Once upon a time, there were some pretty ladies who had the power to travel through time. They were Courtesans and cherished some era more than others. Not to worry about anachronisms, Lily Verda composed a wardrobe consisted of beautiful timeless clothes. Black dresses for the chic and fashionable, plays of transparency with lace and hairnets worked to reveal just a little of their body knowing how to remain glamorous. Lily Verda Stylist/Designer

Inspirations For many years I regularly visited Morocco. From the first trip I was bewitched by that country and the three projects studied to date are certainly fed, to varying degrees, by all the images and impressions gathered during my stays. The work of main architects, painters, sculptors, conceptual artists or filmmakers of all periods and all schools have, I guess, more or less important influence on my work.

A detail of a painting by Giorgio de Chirico, the crossing , early on the morning, of Dye baths in Fez, the tracking shot of a film of Orson Wells, the discovery of the Jantar Mantar site in Jaipur can be,for me, a source of inspiration conscious or not. All these impressions we carry, some of them since a very long time, will fit at some point in our work, it’s very mysterious. I find it difficult to establish precisely, for this project, where and when it refers to such or such painter or architect work. That’s why I’m always surprised when an architecture journalist accurately established similarities between my work and that of such artist.

THE FOBE

HOUSE The land is located about ten kilometers south of Marrakech. Flat, mostly drowned under a heat veil that hides horizon. It is only from December to March that the snowy atlas appears In this 2.5 hectares area the buildings occupy only 240m ².

The volumes and their arrangments permit to avoid a floating effect in this empty space. Before discovering the layout we first need to go along the clay walls, which remote the neighbors away while allowing the sight of whites geometries. Once we cross through the metal gate , earth tinted, we are suddenly plunged into a strange world. Three white steles (You can use three white concrete walls or concrete slabs if you prefer). frame and seek the longitudinal axis of the house in the center of the field. On the right side, the Guard house, two mixed cubes, is close to a totem pole fireplace and faces the double garage all in length studded with small openings. These simple elements articulate the vacuum around and focus the eye towards the house itself. Paradoxically simple and complex: a foliation of longitudinals sails between wich stages the project program; tall windows; sets of geometric cutouts; framing, especially from the livingroom across the pool and its bleachers toward the atlas (bleachers: It is like in the ancient Colosseum or gath in Benares ; you can sit on it and climb on the top of them.

rather than the object. A demanding personal commitment to clean space and well lit volumes. A singular universe to be seen and understood. By changing axes and heights, alternating the empty and full, creating a balance of masses, generating light, superimposing surfaces and varying scale, I seek to create a dialogue between these elements in order to compose a complex and singular space to serve the user. To do so, I emerge myself in the project - accompany and carry it - unrelentingly seeking inventive and generous solutions. Constant in my choices and orientations, my projects are inscribed in the continuity of a tradition that responds to the demands of both the environment and society. Respecting the local context without succumbing to folklore, a quest for lasting simplicity.

m Image magazine has been very fortunate to display the great work of photographer Yann Féron in 3 different issues of the magazine. This French photographer now living in New York shares with us his experience and views on images, photography and fashion.

I’m: Why did you decide to do fashion photography? In 2002 or 2003 when I bought the first affordable DSLR a canon REBEL that was 1000$ then it was cheaper to take photos portraits fashion etc....I was doing street photography and my girlfriend at that time was modeling a little bit and when i was doing candid portraits of her she told me I had an eye and that i should be pursuing the area. So I did.

create everything from scratch... you model, you create everything with lights, make up, hair etc... camera angle directing emotions and body of the model you shoot. Photography is plural. Some photography styles are not art for me such as press photography, red carpets photography and runway photography those are not art.... cause every photographer on the pool have the same shot... that is why I don’t do those styles.

I’m: When did you start taking photos?

I guess I started taking photos when I was 6 years old. My mother was teaching me to hold my breath not to get blurry photos! But more seriously, I had my first professional assignment in 1992 for a documentary about ECUADOR. I’m: When did you decide that you would become a professional photographer?

I decided 4 years ago to do it full time giving up my teaching position as sports teacher. But what is being professional? Earning money selling your skills? Then I started doing it 8 years ago in NYC when I started doing fashion.

I’m: What inspires you the most? It all depends, a model, a dress, a pair of shoes, a location, a theme, a music, a music video, but usually I build ideas out of my imagination. I’m: Do you consider photography as an art form? Yes especially when you do fashion cause you

I’m: As a French photographer living in New York what is the difference between the fashion photography in Europe and in America? America is more edgy more labeled. Fashion editorials in USA is about the brands that the models are wearing, when In France its about the mood and the general atmosphere that a model is doing. I’M Image Magazine February 2013

Fashion photography is sexier in USA I feel. Sex sales... and In America, there is cult about the body image. And it reflects on the images that people cherish that aspect. I’m: What makes you decide to come to New York? My love for the city and also it s close to central/ south America. In 2002 I wanted to travel all around Central America to do my photo journalism. Well I travelled a lot through the years to panama Guatemala Mexico Costa Rica Brazil Argentina and some Caribbean islands to complete the list of the 53 countries I visited in my life. I’m: What are your views/ opinions on photography in 2013? Well with the digital time, everyone is a photographer. Many people love photography and I think it’s the easiest media to do. Videography is much more complex. Materials such as lights are way cheaper now and everyone can do photographs in a professional setting. BUT... it’s not because you have a good camera a good material and a good studio that you are a good photographer. How do I recognize a good photographer? Consistency. This is key. A photographer can take an amazing photo with some digital enhancement it s even better, but a great www.imimagemagazine.com

it’s not because you have a good camera, good material and a good studio that you are a good photographer.

photographer will have ten twenty thirty good photos in one set. Years ago I submitted my documentary of MADAGASCAR to GEO magazine, a national geographic –alike magazine in france; to publish 5 images they asked to see ALL the shots I took. They did not want to publish someone who has no consistency in the work. That’s how I understood what it meant. The ratio between good photos and taken photos are important. The final shot is not a validation for me. Professional photography is a business and it s tough to make a living doing it cause amateurs are breaking the field and the rates. It s more difficult since 2008 I feel to convince people to invest in photography for the right budget. Companies cut budgets and people don’t invest it that and many magazines and companies take advantage of us. I’m Image Magagine January issue photography: Yann Feron Model Ashley

EXPOSURE DOES NOT PAY BILLS. At one point I am glad to showcase my work to the medias but it s not a goal. I’m: As a professional what would you say makes a great fashion photo? A good choice of model + a good style + good location. Then comes Hair, stylist and make up. I’m: Do you think you have a style as a photographer and can you describe it? In America people call me cause I have a French style and edge. In Europe they call me the American cause the fashion styles I usually use is too American for them I like to do fashion, high fashion, commercial style, family portrait, candid photos, sexy photos, art nudes, etc... a good week is when I shoot 4 times a week and each time a different style. I don’t think I have a style. I have several. It’s not to me to say. Maybe your readers will be able to tell me. EDGAR DEGAS said ” I am glad I have not found my style yet: I would be bored to death” . Now it is my turn to say it. www.yannferon.com www.yannferonphotography.zenfolio.com www.facebook.com/yannferonphotography www.yannferonstreetart. tumblr.com www.yannferonart.tumblr.com

“Then the day came where the need to search for a new apartment rendered everything else utterly null...”

t was a strange day that led myself to find this apartment I now reside in. I had been living in this dark moderately sized hole, although with amusing warped wood floors and high ceilings, it was a place of endless shadows and sheer boredom for my two fussy model cats. Then the day came where the need to search for a new apartment rendered everything else utterly null. Venturing forth, I wandered down my usual streets in the Plateau area of Montreal and noticed a door left invitingly open to a first floor home. Almost passing the second time while wandering back, but the sunlight had somehow shaded for the moment and I noticed what lay inside. The enticing deep purple wallpaper and 1950s Satie could be made out within the dark entrance were the sirens call to

attempt the door bell. To my surprise a man came to greet me, his surprise equal to find me lingering. Then to my dismay the building was not actually being rented at all, but not because there were no free apartments, just that no one was there to actually be a landlord or a desire to alter the buildings existence. Jonathan as it turned out had been living in one of the large accommodations located on the second section of the weathered building for twenty years. Volunteering to clean out the lower level home that stood empty of tenants, as more a favour to the family. Of course seeing the interior, I longed to beg for a tour, and didn’t even need to ask. It was everything one could have dreamed about. As I followed Jonathan about, he explained that the building was around ninety years old, the same family from start

to end. The husband and wife owners, both doctors having perished a few years before. The sister to the wife had been a Nun in Montreal. The only son Pierre, the inherited landlord, is still undergoing major chemo treatments and a courageous battle against cancer, bout and pulmonary embolism over the next course of months in Quebec City. He is the only surviving member of this family and all hope remained with him so to speak.

“The best way to illustrate what I found could not be described by a few speculative words.” The best way to illustrate what I found could not be described by a few speculative words. Everything that once belonged to these people still was in existence left behind in their home. The wife had an extreme passion for flamingo pink, so her bathroom was all laid out in this fashion,

and even more delightful, the kitchen adorned in pink utilities. It was a moment of discovery that I feel only Howard Carter and George Herbert the first to enter the sealed tomb of Tutankhamun could comprehend. I left that day determined to live in the anomaly despite the bright orange apartment that was free, and found myself walking home with a beautiful purple shirt fifty years old given as a token. But the delight of the aged structure does not simply end there. Sixteen apartments are in the building and only five currently occupied. Naturally I found myself enticed and after much repair, painting, removing of the grotesquely ancient former green carpet and many layers of carpet glue scrapped off with my long singed nails and several bottles of chemicals, I found myself living in my new home. The move in day is a story even longer than this one, of having my phone ‘disappear’ and money stolen backstage at a fashion show while I was on the runway. Ignoring that frustrating day, it turns out since no one had lived in my apartment for seven

years would mean that my water doesn’t run very well, rather just one tap in the kitchen. So I find myself using two apartments on a daily basis, the other on the floor above. Then it came to actually meeting my two neighbours on this side of the three stories. Fernand lives alone on my floor, is 86 and prefers to spend his time walking rather slowly around rue Mont Royal and then

taking a bus back. The thought of living in a residence could not be a more desirable concept for him as to have gum stuck to one’s shoe. nights she will jog, and I walk along with her. Of course the day happened when I stumbled back into Jonathan who was doing more organizing in the house with so many mysteries. Returning to a stack of dresses left at my door, to find that he revisited with more of the collection. The actual landlord Pierre had instructed Jonathan to rid the house of all the clothes and junk about for the convenience since well nothing was used any longer. Jonathan was currently employing a large collection of the dresses for a movie he was shooting in the end of October. I had seen him once or twice from my balcony emerge from the basement with a van driving off with a load destined to one of Montreal’s small boutiques for the vintage lovers. Now I was to understand why I had seen his hands so black. Being granted, I finally accompanied him down into the basement. It was a tiny secret entrance found in a closet that was adorned with at least three hundred boxes of women’s shoes all ranging from the 1940s-1980s. This was not www.imimagemagazine.com

Some to my astonishment were made by the Nun whom apparently crafted on her spare time with her sister. Each piece patterned and cut after the Montreal styling, including Eaton’s guidebooks that were stacked about in the basement not far from their intended creations. It’s not even this what I love most about this building, it was realizing the actual importance that this home meant for its few dwellers. For my 86 year old neighbour, it was to be his final

discover myself waking in a real Finnish style sauna, convenient for my new collection of summer dresses. freedom, although alone it is still his. Gracie, cherishes her apartment and would refuse a trip to anywhere in the world being so content with her surroundings. bricks. Especially when Fernand disappeared one early morning and a search party was set up immediately, turning up later to everyone’s relief and the aid of flirtatious police. As enticing as this tale is to the many that I have related it to, the treasures hidden below my feet will remain concealed to those, to speak brashly

‘outsiders’. Although it is not up to me to say that these secrets do not belong to anyone in particular, as much is being given away. But of course I am still hesitant to plunder its wealth of memories and delights that would bring most fashionistas, historians and passionate dreamers to their knees. Preservation has been the largest foundation for this buildings still unspoiled existence somewhere in the Plateau of Montreal.
