane, after completing her secondary education at Wenona, a private girls school in North Sydney, would go on to do a Sports and Exercise Degree at the University of Technology of Sydney.

Fast forwarding to today, Jane is the fiancée of well adies in RACING L known Brisbane trainer, Tony Gollan, working in his

Racing Administration along with Tony’s sister Zoe, who manages the Accounts and his mother Paulette, who looks after the office for Tony’s father Darryl who manages the Toowoomba stable, which caters for the pre-trainers. Since transferring his training base from Toowoomba to Brisbane, Tony’s stable has grown, they now have a further seven female ground staff and track-riders, including their apprentice, Tamara Tinknell and track-rider Kiaarn Holland, who travelled to Melbourne recently with the siblings, ‘Temple of Boom’ and ‘Spirit of Boom’

Their horses are generally spelled in the Darling Downs region which is rich horse country. Among the properties they use are Eureka Stud, Banchory Stud and Hill-haven. Since joining Tony in Brisbane, Jane has found that being heavily involved with a big stable brings many rewards, in spite of the long hours. She sees the Industry moving quickly, with a lot of forward planning to be done to stay in front of the herd. It is a seven day a week job and although the days can be long, with plenty of tough times, Jane enjoys the challenges and she wouldn’t want to do anything else, especially when they experience the successful times, which are fantastic. Jane first met Tony at Randwick, where he celebrated his first Group 1 success with his stable star, Temple of Boom, winning the James Boag Galaxy. At the time, Jane was a Personal Assistant to Gai Waterhouse, an experience and memory that she cherishes. Gai is definitely at the top of her list of ladies in the Industry that she admires. Jane said, “Gai attacks everything with an incredible amount of passion and enthusiasm. Her energy is amazing and infectious and very inspiring. It seemed her day was filled with kicking goals”. Jane is putting into practice many of the attributes she learnt

working for Gai, in particular the information that is sent to all of their owners. I can attest to this as we have a share in ‘Faith’n’Courage’ a 5yo mare, trained by Tony and the information we receive from the stable is second-to-none.

Jane recalled Gai receiving daily fan mail, which Gai would find the time to read, before replying to each of them personally. While with Gai, Jane had the pleasure of seeing one of her favourite horses ‘Pierro’, develop from a yearling, who went on to win the Breeders Plate and the Golden Slipper before completing the Sydney Triple Crown. She has a soft spot for all of Tony’s horses, in particular 'Temple of Boom' and coming through the ranks, a 'Falvelon' and 'More Than Ready' filly. Among her other favourites are ‘Green Moon’ and ‘Commanding Jewel’.

One of Jane’s favourite days is the atmosphere of Derby Day during the Spring Carnival at Flemington. With every race a Group race, what more could the racing enthusiast ask for! She also loves Golden Slipper day during the Autumn Carnival at Rosehill, as you have the opportunity of seeing a future star win the richest 2yo race in the world. As well as having a busy time working with Gollan Racing, Jane has started competing in eventing (which has 3 disciplines of Dressage, Cross Country and Showjumping), with an off the track thoroughbred named ‘The Clandy Man Can’. He was a good server to the Gollan stable and very successful on the Toowoomba cushion track over a mile to 2000m+. She is progressing through the lower grades, but she is confident that he can go far as he has a brilliant jump and is very brave on the cross country course.

After completing her University Degree, Jane obtained an internship with IMG Sports. This led to an opportunity to work in an insurance broking company in their sports department. While there she completed more studies and gained her Account Broking qualifications.

Jane is looking forward to the years ahead with Tony, working alongside him in the business, helping it become bigger and better in every way, maybe even being situated in Melbourne or Sydney in the future. They are also looking to have children in the next five years too, bringing up the Her initial involvement with a racing stable was with the next generation Gollan trainers. boutique racing stable called ‘Windemere Farm’, which was based in Wilberforce and run by husband and wife horse trainers, Wade and Doreen Slinkard. She enjoyed her time there immensely, as she lived there, working hands on with the horses and appreciated the support that Wade and Doreen afforded her. It was after this experience that she decided to apply for an administrative role in the racing industry, which led her to Gai Waterhouse. Jane believes that Gai certainly broke the mould of racing being a man’s domain. She said, “We have seen many ladies become successful trainers, receiving a lot of justified recognition. There are many facets that bring the racing industry together; not just the jockeys, trainers and horses, who are front and centre in the media”. Jane continued, ”It’s the females behind the scenes such as the strappers and stable hands. Now that horse racing is such a big business, the industry needs to recognise the females who work in the administrative side; CEO’s/ Secretary’s, accounts, racing managers, jockey’s agents, the list goes on…

The Heathcotes of Brisbane There’s an old saying, “Behind every successful man, there is a successful woman”. Never was this truer than when applied to the Heathcotes, Robert and Vicky. Story by Ron Williams

T

hey have been each other’s rocks since they first met overseas on a European holiday, when Rob was a very successful and popular Tour Manager for Trafalgar Tours. Vicky, wife of the well known very successful Brisbane trainer Rob, although born in Auckland, New Zealand, considers herself more of a country girl, as do the majority of the lasses from Kiwi land. After leaving school she first worked as a Personal Assistant for a legal firm, as well as spending some time in the hospitality industry. Her mother, Lynette, was born in Australia and this played a role in her decision at the young age of 21 to venture across the ‘ditch’ for the bright lights of Sydney. Her father, Barry, was a passionate harness racing enthusiast; breeding and racing many pacers over the years. Vicky used to attend thoroughbred and harness race meetings socially on occasions, which she enjoyed with her friends. Having parents from two countries, Vicky thinks that her DNA gives her the best of both worlds.

After Buffering's win in the VRC Sprint Classic When they lived for a few years in London, Vicky and Rob attended many thoroughbred race meetings with his brother Wayne, an art dealer, who had financed a bookmaker. Wayne also had a number of horses in training with a leading trainer in Australia, about which they had many a discussion. In the mid 1990’s, Vicky and Rob decided to move back to Australia to be closer to home and start a family and they decided on Brisbane due to its nice climate. At the time Rob thought about re-entering the travel industry and racing was not in their future plans. However, that was soon to change. Wayne was having problems with his trainer and Rob became his racing manager, working with the trainers and liaising with Wayne on the horses’ progress and race planning. When things didn’t work out with the trainer, Vicky said to Robert, “You have been Wayne’s racing manager for the past six months, why don’t you give it a go?”. She figured

that the way Rob ‘attacks’ most tasks, he would make a success of it. Vicky continued, “While initially hesitant to take up the challenge of training racehorses with his limited knowledge, Rob threw himself into the task, absorbing as much information as he could from industry greats Eric Kirwan and the late Bruce McLachlan”. They are also very grateful to Wayne for having the confidence in Rob to do the job.

all have their own character and whether they are fast or slow, I love helping looking after them”. After a recent resignation, Vicky is now spending a great deal more of her time in their office helping grow the business, which she finds challenging. In the New Year Vicky and Rob, together with Charmaine, are travelling to the USA for a ‘Cheer Leading’ Competition. They are also going to Las Vegas to visit Vicky’s best friend. When time permits Vicky and Rob enjoy a game of golf, but finding the time is never easy in their all consuming lifestyle.

Rob was granted his trainer’s licence in 1997 and Vicky is very proud of his successes, especially winning the Queensland Metropolitan Trainers Premiership for the last four years. Rob is equally proud of Vicky, telling the members and guests of the Victorian Racing Media Association Luncheon. how she had encouraged him to take the ‘plunge’, after he was announced as their racing ‘Personality of the Year’ at the Emerald Hotel in South Melbourne in November. The other nominees were Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody, Chris Waller and Glen Boss.

They both think it is important to have an annual family holiday, but this year went too quickly as they recently moved into a new house. Vicky is very pleased that now she doesn’t have to wake up to the smell of horse manure and an abundance of flies!

Vicky realises that being a trainer’s wife has an effect on all trainers, due to the long hours without necessarily having a lot of success. She said,” Training horses is a time consuming profession; in fact it’s a way of life, not a job. After an initial period of hesitation, my confidence around the horses and stables has grown to a stage where I happily help out giving the horses race day shampoos and of course, feeding them carrots”. Vicky and Rob have two children, Nicholas (18) and Charmaine (17), who were born shortly before Rob started training, so the early years were very tough with Rob working long hours (still does), endeavouring to make a go of it, and with Vicky looking after the children full time. Nicholas and Charmaine are very proud of their parent’s success, but racing is not their passion.

When asked how long did she think that Rob would continue training, Vicky said, ”My son Nicholas remarked that he would be like Bart Cummings and never retire, he loves it too much”. Vicky applauds Katie Page and the Magic Millions for encouraging more ladies to become involved in horse ownership with the financial incentives they offer. She loves to see more ladies taking a greater interest in the sport in various capacities. Rob Heathcote is one lucky man; he has a wife in Vicky who believes in him implicitly. They epitomise the saying, “Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal”.

Vicky loves the fashion side of racing, dressing up and enjoying a glass of bubbly, (or 5 or 6) at the races and the fun and celebrations after a win, no matter how big. She is particularly proud of Rob, now that ‘Buffering’ has finally had his first Group 1 win, after placing 10 times previously and she was ecstatic when he won two more Group1’s at his following two starts. She has a soft spot for ‘Fire up Fifi’ and ‘Solzhenitsyn’ as well as Buffering, but loves all of their horses. Vicky said, “They

Parelli Nat ural Horsemanship Interview and Images by Trish McIntyre

The Parelli Program of Natural Horsemanship was founded in the United States of America in 1981 by lifelong horseman, Pat Parelli, a horse trainer, rodeo rider, cowboy and teacher with a great love of the horse. In 1993 he was joined by his wife, Linda. The Parelli Program focuses on teaching the human rather than training the horse. Pat realized that horses already had the skills they needed to thrive in their world. He discovered that understanding the psychology, personality and nature of horses could become the basis of a deep, seamless and mutually beneficial human-horse relationship.

B

onnie McIntyre is a three star Parelli Professional who lives in Tumbarumba, New South Wales. Ladies in RACING Magazine’s Trish McIntyre spoke with Bonnie about how she became involved with the Parelli Program. TM: When did you realise you had an interest in the Parelli Program?

I have loved horses since I was a little girl and my first pony was a brown Shetland, he was adorable and equally as naughty!! My sister Maddelin also rode at the time and both my parents rode for a period when I was a child. My mother and Maddelin still enjoy the horse for leisure. I never went to Pony Club; instead I rode most the time at a wild speed around our property. As I grew up I had a number of horses. I first discovered the Parelli Program thanks to a mare I had called Casey, which I was unable to stop. We tried numerous bits and different things with no luck. Despite my lack of concern about having no brakes, my parents were quite fearful for my safety. We then sourced a local Parelli Program Instructor, and everything completely changed. I could ride Casey in a halter or a bit and I was safe. I was in control and my parents could relax. I also learned to enjoy doing many things with my mare other than just speeding around!

adies in RACING L My interest in horses and the concept of the Parelli Program

grew stronger as did the relationship and results with my horses. I knew I wanted to be a Parelli Professional and teach others what I had learned. After finishing school I surrounded myself with Parelli Professionals and soaked up as much information as I could, constantly building on my horsemanship. I was rewarded and offered a full scholarship to travel to the International Parelli centre in the USA. I spent nine months there before returning home. At home I continued my horsemanship

education and also teaching students before returning to the USA, where I rode with Pat Parelli daily, developing and preparing horses for him, and assisting him at cutting shows. I am now back in Australia developing my horses, teaching students, continuing to further my horsemanship and teaching skills. I spent three months studying full time with four star Parelli Professional, Kaye Thomas. Later I started as an Entry Level Residency Student at the Australian Parelli Centre, where I did lots of facility work in the Centre, working in the office answering phone calls, emails and packaging lots of merchandise. It was a fantastic experience. During my time there I also participated in the first ever Australian Fast Track and was given a position to attend an externship at the International Parelli Centre in the USA, which was less than two weeks after I had finished the Fast Track! I began my Externship on April 11th, 2011, taught by another four star Parelli Professional, Berin Macfarlane, at the Florida, USA campus. We remained at that campus for six weeks and then made the trek across to the Colorado campus in Pagosa Springs. I spent the remaining six weeks of my externship there. At the end of my externship I achieved a passing grade to progress to the internship and a one star instructor rating. (Before travelling to the USA I had already passed my OL, LIB, FS and had a resubmit on my Finesse). During my final testing Berin noticed what was needed to complete my Finesse savvy and therefore I was also awarded my Black String! I immediately moved into the intern program, during that time I was involved in several Game of Contact (GOC) courses, I taught in a Fast Track course, was involved in the filming for the Game of Contact DVD pack, rode in Linda’s

Instructor course, and participated in Pat’s Wow With Cows course. At the 2011 Savvy Summit I was awarded my two star instructor rating. We then returned to Florida where I taught on a Flex Track, Fast Track and helped with logistics for Linda's GOC course. I returned to Australia for six months where I taught another Fast Track and continued with my own horsemanship endeavours. In June 2012 I flew back to Colorado to be an Apprentice at Pat's Performance barn, riding every day with Pat and some of his top horses including Magic, Slider, Spark Plug, Merlin, Bobby Sox, the list goes on!! During my travel to the USA, I spent the summers in Colorado at a small town called Pagosa Springs, with an altitude equal to Australia’s highest peak; the scenery just took your breath away. We spent four months of the year at Pagosa, arriving early June and leaving late September, to avoid the depths of snow that falls during the winter. It is a three day trip and we move about 30 horses down to the winter ranch located in Florida, which is known as the Sunshine State. The ranch in Florida is located in the Marion County, which is regarded as the Horse Capital of the world; it has a large and very successful racing industry, along with many other equine breeds and sports. I plan to travel more in the coming years both within Australia and overseas, particularly the USA and Europe.

adies L The use of in the RACING Parelli Program and the concept of Natural TM: Are the numbers of females in this profession growing?

Horsemanship as a whole are becoming more widespread. People are seeking more harmony with their horses through natural methods. At this stage the field of Natural Horsemanship is more female dominated. A progressive program is becoming more widely known over the world and is now being used in the equine sports industry. TM: What benefits does it give to the handler and the horse? The Parelli Program is an extensive systematic program based on the concept of love, language, and leadership in

equal doses. Its aims are to enable horse owners to be able to read their horses behaviours and learn how to respond appropriately, so that the horse can become more calm, connected and responsive. The program is unlike many methods where force, fear and intimidation are used to make the horse do what the human is asking. There are endless benefits for the horse, the program is based around how horses naturally interact with each other, so it’s natural for them and easy to understand. The further you progress through the program the stronger the relationship becomes between the horse and its owner. Parelli offers a natural approach to horse training, using psychology to allow horse lovers of all breeds, levels and disciplines to achieve success without force, partnership without dominance, teamwork without fear, willingness without intimidation and harmony without coercion. TM: Do you have private lessons and well as group? Not everyone learns best in a group environment, therefore private lessons are a great opportunity for them to gain one on one assistance in the particular area that they would like to progress. Private lessons are a great way to get your specific questions answered and walk away with a wealth of new skills to improve upon. They can be focused around any one Savvy at a time and within the period of one to two hours. Private lessons generally have one or two people. TM: Have you branched into the Thoroughbred industry? The Parelli program can be applied to all breeds of horses, disciplines or sports. It’s not about racing, dressage, jumping, hunting, polo etc. It’s about giving horses a foundation before specialisation. Foundation being like primary and high school for children, they all have a similar learning experience, then specialisation being like university where a specific topic is applied. For an example of how a Parelli Program could help thoroughbreds in the racing industry, it is common to see horses that have trouble loading into the starting gates. This can create a possible dangerous situation for the horses,

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

the jockeys and also the attendants. The Parelli Program is well known for solving issues like this, by working with and for the horse to make it their idea to go into a confined space and therefore a positive experience, where it is safer for all involved. In the future Parelli might come to have larger involvement in the thoroughbred industry. A Parelli Professional in the USA who was in the industry prior to his journey in Parelli, is now working with race horses and complementing his knowledge.

TM: Where do you think your profession will take you? My goal is to further develop my skills, and increase my Star rating as an instructor and become qualified within Parelli as a Horse Development Specialist. In the future I will set up a facility from which I will train horses and teach people Parelli Natural Horsemanship. I would also like to compete within the English sports with my horses. TM: Do you work/train from your property? I currently live in Tumbarumba NSW, where I train my own horses. I teach locally and also travel interstate to teach; I also have taught in the USA during my time over there and plan to make trips to Europe in the future. Bonny has the dedication, passion, and empathy to help your horses have a better life. Turf & Industry Tidbits Australian Stud Book

For the first time in its history, the Australian Stud Book (ASB) has appointed a lady, Ms Jacqueline Stewart as the eighth keeper of the Nation’s official record of thoroughbred breeding. Jacqueline, who is the current Deputy Keeper, succeeds Michael Ford, who has served in the role for 10 years and will stand down at the end of 2013. The 135-yearold ASB is co-owned and administered by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) and the Australian Turf Club (ATC).

Jockey’s Premierships across Australia as at December 17th, 2013 Very healthy battles are being fought in Australia for the various States, metropolitan and country titles and the female jockeys are giving their male counterparts a good run for their money in a number of them. In South Australia senior jockey Clare Lindop and apprentice Jamie Kah are sharing honours with Clare leading the metropolitan area with 21 wins with Jamie second (20), Jamie leading the country area with 24 wins, Libby Hopwood equal second (20) and Clare fifth (17). Jamie is also leading the State title with 44 wins from Clare second (38), Libby equal sixth (25), with Caitlin Forrest (14) and Amy Herrmann (13) in the top 20. In Victoria, Linda Meech is third on both the State and country titles with 43 and 42 wins respectively. Nikita Beriman is eighth (34) on the State and sixth (30) on the country order. New South Wales is a little tougher with Kathy O’Hara (15) equal 15th in the metro area, Rachael Murray (27) equal 11th and Winona Costin equal 16th in the country, with Rachael (29) equal 17th in the State. Queensland star apprentice Tegan Harrison is flying the flag for the girls in the metro area with 20 wins and sharing fourth place, with fellow apprentice’s Maija Vance, Janette K. Jonson and Priscilla Schmidt all in the top 20 with six wins each. In the country Sonja Wiseman with 25 wins is equal fourth, RACING closely followed by Emma Ljung (21), Skye Bogenhuber (20), Gemma Steele (20) and Ruby Ride (18). In the State title Tegan (29) is equal seventh and Sonja (25) equal 14th.

Also doing well in the country is Danielle Conroy (15), Natasha (14), Renee Forrest (12) and Melissa Milner (9). Three of the girls are in the top 20 for the State with Shelby (23) equal seventh, Natasha (21) equal ninth and Danielle (15), equal 14th.

Tasmanian apprentice, Sigrid Car with 17 wins is equal third in their title, also in the top 20 are Kim Moore (7), Chantal Wills (6), Georgie Catania (5) and Rhonda Mangan (3).

In the Northern Territory Felicia Bergstrand with 10 wins is second in the metro area, with Kacie Connor on top of the country ladder with 18 wins. Kacie is also leading in the State title with 20 wins from Felicia (11), Melanie Tindall (8) and Jan Cameron (5). The Australian Capital Territory sees Deanne Panya equal fourth with seven wins and Winona Costin equal ninth with three wins. All the Premierships always seem to go down to the wire and it’s a very game or knowledgeable person who can predict their outcome. The leading female contenders for National honours are Jamie Kah (46), Linda Meech (44) and Clare Lindop (38), who occupy eighth, equal ninth and equal 16th respectively. Linda Meech (42) is sixth and Nikita Beriman (30) equal 15th in the country while Clare Lindop (21) is equal tenth in the metro ladder, only one win in front of Tegan Harrison and Jamie Kah who are equal 17th with 20 wins each.

Racing for Equality A very interesting article written by journalist Peter Rolfe, was published in the Melbourne Herald Sun on October 24th, 2013, it stated that female jockeys want paid parental leave and their own change rooms. They are calling for more women’s rights in racing amid claims they miss out on paid parental leave and sometimes they are forced to change in the men’s dressing rooms at various locations across the nation. Under the rules of racing, female jockeys are obligated to inform Stewards of their pregnancy by the first trimester and immediately stop riding trackwork, trials and races, which stops their earning capacity six months from childbirth. But under Federal Law, women must have worked at least 10 of the 13 past previous months prior to having a baby to qualify for financial support; paid up to 18 weeks to help care for the child. A report released by the Australian Jockeys’ Association, Racing for Equality, will urge the Federal Government to amend paid parental legislation to exempt female jockeys from eligibility criteria. Victorian Jockeys’ Association Des O’Keeffe said, “Female jockeys were handicapped by the Commonwealth eligibility test putting them at odds with racing industry rules. A lot of the girls, especially in rural areas, simply can’t find alternative employment”. He continued, “Even if they could, why should they when women in other fields have access to federal assistance that they are denied.

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

The report also called for female-only jockey change rooms and a national task force to provide for jockeys at the end of their career, including employment support and training. Despite a boom in female rider numbers, it said some racing clubs had failed to move with the times and provide adequate facilities for women to change, shower and prepare for races. “Many of the facilities around the country are inappropriate. Inadequate, even unreasonable and it’s not good enough that women have to put up with that in 2013,” Mr O’Keeffe said. For the latest racing information visit www.heraldsun.com.au

T

he Broken Hill St Patrick’s Race Club began in early 1965 when John Toms, a well known local trainer thought of a way to boost local racing and help alleviate the desperate financial position of the local Catholic schools. During a game of golf with Catholic administrator, Father Pat Murray, John suggested that by using volunteer labour from within the Catholic School system, they could establish an annual race meeting offering attractive prize money, trophies, food and drink and later – fashions on the field. Excited by the prospect, they discussed the idea with other racing enthusiasts; a committee was formed to commence planning for the inaugural race meeting on Saturday, 19 March 1966. The innovative venture of this committee which met for the first time on Wednesday, 15th September 1965, captured the imagination of Broken Hill. The inspirational foresight of John Toms and the Irish persuasion of Father Murray led to Broken Hill becoming host to the most widely publicised and richest “one day country race meeting” in Australia. There can be no doubtRACING that neither John Toms nor Father Murray could have envisaged the great tourism potential that the St Patrick’s Race Meeting would become for the city of Broken Hill and its community.

These visitors are people who have moved away from Broken Hill for many reasons, family and friends of people who live or have lived in Broken Hill, race goers and people who require a good day out without it costing a fortune. They have nearly 8,000 at their race meetings of which half are from away. The significance of the event to the Broken Hill community and the enormous voluntary contribution of the members of the committee has been acknowledged with a number of awards. The Race Club has been recognised at Racing New South Wales Country Awards for Excellence on three occasions receiving the award for the Best NSW Community Race Meeting for 1998/99, 2000/2001 and 2004/05. A Tribute t o

JEAN CARROLLOAM

1923- 2013

Jean Carroll has left a lasting legacy in the Millinery World Compiled by Cathryn Meredith

‘They looked at her and said, yes, 14 years old … We’ll give her a start and in a fortnight we will know whether she’ll make a milliner or not’

I

t is with much sadness that Australia lost one of its most beloved milliners earlier this year– Jean Carroll aged 90 years. Jean Robson was born on February 11, 1923, a daughter to Robert and Jessie Robson. When she was only 13 years and 11 months old, Robert took Jean to Moray Millinery in the city, one of Sydney most successful millinery businesses, to see if she would make a suitable apprentice. Jean was accepted and her first job was to put in headbands, take messages, roll up ribbons and veiling , put stock away, and wipe down tables at the end of the day, all this for 12 shillings and sixpence a week ($1.25).

However Jean marvelled at the prospect of making adies in L wonderful hats.RACING

And what a milliner she was as her career spanned over 75 years, including work with Sydney TAFE and NIDA, and ended when she retired in 2012 at 89 years of age. Jean stayed at Moray Millinery for 30 years, when women wore hats to complete an outfit and Australia’s millinery industry thrived. In the 1960s fashions changed, beehive hairstyles came in and it wasn’t necessary to wear a hat to church. About the time ladies started baring their heads Jean made the swap to theatre millinery. Her designs were placed on the heads of race-goers, opera singers and Australian actors Bert Newton

and Cate Blanchett. She was commissioned for many TV productions including Sirens, Mission Impossible 2, Bodyline, Matrix 2 and Robbery Under Arms including Baz Luhrmann's Broadway production La Boheme and many more. In the theatre millinery industry she has, amongst others, made hats for films, television, stage productions, musicals, the ballet, the opera, spectaculars, the Olympic Games opening ceremony, casinos and Disneyland on Parade. She even took a week off work to make hats for her grandsons’ Scouts theatrical production! Jean’s work has been featured in many articles, books and exhibitions including The Jean Carroll Exhibition sponsored by NIDA 2004. In 2005 Jean was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the theatrical arts as a designer and teacher of theatrical millinery. In 2011 she was honoured by TAFE NSW as a Sydney Institute ambassador. Sydney TAFE education program manager Connie Hart remembered her friend with much affection. “Jean loved teaching. She said her first love was passing on her knowledge to a new generation of milliners,” Connie said. “Her motto was ‘knowledge is there to give to others’. She was a hard task-master in her classes expecting nothing but the best from her students.

www.ladiesinsportpublications.com.au

“Jean said that she ‘loved seeing how hats grew … once you put it on a head it’s alive. It’s the character – whether it’s a policeman, ballet dancer or nurse’.” Sydney TAFE theatre costume teacher Roslyn O’Dell said that Jean selflessly volunteered large amounts of time, making herself available to students who required extra advice and reassurance for their theatrical millinery projects. “Even long after their training was finished, ex-students who were then working in costume showrooms, or launching their own millinery labels would still keep in contact with Jean, asking advice that would bring their creations to life … and as generous as always, she would be their mentor and make time to help them, and always with a sense of humour,” Roslyn said. “She fuelled the passion of many students who subsequently have made successes of their careers in both theatrical and fashion millinery.” Ultimo teacher Bronwyn Shooks, with the benefit of the wealth of Jean’s knowledge, carries on Jean’s legacy in teaching Sydney TAFE students millinery skills. Check out the facebook page dedicated to Jean for more images and information about her amazing life. Carole Barr Testimony. The last time I saw Jean was at the Textile Arts Forum Australia convention in the Blue Mountains in April, she was a guest of honour and had an exhibition of her headpieces during the forum. She spoke at this event and swanned around charming people. She was so vibrant and interested, I believe her passion for millinery actually kept her going. She was working right up to the end and never stopped to take a break. Millinery really was her life. At the end of the forum cocktail party we were all tired and ready to go home, Jean wanted to go out for dinner, she was tireless. She always told us that she put her long healthy life down to eating prunes soaked in gin every morning!! The first time I heard this I thought she was joking, oh no, she did actually eat this little treat every morning, and she giggled when she told us that she liked the end of the week because she got to drink the prune soaked gin. At her funeral prunes soaked in gin was served to toast her magnificent life. I think we milliners should take a leaf out of her book and treat ourselves to this little ritual every year in her honour. Jean Carroll Memorial - Sunday 4th August By Christine Martin Jean Carroll was a long standing and valued member of the Millinery Association of Australia. Her generosity and humility both with her students and other Milliners was well known. Jean’s warmth with everyone and her ability to make you feel special encouraged you to achieve and work hard. A quality seldom found. Our interstate members were very fortunate that Jean attended and taught at all our MAA millinery conventions, in both Adelaide and Melbourne. Unable to fly, she still travelled by car, bus or train, a feat and challenge we all admired. In 2010 Jean was thrilled to be inducted into the MAA Hall of Fame. This award meant that her membership, plus other benefits, was then free. Her dedication to Millinery was such, that each year she still sent a cheque to the Association in gratitude. Her request was to use the money for postage or other necessities so as to continue her support within the Association. Again a further expression of her generosity After her retirement, Jean was still involved with millinery. She kept up to date with all our MAA news, and often wrote or phoned with an encouraging message about our upcoming scheduled events. She was disappointed not to be able to attend our recent convention in Brisbane, due to her health. However she was delighted to be on the judging panel for our inaugural MAA Scholarship. The winner announced at the Convention. At the time we were of course unaware this would be her last official duty for the Association.

Ladies in RACING

Before her passing while in hospital, Jean still wanted to know the details of the Brisbane Convention and the Scholarship Winner. What remarkable strength. To all who were fortunate to have known her, we were truly blessed. The Millinery Association of Australia in particular would like to acknowledge all she has done and the love she has given and shared with all us. Rest in Peace dear Jean.

Race into SUMMER With the Summer season here Perry Cutten embraces pieces that will create instant impact. Bold colours in Aegean Blue, Rose and Tangelo paired with Graphic Animal Prints, showcase styles that are perfect for the race season. Elegant Navy and Black will guide you effortlessly through the streets and Ladylike Lace gives dreamy styles. Add Crisp, Cool White Linen and you have all that is needed to enjoy a stylish Summer ahead. Designers take a modern twist on the traditional for Summer 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colourful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, designers use colour to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.
Three very adaptable pastels sit on one end of the palette, and, because we are so accustomed to seeing them as nature’s background, they can be creatively combined with any other colour in the spectrum. Placid Blue, like a picture-perfect, tranquil and reassuring sky, induces a sense of peaceful calmness, while Violet Tulip, a romantic, vintage purple, evokes wistful nostalgia. Similar to the verdant shade of springtime foliage, Hemlock, a summery, ornamental green, provides a decorative touch that’s very different from the greens of recent seasons. Pair any of these versatile pastels with a bolder hue for an au courant look. Sand, a lightly toasted and amiable neutral, conjures images of the beach and the carefree days of summer. Try pairing Sand with Hemlock for perfect, natural balance. Paloma serves as a quintessential neutral, interesting enough to be worn alone or combined with any colour for sophisticated poise. Cayenne, a high-pitched red, adds a dash of spicy heat to neutrals, and heightens the excitement when mixed with Freesia, a blazing yellow that is sure to illuminate wardrobes this season. A tropical, floral-inspired shade, Freesia’s warmth and energy help set the stage for Celosia Orange, an optimistic, spontaneous hue. Pair Celosia Orange with Violet Tulip for a captivating vision, much like the setting summer sun. The palette is brought full circle with Radiant Orchid, a bold counterpart to Violet Tulip, and Blue, a scintillating, polar opposite to Placid Blue. Surprisingly, these strong, vibrant colours also pair well across the palette: They are perfect companions to pastels, and add confidence and vivacity when mixed with other bold colours.

For more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on colour, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season’s most important colour trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for Summer 2014. Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director, Pantone Colour Institute “This season, consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium. While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colours allows for experimentation with new looks and colour combinations.”

FASCINATORS at t he FASHION FESTIVAL B

risbane's annual Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival is a showcase for the most creative of Queensland's fashion designers; so naturally, The Hat Box was once again invited to participate. Owner Dale Olsson gave her talented milliners free rein to design something "out of the box", and they certainly rose to the brief. Their innovative designs wowed the audience with their brilliant colour and stunning shapes. Milliners included Patricia Balmer, Ann Boyle, Hatmaker, Kylie Heagney and Phillip Rhodes. With the Fashion Festival and the Spring Racing Carnival over for the year, they are now concentrating their efforts on creating original pieces for the 2014 Magic Millions. "It will be a colourful January on the Gold Coast, brights work so well with our glorious sunshine," said Dale, who is taking orders for bespoke hats now. See her for your special creation at the upper level of the heritage-listed Brisbane Arcade.

Heaven

F

iji is at the heart of the South Pacific, easily accessible from Europe and the rest of the world. Yasawa Island is among the most remote and untouched isles of Fiji, yet still only a 35-minute flight from the international airport at Nadi. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa is reached via its own private airstrip, inaccessible to other travelers. Discretely hidden among the palms on a stretch of pristine white beach, facing west towards the setting sun. The resort’s only neighbours are in a handful of traditional Fijian villages nearby, with no other development on the island. There are 11 pristine white beaches to choose from for a secluded picnic one of which was voted by Expedia No. 4 best beach in the world in 2010. Indulge in heavenly seclusion in an area renowned for its velvety, white sand beaches and crystal clear tropical waters. At Yasawa Island Resort & Spa there are no other resorts, no televisions, and no traffic; just the sounds of the palm trees swaying and the ocean lapping mere steps from your private villa. The newly refurbished resort features a new beachfront bar, boutique, lounge, and library. The new al fresco restaurant with ocean views features an air-conditioned wine room – perfect for romantic dinners. The 18 traditionally thatched, beachfront bures are understated in their luxury. Hidden among the palms, each airconditioned bure has a discreet outdoor shower; an expansive deck with daybeds to wile away the afternoons; a separate living area with mini bar and stereo; a hammock strung between the palms; and your own thatched cabana with sun RACING loungers on the edge of Yasawa’s famous white.

SUMMER #17

Yasawa might be an island of isolation, but it’s also an island of plenty.

The ultimate among Yasawa’s luxury accommodation is Lomalagi — the Honeymoon Bure, secluded at the end of the beach with its own private pool, expansive tropical gardens and private beautiful white sand beach. This is Yasawa at its best – absolute paradise and complete seclusion. Yasawa might be an island of isolation, but it’s also an island of plenty. All meals ala carte meals are included in the tariff at Yasawa, promising contemporary cuisine at every sitting and an emphasis on the succulent seafood caught daily in surrounding waters. Lobster plucked from the nearby reefs is a specialty. Dine at the restaurant, on the beach, in your bure or beneath the stars - the choice is yours. Our international chef’s creations highlights the fresh produce that is delivered daily and sourced as much as possible from the surrounding villages on Yasawa Island. Variety abounds and menus change daily accenting the freshest, regional ingredients of the day. Solitude. It’s our favourite pastime at Yasawa. So whatever you choose to do during your stay, you’ll be free to enjoy it in peace. Take a complimentary picnic on a deserted beach. Visit nearby villages to meet the local children or hear the church choir. Swim in the crystal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon or snorkel among corals and tropical fish.
