Pandora’s B o x A Visual Arts Collaboration
Background Story In Greek mythology, the first thing that existed in the universe was chaos. Chaos gave birth to Gaia (also known as Mother Earth). Gaia bore 12 rulers of the Earth who were known as Titans. Prometheus (clever & wise) and Epimetheus (foolish) were two of these Titans. Zeus was the most powerful God in the universe and the son of a Titan named Chronos. He had a very poor opinion of mankind and could be jealous, petty, and cruel. Zeus, upset with Prometheus for stealing fire from Mt. Olympus and giving it to the humans, decides to seek revenge by introducing terrible misfortunes (sickness, envy, greed, old age, famine, war, lies, fear, disease, death, sorrow, etc). He orders Pandora to be created and gives her as a gift to Epimetheus, (the brother of Prometheus). Pandora is told to never open the box, but the gods and goddesses have also made her curious. She eventually opens the box unleashing a swarm of black-winged creatures into the air. She realizes what she has done, but cannot close the lid back fast enough. The only thing left in the box is HOPE. Pandora understands the importance of keeping this sealed inside so humans will never lose it in light of all the terrible things that have been released into the world.

A long time ago there were two brothers named Prometheus and Epimetheus. They had a nephew whose name was Zeus.

Prometheus thought he was smart by stealing fire from the Gods and was sent away as punishment.
5
This made Epimetheus terribly sad.

7
Zeus felt sorry for the uncle who lost his brother, so he had a companion sculpted for him.
9
Once the women was sculpted, Zeus had the goddess Athena breathe life into her.
10
The companion received many different gifts from all of the gods and goddesses around. They named the woman pandora, which means “all gifts.”
13
As soon as Pandora and Epimitheus met, they fell in love and soon got married.

16
One day, Pandora came across a box. When she asked what it was, Epimietheus shouted, “DO NOT EVER TOUCH THIS BOX!”
17
Pandora wondered why.
18
While Epimetheus was out, Pandora was sweeping the house. When she got close to the box, she slowly swept around it being careful not to disturb the box itself.
21
The box called out to her and said, “Pandora, help us, we are trapped in here and can’t get out, you must help us!”
22
Pandora tried to resist but felt sorry, so she opened the lid just a little.

As soon as she did this, out flew four dark gifts that the world did not deserve. They were...

When Epimetheus got home, he rushed to help his wife who was still frightened and badly hurt.

The box spoke again! It said, “I’m sti! in here.”
