FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to Images first issue of 2020, the Blue issue... What’s the hottest hair colour at the moment? Blue... Blue is so cool that pantene have named classic blue as the colour of the year! Kevin Murphy has classic blue sitting top of their colour charts right now! You can check out our Classic Blue looks inside with collections from all over the globe all featuring this amazing colour. In our last issue we featured a special editorial on industry icon David Bendell, for which we received a lot of feedback from past students who have fond memories of their time with him. So it is with sadness that we announce that David passed away at his home in Marlborough on the 19th February. David may you rest in peace, you have left behind a wonderful legacy for us all. One of the best things about producing this magazine is to be able to bring our readers stories about interesting people, the ones that contribute to our industry, and that have made a real difference in their own way. We talk to Maryann Dodd from Palmerston North, retiring this year after 45 years! A fabulous story about her lifelong hairdressing journey. One thing that we have been aware of is the recent proliferation of Day Spas opening in popular tourist areas such as Queenstown and Wanaka, it seems a holiday is not complete without a relaxing visit to a Day Spa while you are there. We have heard of instances where some are booked out a month or two ahead! It now pays to book your Spa experience before you go! Look out for some great Day Spas coming in Images later this year! Barbershops are booming! Never before have we seen so many new barbershops opening, they are literally popping up everywhere! With this in mind we chat to Emma Lodge from Everyguy Men’s Haircuts for Men over in Albany to get the inside running on this new hair cutting phenomenon! As usual we have our new products section, and once again we are bowled over by the sheer amount of hot new products hitting our shores! For all you sustainability heroes, do we have the product for you... organic, vegan shampoo and beauty bars from Balade en Provence in the south of France. Here is a really cool product to have on your shelves. Great to talk about with your clients, while you save the planet as well!

BALADE EN PROVENCE WINS FRENCH COSMETICS AWARD FOR BEST NATURAL PRODUCT! HOT NEW PRODUCT
Balade en Provence is an organic, zero-waste cosmetics company from Provence in the south of France making sensorial beauty bars for hair, face & body. Their philosophy is to promote ‘bienveillance’ a French term that can best be defined as ‘a desire to do good.’ Balade en Provence are proud to state that just in 2019, they prevented the production of more than 500,000 plastic bottles!
them, which is why the saponification process is called the ‘cold process.’ This process also allows the ingredients in the bars to retain their natural properties.
Balade en Provence was founded in the village of Opio, their name means ‘a walk in Provence’. Products are inspired by the artistry, fragrances and flora of the region. When the first skincare line was started four years ago, they realised that most shampoos, shower gels, and other liquid care products contain over 80% of water, chemical preservatives, and plastic packaging.
Certified organic: All products are certified organic with BIO Earth Durable which is dedicated to ecological and organically sourced products. The Bio Earth Durable Label certifies: • Absence of pesticides • Respect for the environment and health • Use of organic ingredients
“The thought of trucks, boats, and planes burning energy to transport plastic-packaged, water-based products with ingredients that were potentially harmful to customers did not sit well with us, so we decided to do something about it”. Balade en Provence.
Vegan: All products are approved by the Vegan Society. The Vegan Society label certifies that: • The manufacturing and development of products did not involve the use of any animal product, by-product or derivative • No testing on animals
“We believe that all actions, big and small, have an impact. Therefore, we strive to do what is ‘good’ when developing our products, interacting with customers, working in our community and managing environmental waste. Our hope is that our actions inspire others to spread bienveillance as well.” Most liquid personal care products contain more than 80% water, chemical preservatives, and plastic packaging. Balade en Provence are on a mission to replace your liquid products with solid products that are rich, natural, and ecological alternatives to these liquid products. Balade en Provence want you to #MoveToSolid!
In 2019 Balade en Provence Invigorating Solid Shampoo for Men won the French Cosmetics Award for ‘Best Natural Product!’
Zero Waste: Balade en Provence bars are all packed in 100% compost-able and recyclable packaging. • Vegetable ink only is used on certified compost-able carton, printed in France • Products are primarily sourced, produced and packaged locally • Any excess ingredients are retained and used for other products
Balade en Provence products are artisan and contain ethically sourced, rich natural ingredients such as French green clay, rosehip oil, grape seed oil, and coconut oil. They are also certified organic, vegan, and packaged in zero-waste, 100% compost-able boxes. Beauty and grooming bars are made with care and patience in the most natural way possible. The Balade en Provence artisans create a blend of the highest quality natural oils and rich organic ingredients, such as grapeseed oil, coconut oil, rapeseed oil, shea butter, and French clay to make the bars. The bars are then left to ‘rest’ for 30 days on wooden shelves, to allow time for the oils to blend and mature. They do NOT heat

DANNY PATO DIRECTS AUT ROOKIE FASHION GRADUATE SHOW FASHION Four-time Hair Expo NZ Hairdresser of the Year Danny Pato designed a glittering array of looks as Hair Director for AUT Rookie in Auckland last November. Danny and his D&M Hair Design team styled the looks for the show, a graduate catwalk event for NZ’s leading fashion design school. At 90 minutes and with 45 models, it’s the biggest runway show in the country. “I love supporting these students,” said Danny. “helping to launch the next generation of Kiwi design talent to the industry. The work they produce is boundary-pushing, creative and fresh, and I love working with them to design hair looks that help bring their work to life”. For 2019’s show, Danny created a selection of classically-inspired styles – French rolls, braids, finger waves and ethereal buns – and completed them with a glittery finish. “Glitter isn’t actually good for the environment – it’s basically microplastic that never breaks down. So, to great the glitter looks for this show, I sourced biodegradable glitter from The Glitter Tribe. I created custom colour blends, mixing them with Davines Medium Hold Modelling Gel and painted them directly onto the hair.” D&M Hair Design and Davines have sponsored AUT Fashion Design School for nine years.

Perfect to throw in your gym bag or for those constantly travelling.
In general, men love doing research before investing in new stuff. Whether that’s the latest headphones, quietest lawnmower or the swankiest hotel; they want to find out the actual facts about something before buying. Nothing revolutionary here. But hang on, why not do the same for skin? As absolutely tons of men now know, there is a raft of real science available in the latest skincare. It’s tech for your skin. That’s exactly why when Medik8 made their For Men range, they changed absolutely nothing from the current lineup, except giving their existing formulas a sleek black pack. If it helps more men get into serious skincare, Medik8 says ‘the more the merrier’. Medik8 has carefully curated 3 ‘For Men’ CSA Philosophy Kits. Choosing both compatible and popular formulas at different strength levels and formats from their vitamin C, sunscreen and vitamin A lines to ensure the very best at home skincare experience; no matter your level of expertise or sensitivity.
SKINCARE

Beautiful Skin for Life has never been so simple. 2 full-size creams and a travel cleanser and you’re done. For the minimalists. Medik8 For Men CSA Philosophy Kit Containing Medik8’s best-selling, medium strength serums, this kit is a great way to embark on their anti-ageing philosophy and see visible results. Start here to help visibly restore, beautifully revitalise and prepare skin, so you can later move to higher strength serums. For those looking at upping their serious skincare game. Men’s skin is different. But here’s why it doesn’t matter…. Skin is skin. No matter how you identify. That’s why the secret to youngerlooking, truly great skin is the same for all of us: vitamin C plus sunscreen by day, vitamin A by night. This easy-to-follow CSA Philosophy contains everything you need to visibly reduce premature skin-ageing as well as futureproofing skin over time. That’s why when Medik8 made For Men, they controversially changed absolutely nothing... VITAMIN C PLUS SUNSCREEN BY DAY, VITAMIN A BY NIGHT “As a guy starting my career in skincare, I was always disappointed how poorly men were catered for within the industry - although of course, as the main consumers, it’s no surprise that women drove the technology. Now that more men are getting serious about skin health and ageing, we feel they deserve the best and not some watered-down version. To me, CSA is the foundation to great skin health for everyone. Men, women, everyone. Welcome to the Medik8 family. Welcome to Beautiful Skin for Life.” Elliot Isaacs, founder Medik8. Vitamin C: As one of the most well proven antioxidants in skincare, vitamin C fights a wide range of free radicals to help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots and uneven pigmentation. At the same time, the powerful vitamin visibly plumps and firms the complexion while amplifying luminosity. Sunscreen: 80% of skin ageing is caused by sun exposure. UVB rays target the upper layers of the skin, causing sunburn; while UVA rays penetrate deeper, damaging collagen and creating harmful free radicals that cause premature skin ageing. That’s why any anti-ageing skincare routine should always include at least a broad spectrum SPF 30 application every day. Even if it’s cloudy. Our sunscreens are formulated so they aren’t sticky and don’t leave a white residue on the beard area. Vitamin A: As the Experts in Vitamin A, we understand its exceptional importance to skin. This powerful molecule doesn’t just help resurface. It also helps to combat fine lines and wrinkles, visibly reduces blemishes and promotes a brighter, more even-toned complexion.

EMMA LODGE EVERYGUY HAIRCUTS FOR MEN ALBANY
BARBERSHOP
Nestled away behind the Caltex station in Mercari Way your’ll find one of Albany’s best kept secrets; Everyguy Haircuts for Men run by men’s hairdresser and barber, the effervescent Emma Lodge! Emma has built up an enviable reputation for quality men’s grooming with a smile! We chat to Emma to find out how her salon has achieved such a great following: What sets Everyguy Men’s Grooming apart from standard Barber shops? We are more like a men’s hairdresser, helping guys achieve great beards, natural colour blends for grey hair and a chilled out relaxed atmosphere for the everyday guy! Does the salon attract any particular type of male client and why? Everyguy attracts the professional man to the everyday tradie, we offer all types off haircuts from long to short styles, with my background of 16 years of experience I make my haircuts work for the everyday guy. I like it when a client shows me a photo or picture or asks me what I think would look good, I show them how to style their hair with a product I recommend. One trick I have learn’t is to rinse the hair out after the cut, for me that is important because the client will always go home and wash it, it’s also a way off encouraging clients to come for a cut during the day, another trick is to use water to show them how it will look as a cut always looks different with product in it. When it comes to clipper lengths, always start longer because you can always take more length off, if needed. I always show them the back of their haircut even if they don’t want to see it, I like to pay attention to hairlines and details men like a nice clean neckline also de hair the ears and trim the eyebrows.
18 | imagesmagazine.co.nz
Are men requesting colour services and what does Everyguy offer? We offer grey blends and prefer to stick to more natural colouring, but I do offer the odd highlight to some of my regular clients for a natural blonde look. A lot of guys won’t request it, But I offer or suggest it to them I call it a camo and cut service consisting of natural blends using American crew Precision Blend. I do have some clients that like a more stronger coverage but varies from client to client, it’s important to cater for the everyday guy not just for what is in fashion right now. How important is aftercare and what advice do you offer clients on this? At home advice is sooooo important it’s like a veggie garden you need to care and maintain it. I think all men should have at least (3 products) A good shampoo (and Conditioner). A styling product. A good moisturizer for the face and neck with sunscreen. What men’s product brands do you recommend? I’ve worked with many types of products over the years but choose American Crew, Triumph & Disaster and Fudge, that’s what I stock currently and recommend to my clients, All of my clients use my brands. Describe the most popular look being requested by men at the moment? This varies from day to day but mainly short to medium length looks.
What does Everyguy offer clients in the way of refreshments and entertainment? I have a few things available, including great coffee from Coffee Trendz, but about two years ago when I decided to take a lot off sugar out of my own diet, I was offering coke which is very high in sugar as you know, and so replaced it with Berocca instead. I have cool water available and just drop a Berocca tablet into it, clients love it and adds a bit of a healthier option, great for clients with hangovers too or if you just need a boost to get you through the day! We always have Duke TV on, that offers trivia questions in the morning and other pro-grammes like top gear!
Welcome to the ultimate combo for your salon... Quality Italian espresso coffee & unlimited filtered chilled still or sparkling water
On the first appointment what are the key important things you need to find out from the client? To help you give them the right haircut you need to be able to match their job or lifestyle. For example; if they are a business guy I like to give them something smart but something they can mess up and have a bit more casual on the weekend. Do they use product? If yes that’s great if not, then recommend something natural like a paste, most of the time they just don’t know how to use it properly and that’s why they don’t use it... So show them! Do they wash their hair every day? I mean with shampoo most guys just wet it down you can tell when they don’t, most guys it varies depends on their lifestyles. Chatting to your client is helpful, find out their hobbies, what they don’t like has always been one I often use so you can find out what they want and need, keep to simple questions. Do you rebook the client while they are there, and what booking system do you use? We rebook every client before they walk out and my rebooking rate is 100%. By the third visit you have a regular client, but make sure you keep making them feel like a new client every time. For example: I have clients who don’t normally have a drink or product and I know they will say no but I always ask.
Easy to use, NO mess or wastage All our espresso and water machines are made in Italy. Our coffee pods are environmentally friendly, sustainable and biodegradable.
Something I’ve learn’t is never expect your regulars to be regular. I use Hairware/Beautyware for my booking system it sends out a text reminder the day before their appointment sometimes I have to send another text to remind them if they don’t confirm which can be a little bit more work, But it really keeps your salon busy and clients coming back. Any famous clients that we need to know about? We do, but I can’t tell you. We have customer confidentiality policies in place, but between you and me mainly kiwi sports stars! Tell us about any exciting future for Everyguy? We are still going strong after 10 years but would like to build a strong team to join me in the success of Everyguy there are still a few services iI would like to add. There is a strong market for men’s hair and currently we are the only men’s salon in Albany.

INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT LOBETTA Hair Stylist, Photographer, Filmographer and Artist Standout hairdressing experience of your life (either as an artist or spectator)? Back in the 70’s I began to understand that hair was this organic form in the way it moved, I started to treat it as a material that could be maneuvered into any given shape I could think of. This would mean a radical shift from styling hair to sculpting hair, cutting hair seemed to give way to this new ideology, and seemed to lose its importance as I began to focus on hair being this three dimensional animated form. My goal was to take the essential quality of this fibrous form as a basis, and use the structure of the hair to create shapes and textures that had never been seen before. From an aesthetic viewpoint this was the start of a revolution, at that time I really believed that sculpting a head of hair with your hands was the closest feeling I’ve had to looking at myself as an artist. The intricate process in achieving these end results was almost like performance art, this was the art of seeing differently.
Do you approach your other artistic endeavours the same way you do hair? I wish I could, but each of the disciplines I work within require a different set of rules, regardless of what genre I work in, I’m always looking for those intricate details that give the work a visual richness. Whether its film, hair, photography or contemporary art, I find the excess of detailing intriguing, as it gives the work an overwhelming richness. As an image maker in such shifting times, I believe it’s my role to try and capture new paradigms in the world of hair and beauty, or at least try to seed a new idea. Perhaps by working across these different disciplines causes a celebration of unfiltered life that’s all woven together that satisfies my creative needs.
Who’s your creative idol? Andy Warhol Describe your hairdressing style in three words: Disciplined, madness, with a sprinkling of eccentricity. Why do you believe organisations such as the AHC and NZARH are important for the hairdressing industry? I believe that hairdressing organizations such as the AHC perpetuate growth, quality, and focus on business, create consumer awareness encouraging the youth to enter the beauty industry. It’s important to have representation for a community of hairdressing professionals.

KYLIE HAYES NZARH 2019 EDITORIAL STYLIST OF THE YEAR PEOPLE
One of our most talented hairdressers, Kylie Hayes from Moha Hairdressing in Dunedin is enjoying a brilliant run at the moment. In the last 12 months Kylie has picked up two very important NZ hairdressing awards. The prestigious NZARH 2019 Editorial Stylist of the Year and NZ Creative Artist at the Wella National TrendVision Awards. Chosen as one of three finalists Best International Avant-garde Collection at the International Hairdressing Awards held in Madrid. Kylie has shown to be a consistent finalist at NZ Hair Expo Hairdresser of the Year Awards, and has also won Platinum at the 2017 International TrendVision Awards in London, proving beyond doubt that she can foot it with the very best in the world! We caught up with Kylie to find out what makes this very special woman tick! Congratulations on being chosen as NZARH Editorial Stylist of the Year, what does winning this accolade mean for you? It means that I was once again to fulfil my desire to inspire industry. To be able to compete at this level requires one hell of a lot of commitment, what sacrifices have you had to make in order to achieve the success that you have? I am constantly torn, as a Mother, Wife, Artist, friend, employer and all the other life roles I play, I am often not afforded the time, I need to accomplish all that I’d like. I’m often loaded with guilt for missing my children’s birthdays or not putting them to bed as ‘mummies working’ I always remind myself though, I’m teaching them to be strong, independent and hardworking. How does the salon (Moha Hairdressing) function without you, when your away travelling and involved in photoshoots etc? I have the most supportive loyal, loving business partner and friend, My husband Nelson and equally the most incredible team, they are like my extended family, they all make sure everything runs seamlessly. I also do horrendous hours before and afterwards to make sure clients are taken care of.

Kylie Hayes with Images editor Sheryl Buckley
How do you keep yourself motivated and inspired, and where do you get your ideas from? I dear to inspire, I believe what motivates me is the feeling I get when someone learns and grows from my guidance, it’s such an immeasurable feeling. My hair designs are heavily influenced by fashion (I’m addicted) people are often surprised when I tell them it’s a garment that initiates the idea. I’m drawn to clever design seen in architecture, furniture and clothing. The colours and textures I see in nature urge me to explore the same combinations within my hair designs. Simply put....I’m an artist, with the need to keep mastering my craft. Who are the Stylists that you admire and follow? There really are too many and they all have varied aesthetics, and skill that they represent and bring to our industry: Angelo Seminara, Lyndal Salmon -Biba Academy, Xpression, The Tognini’s, Tabatha Coffey, Lisa Vitale, Kobi bokshish, Yoshi, The Keeleys, Patrick Cameron, Sylvester Finold, Hobs Salon, Vidal Sasson, Robert lobetta... this list is endless What advice can you offer to our younger stylists who would like to follow in your footsteps? Enter everything available. Dear to be seen! How important is it to belong to an organisation like the NZARH and why should our younger hairdressers join and be part of it? The NZARH competition provides an incredible platform for us to share our ideas. I have always supported the live competitions, it
ensures good honest skill. Young hairdressers should be encourage to participate it’s a brilliant way to grow your skill set and confidence. Looking back over your career, has there been any particular cutting or colouring technique that you have learn’t that has really defined your style? I have been told numerous times that ‘I’m rare’ I actually perform across all disciplines, I design, colour and style. Maybe my Wella trend Vision platinum winning bullèt (bowlcut fused with a mullet) defines me? Or I’m probably well know for my love of avant garde styling. Being based in Dunedin, do you feel this an advantage or a disadvantage as far as keeping abreast of the trends? Definitely not a disadvantage, the digital worlds allows us to seek instant knowledge. Tell us about your plans for the year ahead, is there any exciting news that you can share with us? This year includes a fair bit of travel, I have already been to Sydney and Spain, I plan to be in Melbourne for hair expo, I have a family holiday to Hawaii in August for a friends wedding and I have just been informed that my 3 day retreat for Wella Trend Vision has been postponed to September with a new destination - The Canary Islands!

WAXING
IMAGES DAY SPA BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS It’s hard to believe that Images Day Spa in Morrinsville, one of the most popular beauty Spas in central Waikato has been around for close to 36 years and started out as a room in the home of Sandi McCarthy. Sandi moved to Morrinsville, New Zealand from Wales to be with her Veterinary husband, whom she meet while he was travelling the UK. Sandi started out doing waxing and facials from home and found it was a great way meet and connect with the local women in town, all those years ago. Today Images Day Spa is centrally located in Thames Street and attracts regular clientele from all over the region, including Te Aroha, Paeroa, Matamata, Cambridge, Putururu, Hamilton and as far as Pukekohe. Images Day Spa offers a variety of general beauty treatment, spa packages, massages and also appearance medicine. The team consist of 7 qualified staff members, plus a doctor and visiting micropigmentation specialist. Waxing and hair removal remains a staple of the Spa’s day to day business. We caught up with salon manager Karen Bracey to find out why Images Day Spa is experiencing so much success with their waxing! Wow, you guys have been doing this for so long you must really know what you doing, what type of waxing services do you offer clients? We have a standard menu that covers all types of hair removal for clients.

Sandi
What brand of wax do you use and why? Depilève from Spain is our go-to brand, we have used this wax for over 20 years and we have found that it offers consistency of quality, clients love it and results are outstanding!
How long does each hair removal process last and how long before clients return for a followup? For our regular customers its usually between 4 and 6 weeks depending on personal hair growth.
How easy is Depilève wax to apply? Very easy to apply, absolutely no problems with the skin. In fact it is very rare to experience any unexpected responses! We have also found the back up service from our suppliers Celtine Beauty to be excellent!
Do you undertake any client consultation before the waxing? Yes, for new customers we first take them through the overall process and ask them about any medication they might be on that could effect their skin.
Does Depilève wax leave any odour? Very very little, clients aren’t keen on having their favourite perfume overshadowed.
Are clients offered aftercare advice and homecare products? We have a full range of hair inhibitor products and aftercare products which we encourage clients to use at their leisure at home.

INTREPID COUTURE COLLECTION BY GOLDWELL CREATIVE TEAM
ARCHITECTURAL HAIR EDUCATION By Cathy Davys My programmes are designed to give hairdressers the confidence to be on the floor earlier, to ignite the passion again in those who may have taken a break from their journey, and to train the future trainers to mastery.
This year Goldwell’s Creative Team has created a Couture Collection that is fearless, bold and daring. Intrepid shows the spirit of the age by going beyond convention and expectation. In 2020, it is all about clever combinations of color. The Colors merge and melt together - from soft to strong and from dark to light. The shades are bold but more sophisticated and refined than in previous seasons. The tones are “oxygenated” as if they have been infused with an airy softness and the effect is subtle but fashion-forward in all the right ways. It is time to create Oxygenation through the multi-layering of tone-on-tone shades to create beautiful color melts. The cuts are all inspired by vintage hairstyles, using clever combinations of rounded shapes and pure weight lines to create a sophisticated and gender-neutral street feel. Disconnections and multilayering take these shapes to the next level, creating a 70s feel with a modern edge. The vintage cutting techniques with hidden disconnection and pure lines achieve a modern editorial feel.

D&M HAIR DESIGN RAISES $8,064 FOR AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES! On the first Saturday in 2020, Danny Pato and the D&M Hair Salon team donated $8,064 (the takings for the day) to volunteer fire-fighters, humanitarian groups and animal rescue organisations involved with the Australian bushfire climate change crisis.
“I am so thankful to all of our amazing clients and team for making this fund-raising day possible,” said Danny. “It’s such a heart-breaking, frustrating and catastrophic disaster for our neighbours in Australia. I feel so helpless about it, for the land, the people, and the poor animals. It’s so devastating.” D&M split the donations between the NSW Rural Fire Service, VIC Country Fire Authority, Australian Red Cross, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and Wires Wildlife Rescue. Images Magazine hopes that other salons will follow D&M’s lead and lend their support to this worthy cause. It is an opportunity to connect with your local community and grow the profile of your salon in a positive way.

TRAINING
CATHY DAVYS INDUSTRY TRAINER OF THE YEAR 2019 Cathy Davys who was awarded Trainer of the Year 2019 at the recent Industry Awards in Wellington, has been conducting training events at her Architectural Hair Education retreat. Nestled in the foot hill of the Tararuas in the beautiful Wairarapa is 540 the Lodge. It is holistic, peaceful and magical, perfect for opening and freeing the mind to new ideas. “Architectural Hair Education was born out of my desire to give back to other hairdressers. My belief that you must have a strong foundation as a starting point will never falter. Hair Design is Architecture – if the foundation is not strong, the house falls over.” says Cathy. According to Cathy, recently it has become apparent that younger stylists do not have a good grasp of basic technical skills to achieve the latest hair trends. Curl is back. No Longer is it acceptable to limit one’s skills to a straightening iron alone. There is a generation who have lost or never embraced hair skills; hence they are limited in their ability to achieve today’s looks.
40 | imagesmagazine.co.nz
“I endeavour to bring into my courses all the elements of classic skills to achieve the new looks of today. At Architectural Hair Education we foster a very safe environment, there are no wrong questions, the environment is holistic and open. Keeping my classes small enables learners who may be nervous or lack confidence to be watched over and guided in a positive way.” “My programmes are designed to give HITO Apprentices and hairdressers the confidence to grow and be on the floor earlier, to ignite the passion again in those who may have taken a break from their journey, and to train future trainers to Mastery.” Says Cathy. Architectural Hair Education is for lifelong learners, those who want to be best, to have longevity in the industry. How to move forward in your career and life. Cathy’s training successes have come as a result of creating a unique environment and partnership for learning. “In 2017/18 I travelled to the Hamptons, New York to work with Vivienne Mackinder, Artistic Director for Vidal Sassoon and Trevor Sorbie. Vivienne has developed a training programme that is universal. It is the Designer Programme I have personalised to educate HITO Apprentices.” “I also run a programme Train the Trainer: Our industry is in a flux, owner operators working harder and never having the time to train. AHE provides salon owner with the skills their HITO Apprentices need to pass their units and become Masters.” Says Cathy. To give you an idea how a training session might evolve, here is a brief overview in Cathy’s own words: Recently I was engaged by a very busy salon owner to help her give her two, year two apprentices more confidence, skills and pass their units. This was held at 540 The Lodge over 5 days. Sunday August 4 - 9am – 6pm Attendees Jordan and Larisa.
Agenda: Coffee, getting to know the girls, they were super excited and nervous. • Establishing their weak areas and their strong points. • Watched a 30-minute video on face shapes, you cannot design if you don’t know the framework. • We went through how to section and where to stand and how to use the mirror for balance and line. • First haircut was increase layer. They both did this very well and came in under the set time of 30 min. • Following the cut, we moved into directional blow waving. Younger stylists are blasting the hair and hot ironing it, no skill is shown in manipulating the hair. This exercise was exciting for the girls, when I shared how a blow wave will last longer and you can charge more. • With the mannequin hair still long, we went into facial framing with the razor as an introduction. • Cut two was a graduated Bob, understanding angles where your standing. • Over the next four days I had the girls for a one on one for two days each. • We worked on a plan for tech days and timing plus model selection.
• We followed up with a complex hair up, French rolls, finger-waves, full razor cuts and graduation. “I am also very aware of the stresses of outside influences that some learners experience. Often life skills are not taught, and these also need to be shared in a positive way. Eating and exercising correctly as hairdressing is demanding. Society’s pressure on how we look. My approach to these issues is to slow the pace down and have my ears and eyes on, each issue has a personality of its own.” “My recent programme with the year two girls had one of them unsure if she wanted to continue hairdressing, her confidence was low, with support from her employer and family and no pressure, she decided yes, she did. Having the privilege of this knowledge and one on one private training for two days was a luxury and the newfound confidence was very rewarding to see.” “Running a salon can be challenging – I know. I had my own business for 32 years, from small beginnings with an apprentice and myself to a large team of 20 plus. With 42 years in the industry I see a need to help salon owners and teams. As an owner you’re often on the floor – the biggest earner – so stepping off the salon floor to train can be scary. This is where investing in your team will allow you to do what your best at.”
• I engaged some friends to come for cuts as I wanted to see real time hairdressing.

NYFW
MARC JACOBS SHOW FALL/WINTER 20 Hair by Guido, Redken Global Creative Director
“I spent 3-4 days with Marc planning out this show. We were focused on three types of women: the past, the present, and the future. Marc is very passionate about style. This show is all about different styles, all in one genre, but in different points of time. He calls it ‘dynamic classicism,’ so there’s a classicness to the way the girls look. There are nods to different time periods: the 60s, 90s, but in a way that girls might wear their hair today. You’ll see girls with ponytails, deep side parts, scarves, hats, uptown girls, downtown girls… with Marc, there’s always and uptown and a downtown element to his looks. Marc is inspired by everyone... every kind of woman, every kind of man. There are some elegant hats in this show, a few hair looks like the on Bella, but the overall theme of the show is what prevails. I’ve prepped the looks with the newlyrepackaged Redken Detox Hair Cleansing Cream, used Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texturising Spray for natural texture, and used Redken Pillow Proof Two Day Extender Dry Shampoo for some volume at the root and to absorb excess oil. It’s a very ‘Marc Jacobs’ show.”
44 | imagesmagazine.co.nz
Create the Look with Guido: 1. Prep hair by washing with the newly-repackaged Redken Detox Hair Cleansing Cream. 2. Center part your hair using your fingers. 3. Allow your hair to air-dry. 4. Apply a few spritzes of the Redken Pillow Proof Two Day Extender Dry Shampoo to your roots to add in some touchable volume. 5. If needed, use a 1-2” curling iron and add in some bends into your lengths. 6. Once cooled, run your fingers through your lengths to soften the look. 7. Spritz a few spritzes of Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texturizing Spray throughout your lengths and ends and tousle.
CLASSIC BLUE - PANTONE’S 2020 COLOR OF THE YEAR!
COLOUR
Maybe it’s next new hair color. A timeless and enduring blue hue, Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. What could be better than that in your hair? We sat down with Kate Reid, expert colorist and Design Director for COLOR.ME by Kevin Murphy to get the scoop on all things Classic Blue.
Kate Reid
Kate says “squid ink blue” has started to come through hair over the past few months, so it’s no surprise that we’ll see Pantone inspired Classic Blue take over. Reid’s work is all about innovation and bringing fashion to the hair, so we asked her a few questions you must know if you’re looking to take the plunge into Classic Blue. Who wears Classic Blue best? Classic Blue is worn best on cooler skin tones with pink cheeks, whiter to blue skin under tones. If navy or classic blue is too dark think about trying frosted shades like ice blue or pearl instead as these tones also are huge for 2020 but on a much lighter depth.
Have we seen any celebs wear Classic Blue? Classic blues are worn best like Billie Eilish, for that rock edge or that darker mysterious shades. These can be added over dark depths to add incredible shine or over pre lightened areas for a brighter pop. Will your blue ever turn green? When hair is lightened, it can expose unwanted warmth. This yellow that is exposed can be kept at bay by using products like BLONDE.ANGEL WASH and TREATMENT every time you wash your hair as this helps to keep the yellow eliminated, which is why it turns green over time.

Cleanse & Care Collection needed to deliver high performance for professionals, provide a luxurious experience for salon customers, stand out as part of a beautiful retail display and be easy to sell after the service.” A closer look at each product highlights just how well the collection caters for normal, dry and coloured hair. Hydrating delivers essential moisture, Purifying removes product build up, Sensitive is a fragrance free formula with antiinflammatory properties and Blonde offers superior toning of unwanted brassy and gold hues. “As one of our signature retail ranges, the Cleanse & Care Collection packaging needed to fit with the modern aesthetic of our Styling Collection but still retain its own identity. The organic design evokes the botanical ingredients of the range in an elegant way.” Premium hair treatments also play a big part in the collection. Miracle Repair Mask and Miracle Leave In Balm already have a cult following due to their ability to quickly nourish dry and damaged hair, smooth frizz and add shine. The same can be said for 24/7 Heaven Cuticle Sealer which provides long lasting hydration and thermal protection for soft and silky hair. “Our goal was to create a timeless collection of products that would outlast the trends and we’re so excited to share the results.” For more information, please contact Dateline on 0800 169 600 or visit www.dateline.co.nz.

MARYANN DODD FROM THE HAIRMARKET RETIRES AFTER MORE THAN 45 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY! PEOPLE Maryann’s hairdressing journey as a 15 year old apprentice at the ‘Majestic Hair Salon’ in Palmerston North many years ago. She went on to open her very first salon ‘Lord Rajahs’ a men’s cut and blow wave bar, the first one of its kind ever in Palmerston North! Remember it was the early 70’s and long hair for men was all the rage! According to Maryann business was slow to begin with but then once the concept caught on, it quickly took off and business just exploded! Her next venture was to open ‘Novello Hair Stylists’ a more traditional women’s hairdressing salon consisting of 13 staff, the salon soon became the talk of Palmerston North. Not long after Maryann opened ‘Headquarters Hair Stylists’ the First Ladies cut and blow bar opposite Lord Rajahs. Around 1979 she started ‘Green Village Hair Company’ which progressed to a total of 9 salons, 2 in Wellington and 7 in the Manawatu.
Maryann showcased her hairdressing skills by participating regularly in the NZARH National Comps and over the years has proudly won 21 ‘1st place’ Trophies. During Travels to the USA and Australia she was quick to pick up on the trend towards shampoo only stores and so 27 years ago, Maryanne introduced the first one to Palmerston North, ‘Shampoo Plus’. Today the Shampoo Plus group comprises of 11 retail stores, stretching from Tauranga to Nelson, also operating a large online store. 25 years ago Maryann and Michelle Boudreau launched ‘The Hairmarket’ supplying local salons a full range of leading hair brands and products at wholesale prices. The Hairmarket is now recognised as the leading supplier of hair products in the Manawatu. The success was such that Maryanne gradually sold off all of her salons, the last one 5 years ago.

10 years ago Maryann and Michelle set up a new business ‘Green Village Marketing Systems’ which operates primarily as a consultant management company for other hair salons. The company takes care of the back-end for each of the salons ensuring bills are paid on time, wages, tax obligations etc are all covered. This also includes introducing a successful marketing plan for each business. This allows salon owners to concentrate on what they do best... ‘Cut hair’ and of course look after their customers!
Hairmarket Ltd today consists of a team of 7 overseeing 3 separate companies. With Maryann retiring to beautiful Seatoun by the sea in Wellington, Michelle Boudreau her business partner for the last 37 years, will now take the helm and continue the legacy that Maryann has helped create. We wish Maryanne the very best for her retirement and with her new adventure developing a lifestyle block in Te Horo on the Kapiti Coast.
Along the way Maryann picked up a couple of well deserved accolades. In 1988 she was named More Magazine NZ Business Woman of the Year and in 2000 she was runner-up for NZ Woman of the New Millennium.

DOES YOUR SALON, SPA OR CLINIC NEED A LEADER? By Alyssa McArley
The difference between strong leadership and effective management is often overlooked. A manager coordinates the day to day running of a business, but a leader is able to motivate a team into creating ongoing success. Great leaders and managers are both very important. A lack of leadership may result in stagnation, and a lack of management may result in big dreams with no follow through. Often, salon, spa and clinic owners will focus on the management side of things, because they need to ensure their business is profitable right now. But when you’re planning for ongoing future success, business growth and building a strong team to help get you there - what you need is a great leader. So what is the difference? Leaders are responsible for creating a vision for the future. But the real value comes from communicating this vision to the team, showing them how they can help bring it to life, and motivating them to succeed. In a business environment, having a team who are committed to your vision means they’ll be passionate about the direction you‘re heading in and help you achieve your goals. In comparison, managers are task-orientated people that get the job done, they check, implement, organise and see tasks through to the end - a role that is essential in any business.
58 | imagesmagazine.co.nz
Either way, you may be lucky enough to have one person who is both a great leader and a manager, or you may have different individuals fill each role. How can you be a good leader? It’s clear that having a leader is important to the success of your business. However becoming a good leader doesn’t happen overnight. So we’ve put together a list of essential traits that leaders have, so you can begin actively practicing these in your salon, spa or clinic. Encourage personal development: Your team member’s goals are just as important as the businesses goals. In an industry where people are the focus, it can be easy to focus on your clients first and your employees second. Encouraging your team to have a clear direction for their career, and providing them with training opportunities shows that you’re invested in helping them grow. Achieving personal career goals helps motivate your employees, and when you’re supporting them to move forward in their career, they’re more likely to become an amazing stylist or therapist for your business. Know your team: The easiest way to implement change and be a leader is to understand what matters to the individuals in your team. So you’ll need to spend some time getting to know them. It’s as easy as taking a moment to stop and chat and being genuinely interested in their lives.
Arrange regular one-on-one meetings to give your team members a chance to raise anything private that they may not want others to hear. Spending time with your team outside the salon, spa or clinic is also helpful for building stronger relationships. Lead from the front: Lead by example, and your team will follow. Great leaders happily complete all tasks, no matter how annoying or mundane, and they do them properly. The easiest way to set a high standard for your team is to make sure you’re maintaining one 24/7. When you’re training a new team member, show them how things are done, instead of just telling them. This makes them more likely to complete the task properly in the future. Be resilient: It has been scientifically proven that emotions are contagious, so as a leader it’s important to learn to regulate your own emotions. A positive mood equals increased energy and therefore higher productivity, which can lead to a much more successful business. If something negative happens, you don’t need to fake optimism, but being realistic and focusing on the positives can help keep your team motivated.
To help you get into the habit of doing this, simply ask yourself - How’s your mood today? How will your current mood affect your team? Being more aware of these answers can help you keep yourself in check. Be transparent: Create a culture of honesty, so that as a leader you can be open and transparent with everyone about the business and their performance. Make your team feel as though they can come to you with anything or speak up if they have ideas. This will help reinforce the team environment, as after all, you can’t run a business alone. Prioritising managerial tasks is often the focus when growing a business, so it’s easy to forget the importance of leadership. Remember that both are crucial and having a good leader in a team will help make your business future focused. So make a commitment to being a better leader and use these tips to make small, incremental changes to become the best leader you can be. Alyssa McArley is the Marketing Manager at Kitomba Salon & Spa Software. To learn more about how Kitomba can help take care of the day to day management of your business and give you time to focus on being a leader, visit www. kitomba.com or call 0800 161 101.

ON YOUR BIKE GET THE LOOK
by Indira Schauwecker Toni&Guy UK
STYLIST
On Your Bike is a sporty, dynamic, adventurous and independent girl. Emulating feelings of freedom and experimental status. From sexy biker shorts to leather and heels; all fashion elements of strength and self-confidence. Direct inspiration for the shape was taken from a biker’s helmet, the technique was designed to emulate the solid rounded shape and the softness of hair blowing in the wind. Strength and softness are key elements within this technique, along with understanding the proportions of bone structure and suitability of where the outline of the silhouette is placed. With the layering technique natural texture, proportion and hair density are all taken into consideration to create perfect harmony between the two elements. Create the Look with Indira Schauwecker: 1. A radial section is taken, two curved sections on the profile are taken from the lower recession to behind the ear. A profile section is taken behind the radial, elevation and distribution is 90 degrees and cut round following the head until you get to the occipital bone. After that drop your layers slightly to get tighter in the nape, this technique is repeated behind the radial following rounded sections 2. The fringe length is decided taking a profile section and brought to the front. 3. The first guide is cut on its guide and cut vertically to create slight graduation at the front of the fringe area. Continuing to use this guide in the same way, create a rounded fringe in front of the radial. The guide is taken from behind and a round layer technique is applied in the front connecting the top and the fringe.

4. The profile section is divided in two diagonal back sections and the side is cut T to the parting and elevated at one-fingers depth, creating a rounded strong outline around the cheek bones. Continue to bring the rest of the hair to this line and check balance on both sides. 5. Starting on the higher part of the sections the guide of the round layer is used to soften and blend the top layer with the sides. Taking diagonal back sections and overdirect everything to the top guide and cut square. 6. Apply label.m Blow Out Spray and Sea Salt Spray before drying and personalising, with some deep point cutting, finishing with Powder to Wax. Indira Schauwecker is one of the most dynamic hairdressers of her generation, with a multitude of creative awards to her name, including 2011, 2012 and 2016 Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year and 2017 London Hairdresser of the Year. When she’s not inspiring tomorrow’s generation at the London Academy, she is heading up teams at London Fashion Week and travelling the world as TONI&GUY’s Session Stylist.

THE BRISTOL FREIGHTER AND THE SALON… By Malcolm Gibbons
Today as I sit down to write this piece my thoughts go to what am I going to say that will make a difference to hopefully a lot of salon owners – what secret gem can I share that will help move them from where they are to where they want to be? So what am I going to share with you in a short article that could make a huge difference for your business and my thoughts go to the similarities of an old aeroplane and a salon... The simple truth is that success in business is much like an old aeroplane… have you heard of the Bristol Freighter? This is a bull nosed lumbering old workhorse that flew freight rattling and clanging from one place to another for years
and years - Its best known use was as an air ferry to carry cars and their passengers over relatively short distances. You may be wondering what this has to do with business, well this is where the story gets interesting… When I was a lad these planes would regularly fly over our house and a very vivid memory of mine is dad always commenting (he was a creature of habit!) “There goes 40,000 nuts and bolts all flying together in close formation!” Of course we always laughed at this and looking up tended to agree with him. How is this got anything to do with business I hear you ask? Well… you could almost say a successful business is just like a Bristol freighter, but instead of nuts and bolts it’s systems and procedures working together in close unison that truly gets the results. If you really think about it, each piece of business success needs to fit into each other nicely and snuggly and each piece is reliant on the other performing its role at its best to be able to operate efficiently and effectively. I often talk to salon owners who are experiencing a lot of challenges within their businesses, from low client numbers, retention issues of both customers and staff – essentially operating in a form of chaos when they are wanting control but they are typically suffering from a lack of clarity and a lack of any form of direction that is taking them forward and not holding them back.
78 | imagesmagazine.co.nz
Of course there are many and varied reasons for this and not all salons are experiencing the exact same issues as the other, although breaking down the problem in its simplest form there is very little difference between each salon and their problems. I have been in this game long enough to have analysed what and why these challenges and issues are happening often and more importantly why – as a result I have created the salon success model that frameworks how to create a successful salon. This very framework forms the basis of my work with salons and their results - and creating a successful salon is not as complicated as many make it... Most salon owners know what they want for their salons, they know that they are capable of so much more, but there is something stooping them achieving the results they know they should be getting. My Salon Success Model forms the basis of growing a successful and sustainable business and is incorporated into the ongoing group trainings I do (QuarterCLUB, PowerUP etc). It is simply the framework we use to get successful results with everyone we work with. So what is one of the biggest issues that hold a salon back from being as successful as it could be? There is no real plan! Sure the owner has a dream, an idea, they certainly know they could have a better business than
they’ve got, the simple truth is they haven’t devised a plan to get them there. Now don’t get me wrong and let’s not over simplify this. It’s not easy - especially when there is so much to do and there is also life outside the business! So let’s look at the underlying issues of no plan, or in some cases negatively geared planning… what’s that? Well that’s where you’re plan is not to go bankrupt, you’ll do whatever you can to stop from losing your business so you’re focussed on looking behind and that clouds your ability to be positively geared towards growth and development. Let me highlight a scenario… You won the salon you’ve got 2 or 3 staff members, you’re fully booked with clients (well you have to be to pay the bills aye) but you don’t have a lot of time for much else, you always seem to be chasing your tail… however your 2 or 3 team members seem to have plenty of time, not a full book, an almost carefree life… at your expense… however because you’re ‘doing clients’ all the time you struggle to help build their clientele, create structure, culture etc. and that just tires you out and leaves you no joy in owning you dream business and just with a job. Someone once told me they bought a salon because of three things in their last job… they didn’t like the long hours, they didn’t like the money and they didn’t like the boss… so they bought a salon, now a couple of years later they are in a job where they don’t like the long(er) hours, hate that they’ve taken a pay cut and unfortunately are starting to not like the boss (and they’re the boss!!). So the issue is there is no plan, too easy… lets create a plan… that’s where the going gets tough, have you sat at your computer or moleskin notebook ready to write the plan only to be staring at blankness for a while then get distracted to doing something else because you simply cannot think of what you actually need to do?
By the end of the action packed morning, you will have an absolute focus on where your business well be in 90 days’ time and a complete action plan to get you there. Using this road-map, you and your coach will take you and your business from where you are to where you want to be. Sharon loves QuarterCLUB because: “I get to re-focus on the business and the implementation of strategies and systems.” If you’re a salon owner who’s tired of simply surviving in business and are ready to take more cash, win more clients, dramatically improve your bottom line and, to put it bluntly, get your business back on track in the next 12 months then QuarterCLUB is for you. QuarterCLUB is your chance to step out of the Salon and get focused... Shelley has joined because: “It has shown me how easy it is to put systems in place and set goals that will increase the revenue in my business” If you want your business to continue to grow in these challenging times you need to have a focused, clear and practical plan for you and your team to follow. To see more information about QuarterCLUB and join go to www.salonbusinesscoach.com/Quarterclub or call us on 021 210 8950 for more information. QuarterCLUB chapters are limited to just 20 people in each, there are limited spots available so we invite you to join your industry peers by joining a QuarterCLUB chapter in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.
Or maybe you have ideas, but don’t really know how to implement so lose interest quickly and move on to doing something else (like another client)? Or you have a plan with strategies and tactics included but don’t actually get around to implementing because you (like most of us) really suck at being self-accountable? You are not alone with any of these as most other salon owners are struggling with the exact same things... That’s why over six years ago I created QuarterCLUB. QuarterCLUB is all about clarity and action and is where you meet with our salon business coach and other like-minded salon owners in either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch and actually get help to plan business results ahead of time, create strategies and tactics that actually work whilst networking with others sharing ideas and solutions to today’s business dilemmas and issues. Clarity is Power Imagine knowing precisely where you want your business to be in 90 days’ time. But perhaps more importantly, imagine knowing exactly how you are going to get there. Develop your Road-map to a brighter future! Salon Business Coach’s QuarterCLUB is a powerful actionpacked and highly focused half day workshop every quarter for a low monthly fee that combines the synergy of your local coaching team and like-minded, innovative salon owners to create momentum for your business.
Malcolm loves helping hair & beauty salon owners go from chaos to control, grow their business & free up their time so they can do what they want to do as opposed to doing what they have to do, and he gets a kick out of seeing them happier today than they were yesterday. PARRIS GOEBEL THE FACE OF M·A·C COSMETICS NEW ZEALAND MAKEUP Parris Goebel world-renowned choreographer and creative director, is now the face of M·A·C Cosmetics New Zealand. Parris’ personal relationship with M·A·C spans a decade, having purchased her first Ruby Woo lipstick at the age of 15. This iconic shade exploded in popularity following the release of Justin Bieber’s Purpose: The Movement music video for Sorry, which Parris choreographed, directed and performed in alongside her ReQuest dance crew. The dancers all wore the iconic red lip colour, showcasing the versatility of Ruby Woo across a range of skin tones. Since then Parris has been at the forefront of the dance industry, joining forces with the likes of Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande all of whom are past M·A·C collaborators, to choreograph world-class performances, while developing a global cult following of her own. Parris embodies M·A·C’s brand DNA as the ultimate trend-setter; unapologetic for her individuality, creativity and empowered approach to makeup. “It’s an honour to announce Parris as the face of M·A·C New Zealand and to showcase Parris’ signature Ruby Woo lips in the campaign. It was a no-brainer to have a creative risk-taker like Parris front a campaign for M·A·C – a radical beauty brand that has always championed creatives, performers and designers and worked behind the scenes within the industry since its inception.

M·A·C has a long-standing relationship with Parris, and I’m personally very proud to have worked alongside her for many years and to see this authentic collaboration come to life.” Kiekie Stanners, M·A·C Senior Artist, New Zealand. “When I found Ruby Woo, it was just like the perfect red” says Parris. “I always feel like in the evening, or if I just want to look super glam, I’ll do a simple winged eye liner but then make my lip pop with a red lipstick. Ruby Woo
always makes me feel bold and sexy.” Parris also wears a new Patent Paint Lip Lacquer formula in Polished Prize, a luxuriously creamy, vinyl effect gloss that provides instant moisturization and lasts all day. The creative campaign, captured by Karen Inderbitzen-Waller, Delphine Avril Planqueel and video director Pictvre, will appear in-store and across M·A·C New Zealand’s digital channels from February, 2020.
YOUR GUIDE TO GOLDEN GLOBES RED CARPET HAIR LOOKS! Dyson sponsored x 3 hair artists who worked on Tiffany Haddish, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lopez. Here is, their create-the-look techniques and the Dyson tool used. Tiffany Haddish : Hair by Ray Christopher The key to a great look always starts at the shampoo bowl. I started by using the Suave Natural Shea Butter and Pure Coconut Oil Sulfate Free Cleansing Shampoo and followed up with the Moisturising Curl Conditioner. I sectioned the hair into four parts to allow for a quicker and easier dry with my Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition. The Suave Cream Detangling Spray coupled with the Dyson Y-attachment (heat setting: 100 degrees Celsius, speed setting: fast drying) allowed me to properly and gently comb through and blow the hair until I achieved the dryness necessary to move to the next step in styling. Once dry, I used a flat iron to straighten the hair, lifting the root to create the volume needed. A simple cut created the layers necessary to proceed with simple curls using the flat iron. These steps gave me that chic bob style I envisioned for this special night. To complete the glamourous look I simply finished by using Suave Curl Defining Oil! Reese Witherspoon: Hair by Lona Vigi Actress and Golden Globe Award nominee, Reese Witherspoon stunned on the red carpet with a sleek modern bob by celebrity hairstylist, Lona Vigi, using Virtue and Dyson products. To get the look, Vigi prepped Reese’s wet hair with, protein powered hair oil – the first of its kind multitasking treatment oil and reparative
protein in one to protect her strands from heat. Virtue’s Alpha Keratin 60ku powers this unique hair oil to repair while adding shine, taming frizz, and eliminating flyaways. Simply shake the oil to activate a fresh dose with every pump. Next, she blow dried using the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition, directing the hair to go all back on both sides with a bit of height. Vigi followed by flat ironing her whole head and applying another pump of Virtue Healing Oil to add an extra layer of shine. To finish the look, Vigi sprayed the entire style
EVENTS
with VirtueShaping Spray to keep everything in place. Jennifer Lopez: Hair by Chris Appleton “For this look, we did an elegant detailed up-do that gives a queen of the night vibe. The inspiration was an elegant grace Kelly, but the braid made it more modern.” Chris Appleton. Begin prepping the hair with an Anti-Humidity Hair Treatment to create a strong base and add shine. It’s important to use on damp hair and apply the product in sections. Then blow dry the hair using the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition to create a smooth finish. Apply firm and flexible hairspray then blow dry the hair directing it back and away from the place and into a ponytail. Apply gloss treatment throughout the hair and make two braids. Wrap the braid around into a bun, stacking them on top of one another, and secure. Polish the look with the Color Wow extra Mist-ical Shine Spray to create a glossy finish. Then apply the Color Wow Root Cover Up around the hairline for added fullness.
