Zoe Young Zoe Young (b.1978) is a rising talent within the Sydney art scene. Zoe graduated from the National Art School (Sydney). She is currently based in Bowral (Southern Highlands, NSW) with her husband and two young children. Zoe’s paintings are marked by her eclectic use of colour and sharp eye for unique landscape and still-life compositions. Zoe’s childhood included “growing up in Bowral in spring, Thredbo in winter and at the beach in Sydney in summer”. Having graduated in sculpture at the National Art School, she is self-taught in painting; her passion and skill for still life, capturing characters in portraiture and translating the landscape in painting is evidently unique and of her own voice. Through her use of pastel tones and dramatic shadow, her still life compositions reflect an emotive response to the environment in which she practices. Zoe’s work is a truly authentic representation of the Australian aesthetic; within her paintings you will find subtle nod to her Australian heritage through understated motifs. As a modern reinterpretation of the traditional still life, her subject matter reveals moments ADVERTORIAL

of simple pleasures – inspired through her experience of motherhood and living in the Southern Highlands. Zoe’s perspective on her art making process – “It’s like a muscle, you have to keep your hand and eye co-ordination fit. There are tips and tricks to make it easier, but you know when you’re hitting it and when you’re not.” Zoe is a seasoned finalist in the Archibald Portraiture Prize, selected in 2014 with her portrait of Olympic Snowboarder Torah Bright and again in 2016 with her portrait of Indigenous Australian model Sam Harris. Within her portraiture and still life works, Zoe has truly excelled and established herself as one of the forefront painters within a new generation of Australian artists. As one of Australia’s rising talents, Zoe received the 2013 John Briscoe Memorial Prize judged by Lucy Culliton and runner up of the 2014 Yen Young Female Artist of the Year Award with her portrait of Winter Olympian Frank Prihoda. In one of Zoe’s landmark exhibitions, ‘Home’ (2015) at The Art Society, Southern Highlands Zoe’s body of work reflected her childhood of seasonal changes – Bowral in spring, Thredbo in winter and summer in Sydney. In the last stages of pregnancy at the time of this exhibition, Zoe’s art making methods had ‘turned her eye to the more natural and slower things in life.’ Most recently, Zoe has been exploring landscape and still-life inspired by her surroundings in the Southern Highlands. Zoe’s ‘Salt Life’ collection of paintings was featured at Phuket’s Baan Kata Arts Fest in January at Mom Tri’s Villa Royale, and will be exhibited there until 30 April. Phuket is a melting pot of cultures. The island is inhabited by a mix of Thai Buddhists and Muslims, and over half of the locals are a mix of Chinese. This makes for an interesting combination when it comes to food choices on the island, and breakfast options are no exception. The most popular local breakfasts in Phuket draw on the cultural mix of the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s residents. Breakfast featuring traditional Chinese steamed buns and those with Muslim origins are quite different to the fried eggs and bacon combination that most Westerners have grown accustomed to. Many locals and expats prefer to have their roti served with moderately spiced curries and fresh vegetables. This combination is easy to find at many local restaurants, but take note that most restaurants selling this delicious breakfast sell out quite early in the morning.

Another roti favourite is known as Roti Mataba. Stuffed with minced chicken or beef, cumin and shallots, Roti Mataba makes for a savoury breakfast. Tea and coffee aficionados will be pleased to know that it is quite easy to find coffee and tea on every street corner of Phuket. The richly flavoured Thai Iced Tea is creamy and sweet and very addictive, while the Oliang (Thai Iced Coffee) varieties are strong and feature heavy cream. A quick breakfast snack comes in the form of fried bread, resembling a donut. Thai-Chinese in origin, Pa Thong Ko is a chewy treat often served with coconut custard. Wicky Sundram steering a new course at Boat Lagoon

t ‘s entirely typical of the man that Wicky Sundram not only agrees to meet at short notice, but also takes the trouble to ensure this interviewer arrives at the right place. Not easy; Phuket Boat Lagoon is vast, a complex of 104 acres comprising condominiums, apartments, boat-handling facilities, stand-alone bungalows, shops, and restaurants – all cheek by jowl with the largest marina in Phuket, which offers mooring and dry docking facilities for every conceivable kind of sea-going craft. To oversee it all must be a daunting task, but to Wicky, Executive Director for the past nine months, it’s a “challenge” which he embraces and enjoys. What makes it even more of a test is that last year a massive redevelopment was initiated with the ultimate aim of creating what Wicky calls a ‘township’ – an exemplar of a model marine village. He sees his exacting role as expanding the branding, commercial, and marketing side of the group’s marina and hospitality business. Wicky’s route to the top has been an unconventional one. Unquestionably, his wide-ranging career path has stood him in good stead. After completing a diploma in accountancy in 1985, he eschewed a conventional post in banking. Instead, he became involved in Kuala Lumpur’s entertainment business, graduating to the responsibility of running night clubs as well as organizing live gigs and concerts. By 1996, and already with a wealth of experience behind him, Wicky became general manager of TGI Fridays, an American-owned restaurant chain.

What makes it even more of a test is that last year a massive redevelopment was initiated with the ultimate aim of creating what Wicky calls a‘township’ – an exemplar of a model marine village. Subsequently invited to manage the Langkawi Yacht Club on a six-month contract, Wicky eventually stayed for 17 years. During that period, he played a pivotal role in redeveloping the club, transforming it into one of the leading marinas and resorts in Malaysia. The number of berths was hugely increased and the prestigious title of Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) awarded to the operation. Wicky was also heavily involved with the development and organization of the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, a prestigious event held annually ever since its inception in 2003. One of his major coups was to persuade the Malaysian Prime Minister to approve a grant whereby the complex was upgraded to international marina status, with moorings for 250 boats. A ‘Marina of the East’ was born. And as if that was not enough, Wicky even found time to study for and complete an MBA from the University of Southern Queensland in strategic marketing, despite the fact that he possessed no first degree; and all at the age of 45.

Wicky’s massive contribution to Malaysian culture has, quite properly, been recognised at national level. On 21st of January, 2016, he was awarded the Exalted Order of the Crown of Kedah, a rare award bestowed in recognition of his input both to RLYC and the economy of the country. So what impelled Wicky to move, lock, stock and barrel – and at a time when many are contemplating retirement – to Phuket? A mix of motives. Having been associated with the RLYC for 17 years, Wicky felt that he had taken the project as far as he could. In his own words, he thought he was “going to be bored”, so he handed in his notice and looked for a new challenge. He also wanted more time with his family. An onerous schedule had meant he had seen all too little of his young son, Dhanesh and his wife, Jeniffer. As Wicky sagely observes, “When the family is in order, everything else works”. The new beginning came almost immediately, with the offer of a position as Executive Director at Phuket Boat Lagoon. The decision to come here was a no-brainer. New challenges awaited, and taking the plunge by moving to Phuket meant that the family could live under one roof. The educational opportunities for Dhanesh were enhanced, especially in a learning environment where English was the preferred language. He is currently studying in grade 10 at Headstart International School.

Quick to sing their praises, he describes the owners as “very people-orientated” and his fellow workers as “a great team”… and that from a leader who is a fourth-generation Malaysian whose ancestors hail from Kerala in southern India. In fact Wicky’s native tongue is Tamil, though his English is so fluent that you would scarcely guess that it is his second language. He jokes - frequently - in English, and is never lost for a word. As for his good relations with staff and owners, it’s no accident: he’s always made a point of learning about and respecting local culture. Nine months on, Wicky is happy in Phuket. While he worries about the mayhem on the roads, especially with a son of 17, he sees a bright future for the island. ROYAL LANGKAWI YACHT CLUB’S 15TH REGATTA: A SAILING SUCCESS!

ADVERTORIAL In the four racing days of the 15th Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2017 the Racing, IRC1, IRC2 and Sportsboats classes competed in seven races for each category. The Multihulls raced six times, the Club Cruisers five times and the Ocean Rovers and White Sails had four races. “We had more races than we thought at the beginning of the week,” noted Simon James (Principal Race Officer), with those early races ultimately ensuring sufficient race numbers for the regatta. “So, the sailors are happy and that is the important thing. Besides, the facilities in the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club are fantastic, we can sail out of the marina which makes the logistics very easy. And we had a really great management team”. THA 72’s first time at the RLIR was rewarded with the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy for the Racing class, winning every single race during this regatta. Emagine came in second and Black Baza, another newcomer to the RLIR took third place. Mata Hari KL Registry racing this year in the IRC1 class came first, taking the LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy over Insanity and PhPlus. The IRC-2 Challenge Trophy was claimed by Phoenix. Old Pulteney Blue Angel settled for second place ahead of Sailescapes Fargo Ladies. The teams in the Sportsboats class took turns for line honours throughout the week, but the RSYC Team finally won the Langkawi Sports Trophy for this class. Tantrum Too outclassed Fetz Ma and Mojo, winning all six races in the Multihull class, taking home the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup.

James Bond Island Perhaps the most famous island in Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island is effectively two towering limestone karsts known as Koh Khao Ping Ghan and Koh Tapu in Thai. James Bond Island gained its name, and subsequent popularity, after being featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun in the early 1970s. James Bond Island is one of the must-see destinations for those visiting southern Thailand. James Bond Island itself is a nature lovers’ dream. The Island is covered in lush, verdant vegetation and it’s interesting to note that succulents and cactus varieties actually grow out of the limestone. A steep pathway has been cleared through the centre of the island, making exploration easier. The pathway also gives way to some spectacular peekaboo views of Phang Nga Bay. There’s a small summit halfway up, which is wonderful for photographs. This area tends to get crowded with visitors, so it’s best to practice patience if you want to capture a decent digital image.

Located in between Phuket Island and the Thai mainland, Phang Nga Bay is a stunning bay featuring magnificent limestone karsts rising vertically out of the bay’s waters. A popular day trip from Phuket, Phang Nga Bay has much to offer with regards to sightseeing opportunities and off-the-beaten track adventures.

Although James Bond Island is quite small, there are lots of things to see and explore. The limestone karsts are filled with nooks and crannies to crawl into and take photographs from. However, do exercise caution and be careful as the morning mist can cause the limestone karsts to become very slippery. Local vendors have set up selling the usual fare on the island’s east coast, where people admire the unusual shape of Koh Tapu (‘Nail Island’). There are very basic restroom facilities and the vendors do sell water and

other refreshments. Arriving early to mid-morning at James Bond Island is best, as it tends to become quite crowded and overrun with day-trippers in the afternoon. A popular activity on the way to James Bond Island is stopping to sea kayak through the various limestone karsts and caves that dot Phang Nga Bay. While this is generally included in any package tour to James Bond Island, it’s also possible to sea kayak on a solo tour of the bay. Simply speak with the long-tail boat driver, and he will be able to help arrange this activity.

The boats drop tourists off to dine on fresh seafood at the restaurants closest to the main pier, while locals board long-tail boats and go about their daily lives. It’s an interesting scene that further enhances the charm of Koh Panyi. Do make it a point to stop here while exploring Phang Nga Bay as the village is really interesting and gives an authentic taste of life in Thailand.

Samet Nangshe has risen in popularity on social media. It’s currently one of the most visited locations outside of Phuket.

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint Showcasing breathtaking views across Phang Nga Bay, Samet Nangshe is a local viewpoint that has gone from being an unknown hilltop to one of the most popular tourist attractions, centred in the tiny village of Tha Yu, tambon Khlong Kien, in Phang Nga province. ‘Discovered’ by a Thai photographer, Samet Nangshe has risen in popularity on social media and is currently one of the most visited locations outside of Phuket. The views from atop Samet Nanghse are outstanding, while the location is filled with unique photo opportunities. Samet Nangshe consists of two viewpoints – a lower viewpoint and a higher one. Each offers spectacular views of Phang Nga Bay and the towering limestone karsts that jut out from the water. Although the viewpoint is stunning at most times of the day, it’s particularly beautiful at sunrise. If you’re interested in sleeping atop Samet Nangshe, you can rent a tent for approximately 150 baht. There is an entry fee to ascend the hill to the top of the viewpoint. Parking is available, and the family of the land owner sells some local snacks and refreshments at the bottom of the pathway.

Getting There A wide variety of Phuket tour operators have daily tours to Phang Nga Bay. However, if you’re looking for more of a slow-moving local adventure, it’s highly recommended to make your own way to Phang Nga Bay.

Drive yourself, stop off on the way to buy fresh fruit from a roadside stall, and once you’re in Phang Nga, negotiate a day rate with a long-tail boat driver who’ll be happy to ferry you to both James Bond Island and Koh Panyi. Yaowarat Road Chinese heart of the capital It’s not just during the Chinese New Year celebrations that Bangkok’s Yaowarat Road comes alive; this landmark street is also an important trading and living area for Thais of Chinese descent. Window on Phuket takes readers for a look at life on both sides of this road and learns that, even when the spectacular New Year celebrations are over, there is still plenty to see and experience.

Odeon Roundabout: This used to be an empty patch of land next to the Odeon Cinema, but in 1958 the Prime Minister, Field Marshall Sarit Dhanarajata ordered the construction of a roundabout with a fountain in the middle. The structure was demolished in 1998 because the area around it had become a squatter community and people were using the fountain for bathing and washing. In its place was built an archway, called China Gate, that has been praised for its design and which many believe has improved the feng shui of Yaowarat Road. There’s another local belief that money will flow to you if you stand next to the brass plate with the Chinese character ti (land), look up at the character tian (heaven) and hit your

wallet three times against the white stone depiction of mountains and dragons. Wat Traimitr: Walking away from Hualamphong, the temple is just before the Odeon roundabout. The highlight of this temple is the beautiful golden Buddha. Locals claim that there’s a huge amount of pure gold in the Buddha and that it’s the largest such Buddha in the world. Mae Kuan Im Shrine: This is the base of the first rescue foundation in Thailand, the Thian Fah Foundation. Inside is a wooden carving of the goddess Kuan Im, believed to have been made in China at the time of the Song Dynasty. It was brought to Thailand in 1958.

Wat Leng Noi Yi: This temple has the Thai name Wat Mangkon Kamalawas and is almost always full of candle smoke and the smell of burning incense, as both ethnic Thai and Chinese like to come and pray to the god Tai Suay Ea who, it’s believed, can bring luck. This temple is on the Charoen Krung Road side of Yaowarat. Turn off Yaowarat Road into Trok Mangkon and walk for about 50 metres, then turn right and you’ll see the temple.

Gold: Yaowarat is Thailand’s biggest gold trading centre, with more than 100 gold shops on a 1.5km stretch of the road. Apart from gold shops, there are also many stalls selling Chinese herbs, and both sides of the road are packed with shops selling Chinese music, books and magazines. There are also street-side stalls selling amulets and lucky decorations – both Thai and Chinese – to bring good fortune into the buyer’s home.

Fashion: Just off Yaowarat is Sampeng, a wholesale centre that people say is the heart of the fashion industry in Thailand. Sampeng is a narrow little alley but is so long that you may collapse of exhaustion before you reach the end of the street, especially at weekends when it’s jam-packed with people. However, the rewards for your efforts are the sometimes unbelievably low prices for decorations, gifts, clothes, shoes and watches.

Great food: Yaowarat is bustling all day long as the street is full of traders occupying almost every conceivable space. All these people need to eat, so there are snacks and full meals available all the way along the road. Noodles, rice dumplings and dim sum are all for sale along the busy pavements. There are also mobile trolleys with fried, grilled and barbecued goodies to choose from. Chinese chestnuts, desserts and strange hard-to-find Chinese fruits can be found on Yaowarat Road. For those who are not so keen on street food, there are plenty of upscale Chinese restaurants such as the Chiang Karela Chinese Restaurant near the Grand China Hotel junction or the Scala near the Chalerm Buri intersection.

How to get there: Yaowarat Road is best reached by public transport. Take the subway to Hualamphong station and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an easy 15-minute stroll from there. The street is also served by many public buses, but unless you are familiar with the bus system, taking a taxi or tuk-tuk is probably easier. You can also take a boat, getting off at Tha Ratchawong pier. From there walk through Sampeng to Yaowarat Road.

LEGAL MATTERS.A SIGN OF ECONOMIC LIBERALISATION IN THAILAND?

A sign of economic liberalisation in Thailand? Thailand has always witnessed foreign participation in various industries in the country. However, interested foreign nationals are limited, with few exceptions and without an investment license, to a 49 percent shareholding as per the general rules according to the Foreign Business Act of Thailand. Although the 49 percent foreign shareholding threshold was imposed with the intention of protecting Thai companies from being completely run by foreign persons or foreign entities, it can be difficult for investors and shareholders to effectively engage in their particular line of business without a majority deciding power. Therefore, foreign investors often are forced to accept implementing voting mechanisms into Thai companies’ corporate governance, so as to maintain control over decision-making, or alternatively they may seek to obtain a foreign business license – often a lengthy process. From an economic policy perspective, it would seem prudent for Thailand to consider liberalising foreign investment in certain industries in order to encourage an influx of foreign capital investment and expertise. One such industry that appears to be liberalising is the insurance industry in Thailand which, until recently, restricted foreign investment substantially to the ‘standard rules.’ The Thai insurance industry has seen significant excitement from foreign participants recently. On 18 January 2017, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) issued two notifications to the public to liberalise restrictions on the participation and ownership of foreign entities in Thai insurance companies, with immediate effect.

The notifications allow foreigners to directly hold more than 49 percent of the voting shares in a Thai insurance company. Additionally, foreign directors may comprise more than half of the directors of an insurance company’s board. Since its last shift in 2015, when the MOF increased the threshold for foreign participation in insurance companies from 25 percent to 49 percent, this latest shift is expected to further ensure the transparency of the insurance system in Thailand and strengthen the stability of the insurance company and the overall business sector. However, in order for a Thai insurance company to meet the conditions, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) must be satisfied that it has: i. sufficient Capital Adequacy Ratio meeting the OIC specification; and ii. a business plan that improves the efficiency and stability for insurance companies or the overall insurance industry. Another factor that will be considered is the financially strong foreign contender, who exhibits at least 10 years of experience and expertise in the insurance business, thus having the ability to provide significant financial support to the Thai insurance company.

The increased shareholding threshold for foreign shareholders marks a step that aids foreign participation and the Thai insurance industry as a whole. Being able to legally have majority voting shares, will naturally translate to improved control and management for the foreign investor. Allowing a direct majority foreign shareholding may also curtail the practice of using holding companies, or looking for alternative ways to ‘effectively’ acquire more than 49 percent shareholding. This may align with the MOF’s objective to prevent and defuse any form of establishment of nominees, thereby further increasing the transparency of the insurance system. The 2017 revision represents a step forward for the Thai insurance industry, whilst at the same time opening its economy to foreign investment. If it proves beneficial for both foreign participants and Thai insurance companies in the long run, we may be able to witness the increase of voting shares for foreign participants in other business sectors in Thailand. So, the real question is whether this liberalisation is an isolated case, or the beginning of a new trend that may be extended to other industries?

s this island is a magnet for tourism, trade and investment, the application of the law and the legal process in Phuket are always a hot topic, for foreign nationals as well as Thais.

Given the multinational and multicultural nature of Phuket’s population, not to mention the vast range of first languages and the wide disparity of income levels, it is indeed fortunate that the legal system here is based on international standards. Everybody should be able to have confidence that they will be treated fairly by, and be protected by, the relevant branch of the Phuket courts – whether civil, commercial or criminal. Looking at the criminal justice system in Phuket, it may surprise foreign nationals to learn that anyone can go to the police and make an accusation that a crime has

been committed against them. Once the police have accepted and documented the accusation, they are obliged to investigate / collect evidence and submit the case to the public prosecutor. Perhaps even more surprising, the injured party has the right to gather all the evidence themselves and take their case direct to the court, bypassing the police and the public prosecutor. In both cases, the public prosecutor and the injured party will assess the evidence and decide whether to go ahead with a criminal prosecution. When it comes to criminal offences such as cheating, fraud or criminal misappropriation, the prosecutor many recommend that the accuser and accused meet to try and reach a compromise before trial. Even once a trial has commenced, the judge may – having listened to some of the evidence – try to get the parties to agree to a compromise to save everyone time. Assuming a prosecution is on the cards, and depending on the circumstances, the accused may remain free during this process, attending the public prosecutor’s office as required to progress the case. However, once a court date is set for the first hearing, the accused must present him or herself to the police and be taken to court in their custody, where they will be placed in a holding cell beneath the court while they wait to be called to hear the case against them.

In an alternative scenario, where the accused has been arrested by the police, he or she may be locked up in police cells until the trial begins, or may be released on police bail. Once brought before the court, and if the case is adjourned to a subsequent hearing, the accused may apply for bail and, if it is granted, go about his or her life in the usual way, attending court when required. If, however, the accused is a foreign national, it is likely that his or her passport will have been confiscated pending the outcome of the trial. Note that, following the end of the first day’s court proceedings, and while waiting for bail to be processed and paid, the accused may ‘enjoy’ another few hours’ stay in the cells beneath the courthouse – something that can be avoided if you retain a lawyer who is familiar with the system and knows how to organise these things. As is the case in most criminal legal systems, the burden of proof rests with the prosecution – but do not expect a trial by jury; this does not exist in Thailand, where you’ll find yourself facing a single judge who may directly participate in questioning witnesses. It is worth noting that, should an individual’s criminal allegations prove to be false and malicious in their intent, the accuser may find him or herself facing a penalty for bringing a false action. Criminal court proceedings in Phuket will usually take no more than one year. Persons convicted of a criminal offence may appeal to the Appeal Court and ultimately to the Supreme Court; judgement in both these courts should take no more than six months and bail maybe applied for pending the outcome of these procedures.

Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts for between three and ten days, depending on where you’re resident (only three days in Phuket). For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cool off at what is usually the hottest time of the year. However, there’s a deeper significance to Songkran which is rooted in Thai history and beliefs. Here’s a bit of background information; perhaps it will enhance your enjoyment of the event. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit ‘Sangkranti’, which means ‘to move upwards’ or ‘to be about to change’. On the eve of the festival, Thais spring clean their homes, symbolically expelling any bad luck from the old year and prepare for good fortune in the new. Food and other contributions are offered to the monks at the temple early on the morning of the 13th, after which there are ceremonial prayers. Water is also poured on the ground, or on the roots of an ancient tree, symbolising a blessing to ancestors.

Forget about getting anywhere on these days without getting soaked, especially if you’re on a motorbike.

Thais who have moved from their home towns always try to return to their families for Songkran and all forms of transport are booked solid. For this reason you should try to avoid travelling before, during or immediately after the holiday, particularly by bus or train. In many towns and villages, a Buddha image is carried in a procession through the streets and people sprinkle water upon it, to show their respect. In the southern provinces, village elders are invited to the temple and young people splash water on their heads, signaling their blessings for good health and long life. The elders respond by wishing the young vigour, wealth and happiness. In another delightful custom, Thais visit their elderly relatives bringing them new clothes for the coming year.

Increasingly, though, urban Thais have come to celebrate the holiday in a frenzy of water-throwing. Nobody is immune. One of my fondest memories of Songkran is of an immaculately uniformed policeman (theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re normally very big on dignity) smiling good-naturedly as he emptied water from his highly polished boots. Unfortunately these high jinks can sometimes get out of hand. Motorised gangs with high pressure water cannons, iced water and lots of enthusiasm, get each other (and anybody else) wet, in running battles through the streets. But speeding traffic, wet roads and alcoholic bravado make for a dangerous cocktail. In the recent past, the holidays have been marred by tragic loss of life and injury so, inevitably, the authorities have moved in to safeguard life and limb. Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s New Year celebration is a wet and wild event throughout the country, but the Phuket version is rnational, and perhaps the most the most international, boisterous, of all. Tourists, expats and Thais alike es to the teeth with water guns, arm themselves powder and buckets and let loose for three days of heavy dousing (and, it must be said,

some heavy drinking too). Water battles take place along all the main roads throughout the island, and pick-up trucks turn into roving water-war vehicles overloaded with people who splash everyone they pass by as they cruise the soggy streets. Patong is host to the most frenzied Songkran celebrations, while Phuket City comes in at a close second. In addition to days of street parties, there are a number of traditional activities to join as well. At the time of writing the full schedule of events had not yet been finalised, but probable activities include a meritmaking ceremony at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket City on the morning of April 13 and festivities at Saphan Hin Park on each day of Songkran from 9am to 6pm. More sacred aspects of the festival that can be seen around the island include processions of Buddha images and ceremonies to pay homage to elders with scented lustral water. Forget about getting anywhere on these days without getting soaked, especially if you’re on a motorbike. And no one’s immune to a drenching, not even officials on duty. There really is no way of avoiding a soaking, unless you stay in your hotel. Our advice is, ‘If you can’t beat them, join them.’ But don’t forget to put wallets, mobile 'phones, cigarettes, lighters etc in a watertight plastic bag.

Whether you confine yourself to a walk along the beach or engage in swimming, snorkelling and scuba-diving, there’s no doubt that marine-related activities are one of the prime attractions for visitors to Phuket. The aquarium, which is also a marine life research centre, is located right on the tip of Cape Panwa and is a 13-kilometre drive from Phuket City. A hundred years ago, Phuket was a prosperous tin mining town, and was an international centre with a large community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations stretching back from the road. The beautifully furnished interiors often included walled gardens and Chinese inspired decorations. Explore Rommanee, Talang, Yaowarat and Dibuk Roads where the buildings have been lovingly restored to their former glory and now feature antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.

This hill towers over Phuket City and is easily spotted as it’s topped with wireless masts. The narrow approach road allows views of Phuket’s eastern beaches and at the top, there’s a jogging track. This is a favourite place for locals who come here to exercise or just to chill out. There are no specific facilities, but the Khao To Sae shrine makes a pleasant interlude. Don’t forget to bring a bag of peanuts to feed the monkeys, but watch out! Don’t get too close. The monkeys are wild.

Wat Phra Tong

Wat Phra Tong is also a popular attraction for both visitors and local residents. Phra Tong means “Golden Buddha”. One attraction is that the upper half of the golden Buddha image appears to sprout up from the ground. The image is known as “Phra Phut”. The temple also houses Wat Phra Tong Museum, which has a collection of ancient artifacts from Phuket locals. The temple is located on Thepkrasattri Road, 20 kilometres from Phuket City.

Phuket can’t compete with Niagara or Victoria when it comes to waterfalls. However, we do have several picturesque cascades, and during the southwest monsoon a large volume of rain is deposited on the hills, so the run-off can produce some spectacular volumes over the waterfalls. One near to the main resorts is Kathu Waterfall, which has a shaded walk through the jungle above the falls. The only sounds to disturb the serenity are the wild bird calls and the sibilance of the rushing waters. At the foot of the cascade is a small restaurant - a favourite meeting place for Thai families on the weekend.

Explore the island If you have the time and inclination, why not rent a motorcycle or car and explore Phuket independently? ADVERTORIAL PHUKET, Thailand – More than 6,000 athletes from around the world are heading to Phuket this June to “Run Paradise” at the 2017 Laguna Phuket Marathon. Having put Phuket on the map as a world-class sports tourism destination, the Laguna Phuket Marathon has grown to become the leading destination marathon in South East Asia and will take place on 3rd and 4th June 2017, hosted by the multi award-winning integrated destination resort Laguna Phuket. With a reputation that spans the globe, the Laguna Phuket Marathon attracts runners from more than 40 countries and has become the “must run” destination marathon in the region.

“2017 will be the 12th edition of the Laguna Phuket Marathon and it continues to go from strength-tostrength. The beautiful course, beachfront location of Laguna Phuket and its onsite resorts and facilities appeals to a diverse demographic – from families and first-timers to experienced runners,” said Mr. Roman Floesser, General Manager of the event’s organiser, Go Adventure Asia. The Laguna Phuket Marathon offers five distances: The 2km Kids Run, 5km Run and 10.5km Run take place on Saturday 3rd June in the afternoon while the Half Marathon (21.097km) and Marathon (42.195km) take place Sunday 4th in the morning. “This sunset to sunrise concept of splitting the distances over two days was introduced last year, and was well received. It allows us to accept more runners and provide a safe and enjoyable race experience for all participants,” added Floesser. Sanctioned by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, Laguna Phuket Marathon is organised by leading sports management company Go Adventure Asia with professional timing and results by Sportstats Asia, ensuring the highest of international standards.
