The perfect balance of 100% natural ingredients.
Our chewy, naturally sweet, Makala treats start with slices or a puree of gently dehydrated (to preserve the nutrients), hand-picked, selected, highland bananas, grown in the rich volcanic soil of our own farm near the Turrialba Volcano. We use a smaller, sweeter, more delicate banana than the tough-skinned, high production Cavendish variety so prevalent in supermarkets. The dominant flavor is then obtained by adding to this smooth, sweet, banana base the appropriate amount of another fruit or vegetable: passion fruit, guava, uchuva, beet, carrot and ginger, etc.

El balance perfecto de productos 100% naturales. Nuestras productos Makala, tanto los Snacks como el producto para Food Service, son naturalmente dulces, ya que tienen como base puré de banano. Es cultivado en tierras altas en el rico suelo volcánico de nuestra propia finca cerca del Volcán Turrialba. Es cosechados a mano, seleccionados, Utilizamos un banano más pequeño, más dulce y más delicado que la variedad Cavendish de piel dura y alta producción que prevalece en los supermercados. El sabor dominante se obtiene al agregar a esta suave y dulce base de banano, la cantidad apropiada de otra fruta o verdura: maracuyá, guayaba, uchuva, remolacha, zanahoria y jengibre, etc. Lleva un proceso cuidadoso de deshidratación para preservar los nutrientes de la mezcla.
MACHO ANDRE
History, and the future. All bananas used in MAKALA products come from our farm (www.lostitoscoffeefarm.com), located on the hillsides west of Turrialba, in the province of Cartago, Costa Rica. Originally a family owned dairy farm, the bananas were first planted on the farm by Andre Helfenberger (1932-2016) who bought the farm from his father-in-law and converted it to a coffee plantation, using the banana trees to provide the required shade for the coffee plants. Andre Helfenberger, a Swiss agronomist born in St. Gallen, Gossau, was sent to Costa Rica by the Nestle company in 1959 to research Cocoa at the Interamerican Institute for Agricultural Cooperation (IICA), located in Turrialba. After marrying, establishing a family, and becoming an independent small farmer, el macho AndrÊ put into practice his lifelong enthusiasm for diversified, sustainable agriculture, intermixing coffee, bananas, and tamarillos in the same fields to increase income stability from multiple crops while reducing the need for pesticide applications by avoiding the plant concentrations common to intensive agricultural practice. Margarita, Andre’s wife, seeking to make full use of farm production, began dehydrating the bananas which quickly became popular with
family and friends, progressing from there to supplying a convenience store chain belonging to friends of the family. Now under management by a third generation, the diversification of the farm has increased to include passionfruit, acerola cherry, guava and increased banana production, and the farm is in the process of converting all possible areas to exclusively organic practice, also using organic fertilizer produced on the farm. New products have been developed, and processing is done in a small but professional plant, maintaining strict standards of innocuity and uniformity with personnel trained with the help of INA (the National Trade School) and TEC (Costa Rican Institute of Technology). With distribution of five products now established in Costa Rica through a premium supermarket chain, under their private label, the next milestone is to export to Europe and USA. PROCOMER, the Costa Rican national agency in charge of promoting exports is providing valuable assistance covering branding, packaging, labeling, logistics, traceability, etc.
PLANTA PRODUCCIÓN TURRIALBA
Historia y el futuro. Todas las bananas utilizadas en los productos MAKALA provienen de nuestra finca(www.lostitoscoffeefarm.com), ubicada en las laderas al oeste de Turrialba, en la provincia de Cartago, Costa Rica. Originalmente una finca lechera de propiedad familiar. André Helfenberger (1932-2016) sembró los bananos en la finca por primera vez quien compró la finca a su suegro y la convirtió en una plantación de café, utilizando las plantas de bananos para proporcionar la sombra necesaria a los siembros de café. André Helfenberger, un agrónomo suizo nacido en St. Gallen, Gossau, fue enviado a Costa Rica por la empresa Nestlé en 1959 para investigar el cacao en el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación Agrícola (IICA), ubicado en Turrialba. Después de casarse, establecer una familia y convertirse en un pequeño agricultor independiente, el macho André puso en práctica su entusiasmo de por vida por una agricultura diversificada y sostenible, entremezclando café, bananos y tamarillos, en los mismos campos para aumentar la estabilidad de ingresos de múltiples cultivos al tiempo que reduce la necesidad de aplicaciones de pesticidas evitando las concentraciones de plantas comunes a la práctica agrícola intensiva. Margarita, la esposa de André, que buscaba aprovechar al máximo la producción agrícola, comenzó a deshidratar los bananos, que
rápidamente se hicieron populares con familiares y amigos, progresando desde allí hasta el suministro de una cadena de tiendas de conveniencia que pertenece a amigos de la familia. Ahora bajo la gestión de una tercera generación, la diversificación de la finca ha aumentado para incluir maracuyá, acerola, guayaba, uchuva y una mayor producción de banano, y la finca está en el proceso de convertir todas las áreas posibles en prácticas exclusivamente orgánicas, también usando fertilizantes orgánicos producidos en la finca. Se han desarrollado nuevos productos y el proceso industrial se realiza en una planta pequeña pero profesional, manteniendo estrictos estándares de inocuidad y uniformidad con personal capacitado con la ayuda de INA (Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje) y TEC (InstitutoTecnológico de Costa Rica). Con la distribución de seis productos ahora establecidos en Costa Rica a través de una cadena de supermercados premium, el próximo hito es exportar a Europa y EE. UU. Y Canadá. PROCOMER, la institución costarricense encargada de promover las exportaciones, brinda asistencia valiosa para la marca, el empaque, el etiquetado, la logística, la trazabilidad, etc.
