Imad Syed / Profile I consider myself as an architect for the people. My design principles focus on the varied experiential aspects of architecture, and I place a great emphasis on the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of built environment. I’m a modern minimalist in my style of thought, and believe firmly in working with conceptual development of forms and spaces hand-in-hand at all times. I believe in the power of design to transform spaces, economies and experiences. Having designed a wide range of built forms right from concept designing on the drawing board to site supervision during construction, I produce drawings using an assortment of software in various combinations based on the scope / stage of a project, to bring out the most appropriate presentations.
This is a portfolio of a few of my selected works, I hope you enjoy browsing through it.

SANCTUM VALLEY / HOSPITALITY Nestled between the Malacca Strait and lush tropical greenery, this steeply sloped lot in Langkawi sets the stage for a picturesque luxury resort. The property is accessed from the highest point in the plot, which consists of the hotel lobby and a spa block. Hotel rooms are spread across three levels above the main floor, while the lower three levels include a restaurant block, floating chalets and a cascading water feature running along the entire periphery of the resort.

The sloped terrain was used to our advantage, as the massing followed the land profile so as to blend with the hills, and ensure minimal interference with the surroundings. Utmost care was taken to preserve the existing plantations, and further tropical landscaping was proposed along with natural and locally sourced material. Built into the terrain on the lower levels of the property are the private chalets. They float on a cascading water feature with an infinity edge, which creates an illusion of blending into the Strait of Malacca.

SERENITY / PRIVATE RESIDENCE Approached through a walkway of oversized steps wafting on a shallow pond, this 15,000 sq.ft. residence creates an illusion of ‘floating on water’. The first encounter in the triple-height entry foyer is a minimalist courtyard featuring a spectacular solitary olive tree, which segregates the formal living from the family zones. The living spaces and bedrooms face the lush backyard with seamless glazing, that springs to life with abundant landscaping, water features and shaded outdoor lounges. Ample diffused natural light, profuse waterbodies, terrace gardens on all levels, solar panels and rainwater harvesting ensure that this quintessential piece of Modernist Architecture is the pinnacle of contemporary green living. Construction is currently on-going and is set to complete by early 2021.
MEET ME HALFWAY / HOSPITALITY Designed to integrate two towers - a hotel block and the other featuring hotel apartments - on a single podium, this 29-storey structure covers an expanse of 415,000 sq.ft. Uniquely conceptualized, every floor gradually moves closer together from all directions, such that they merge at the recreation & clubhouse levels. This creates a carved out opening between the towers, as they lean onto one another along one axis. Framing the skyline with a bold statement, the ‘carving’ also facilitates for mid-level courtyards, gardens and cross-ventilation throughout. Along the other axis the towers create a whimsical rhythm, by complementing one another in a two-dimensional, double-helical pattern. Spectacular angles mirror the vertical concept of dramatization even in the horizontal facade elements. The design concept was to orchestrate the two towers into a sensation of harmony, while they slowly begin to diverge as they ascend.

FORM AND SPACE / PRIVATE RESIDENCE Assertively covering up a staggering 28,000 sq.ft. of built-up area, this residence is essentially an exposed concrete block, from which volumes have been carved out to create deep voids in the massing. The result is a bold, muscular structure that exudes raw power with impressive scale. While steep, imposing overhangs shade most of the outdoor decks, spaces and entryways, the seamless glass facade creates an otherwise breezy, open feeling. A formal guest block is segregated from the main villa by a shallow pond, while the basement houses a 6-car parking. The ground floor comprises of a formal living, dining zone, kitchen, office and a massive double-height living room, overlooked by a leisure lounge on the floor above. A generously sized living hall, open plan kitchen & four large bedroom suites constitute the first floor. The crown jewel of this residence is an exclusive master suite on the roof-top, with an enormous garden lounge offering panoramic views.
HOUSE OF ZEN / PRIVATE RESIDENCE Characterized by dramatic overhanging eaves, cascading horizontal lines and unrelenting integration with gardens, this residence is a contemporary juxtaposition of the Prairie School of Thought with Mid-century Modernism. Designed for a young family in Dubai, this 8,000 sq.ft. residence is planned around a Zen garden. One enters the residence through a porch under a spectacular cantilever into a luxurious, double-height foyer. The welcome experience is enhanced by the private Zen garden right opposite. The perimeter of the garden flanks the living spaces, and is made up of oversized, folding glass panels that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. In addition to a lavish master suite with sweeping terraces and a private roof garden, the first floor also comprises of 3 large bedroom suites. On the topmost level of the villa, an entertainment lounge with a leisure deck furnishes as the figurative ‘cherry on top’. Authority approvals are currently in progress, and construction is set to commence in the latter half of 2020.
MANSION OF MINIMALISM / PRIVATE RESIDENCE District One Lagoons, located in Mohammed Bin Rashid City represents an exclusive, elegant lifestyle community and is the pinnacle of luxury living at its finest. The proposed residential mansion directly overlooks the pristine turquoise waters of the world’s largest man-made lagoon. Covering a total built-up area of 28,000 sq.ft., this lavish residence exudes elegance with it’s artistic juxtaposition of timeless minimalism and dramatic scale. The entrance foyer is a massive double-height space, with an expansive skylight above ensuring natural lighting all day long. Located on this level are the formal guest spaces, two bedroom suites, and a mega-sized open plan living that overlooks the backyard and infinity pool through seamless glass panels. A seven-car parking area, gymnasium, home theater, spa lounge, entertainment hall and service block make up the basement level. On the first floor, there are two separate living spaces, four spacious bedroom suites and a lavish master suite with a direct view of the lagoons. All these spaces are complete with luxurious terraces and green spaces. The roof-top deck is an additional delight as it provides a pano view of the entire development. To ensure an unparalleled living experience, no compromise will be made in the quality of finishing, material selection, workmanship & spatial organization. As of May 2020, the project is currently in the process of authority submission drawings.
UBERBLOCK TRICITY / MASTER PLANNING 100 hectares of land was proposed to be developed into a tricity. Located at the South-Eastern periphery of New Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the brief was to develop three cities: Ethnic City, which mirrors and preserves the historic fabric of Uzbek art and achitecture; Diplomatic City, to serve as the commercial capital, while Cinematic City is to serve as a futuristic technological city with production studios, performing arts theaters and film institutes. Faced with the challenge of encouraging economic and population growth while preserving the City’s unique historic character, the urban design strategy intends to enhance and better connect those features of the city that set it apart - Compact grid patterns, pedestrian friendly networks, intuitive wayfinding, preserved historic fabric, self-sufficient use of resources, energy from renewable sources in situ, reducing the demand for drinking water & taking advantage of grey and rainwater.
With abstract formation of squares inspired from Islamic art patterns by repetition of units, the 400m x 400m superblock grid is juxtaposed with the traditional Islamic patterns to achieve our conceptual derivation. ETHNIC CITY DIPLOMATIC CITY CINEMATIC CITY
THE UNION SQUARE / CONCEPT DERIVATION The Union Bridge is an imposing suspended structure perched symbolically right in the center of the three cities as if to tether them together. Situated at the main junction, it serves as a pedestrian crossing at the crossroad.
Inspiration from Islamic art patterns of repetitive square units.
Isolating one grid from the pattern.
Derivative design - 4 ramped legs forming entry & exit points between interlinked cities.
Site division into superblock units, seperated by main and arterial roads, with formation of junctions.

The Diplomatic City is flanked by arterial roads on it periphery and has two sub arterial roads. One serves as the street for carnival procession while the other is the street of love, peace and happiness. The central square of this zone is surrounded by cultural centers of various countries that have strong relations with Uzbekistan. It also serves as platform for entertainment. The museum of traditional arts, sports center, cinema complex & educational hub are buffered away from the city center. The hospitality stretch encompasses a series of tall striking buildings that define the skyline of the city. On its East lies a long stretch of stepped gardens which blends beautifully into the retail zone. It allows users to experience the marvels of literature and poetry native to Uzbekistan in the garden of poets and lovers. This garden creates a fusion of retail and recreational spaces, with their open air cafes strategically located in various parts of the garden.

One enters the Ethnic City to a spectacular replica of Bukhara’s 5th century Ark, which historically served as a fortress for the royal city within its walls. A retail structure enfolds the Ark, defining the main square. It opens up into enormous royal gardens, spread across the central region of the city. The gardens are inspired from the Charbagh, representing the four gardens of paradise. These gardens focus on water and irrigation. The lost glory of Amir Temur’s Ak-Saray is recreated as a museum hotel, while Samarkand’s Registan Square has been replicated with its 3 iconic structures, and serves as royal hotels. The retail sectors stretch along the silk route; these arcaded structures comprise of a series of artesian workshops and Chai-khanas. Ethnic museum courtyards are dedicated to the historical achievers of Uzbekistan, showcasing their work. A series of boutique hotels flank the edge of the city, in contribution the skyline of the development. The Silk Route retail stretch

The Cinematic City’s central park is flanked by an arena for concerts and film festivals. An iconic kaleidoscope tower adorns the plaza, embedded with screens synced together to showcase a beautiful play of patterns inspired from their rich heritage. Retail buildings surround the arena. The Film City is separated by an arterial road and only caters to a certain set of users. The entrance is marked by a Film Academy, around which the performing theatre & production studios are designed to support its functions. A green buffer zone segregates the medical center, residential district and schools. They have been planned at the eastern part of the city, to facilitate faster access from the entrances to the city. In the overall planning, urban acoustics have been considered to establish a comfortable built environment. Fire stations and surveillance have been strategically located, such that they are easily accessible in times of emergency. Performing Theatre

CASA ARABICA / PRIVATE RESIDENCE On a spacious symmetric plot in a serene location, the client requirement was to build a modest home of not more than 6000 sq.ft. Surrounded by neighbouring residences on all sides meant there were no scenic views from the backyard. Taking this into consideration, the residence and landscape were planned with ample frontyard lawns and lush gardens. A contemporary-arabic architectural depiction, the sand-beige textured palette is accented by facade-lighting grooves, wood composite cladding and a laser-cut screen with abstract, geometric patterns. Deliberated in a manner such that the residence feels much larger than its actual square footage, the family living is a double height space that features an artsy minimalist, linear stairway. This leads to a corridor in the first floor, which connects to the master suite and three additional bedrooms. The ground floor also consists of a guest bedroom and a formal guest living. Construction for this residence has been scheduled to commence in the last leg of 2020.
ORIGAMI / COMMERCIAL BUILDING Inspired by the paper-folding Japanese technique of Origami, this shopping mall designed for Meydan Group spans 102,000 sq.ft. of built-up area, spread across four levels and two basements. Sitting on a corner plot of 30,000 s.ft., the main entrance to the ground floor level opens up to the egress zone with escalators on either sides of a triple volume lobby. This zone leads to an information desk floating on a water feature and an anchor store of 15,000 sq.ft., while the periphery is lined by FnB outlets, public spaces and coffee shops. The first floor consists of retail shops arranged around a massive, glass cube containing a hanging garden open to sky. On the second floor, one will find the prayer rooms, kids’ play areas and restaurants, with the food court arranged around the glass cube. The building also comprises of offices on the third level, which are accessed from the ground level separately. These offices enjoy exclusive admission to a roof-top lounge and garden. Two levels of basement provide 95 parking spots, and the total saleable area of the shopping mall stands at a staggering 75%. The project proposal is currently under client review as of May 2020. H

SEASIDE HAVEN / PRIVATE RESIDENCE Perched upon the magnificent shores of Palm Jumeirah, this sculptural beach house was conceptualized in a rather unusual manner to fulfill the requirements of the client brief. In order to maximize utility of the plot without compromising the open spaces, this floor plan was sheared from the middle and pivoted such that it spans diagonally. One enters into a triple height foyer crowned by a staggering skylight, with family and formal zones on either flank. While all 12 bedrooms spread across the upper levels enjoy premium beach views, the living spaces open up to multi-level terraces and gardens facing the frontyard. The facade consists of a minimal palette of finishes, and the outer skin organically wraps the residence with a ribbon-like seamlessness. With 22,000 sq.ft. of built-up area spread across 3 levels, this B+G+2 holiday beach house has obtained authority approvals as of May 2020.

MOTHER OF PEARL / PRIVATE RESIDENCE An unassuming facade with clean elevation lines and rustic stone accents encompasses a luxury residential villa of 17500 sq.ft. The entry foyer overlooks a courtyard and is flanked by the guest quarters and formal areas. This leads to a splendid double-volume family living, which flows into the pool deck via seamless glass panels. The egress zones are segregated from the main spaces to ensure privacy for the family. All the zones in the basement are lit and ventilated naturally, thanks to the courtyard. The first floor houses a spacious master suite complete with an office space, outdoor areas and a lavish ensuite. Additionally, there are five more bedroom suites on this floor, with a leisure room and roof garden on the level above. Currently under construction, completion and handover of the villa is scheduled for the last quarter of 2020.
