doodle complete and utter randomness. My notebooks would be bombarded with random little

doodles mixed with scribbled critique notes. ▶ [ MY STORY ] “Killing Monsters” started out with a bunch of personal doodles I’ve done throughout the years. Some doodles are random and some are relevant to my everyday life. During my last semester as a Graphic Design student, I realized that there was a connection between my doodles and my design process. Projects are essentially my monsters. Monsters can be scary, monsters can be tricky, monsters can be loud, quiet, gruesome and rather beautiful. Some monsters need a lot of attention, some just need just need a little sprucing up and a slight revamp. ▶ [ CONCLUSION ] Throughout my years at Academy of Art University, I’ve learned how to overcome these monsters with the combination of typography, whitespace, imagery, compositions, contrast, and the development and execution of a concept. Though every monster is different, every monster needs tender, love and care.

Who’s that knocking on Death’s Door?

[ TERM ] Sprin g 2013 [ DUR ATIO N ] Five W e eks

▲ [ PROBLEM ] Oh no! It’s a gin-drinking monster! In order to vanquish this monster I need

to create a new application graphics for Death’s Door Gin. The evolutionary design will

[ INSTRUCTOR ] T h o m as M cN ulty

maintain the current bottle shape, including front and back labels. The revolutionary

[ PRO JECT ] D e at h’s D o or Gin

design will reposition this product by creating a premium/upscale image. ▶ [ EVOLUTIONARY ] Along with maintaining the current bottle shape, it was important to not stray too far away from the original look and feel. I believed it was important to keep the map-like image. The current label was broken up into too many sections, so the first step was to make the entire label feel more cohesive. I also felt that this monster’s skin tone was a little too pale, so I deepened the tone of his blue. Lastly, I refined the Death’s Door logo by changing the main typeface, casting a shadow for depth, and adding more detail in the flourishes. ▶ [ REVOLUTIONARY ] The concept behind this design started from the history of the name “Death’s Door.” Death’s Door is a rather grim name for the body of water that is between Door County Peninsula and Washington Island. There are numerous stories of major shipwrecks and ship capsizing by the swirling currents and howling winds. To illustrate this, I wanted to make the label feel like it was a “message in a bottle.” To put a twist to it, I decided to create the illusion as if the map were under water. To make this illusion possible the label is adhered from the back creating an obscure view of the label. Its purpose is to first get the customers’ attention due to the distorted view and then get them to interact with the bottle by tilting it around and exploring all its hidden treasures. During this project, I was constantly reminded that gin is not considered an aggressive drink. Therefore the “handsome skull” featured on the front label is meant to give a free-spirited and goofy tone.

him right down the middle! The only way to defeat him is by creating a new brand image,

packaging structure and graphics for a wall or desk clock. Along with the graphics, I must

take on the responsibility of coming up with a unique clock product design.

[ PRO JECT ] Clo ck Pr oje c t

▶ [ INSPIRATION ] The clock and packaging design are inspired by Brian Donnelly’s toy design. Brian Donnelly is also known as the artist KAWS. Brian Donnelly started as a graffiti artist. His art varies from paintings, sculptures, vinyl toys, clothing, accessories, bags, watches. The toy in particular that I was truly inspired by was his Dissected Companion. I decided to deconstruct his toy design to create a clock. ▶ [ CLOCK CONCEPT ] Instead of just making a clock exactly resemble the toy, I decided to dissect the clock itself. Half being what we see on the outside, and the other half exploiting the gears and mechanisms. To stay true to the parent company, I kept the product design simple, Muji-inspired, and colorful.

The Ant Phenom enon

army of phenomenal ants. To overcome this monster and its troops, I need to design a

Typeface Promotion for United by House Industries. The project includes: a Promotional

[ PRO JECT ] Ty p e Pr o m otio n

Book and Type Specimen Book that will go together inside a slipcase. Other deliverables are a 24 x 26 in. Poster, along with a Type Foundry Website. ▶ [ CONCEPT ] Based off of the name “United” and its enormous family of 105, the type designer Tal Leming wanted to leave the designer to “never wanting more”. With that said, I thought about ants, their society and their architecture. Ants utilize their environment and surroundings without any sort of schooling and still manage to efficiently work together. The entire project will strictly use different styles from a single typefaces to portray this concept of utilizing its environment and all of its surroundings. ▶ [ GAME PLAN ] The book will contrast tiny type and big type to give the feeling of how little ants in this big world are capable of producing something amazing and phenomenal. The imagery will be line work. In order to get a better understanding of the hidden phenomenon of ants, this book starts off through the social structure and will take you through anatomy, pheromones, colonies, and the ant hill.

It’s not just the lower class going to the dollar store anymore. Dollar General, which just announced plans to open 625 stores this year, noted recently that its fastest growing customer segment is shoppers who earn more than $70,000 a year. Dollar Tree was called out by Kantar Retail as one of the country’s fast-growing retailers in a December report. ▶ [ OUR IDEA ] Our store is called, Change for a Dollar, or just Change for short. The word change refers to both coin change as well as it being a change to what people think about dollar stores. Our design will be based on simple, innovative, packaging that utilizes cheap materials, but creates a warm inviting presence that gives you confidence in the product. We feel that there is a lack of “good design” currently in the dollar store sector. We feel that this is a great opportunity to show what a cohesive, modern, and well thought out, dollar store concept could look like.

I formulated my own ideas and opinions on what would be best and appropriate. “The Walking Dead” is a TV Show which offers a lot of information on transformation, cause, brain functions, weapons, targets, etc. Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is video game where I can pull inspiration and specs on weapons: damage, accuracy, range. The book in particular that I based much of my information on the Z-Virus is “So Now You’re a Zombie A Handbook for the Newly Undead” by John Austin. ▶ [ PANTONE POSTER SERIES ] The Ultimate Zombies Survival Guide. “Z-Virus” would explain the transformation of a human to zombie and what can cause this change (being scratched, bit, symptoms, etc.) “Survive” is the zombie survival kit that would showcase various weapons (damage, range, accuracy, etc.) and essential items needed to survive this apocalypse. Lastly, “Target” would show the most effective target areas when aiming at a zombie. The poster style resembles a diagram/infographic feel.

▶ [ BACKGROUND ] “Teachers who have been teaching science for donkey years, they just muck up the definition and they spit it out. When teachers make it, children make it. You can see a gleam in their eye. They get a thrill of what science is all about. And this science is not a rich man’s game. In a democratic country, science must reach to our most oppressed, to the most marginalized children. This program started with 16 schools and spread to 1,500 government schools. Over 100,000 children learn science this way. And we’re just trying to see possibilities.” After watching a few TED Conferences, I was definitely moved by Arvind Gupta’s “Trash to Toys”. Gupta spoke about creative ways to transform ordinary items into toys for learning. ▶ [ UPCYCLING ] The brochure is a guidebook “Upcycling Trash to Toys” filled with step by step diagrams, quotes from Gupta, and information about other similar upcycling programs available. The posters highlight the top three upcycling projects. The project is a combination of learning, upcycling, and fun for children and adults.

▶ [ RESEARCH ] Barbershops can seem intimidating, especially if you’re used to visiting

a salon for a basic cut. What I wanted to achieve with this project is ways to make new potential customers feel comfortable. Keeping the themes of black chalk board, wood and illustrations. Essentially creating an entire promotional series that will help potential customers learn the intimidating barbershop lingo. ▶ [ EXPERIENCE ] Prior to this project, I personally have never been to an actual barbershop. My boyfriend was in dire need of a haircut so I decided to use him as my guinea pig. He has also never been to a barbershop so this was very new to us. Upon our arrival he was required to sign his name on a chalkboard (filled with at least 10-20 names) the wait is possibly an hour or two. I soon realized that visiting a barbershop is all about the experience and the atmosphere. Everyone including the barbers cracked jokes, laughed, and at the same time they were working hard to make you look sharp. They even offer you free shots of whiskey to relax your nerves.

▶ [ BACKGROUND ] A unique selling point for Avedanos Holly Park Market was the fact that not only are they old fashion but they are women owned. A meat and deli is usually stereotyped as a job for males, however, Avedanos breaks that status quo. Each owner brings unique skills to the table. Tia is Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Sociale in Presido Heights. She is the in-house butcher. She always creates a rotating menu of seasonal prepared foods that are available for take-out. Melanie works with Tia at Sociale, and she is responsible for procuring many of the hard-to-find products they offer at Avedanos. Angela is an entrepreneur and a former cook, she is house and management for day-to-day operations of the business and serves as the bookkeeper. ▶ [ CONCEPT ] I wanted to introduce a feminine feel to the meat and deli industry within the color palette and design. I contrasted the color palette by balancing it out with their old fashion and tough names for meat packages; The Man Handler, The Butcherette, The Housewife, The Griller, The Lean and Mean, etc.
