ALL ABOUT HENDERSON COUNTY The Beautiful Communities of Henderson County, North Carolina Fletcher, Flat Rock, Hendersonville, Mills River, Laurel Park, and Area Communities
Henderson County History Henderson County was part of the Cherokee Nation for 10,000 years. After treaties with the Cherokee in 1777 and 1785, the land was officially opened for settlement by early Appalachian Mountain pioneers. Early land grants date back to 1777, with most occurring after the Revolutionary War in 1783 and 1785. Early settlers included Revolutionary War Patriots, such as Andrew Miller, Matthew Maybin and Joseph Henry, along with many others. Some Tories, such as William Mills, also settled in the county in the 1780s. Henderson County was named for Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, Judge Leonard Henderson who died in 1833, five years before the county was created. Henderson County was created from Old Buncombe County and Rutherford County. Hendersonville received its original charter in the 1840’s with a population of several hundred people. The county of Henderson is called a typical mountain county, because it consists of these elements: mountain ranges, isolated peaks, a rolling plateau and level valley areas. Elevations range from 1400 feet near Bat Cave at the foot of the Blue Ridge, to 5000 feet on Little Pisgah. Henderson County is located on a intermountain plateau and is almost circled by mountains. To the west, the county touches the Pisgah Ledge, and to the east and south borders the Blue Ridge and Saluda Mountains. The county is bordered on the north side by Buncombe county, to the east by Rutherford and Polk counties, to the west by Transylvania county and to the south by South Carolina. The first source of revenue was agriculture for the people of Henderson County. The settlers grew corn, wheat, rye, potatoes and cabbage. As the self-sustaining pioneer settlers entered the county, they brought fruit trees with them. Hendersonville had easy access from the lowlands and quickly became a vacation destination for tourists to spend the summer months to escape the sweltering heat, for a milder, cooler climate. Historic Hendersonville has been welcoming guests for more than a century, thus creating a strong tourism based industry. This basic economy held up after World War II. Today’s economy is based on tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and retirement.

Celebrating the
Coming of the Railroad
T
he Apple Valley Model Railroad Club and the Henderson County Heritage Museum have come together to kick-off the Golden Age Exhibit: Coming of the Railroad at the Historic Courthouse in Downtown Hendersonville. In partnership with the Henderson County Heritage Museum, the Model Railroad Club has created a scale model diorama of the Saluda grade and the route from Melrose to Hendersonville. The exhibit will include the railroad heritage of Henderson County with railroad memorabilia, videos and photographs. The interactive display will be opening May 18, 2013 and continue through 2014. A live model train will be running near the ceiling and a recreation of the Carolina Special, which ran through Henderson County from 1911 until 1968. The first steam engine puffed up the Saluda Grade to the Hendersonville Depot in 1879. The steam engine needed a “help engine” attached to the rear of the train at Melrose for additional power to push the train up the Saluda Mountain Grade, the steepest main-line standard gauge railroad in the United States. The Carolina Special ran between Charleston, South Carolina and Cincinnati, Ohio from 1911 until 1968. The coming of the railroad bridged the gap between the South Carolina seaport to Western North Carolina. Tourism began to boom in Henderson County when the families of South Carolina’s Low Coun-
try started coming to the Blue Ridge Mountains for the cooler summer climate and to escape the sweltering heat. South Carolina’s Low Country gentry affectionately called Flat Rock The Little Charleston of the Mountains. During the heyday of rail passenger service, six trains a day stopped in Hendersonville. Today the depot is the home of the 70-member Apple Valley Model Railroad Club and its large HO-scale model train layout as well as the 7th Avenue Business Association. The layout measures 100 feet by 18 feet and fills three large rooms. The layout incorporates over 2000 feet of track and 225 switches allowing trains to travel to examples of Hendersonville, Asheville, Valdese, Marion, Black Mountain and other area towns. The club layout also includes depictions of sawmill logging operations, the paper mill at Canton, the large Asheville rail yard including the roundhouse, an operating turntable, and the Saluda grade. A highlight for young children is an operating Thomas the Tank Engine layout featuring Thomas and Emily chugging proudly over the track! Visiting children operate the trains. This popular display is part of the club’s continuing
efforts to actively promote the hobby of model railroading to people of all ages. The Historic Train Depot is open year round, Wednesdays 1:00pm-3:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am-2:00pm. The Depot is located on Maple Street off of 7th Avenue East. Admission is free, donations appreciated. For information or special visit arrangements call (828) 890-8246. www.avmrc.com The Henderson County Heritage Museum brings history alive as the story of Henderson County is told. The Museum is housed in the Historic Henderson County Courthouse on Main Street. It offers public displays, artifacts, lectures, collections, archives, libraries, demonstrations, and other similar exhibitions relating to the history, culture, heritage and story of the founding settlement and development of Henderson County. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse was built in 1904 and designed by Richard Sharp Smith, the supervising architect of Biltmore House. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse was built of brick in a neoclassical revival style featuring six Corinthian columns on the front and four columns for each of the two side porticos. The focal point of the Courthouse is atop of the copper dome, a 6-foot statue of “Lady Justice.” The statue is the Greek goddess Themis (“The Greek Goddess of Divine Justice and Law”) who is without a blindfold, holding a sword in her right hand and scales in her left. It is believed to be only one of only three in the United States without a blindfold, statues of Themis/Justice are blindfolded to typify that Justice should be impartial. The Museum hours are Wednesday Saturday from 10:00AM - 5:00 PM and Sunday 1:00PM - 5:00PM. For more information call 828-694-1619 or visit www.hendersoncountymuseum.com

The Hunger Games Filming of Hunger Games Major Motion Picture
Bridal Veil - is ab out one mile upstream from High Fa lls on the Little River, and is probably the mo st unique. It drops eight feet off an overh anging ledge, then the water sheets down a long inclined plane of granite. Scen es from The Hunger Game and Last of the Mohicans were also filmed here. Many scenes from the movie, The Hunger Games, were shot in Dupont State Recreational Forest. The Hunger Games were filmed entirely in North Carolina. Set in the not-too-distant future in which North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. The games are part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation, with participants forced to fight to the death — with only one survivor. The filming at Triple Falls in DuPont State Recreational Forest is the location of the lush forest, rivers and the trees shooting out fire during the games. DuPont State Recreational Forest is home to some of the most beautiful water-
falls in Western North Carolina, including Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Hooker Falls. Fans of The Hunger Games will flock to Dupont State Recreational Forest to see to lush forest and spectacular waterfalls. The film was also shot in other nearby cities of Asheville, Shelby and Charlotte. Experience the movie by touring the scenes from the movie, which was shot on the Western part in North Carolina. Take the Hunger Games four-day itinerary, which loops from Charlotte to Asheville and back, see film locations, choice star hangouts and sites that connect to elements of the Suzanne Collins novel.
The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources manages the forest. For additional information call 828-877-6527 High Falls parking lot, 1300 Staton Rd, Cedar Mountain, NC. GPS Coordinates: 35.18856,-82.632936 www.ncforestservice.gov

At a Glance About Mills River Area The Town of Mills River - Mills River was named for the river that flows through the community and has been inhabited since the 1700’s, making it the oldest community in Henderson County. The first person to own land here received a deed from the state in 1787. Many families of early settlers still live in Mills River. The town was once known as the “fertile crescent” because of its agricultural community and was once considered the seat of public education in the county. Mills River has a variety of topography offering some of the greatest biking and hiking trails in the state. There’s excellent fishing at North Mills River Recreation Area - the Henderson County entry to Pisgah National Forest. RV and tent camping areas are available as well as primitive camping throughout the Pisgah Forest. The river runs right through the park making tubing one of the most popular activities for kids. There are large expanses of green space for a pick-up game of football or tag and picnic tables are available for individuals or groups. There are beautiful woodsy areas in which to stroll, walk or run or just kick back for a nap after lunch. Lodging establishments in the area range from bed and breakfast, cabins and cottages and pet friendly environments. Amenities such as shopping, specialty shops & restaurants are conveniently located within a short drive. The Asheville Regional Airport and access to Interstates I-26 and I-40 are nearby the Mills River Area. .

N.C. Apple Festival Labor Day Weekend August 30 September 2, 2013
Downtown Hendersonville & Surrounding Area
Historic Hendersonville is the official home of the 67th Annual North Carolina Apple Festival, a four-day celebration in honor of the North Carolina Apple. The NC Apple Festival features a street fair on Historic Main Street including continuous live musical entertainment, arts & crafts, apple growers selling apple products, children’s & youth activities, special exhibits & open houses, food, and, to top it all off, on Labor Day, the King Apple Parade. Capture the spirit of a hometown celebration that has something for the whole family, with many individual events and entertainers throughout the festival. The festival is held annually, during the Labor Day weekend.
The Apple Festival’s Street Fair covers 9 blocks of Main Street with more than 150 vendors. Main Street is closed to traffic from 6th Avenue to Caswell Street. On Monday the Street Fair is scaled back to a mini-festival located between Second Avenue - Caswell Street. The highlight of Labor Day is King Apple Parade filled with floats, bands, clowns, antique cars, fire engines and more travelling down Main Street from 5 Points to Caswell Street.

Unique Sights You Can’t Miss! Jump Off Rock Jump Off Rock offers spectacular scenic mountain views and photographic opportunities during all four seasons of the year.
Jump Off Rock is a scenic overlook which provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures, the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges. Jump Off Rock also holds an Indian legend that has been passed down for many, many years. Over 300 years ago a young Cherokee Indian Chief fell in love with a fair Indian maiden. They often met on top of the rock ledge overlooking the valley below. When the young Chief was called to war, the maiden promised him that she would wait for his return from their favorite rock ledge. When the maiden received word that her young Indian Chief had been killed in battle, she climbed to the edge of the rock and jumped off, tribal hunters found her broken body below. Indian legend has it that on moonlit nights you can see the ghost of the maiden on Jump Off Rock. Jump Off is located about 5 miles from downtown at the end of Laurel Park Hwy in the Town of Laurel Park. Directions from downtown Hendersonville take Fifth Avenue West, it becomes Laurel Park Highway, the road dead ends at Jump Off Rock. The park is open daily, sunrise to sunset. No admission charge.
The Old Home Place - Music Barn A fun and friendly venue where country music is performed Friday & Saturday nights, 7:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Thomas Wolfe’s Angel Author Thomas Wolfe’s first novel was Look Homeward, Angel. In the book there are constant references to an angel statue carved from Italian marble. This is the angel Wolfe placed in American literature. Thomas Wolfe’s father, W.O. Wolfe, sold the statue to the Johnson family to mark the family plot in Oakdale Cemetery. The angel is holding a lily in her left hand and extending her right hand upward. Oakdale Cemetery is located on Hwy. 64 W., just a short distance from downtown. The statue is protected by a wrought iron fence, and there is a historical marker located on the highway.
Historic Henderson County Courthouse The Courthouse was built in 1904 to replace to first courthouse, which was built on the same site in 1842. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse, (1905) was designed by Richard Sharp Smith, the supervising architect of Biltmore House. The Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 1979. The Historic Henderson County Courthouse is located on Main Street between First & Second Avenues.
