Reliable Cold Chain Infrastructure is Critical for the Success of the Vaccines Industry Vaccines are temperature sensitive biological products that can become less effective or even ineffective if they are exposed to light or temperatures beyond their permissible range (+2°C to +8°C). Vaccines are a cost-effective solution for numerous diseases and are currently generating savings worth billions of dollars in the healthcare system every year. The global vaccines market grew at a CAGR of nearly 10% during 2007-2014 and is expected to reach values worth US$ 55 Billion by 2020. The production of vaccines is currently concentrated within Europe, North America and a few Asian countries, its consumption, however, is diversified across the globe. Vaccines are currently being exported from a few manufacturing countries to the whole world. Since the movement of vaccines depend upon the controlled and uncompromised transfer of shipments, this is creating a huge demand for efficient cold chain logistics services in the global vaccines industry. Vaccines are temperature sensitive biological products that can become less effective or even ineffective if they are exposed to light or temperatures beyond their permissible range (+2°C to +8°C). At low temperature of 0°C or below, vaccines can experience an immediate loss of their potency followed by freezing. Vaccines may not appear frozen but can be easily damaged at very low temperatures. Similarly, when vaccines are exposed to higher temperatures, they may reduce some of their potency which is cumulative, permanent and irreversible with repeated exposures. Such failures in the storage and transportation of vaccines may result in their reduced supply, significant losses and a re-occurrence of vaccines preventable diseases. Inefficient storage and transportation may also result in the cancellation of immunization clinics, revaccination of people who have received an ineffective vaccine and a great loss of public confidence in vaccines and the healthcare systems. Thus, in order to insure that vaccines arrive at their intended destination without becoming compromised, it is essential to maintain a secure cold chain throughout their storage, handling and transportation. 3
