bejeweled with 26 Australian opals weighing approximately 1447 carats (est. $150,000 - $200,000). Created by Australian Master Milliner Ann Maree Willett, “Deep Blue Sea” was inspired by the undersea life of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The piece boasts precious opals mined at Lightning Ridge in Australia and has been worked on by acclaimed opal carvers, opal micro sculptures, and opal setters. The changing play of colour and fluid shapes of the stunning opals (among which are crystal, light and black forms of the gemstone) recall the jewel-like quality of life on a coral reef. “Deep Blue Sea”, one of the most valuable hats ever to be offered at public auction, will go umder the hammer at Bonhams & Butterfields as part of the “The Nature of Opals” sale on November 10, 2010 in San Francisco. Horses canter, hard held to the barrier stalls, their jockeys keenly focused on the task ahead. Flashing lights blaze above and the barriers

open to unleash the adrenalin charged field onto the track as they fight for racing supremacy. The spectacular show of pure horse power is illuminated by one thousand globes, cutting through the inky black of a Melbourne night. The electrifying atmosphere heralds another night of entertainment at Moonee Valley Racing Club, one of Australia’s premier racing venues. The current night racing season at the Valley kicked off with a night of stars under the stars. The Season Launch featured stakes racing at its finest, enticing the best horses onto the track in late September against a dramatic backdrop of the cityscape. Moonee Valley Racing Club has long been esteemed for an innovative approach to horse racing. The Club chose to light up the night in the tradition of the great international racing centre of Hong Kong, and the 60 light towers around the course were officially switched on in 1998 before a crowd of 32,000 people. Moonee Valley CEO, Michael Browell is quick to explain, ‘Night racing is vastly different to day racing. Racing under lights adds another dimension; it’s a more exciting product. The horses, the jockeys, the atmosphere – it’s all much more vibrant at night. The focus is 10

To commemorate the 150-year milestone of the ‘People’s Cup’, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is staging a year long celebration, which will include an eight-month international tour with the iconic Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy to more than 40 destinations across Australia and around the world. The Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy is a stunning 18 carat gold trophy valued at $150,000. Noted for its “Loving Cup” design, the trophy is one of the most identifiable sporting trophies anywhere in the world. They could come to the races but under certain conditions … his conditions. What these conditions were we know from an Order published in the Sydney Gazette the Colony’s first newspaper published by the convict printer George Howe. would have had too many followers and as there were no bookies you couldn’t have a bet anyway. However, at this very first race meeting in Australia some of the traditions were there which were to be set into the racing inheritance of Australian Racing. The bugler is still to be heard and the red-coated Clerk of the Course continues to grace our tracks, the presentation speech in the Saddling Enclosure which we hear at all our meetings could well have come directly from Hyde Park. This racing inheritance from the English racing tradition brought with Governor Macquarie continued in Australian racing with the naming of our principal races and racecourses – the Derby, the St Leger, the Kings Cup, etc. And the ritual in the Saddling Enclosure and the presentation ceremony which can be heard on almost any Australian racecourse as if it came directly from the Governor Macquarie Agenda.

A very early map sketch which marks the Hyde Park racing track, somewhere near the present St James Station opposite the David Jones Store (NSW Public Library)

While it is not certain just what was the layout of the Hyde Park course on the Common – there are varying descriptions of the Common and the Park – a very early map marks in the racecourse showing a clockwise running, finishing somewhere near the present St James Station opposite the David Jones Store. The clockwise running continued to be followed in all racecourses in NSW, but not so in other Colonies. Melbourne artist Harold Freedman in his large mural at Flemington Racecourse has painted his impression of this day at Hyde Park. There was, of course, another tradition of Australian racing soon to be established as the Colonial settlement spread into the pastoral and timber regions of the Colony and the horse became the most valuable means of transport and the gambling instinct of the gold rushes gave a special character to the betting ring and the role of the bookmaker in the formation of an Australian racing tradition. Australian racing can perhaps look back to Lachlan Macquarie and Banjo Paterson when we seek to find the genesis of Australian Racing in this Bi-Centenary year of the ‘Sport of Kings’ and Colonists in 2010. 26

Sullo says … Hello! Sullo here!

And I say Spring is the best time of the year. The sun comes out, the roses bloom, the lamb tastes great and best of all, Australia’s top racehorses step on to the track to contest some of the greatest races in the world.

And I say the last thing I want on a beautiful Spring day is to be lining up in a queue to get my bets on when I can get everything the Tote offers and more at Sportingbet.com.au. Sportingbet’s Maxidiv gives punters the best of both worlds. Why waste your time deciding whether to back a horse on the Tote or at a fixed price when Maxidiv pays you at the best of the three Australian Totalizator’s or official on course bookmaker’s starting price – whichever is higher. If you like your exotics – Quinellas, Exactas, Trifectas, First Fours, Quaddies or even Pick 6s – you’ll still find them all at Sportingbet. com.au. It’s like a Tote with fries. Extras like

If you take a multitude of exotics you’ll love Sportingbet’s Super Exotics which allow punters to place all their exotic bets on a single race at once. Just choose your runners and Sportingbet will combine those runners in any exotic you wish to take … at the push of a single button. At Sportingbet we come up with any number of racing specials during Spring and all year round. Specials such as the King of the Spring where punters can back a jockey to be the star of the Spring, totals of winning saddlecloths for a meeting or the leading group one jockey over the course of a season. I say: “Why would you bet anywhere else this Spring or any other time because there’s no better bet than a Sportingbet!”

BELIEVE ’N ACHIEVE

By Ron L. Williams Believe ’n Achieve – The winner of more races than any other three year old in Australia in 2009/2010. A genuine wish will sometimes come true that cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars and some only return a very small percentage of their purchase price. That is why I will always be a small owner, and I prefer fillies because they generally have a better residual value, unless you are lucky enough to have a good colt that doesn’t need to be gelded. The last idea I would like to mention is that you can form your own syndicate with family and/ or friends. You then buy whatever percentage of the horse that you want and then divide the costs by the number of people that you have in your syndicate. I have now done this with my two sons and one son-in-law and their wives. Should you wish to contact me please call 0412 434 186. Spring Racing in Sout h There’s nothing like a good field at springtime

and South Australian racegoers are saddling up for a stellar season of racing ahead. With a plethora of events scheduled for metropolitan, provincial and country racing clubs, there’s no doubt the time has arrived to celebrate the season at one of the state’s most colourful race days.

Spring in the City With spring in full-swing, fabulous fashions are set to make their way to Adelaide’s Allan Scott Park Morphettville over the coming months – with headline events including Caulfield Cup Day and Melbourne Cup Day. Aust ralia Regional racing revs up

Down the coast a little, the Langhorne Creek Vignerons Day on November 21 will combine the best of country hospitality with the excitement of the races. There’s nothing like the pick of the bunch and Vignerons Day brings the best local food, wine and produce together for a vibrant day of racing in the peak of spring. Held at Strathalbyn Racecourse, Langhorne Creek Vignerons Day takes on a festival feel as punters enjoy a glass or two of the finest local wine amongst the picturesque rose gardens. Vignerons Day isn’t the only great event to be held at the Strathalbyn Racecourse over the spring and summer months. record crowds expected again in 2011 to enjoy a day of quality racing, fine fashions and exceptional food and wine. Dubbed the most glamorous of all South Australia’s provincial race meetings, the Strathalbyn Cup is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up for the chance to win some great prizes in the Fashions on the Field competition. There’s also a fashion parade, live music and great hospitality – and better yet it’s just a picturesque 40 minute drive from Adelaide to get there. sees the running of its most prestigious race – the Taminga Hotel Clare Cup – on November 28. One of the world’s most enviable wine regions, the town of Clare celebrates all that makes the region great on Clare Cup day – with great food, great wine and great entertainment on offer at the track. This year’s Cup will be a family affair, with face painting, colouring competitions and even an early visit from Santa. The fashion savvy will also have their opportunity to show off their latest spring/summer attire in the Fashions on the Field Competition Heading south-east, the Limestone Coast Spring Racing Carnival from October 10 – November 25 combines country charm with some of the State’s best food and wine. Picturesque vineyards make for idyllic backdrops at a number of these local clubs where the action on the track is complemented by all the fun and frivolity on the sidelines.

Festive nights by the track They’re the perfect way to spend a balmy summer evening and the Twilight Races will be in full swing again this year – with race meetings in the city, Adelaide Hills and South-East. The Flight Centre Christmas Twilight Races on December 17 are an ideal way to celebrate the end of the working year with colleagues, or the start of the festive season with friends. Enjoy a night out at the races with plenty of entertainment trackside including bands and DJs playing well into the night. Getting in to the Christmas spirit is made easy with a range of private and syndicated hospitality options available as well as trackside picnic sites. Mount Gambier Racing Club and Oakbank Racing Club will also host Twilight Races on December 3 and December 10 respectively, with Photography: ellejphotography.com.au

both events expected to attract a mass of racegoers ready to welcome the festive season and enjoy some great horse racing at the same time. Since earning its provincial status, Mount Gambier Racing Club now has more prize money on offer so keen punters can expect better racing than ever before. Whether you’re a local or looking for an escape from hectic pre-Christmas city life, regional twilight racing events will have something for everyone. Making Headlines Just for You

Some would say that timing is everything and Queensland milliner Sandy Aslett would be the first to agree. Since leaving her role as Industry Career Advisor, Sandy has been totally absorbed by her long term passion for millinery.

A background in the fashion including high profile boutique management and seven years in her own fashion business has set the path for Sandy’s entry to the world of millinery. Today the “Hats By Sandy A” label is firmly established with fashion awards from Darwin, Cairns in the north to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast with designs that cover Race wear, Cocktail, Designer headpieces, Bridal and resort style. Sandy also has a love of the bygone years of the 1920s to 50s and enjoys adding, a modern twist to these timeless styles. The current resurgence in headwear for both men and women has seen Sandy’s tranquil Buderim studio on the Sunshine Coast alive

with activity. Outgoing and energetic Sandy has a flair for design, shape and color to perfectly enhance her clients chosen outfit. The recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane was an opportunity to showcase her designs when asked by Noosa designer Tulipani for five pieces that would compliment their range on the catwalk. A quick brief, a colour swatch and a creative mind was all that was needed to match this exciting resort wear. By continuously training and working alongside some of the great Australian milliners, Sandy ensures that she is constantly striving to achieve not only high quality craftsmanship and stunning designs but also that special individuality that every woman desires to complete her outfit.

A New Haven for the ultimate indulgence

By Karen Philips

Having indulged in spa experiences around the globe and tried everything from heated bamboo therapy to thermal mud packs, I have to admit I am a bit of a pamper-junkie. So when a new spa opens that boasts everything from a bevy of hi-end treatments to being set overlooking the Broadwater in one of Australia’s most desirable shopping and dining precincts, I feel the sudden urge for a bit of spoiling. As the new jewel in the crown of the glitzy Marina Mirage on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Esteem Day Spa is the ultimate destination for a girls pamper day out or a sanctuary for the soul. Its extensive services include everything from indulgent pamper packages to a total wellness menu and no expense has been spared in the creation of this world-class facility.

Secondly, Age Intervention Prime delivers a potent combination of anti-aging and skin-soothing technologies that dramatically improve the appearance of ageing and sun-damaged skin. Skin looks and feels fresher and younger from the first application and results are progressively more noticeable with continued use. Our testers told us that after only one application they knew it was the best primer they had ever used. After the second, they loved Prime. By the third application, the consensus was they “couldn’t live without it!” … and the results only get better! For information visit www. janmariniaustralia.com.au or www.erase.com.au

“FINALLY made it to my Jan Marini facial and I’m in love! My skin looked sensational afterwards and have been recommending it to everyone ever since. Love it!” Sigourney Cantelo Beauty Director, Vogue Magazine

“To be honest, my skin has never looked better! I wondered if it was just a coincidence at first but my skin has stayed glowing and blemish free. As you understand, wearing lots of makeup under lights is a recipe for disaster... so I’m really, really pleased with the results.” Kim Watkins – Co-host Network Ten “9am with David & Kim”

“I have been using skin products on a daily basis for over twenty years. In the past three months since I have switched to Jan Marini my skin has never looked better. I am thrilled with the Jan Marini Skin Research and wish I had made the move a lot earlier.” Brigitte Duclos Television and Radio Presenter

“What can I say?? You were right. I absolutely love the product (have read up about it on the internet too, very impressive). I have given all of my other skin care products to my mum and sis, this is all I use now!!” Melissa Hetherington Actor and Television Presenter

“I’ve tried many different products to try to control my problem skin and thought it was as clear as it could get. But after using Teen Clean for only a few weeks I had no pimples at all for the first time in years! Finally my skin is manageable again.” Sam Clark – Actor

“Being the Hair and Make-Up Supervisor for Neighbours I understand that skincare is one of the most important factors in keeping the cast looking and feeling their best. Throughout the years I have tried so many products but never has a product range worked as well as Jan Marini. synergy between our brands”, said Ford.

Ending months of speculation, G.H. Mumm, the fastest growing Champagne brand in Australia and the best selling Champagne in France, will be poured at bars and restaurants across Flemington.

According to Julien Marteau, Brand Manager for G.H. Mumm, the discerning, distinctive and stylish Champagne brand that is G.H. Mumm is looking to breathe new life into the Champagne market with a significant campaign during the Melbourne Cup Carnival through retail, restaurants, bars and key partners across the country where Champagne is part of the Carnival celebration.

Specifically, the agreement affords G.H. Mumm Australia-wide marketing rights as the official champagne of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Flemington, which will be the driving force behind an extensive on-premise and retail promotional program, the likes of which the G.H. Mumm brand has not seen before in Australia.

“The three-year sponsorship agreement will see G.H. Mumm place the Melbourne Cup Carnival at the heart of its marketing program. It will be supported by three G.H. Mumm branded bars and track signage at Flemington, as well as through advertising, heavy retail branding, and on-premise promotions”, said Julien Marteau.

Following an extensive evaluation process, the VRC selected G.H. Mumm as it’s exclusive champagne partner in a sponsorship agreement that will start on the 150th anniversary of the Carnival and will carry through for three years. Brendan Ford, General Manager Sponsorship and Corporate Hospitality for the VRC said that G.H. Mumm had enthusiastically embraced the new partnership.

The sponsorship agreement includes the pouring rights, branded bars and retail market position as the 86th official champagne of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Flemington. It will also provide G.H. Mumm with a presence in the Birdcage by way of a corporate marquee on all four race days as well as the naming rights to its own race on Crown Oaks Day: The G.H. Mumm.

“In celebrating the 150th Melbourne Cup, the VRC is excited to welcome G.H. Mumm as our new, exclusive champagne sponsor. G.H. What SpinWine does is aerate the wine during pouring, dissipating some of the tannins and chemicals left behind in the aging process. The interaction with air and a double helix spin process helps break these compounds up and structurally reforms the wine to bring both flavor and texture to its full potential. Designed and manufactured in Denmark the SpinWine unit is lightweight, made of polished steel and high-quality acrylic making it easy to take with you to any restaurant or party.
