In a 2010 study, cats were ranked the thirdmost popular pet in the UK after fish and dogs, with around 8 million being owned.

meow, meow, meow~ (Tompok,1997)

at (Felis catus, or Felis silvestris catus, literally “woodland cat”), often referred to as the domestic cat to distinguish from other felids and felines, is a small, typically furry, carnivorous mammal. It is often called house cat when kept as indoor pet or feral/feral domestic cat when wild. It is often valued by humans for companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin. There are more than seventy cat breeds recognized by various cat registries. Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with a strong flexible body, quick reflexes, sharp teeth and retractable claws adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals.

They can see in near darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans. Cats, despite being solitary hunters, are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (mewing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as cat pheromones and types of cat-specific body language. Cats are thought to be primarily responsible for the extinction of 87 species of birds, and the presence of feral and free-ranging cats makes some otherwise suitable locations unsuitable for attempted species reintroduction. As of a 2007 study, cats are the second-most popular pet in the 18 U.S. by number of pets owned, after freshwater fish.

PARIS T

he Eiffel Tower is a wrought iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Constructed from 1887–1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair, it was initially criticized by some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world; 6.91 million people ascended it in 2015. The tower is 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building, and the tallest structure in Paris. Its base is square, measuring 125 metres (410 ft) on each side. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York City was finished in 1930. Due to the addition of a broadcasting aerial at the top of the tower in 1957, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building by 5.2 metres (17 ft). Excluding transmitters, the Eiffel Tower is the second tallest free-standing structure in France after the Millau Viaduct.

19

This was signed by Eiffel acting in his own capacity rather than as the representative of his company, and granted him 1.5 million francs toward the construction costs: less than a quarter of the estimated 6.5 million francs.

T

he goal of the Apple Watch was to enhance the uses of an iPhone by using a watch. Kevin Lynch was brought on by Apple to make wearable technology for the wrist. He said: “People are carrying their phones with them and looking at the screen so much. People want that level of engagement. But how do we provide it in a way that’s a little more human, a little more in the moment when you’re with somebody?”The Apple Watch works by connecting via Bluetooth to the phone and accessing any Watch compatible apps stored on the mobile device. Apple’s development process was held very much under wraps until a Wired article revealed how some internal design decisions were made.

LONDON: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE THAT I HAVE VISITED IN EUROPE

L

By: Wan Izyan Hani

ondon is a very important city in Europe. Many Europeans say it is probably the most beautiful city in Europe. People can go to this place in order to see the monuments as the Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace. But also they would discover this cosmopolitan place with all of nationalities that are represented in this town. Finally they would enjoy the arts, the music, sports, and the languages that are spoken. Everybody has to know the amazing London monuments as Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the 10 Downing Street. Buckingham Palace is very nice because of the architecture of this house. The architecture of this house is so beautiful to see. Moreover there is the Tower Bridge in London. If people go to London, they will share a good time with their friends or family close to the River Thames. Next people must go to see Big Ben. Basically, it is the most famous clock in the world. female girls power

A 2001 update to the Oxford English Dictionary defined girl power as: Power exercised girls; spec. a self-reliant attitude among girls and young women manifested in ambition, assertiveness, and individualism. Although also used more widely (esp. as a slogan), the term has been particularly and repeatedly associated with popular music; most notably in the early 1990s with the briefly prominent “riot grrrl” movement in the United States. The slogan has also been examined within the context of the academic field. Media theorist Kathleen Rowe Karlyn in her article “Scream, Popular Culture, and Feminism’s Third Wave: I’m Not My Mother” and Irene Karras in “The Third Wave’s Final girl: Buffy the Vampire Slayer” suggest a link with third-wave feminism. Frances Early and Kathleen Kennedy in the introduction to Athena’s Daughters: Television’s New Women Warriors, discuss what they describe as a link between girl power and a “new” image of women warriors in popular culture. by: Annis Hafifah Hashim

Information About Roses by Haliza Rahiman

O

ne of the more frustrating things that can happen in rose beds is to have a nice big bud or buds open to a bloom with black or crispy edged petals. This article can help explain why there are black edges on rose petals and what, if anything, can be done about it. We watch excitedly as those nice big buds develop, and just when they open up, the edges of the petals go to black or a dark crispy brown. Why does this happen and what can we do about it Frost More often than not, this condition is caused by either Jack Frost kissing the rose blooms early or late in the season. That frosty kiss creates a burn on those delicate petal edges. There is no way for the rose bush, on its own, to move enough moisture to those extreme petal edges to stop the freeze burn effects, thus resulting in edges of rose petals turning black. If a frost is coming, cover the roses with an old blanket or towels. I recommend using some support stakes driven into the ground around the roses and then applying such covers. Otherwise, the weight of the cover or a cover that has become wet may break off some of the buds. Sun

The same holds true for those hot summer days with the intense rays of the sun beating down on the roses. Again, the rose, on its own, cannot defend itself against the sun’s attack, so black tips on roses may appear, effectively cooking them. That said, I would not recommend doing this on hot, humid days when the evening temps just will not cool off, as it then may increase the chances of a fungal attack. In these times, watering the rose bushes at their base is best. ppears as gray mold on the buds, Read more at Gardening Know How: Why Rose Petals Have Black Edges: Troubleshooting Black Tips On Roses https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/roses/black-edges-on-roses.htm 24

Malayan tiger population plunges to just 250340 individuals By: Anis Syazwani

M

alaysia is on the edge of losing its tigers, and the world is one step nearer to losing another tiger subspecies: the Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni). Camera trap surveys from 2010-2013 have estimated that only 250-340 Malayan tigers remain, potentially a halving of the previous estimate of 500 individuals. In 2008, Malaysia committed to doubling its tiger population to 1,000 animals by 2020. But a statement from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) and the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tiger (MYCAT) admits that may now be impossible. “With the new estimate in 2014, that target may now be unachievable in this timeframe,” the groups. Wildlife biologists surveyed tiger populations across seven sites in three known tiger habitats in the country using camera traps, but came up with far fewer tigers than hoped for. Still, more surveys in other sites are needed to come up with a harder number. Currently, the Malayan tiger subspecies—which was first formally recognized in 2004 after genetic tests—is listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. But PERHILITAN and MYCAT believes the status may have to be changed to Critically Endangered given the recent estimates. According to the groups, the Malayan tiger is most threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. Tiger parts are in high demand in many parts of Asia for traditional medicine and poaching has decimated the species for centuries across its wide range.

But the Malayan tiger is also threatened by the “loss and fragmentation of forests,” according to the groups. Indeed, Malaysia has the highest rate of forest loss in the world from 2000-2012, according to Global Forest Change. During those 12 years, the country lost 14.4 percent of its forest cover from a 2000 bench-line. In all the country lost an area of forest larger than Denmark during that time: 47,278 square kilometers (18,244 square miles). Malaysia is one of the world’s biggest supplier of palm oil, which has been blamed for replacing rainforests with monoculture plantations for decades. Tiger range states have pledged to double global tiger populations by 2022—the next Year of the Tiger—to at least 6,000 animals. But despite this unprecedented international agreement, ambitious pledges, and millions in funding, tigers continue to struggle to maintain present populations, let alone bounce back worldwide. Today, there are thought to be around 3,000-4,000 tigers in the wild, less than the number held in captivity in the U.S. Around half of those tigers are found in India. Already, three tiger subspecies have been lost to extinction: the Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica), the Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata), and the Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica). Of the remaining six tiger subspecies, two are currently listed as Critically Endangered: the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and the South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis). The latter is probably extinct in the wild and is represented by just over 70 animals in captivity, including an ambitious project in South Africa with hopes to re-wild the subspecies back to its native habitat

oyal Chanel muse Kristen Stewart is the face of the brand’s “Paris in Rome” Metiers d’Art collection, shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself. The campaign showcases the pre-fall 2016 collection that premiered in December at the Metiers d’Art show in Rome, the latest in Chanel’s series of globetrotting presentations. Echoing the theme of both the collection and show, Stewart appears as a seductive Italian actress in her Parisian apartment sporting pre-fall looks provocatively paired with lace tights. To Lagerfeld, Stewart “is perfect for the Chanel image of today,” he told WWD. And the adoration is mutual. The actress praised how the designer “always provides an environment for a story to unfold,” calling his guidance “felt and inspiring.” Most recently, Stewart and Lagerfeld collaborated on Once and Forever, a short film biopic where the actress plays Coco Chanel.

Malaysia’s National Flower: Hibiscus

L

ower measures from 5 to 14 cm broad. How the hibiscus, dubbed the Queen of Tropical Flowers, was crowned Malaysia’s national flower is a story that is seldom told, so read on…

Why the Hibiscus? After receiving independence in 1957, the nation needed a national flower to symbolize her identity. In 1958, the Ministry of Agriculture sought proposals for a national flower from all state governments. Seven flowers were proposed. They were the rose, ylang ylang, jasmine, lotus, hibiscus, frangipani and bunga tanjung. The people in the east coast states of the country preferred the rose, while those in the west coast were partial towards the jasmine. In 1960, after careful consideration, the ministry selected the hibiscus rosa sinensis. One reason it upstaged the other flowers was its eyecatching, bigger-sized red petals. Another reason given was that it blooms throughout the year and the plant requires little maintenance. Hibiscus is also commonly found in the rural areas where the plant functions as hedge fencing for houses. Since then, the hibiscus has inspired the logos for several events, such as the Kuala Lumpur 98 XVI Commonwealth Games and Visit Malaysia Year 2007. It is also the logo for Tourism Malaysia.

Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul

More than just pretty flower

Besides being an ornamental plant, the hibiscus is also utilized for medicinal purposes. Hibiscus tea is a popular health beverage in Jamaica and Mexico for reducing high blood pressure. Ayurveda physicians in India use the hibiscus to treat hair loss, while in the Philippines, hibiscus roots are used as an aperitif and tonic. Also, the Xhosa of South Africa dress septic wounds with hibiscus leaves. Hibiscus juice, commonly called roselle, is available in many supermarkets nationwide. In Kuala Lumpur, to make up for the lack of hibiscus in public parks, the City Hall has set up the Hibiscus Garden in Perdana Botany Park as a showcase for public enjoyment. The 0.9-hectare garden takes you through a kaleidoscope of colours with its thousands of species of flowers. Expect to see red, beige, pink, white, yellow, orange and purple blooms as you stroll along footpaths of ruddy brickwork that wind around the slope of a hillock. At the summit of the hillock, you can take a breather under a gazebo with spurting fountains, and nearby is a small café which doubles as an art gallery.

A Mermaid and A Magic Comb

A mermaid is a mythical creature that is half woman and half

fish. The name comes from ‘mer’ meaning sea. The male version is called a merman. Although some mermaids are described as monstrous and ugly, they are more usually very beautiful. Above the waist they appear as a lovely young woman, whilst from the waist down, they are like a fish with fins and a spreading tail. Mermaids like to comb their long hair. In art, they are often shown with a mirror and a comb. Sometimes they sit on a rock and sing, luring sailors to their destruction. This is why they are often confused with sirens (who also inhabit the sea). Mermaids lure handsome young men to their homes in the deep seas. Mermen, however, are usually wilder and uglier than mermaids and have little interest in humans. All sea-faring cultures have mermaid tales. In the Breton ballads there are the ‘Morgan’, sea-women, and ‘Morverch’, sea-daughters; in Ireland and Scotland there are ‘Merrow’. The Aegean Sea, it seems, was full of such creatures. In Greek legends there are mermaids that can sink ships and sirens that lure sailors to their doom. In a silvery cave, live the golden haired Nereids or sea nymphs that helped sailors fighting perilous storms. They are depicted as human from the head to the waist, with either a bird’s body or a fishes tail. Other sea dwellers from Greek legend include the 3000 Oceanids, the daughters of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys..

Similar creatures live in lakes and rivers. In Slavic mythology there are the Rusalki, the spirits of young women who have met their fate through drowning. They appear in the form of beautiful fish-women or mermaids. They have lovely hair, fine features but sad fathomless eyes which tell their tragic tale. They entrance young men, taking them to the river floor to live with them. It was always considered most unlucky to do anything unkind to Mermaids. Often in stories, they fail to thrive if brought onto land. The exception to this is the Merrow who sometimes marry humans. Mermaids live for a very long time but, according to some legends, do not have a soul. Legends of half-human, half-fish creatures go back thousands of years. Everyone has seen pictures of mermaids. Sightings were made by the early Arabs and the Greek Pliny in 586 A.D. Many medieval sailors claimed to have seen them and such reports continued right into the 1900’s. Most sightings by sailors were probably normal marine creatures, such as manatees, dugongs, or seacows (now extinct). By: Nurul Emilyana

Jude Law Shines As Dumbledore! BY: FARIDAH DAHALAN

Jude Law was a fantastic choice to be the young Albus Dumbledore. His scenes were the best parts of the film, especially those which brought us back inside the hallowed walls of Hogwarts when Dumbledore was still a Professor of the Dark Arts. It was nostalgic to watch another lesson about the Riddikulus spell, or see that Quidditch pitch in the bac kground. We all certainly missed the beloved musical score in the cinema, and it was great to hear again. 31

SWEATERS You Can Wear In Malaysian Weather

Just a few weeks ago we were sweltering in the heat and couldn’t think of anything better than staying indoors with our air-conditioners onfull blast. In fact, any venture outside could only be done if we were in easy breezy shorts.

GO BIG AND STAY HOME

Drapy sweaters are comfortable, they look good and they feel good, so they will give you life. Something in a neutral tone will match with anything. Take cues here and wear with jodhpurs.

Fast forward to today and much like our friends in the West, it seems like we’re undergoing the closest thing we’re going to get to fall weather. While the rainy days aren’t nearly cold enough for us to whip out scarves or kneehigh boots , it definitely is a lot chillier than what us tropical folk are used to.

REIMAGINE

uietly, bit by bit, I have noticed that two things happen when you live through an era of rapid change, as we are now. Firstly, there is an inevitable surge of artistic creativity and second the misfits, the contrarians, the underdogs and the anti-heroes come into their own. We witness the rise of the rebel: those who don’t play by the normal rules, who flourish in chaotic, unpredictable times and welcome uncertainty without fear. This new-look September issue of ELLE is dedicated to those people, the curious revolutionaries who think differently.

Reinventing this modern magazine, with its five unique and collectable covers, has been an epic project. It’s been an unstoppable (and frankly, emotional) roller coaster for us as we reimagined every single page and every single shoot.

We’ve made a bolder, braver magazine to celebrate them and give these important, varied new voices a place to talk about who they are and what they stand for. I am incredibly proud of what the ELLE team has created and curated on the pages that follow, and this issue is one of the highlights of my career as Editor-in-Chief. From our interview with transgender model Hari Nef (p230) to Kenya Hunt’s piece The Age Of The Contrarian (p188), we have shone the spotlight on inspiring people who I hope will provoke stimulating debates.

How To Be A good Traveler By NajwaRosdi

Traveling

is kind of like life, except it happens someplace else. You wake up. You eat. You go out and see things, do things. And you meet people; some of them you get along with, some you do not. Then you eat again and go to sleep. Travel and traveler are not so much words as they are patterns, abstractions, audio Rorschach Tests.

Tips

1. Question your reasons for travel. Is the Eiffel Tower more important than experiencing French culture? Is San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge more important than a

2. Enjoy the surprises of less popular cities in popular country. It’s not difficult to identify the destinations that experience over tourism. They are, essentially, the most popular destinations in the world.

3. Stay outside the centre of the most popular cities. If you are determined to go to Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong and consider staying outside the city center. You will likely save money, and you will be able to get into the city center easily as most major cities have great public transit.

39

4. Be especially respectful in cities experiencing over tourism. As more people travel, the really popular ities experience more damage to public spaces, struggle with more demand for electricity and water and endure more stress on the infrastructure than was planned for.

M

r and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere. The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it. They didn’t think they could bear it if anyone found out about the Potters. Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursley’s sister, but they hadn’t met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn’t have a sister, because her sister and her good-fornothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be. The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but they had never even seen him. This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn’t want Dudley mixing with a child like that. When Mr. and Mrs. Dursley woke up on the dull, gray Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things would soon be happening all over the country. Mr. Dursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work, and Mrs. Dursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled a screaming Dudley into his high chair. None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the window. At half past eight, Mr. Dursley picked up his briefcase, pecked Mrs. Dursley on the cheek, and tried to kiss Dudley good-bye but missed, because Dudley was now having a tantrum and throwing his cereal at the walls. “Little tyke,” chortled Mr. Dursley as he left the house. He got into his car and backed out of number four’s drive.
