2:00 - 4:00 pm $69 person | 2/$125

VIP EARLY ENTRANCE limited to 75 guests 1:00 - 4:00 pm $85 person

Hello to all those who Imbibe: Welcome to our annual “Top 100 list” from Imbibe; the only list that really matters. We can hardly believe it has been almost four years since we opened our doors in Bakersfield. This may be our 4th year operating back home, but Tami and I have been in the retail wine business for 28 years and with our staff, we enjoy a combined 153 years experience in retail and hospitality service. Just like every year, we have tasted thousands of wines throughout the year, always weighing the merits and value of each wine, beer or spirit presented to us, and we have once again culled the list to what you hold in your hands today; in our opionion, the 100 most over-achieving wines available on the market. I have told you before, it is no challenge to me to offer you about a great wine that retails for $75 dollars or more. Frankly, it’s a big part of our business. The challenge is in finding those gems that are not only well-made and delicious, but also a good value. To make it a little more interesting, we also require that the producer can make their wines available to us for a period of time, so that we can assure supply. We do not, and will never, produce a Top 100 List filled with sold-out wines that you can only read about. A large part of the Imbibe experience is to know with confidence that we have weeded out any and all average wine; if it is not outstanding for the money, you will not see it on our shelves. A little about this year’s list: it is comprised roughly of 60% red and 40% white wines: 70% domestic vs. 30% import wines; and 100% really good wines. On this year’s list you will find wines priced from $8 to $80. This year we have two Cabernets at the top of the list, one from Oakville, which is the Beverly Hills of Napa; and a wonderful Cabernet from St. Helena with a owner named McMinn. FYI, that is Tami’s maiden name - are they related or is it just coincidence? I will tell you after you try the wine. Also at the top of the list are two Champagnes, one from France and the other from Oregon - both are must trys. We are very proud of this list and we want to earn your trust, so we’d like you to join us on the 19th of January for our Top 100 Tasting, where you can test drive any or all of the wines on this list. We’re confident you’ll be happy you did. Please don’t forget to mark your calendars also for our annual Favorites Beer Tasting on January 26th, where you can sample from 25 of our perenniel best selling, staff favorite beers across a wide spectrum of styles. Thank you to each of you who support Imbibe; we will continue to be the best wine shop we can be. Please tell a friend! Wishing you and your families good health & happiness,

David, Tamera and the Imbibe Team

2013 TOP 100 WINES #1

2009 Hillary Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville $32.99 I have never been so excited about our #1 wine as I am about this one. Here is a Cabernet Sauvignon from a great vintage and from Oakville. All I have to remind you of are the neighbors - Screaming Eagle, Plumpjack, Opus One, Far Niente, Dalla Valle and Rudd to name a few. The average cost of Cabernet coming out of Oakville is well over $75 a bottle. Owners Yolyn and Nick Goldschmidt bring us this wine. Both originally from New Zealand, they have both lived and worked in the wine business in New Zealand, Australia, South America and America. Goldschmidt Vineyard Cabernets are crafted with the best possible resources to achieve exceptional richness, quality and balance; the hallmark of world class wine. Nick was born and educated in New Zealand and started his wine career in 1982 in New Zealand. In 1990 Nick and wife Yolyn settled in Healdsburg, California to start anew as associate Winemaker at Simi. He quickly moved up to become Chief winemaker in 1991. Today, Nick focuses on his own two labels, Goldschmidt Vineyards Cabernet and the International Forefathers label. Enough about Nick: let me tell you about the wine. This wine is full bodied with nice tannins that are balanced with great structure, power and weight. As I alluded to at the beginning, all the stars lined up for this wine: great vintage, great winemaking, great AVA (Oakville) and a great price. Do yourself a favor and pick up a case, for it will sell out before you know it. ~ David

2010 Vineyard 29 Cru Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $49.99 This outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from Vineyard 29 could easily be #1. It lost out only because we felt that the #1 wine was more of a value, though I consider this wine a great value as well. We struggled with having two Cabernets on the top of the list but taste for yourself why we think this wine is worthy of a top spot. The concept is simple, the execution flawless; make the wine in the vineyard. This wine is made from purchased grapes throughout Napa Valley from the best growers. The wine has extraordinary depth and complexity. Aromas of dried currant, blackberries and chocolate. On the palate you will love the black fruit flavors with a hit of black pepper. What makes this wine so special is the profound texture that coats your mouth and the long supple finish. I have long been a fan of this wine andI think this is their best effort to date. No one is more committed to making fine wine then the folks at Vineyard 29. ~ David

#3

2007 Louis Roederer Brut Rose Champagne, France $79.99 Where to start? This is the finest Champagne I have tasted. I have spent four times the price and not had a better experience. Here is what I learned when asking about this wine. A great Rose Champagne must be made from very ripe grapes which are sometimes difficult to obtain in the Champagne climate. As a result Louis Roederer has chosen to invest in one of the earliest Crus, from Cumieres, because the steeply sloping, shallow clay and limestone soils face south and benefit from the additional light reflected from the river. This Brut Rose is aged an average of four years in cellars and also spends six months resting after disgorging. Dynamic, creamy bubbles. Intense complex aromas of strawberry and peach. Once opened, with some airing citrus and gingerbread will jump out of the glass. I dare you to find a more enjoyable Champagne. ~ David

2009 Kuleto India Ink Cabernet/Syrah Blend, Napa $39.99 Kuleto has been making wines for over a decade. I thought, based on location and their talented winemaker, that the wines under-delivered. In 2009, Bob Foley purchased the Kuleto Estate and they reinvented themselves. With over 80 acres divided into more than 100 micro blocks they have a lot to work with. My favorite is the wine called India Ink which is a blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is dark and meaty, with blue and black berry fruit flavors. This wine lives up to its name. It is dark, mouth filling and incredibly long on the palate. My hat Is off to winemaker Dave Lattin for making wines with intensity and balance. ~ David

#5

2010 Textbook Merlot $23.99 Superb sites in the Rutherford & Carneros AVA’s highlight the pedigree of this inaugural release. Classic Bordelaise winemaking (handwork in vineyard, modest use of new French oak barrels, egg-white fining) partnered with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon provide a richly textured and balanced result. Originally brought to the United States in the 1850’s from Pomerol by Antoine Delmas, Merlot is, at its best, a textured wine capable of great elegance. This wine balances the rich abundance of Merlot’s black currant aromas and flavors with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the influences of new French oak. Full bodied with soft, round tannins and a plush mouth feel, this Merlot shows a mature intensity that extends all the way into a smooth, silken finish. ~ Dan

#6

2009 Adelaida Keepers Paso Robles, California $22.91 This is a new wine from Adelaida Cellars. A Rhone style red blend made from five grape varietals. Adelaida’s desire was to craft a wine that holds your interest and shows complexity from the blending of these varieties. Mouvedre is game, spice and earth; Grenache is raspberry; Syrah is dark berry fruit; Cinsault is soft aromatics; and Cournoise is deep purple color, spice and floral. The wine is engaging and complex and hits on all cylinders. I have been a fan of Adelaida for many years and this wine is another winner. The sister wine to the Keeper is a White Rhone blend called Finder. Look for it on our shelves as well. ~ David

#7

2009 Stephen Ross Pinot Noir $24.91 This is a brilliant ruby-red wine with pretty aromatics. Deep garnet in color, with rich aromas of black cherry, rose petal and a touch of sandalwood that carry to palate in a terrific fruit-bowl of flavor. Classic Pinot Noir flavors; intense, but not cloying or jammy in any sense, showing appropriate restraint and structure and leaving with a long finish. The fragrance is reminiscent of Bing cherry, cranberry, black tea and forest floor. As a result of the cool growing season, there are pronounced red-berry flavors on the palate, and textures are elegant in nature, with fine tannins, clean acidity and lingering notes of dried red fruits. Open with a bit of airtime. Terrific and drinking exceptionally well. ~ Dan

#8

2009 J Dusi Zinfandel Paso Robles, California $29.91 For the second year in a row this wine has made our list. The 2009 bottling cracked the list inside our Top 10 and is the highest rated Zinfandel for the 2013 Collection. This is a new label; this being only their forth vintage, but the Dusi family has been growing Zinfandel grapes for over a half a century. Dusi has been selling these head pruned dry farmed vines to several well known Paso area producers, including Turley Wine Company. Today 6

Granddaughter Janelle gets her pick from the vineyard to produce what we think to be one of the finest Zinfandels in America. This wine has great structure and texture. Look for the bottle with the painted blue stripe; you will be glad you did. ~ David

#9

2011 Daou Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles $26.99 For the second year in a row this wine has made our Top 100 list. If you have not heard of Daou Vineyards yet, you will, for it will be synonymous with Paso Robles in the years ahead. Owner Daniel Daou has over 100 acres of premium vineyards located at more than 2000 feet in the Adelaida Mountains. Founded in 2007, brothers Daniel and George Daou are well on their way to becoming the finest Cabernet producer on the Central Coast. Heck, I would put their reserve wines against anything being produced in America. This 2011 bottling displays great depth and concentration with loads of black currant, chocolate and baking spice aromas and flavors. If you have not yet visited Daou, it is a must visit. Look, too, for other Daou wines at Imbibe. ~ David

#10

2008 Argyle Blanc de Blanc Sparking Wine, Oregon $39.91 Argyle has always been the go-to sparkling wine from Oregon. 2008 was not only a glorious year for still wines, it turns out that it was a pretty darn special year for sparkling wine as well. This Blanc de Blancs is a brilliant pale straw color with a beautifully fine mousse and delicate aromas of white flowers, sugar cookies and quince. In the mouth it comes alive with concentrated ripe flavors of sweet pear, choux pastry and melon. Great balance and a backbone of mineral acidity. Blanc de Blancs, translated, means white of white (telling us it is made of the white grape Chardonnay). The grapes are sourced from the famed Knudsen Vineyard and will age elegantly for the next 4-5 years. I have not seen this wine score less than 90/100 by the wine critics for the last ten harvests. It is one of my favorite sparkling wines on the market. ~ David

#11

2010 Dr. Fisher Riesling, Germany $14.91 We discovered this wine late in the year, and with our first sip we knew it was a winner. This Riesling has great minerality and acidity that more than offsets its residual sugar, making the wine seem drier than other German Rieslings at the same pradikat levels. The wine is marked by a delicate fruit profile, and it is a great companion to a vast array of foods. It would pair perfectly with delicate seafood dishes, including half-shell items, as well as a wide variety of soft cheeses. With its wonderful acidity, it makes for a perfect aperitif. Too often we pass on Riesling for we think of sweet and simple wine. Riesling is a very noble grape and one of my favorites. ~ David

#12

2008 David Fulton Petite Sirah Old Vine, Napa $44.99 I have been friends with Fulton and Dink Mather for over a decade. I first met them when they showed up at my store in Glendale and asked if I would like to try their Petite Sirah. After just one taste, I knew we would enjoy a long productive relationship. That year their wine was Wine #1 and we sold close to 100 cases of their 300 case production. Since then their wine has been on our list more than many other wine. This will make their 5th appearance and the 2008 is one of my favorites. This vineyard was planted back in 1860 and are the oldest Petite Sirah vines in the nation. The 2008 vintage received only 60% of its normal rainfall. (cont.) This produced a wider range of bright, hightone fruit flavors emanating from the expected deep, dark color of the wine. Shows pleasing blackberry fig, cinnamon, Wine, Spirits, Beer, Cheese, Cigars, Wine Storage, Wine & Beer Bar, Events, Education, Gifts, Accessories

dark bakers chocolate and licorice aromas with flavors of red cherry, boysenberry, raspberry and distinct vanilla on the palate. With soft tannins, it has a round, velvety silk feel that is not common for Petite Sirah. You will never taste a better Petite Sirah than this, period. ~ David

#13

2011 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Clark & Telephone, Santa Maria $34.91 Clark and Telephone Vineyard acquired its name from the corner at which it sits, Clark Avenue & Telephone Road. Planted in 1972 this vineyard today produces some of the most outstanding Pinot Noir in all of Santa Maria. This wine has been high on our radar for many years. This is the first year we have added them to our list for we have been told they can supply our demand. This is a Cabernet Lovers Pinot Noir, it is dense and concentrated. Deep scarlet color out of the gate. Aromas of cinnamon and cranberry with a hint of ginger spice. On the palate you will enjoy sweet baking spices and tart berries. FYI: This wine comes from the Wagner family who bring us Caymus Cabernet, a bench mark in that category. Late last year while hosting a grand party for charity and pouring some of our favorite wines this Pinot Noir was the talk of the party. Take some home and see for yourself; you and your guests will be talking about this outstanding Pinot Noir. ~ David

#14

2010 Broadside Cabernet Sauvignon $19.99 Broadside Cabernet Sauvignon is the result of an effort to capture a pure and unadulterated representation of this grape and site. At 1000 feet of elevation with a chilling coastal influence, well-drained soils at Margarita Vineyard provide a balance of stress and sustenance to the rugged vines. Continuing the intent to produce an unaltered wine, fermentation is allowed to proceed naturally without any adjustments or additions in the cellar. While robustly fruited in its youth, Broadside Cabernet Sauvignon is graced with an underlying framework of subtle tannin and acidity. Black currant and plums highlight a brightly wound core of berry fruit and spice. Finishes dry with a sleek vein of minerality. ~ Dan

#15

2010 Cristom Pinot Gris, Oregon $18.99 I have long considered Cristom my favorite estate in America, for I love Pinot Noir and no one does it better than they do. Having said that, we have picked their Pinot Gris for this year’s Top 100. This wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and does not spend any time in oak. It has a creaminess that comes from the several months that the wine spends on it lees. The wine has bright citrus-blossom aromas that range from tangerine zest to lime blossom. Apple, pear and melon are the fruit flavors that fill your palate. This is a bright and lively wine that offers a broad flavor profile. It has a very natural affinity with food. This is a must try wine. ~ David

#16

2010 Charles Smith Merlot Velvet Devil, Washington $11.99 Charles Smith created the Charles Smith Wine label in 2006 to produce wines to be enjoyed now that are true to their place of origin. This Columbia Valley Merlot (91% Merlot, 9% Cabernet) is full of flavor, balanced and approachable. Charles Smith Wines is only one of Charles many ventures; he is also the mastermind behind K Vintners, Secco Italian Bubbles, Charles& Charles, Vino and more. I first met Charles while working at a wine store in Spokane, Washington. He pulled up in a 1950’s convertible with his wild long hair wind blown into a frenzy and a beautiful young model’esqe blonde by his side (this took place in 2002, just a year after his first release of “99” K Syrah in 2001). 8

New on the Washington wine scene he was referred to as the ‘Rock n Roll” winemaker (previously he did manage rock bands in Europe). Charles Smith Wines are full of expression and so is he, hence this quote; Why Velvet Devil? IT MAKES MERLOT SOUND SEXY ….BECAUSE IT IS! No further comments needed - try his wines and you will not be disappointed! ~ Christa

2011 Guild White Blend $13.91 The folks at Guild came to us this year with two outstanding wines. We were so impressed they both made our list for 2013. Guild is a cooperative of four Oregon vintners producing wines of exceptional values. This White Rhone varietal blend from Oregon is a crisp and refreshing wine that embodies the ideals of quality, value and richness. This wine is light to medium on the palate and starts with tropical fruit notes such as apricot and then transgresses into aromas of honey suckle. This is one of the most well rounded white wines that you can indulge in for the money in our store. Pick a few up today. ~ Anthony

#18

2003 Roederer Estate l’Ermitage, Anderson Valley $39.91 For years L’Ermitage has been my favorite sparkling wine in America. Produced in the traditional French method champenoise, adding oakaged reserve wines to each blend. L’Ermitage is made only in exceptional years from pre-selected lots on the Estate. The concept of vintage L’Ermitage is the same one that is used in Champagne: Only the best of the vintage is selected. This exceptional wine is made from a “noble” (special) blend that allows for longer aging, which produces a fine wine with elegance and finesse. Members of the blending team include winemakers from Champagne Louis Roederer in France and Roederer Estate in California, together totaling over 130 years of experience. You will not find a finer sparkling wine in America. ~ David

#19

2010 Adelaida Finder White Rhone Blend, Paso Robles $22.91 This is a new white Rhone blend that combines varietals of contrasting characters - Roussanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc. These are grapes that are native to both the Southern and Northern Rhone Valley in France. This wine has a wonderful mouth feel with penetrating scents of wild flower, honey and Asian pear. What makes this wine so unique are its flavors of crisp apple, beeswax and Asian pear. On the finish I pick up flavors of peach and quince, even a hint of cardamom spice. You will not find a wine with this much enjoyment and unique flavors at this price ever! I have long been a fan of Adelaida; look for their red on our shelves as well, it’s just as outstanding. ~ David

#20

Mighty Mighty Red Wine California $7.99 Here is a fun wine from start to finish, from the label to your taste buds, a field and a winery blend all in one. This wine is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with some other grapes blended in to make it very yummy. A wine not to take too seriously. We want you to just pull the cork and enjoy. We first tasted this wine late last year and on our first sip we knew we had a winner. Rich and luscious wine for just a few bucks. It’s one of the most over achieving wines on our list. Pick up a bottle or a case and check it out for yourself. This is a wine you can pour ‘til the fat lady starts singing. ~ David

2010 Ch Ste Michelle Chardonnay Indian Wells $18.99 It’s all in the location. The warmth of the Wahluke Slope produces Chardonnay with an appealing tropical fruit character and rich, creamy texture. The Indian Wells Chardonnay delivers ripe pineapple flavors with hints of brown sugar. You will like the balance displayed in this Chardonnay. You can enjoy it by the glass or with numerous food options. I like this wine with scallops, scampi or pasta with rich sauces. ~ Dan

#22

2009 Lincourt Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills $19.91 The Lincourt Pinot Noir is an excellent “great-value” wine. Pinot Noir has long been referred to as the wine of Kings, thanks to the Bourgogne region of France putting out the most prestigious Pinots. Pinot, a light and delicate grape, is exceptionally hard to make; thus a good example of what Pinot should taste like is sometimes hard to find at this price point. However, Lincourt knocked the ball out of the park with its light, cherry-packed palate and refreshing body. The experts say all roads lead to Pinot; if your path hasn’t landed here yet, begin your journey by picking up an exceptional bottle of Lincourt today. ~ Anthony

2010 Decoy Red Blend, Napa $22.91 Because of Duckhorn Wine Company’s unique structure, Decoy benefits from the talent, experience and expertise of all their winemakers, each of whom has a unique area of specialization. Fruit for the Decoy Red Blend comes from a mix of Estate vineyards and top growers. 2010 Simi Reserve Chardonnay Russian River Reserve $19.91 Simi Winery has been making wine for over 125 years. Simi is rooted in tradition and built on cutting edge innovation. I have always considered Simi a producer of good solid wines. This bottling has me thinking they produce outstanding Chardonnay. Russian River is a great place to grow Chardonnay grapes and this one delivers fruit with minerality. On the nose I picked up honey, lemon and hints of pineapple. This is followed with flavors of green apple, peach and pear. Try this wine with some grilled salmon or risotto. Winery price $28. ~ David

2010 La Fleur Renaissance $15.99 Sauternes is one of the few, if not the only wines that can last 100 years in bottle and still be palatable. Robert Parker, Jr. might have put Sauternes on the map for the average American drinking by tasting 1918 era vintages and noting that thanks to the near fortified status of the wine, it stood the test of time. This bottling is a great introduction to what Sauternes tastes like at the price point. Comprised of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc this ultra concentrated white wine will taste like a syrup for the next decade, something the Moscato and tawny Port lovers can appreciate, and over the next 20-30 years a truly inspiring wine will emerge. ~ Anthony

2011 Jenner Pinot Noir, Sonoma $18.99 Crafted from luscious fruit grown in the cooler regions of the Sonoma Coast appellation, the Jenner Pinot Noir is the finest expression of what this fertile area has to offer. Fragrant aromas of Bing cherries, red licorice and plums burst forth from the glass and foretell the complexities that will follow. The palate showcases bright red fruit and subtle earth tones balanced by bold acidity with elegant tannins. ~ Christa

2011 Mer Soleil Chardonnay Silver $21.99 Mer Soleil Silver is a pure, clean expression of our Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay. The wine is fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and small Nomblot cement tanks. These unlined tanks are made from natural limestone-based cement, so temperatures are kept stable while still allowing a small amount of oxygen contact to enhance flavor development. The unique ceramic bottle is reminiscent of the cement fermenters that enhance this wine so beautifully, and continues to preserve the bright, fresh fruit characters. Bright minerality and fresh-cut hay qualities are apparent on the nose, followed by zesty citrus and stone-fruit notes. Seamless fruit flavors of grapefruit, lemon and gooseberry shine through on the midpalate, complemented by a crisp acidity that carries through from start to finish. The higher acidity in this wine makes it a perfect accompaniment to a wide array of food, particularly fresh summer salads, grilled seafood, tomato-based dishes and guacamole. ~ Dan

2011 Domaines Schlumberger, Princes Abbes Pinot Gris, France $19.99 We recently hosted this winery in our store and the staff found all of the wines that were poured to be of a very impressive quality, but this particular wine stood out with its hints of smoke, lemon curd and fresh forest floor; add layers of complexity to the white peach, pink grapefruit and spiced orange peel flavors, this white is elegant and focused. The onset in the mouth is fresh, delicate and moderately ample. In the middle mouth, some roundness brings full-bodiness while remaining very fine. The finish presents a balanced base along with an ample and fresh structure. This wine is a good match for white meats, or fish in white butter sauce. ~ Christa

Thomas Fogarty Skyline Red $15.91 This red blend is a great “slow Tuesday red wine. This blend exemplifies why blending should not be shunned but embraced and appreciated by us all. By blending, a wine maker can reach moderate flavor profiles that a single varietal would not yield. Deep fruits such as boysenberries, fig and cassis open up the palate to a surprisingly deep and complex red. ~ Anthony

2011 Long Meadow Ranch Sauvignon Blanc, Napa $17.99 We first tasted this wine in Oct of 2012 and found it to be a great follow up to their 2010. This wine is delicious. The weather in 2011 induced a smaller crop and a long growing season which led to richer flavors in the wine. One sip will introduce you to the stone fruit flavors and aromas, including peach, pear and apricot. Owner Ted Hall has integrated organic farming into all he grows on this beautiful Ranch, ranging from olive oil to cattle, poultry and grape growing. When you’re in Napa, make it a point to stop by Long Meadow Ranch and explore the outstanding wines and food. This is an ideal wine with crab cakes, grilled salmon or a margarita pizza. ~ David

2010 Sextant Zinfandel Wheelhouse $18.91 Sextant’s Wheelhouse Zinfandel is the one you must have stored away in your cellar. An amazing wine at an even more amazing price point, the Wheelhouse starts out with rich fruits and a full palate but then yields a masculine and peppery finish. This is the ultimate great value barbecue wine. Pop the top on this bottle with a rich steak or burger and enjoy how complementary this grape can be with the right food. ~ Anthony

2008 Black Bart Syrah, Napa $44.99 If I’ve said it once, I have said it a hundred times: Black Bart Syrah is one of the best Syrahs in America. Owners Jan and Bart Krupp have made a name for themselves as one of the valley’s finest grape growers. With neighbors like Bryant Family, Dalla Valle, Chappellet and Continum you know they must be in the right spot to grow amazing grapes. This wine is almost black in color from its concentration. Intense scents of blueberry, lavender and sweet spice come together with notes of bacon fat and graphite. A bold wine, yet it retains elegance with a velvety texture. Year and year, this is my favorite Syrah in the store. ~ David

2011 Cazar Pinot Noir $19.99 Cazar is a side project of Bill Hunter, who has been making wine under the Chasseur label since 1994 (‘cazar’ and ‘chasseur’ translate to ‘hunt’ in Spanish and French respectively). The emphasis of the Chasseur label is to craft serious, vineyard-designated wines from the West Sonoma region, while the goal of the Cazar label is to produce more entry-level, accessible cuvées that express the character of each vintage in the region as a whole and are meant for near-term consumption. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after resting in 25% new 60 gallon French oak barrels for 10 months, the 2011 Cazar is open and generous, showing soft berry tones and a juicy, textured mid-palate, accented by notes of herbs and oak spice. Fans of the pricier Chasseur label will find value instant gratification in this delightful Pinot, as will anyone looking for a good Pinot under $20. ~ Dan

2011 Calera Chardonnay Central Coast $19.99 Producing great wine is Calera’s number one priority and very simply put, there are no compromises. There was no question in Josh Jensen’s mind that he would plant his first grapes on limestone-rich soil, and so began his quest to find the perfect site to produce a California wine to rival the best French burgundies. Every year Calera purchases Chardonnay grapes from growers throughout the Central Coast Region of California to be made into Calera’s Central Coast Chardonnay. The vineyard sources for these wines have remained fairly consistent, however small quantities of fruit from new or newly available vineyards are included almost every year, with a constant eye toward the best possible quality. 2010 Alamos Malbec Seleccion $17.99 Alamos is the wine of the Andes. The mountains on the label pay homage to the high altitude, mountain climate of Mendoza. The 2010 Alamos Malbec has a dark purple color with velvet highlights. The nose offers bright black cherry aromas with light floral notes and a touch of toast. The mouth feel is full and rich, with ripe concentrated cassis and black raspberry fruit interwoven with a touch of chocolate and sweet spice from light oak aging. 2010 Frei Brothers Zinfandel $15.99 The grapes for the 2010 Zinfandel were gently destemmed, but not crushed, allowing a significant amount of whole berries in fermentation. The wine was cold soaked at 60°F to extract color and intense flavors from the grapes prior to primary fermentation. Then the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged on its lees to enhance the mouth feel. This 2010 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel displays red jam aromas with spicy notes of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Concentrated flavors of mixed berry compote and plum meld with hints of jam and toasty oak, framed by rustic tannins and a lingering finish. ~ Dan

Rich and flavorful on the palate, it is elegant, creamy and has just enough acidity to keep it fresh and lively. The citrus flavors linger on the palate and the wine finishes with enticing hazelnut. One of our best California Chardonnays. ~ Dan

2011 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay, South Africa $32.99 Hamilton Russell is considered the finest Chardonnay coming from South Africa. I first discovered this wine in 2007. I continue to search it out each year for it is among the best Chardonnay from the new world. Hamilton Russell is one of the most southerly wine estates in South Africa. These prized vineyards, located very close to the sea, are formed of stone, clay and shale. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep this wine in very tight demand. This wine has a prominent pear and lime fruit aroma and flavors that show hints of nectarine and grapefruit. This is world class wine. One could easily spend three times as much for a wine of this quality. ~ David

2011 Baker and Brain Gruner Veltliner $23.99 Gruner Veltliner is a white varietal that is nowhere near appreciated enough by the American public for the overall quality that each bottle carries. When properly made this varietal is one of the most food friendly white wines around. While some Veltliners can age exceptionally well, this one should be enjoyed now. Fresh citrus with minerality in the finish creates a palate that is rarely seen together in a wine. Expand your knowledge of European white varietals with this bottling of one of our favorite Gruner Veltliners. ~ Anthony

Le Grand Coutage Brut Rose, France $19.91 This sparkling wine from France is an unusual blend of three grapes from four terroirs, making this wine a delight for your palate. It is versatile enough to pair with a wide array of cuisines. Fresh and fruity, with aromas of young strawberry, raspberry, and notes of lilac and violets. It is made from a blend of Chardonnay, providing depth and structure to the wine; Ugni Blanc, which offers a natural acidity and freshness and the light-bodied Gamey that provides vibrant youthful fruit expressions reminiscent of wild berries and flowers amongst the French countryside on a warm summer day. ~ David

2010 Testarossa Chardonnay, Monterey $19.91 Testarossa Winery was started in 1993 by husband and wife Rob and Diana Jensen as a small weekend hobby. What started as a 25 cases project in their garage has become a wonderful small production producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The 2010 Santa Lucia Highland Chardonnay from Monterrey County shows the winery’s commitment to small lot, vineyard driven wines. Winemaker Bill Brosseau drew from well known properties such as Sleepy Hollow and Lucia Highlands for the main body of the wine with additions from Rosella’s and Lone Oak vineyards for the final blend. All of this fantastic fruit was sur-lie aged for 10 months in 100% French oak barrels. The subtle influence of the French oak does not over power the fruit, instead creating a balanced wine that goes well with a wide variety of foods from creamy pasta to seafood to your favorite chicken recipe. ~ Stuart

2010 Drew Pinot Noir Fogeater Pinot Noir $39.99 The central coast’s cool marine layer allows this Pinot Noir to develop bright acidity while still retaining ample fruit on the palate. The cool layers allow the grapes to stay protected from the harsh sun for most of the day. Another great aspect of this wine is the portion of Rochiolli vineyard fruit that is added to the Drew estate fruit. This Pinot is ample enough to be enjoyed by alone but has the needed tannin structure and acidity to compliment any well made meal. ~ Anthony

2009 Provenance Merlot $24.91 We at Imbibe have been fans of this wine for some time. This is the third time this wine has made our list - quite a feat in its own right. Provenance winemaker Tom Rinaldi earned a stellar reputation at Duckhorn Vineyards as their winemaker for more than twenty years. It was big news when he was hired away to run Provenance and the rest is history. The wine opens to lush red currant and blackberry with hints of black cherry aromas. On the palate you will taste the same fruit flavors along with some clove and spice; finishing with notes of cranberry pastry crust. This wine is lovely on its own and it pairs beautifully with veal roast, coq an vin and subtle hard cheeses. This is a best buy in the Merlot category. ~ David

2009 Carpe Diem Chardonnay Firepeak Vineyard, Edna Valley $14.99 We all know the refrain of “Location, Location, Location” and how it can be amended to fit whatever subject one is speaking of. It is not a stretch to see how it applies to wine so fittingly. The Edna Valley area of San Luis Obispo county is very well known for its long growing season, mild climate, and perfect wine soils. All of this comes into play in this Burgundian style Chardonnay crafted by Christian Roguenant. This is a classic style of Chardonnay that balances the flavors of apple and fresh crisp pear with notes of citrus, the minerality of the Firepeak Vineyard’s soil and hints of vanilla from aging in French Oak. This 100% Chardonnay wine is wonderful to enjoy by the glass, as well as a compliment to your favorite lighter foods. ~ Stuart

2011 Don Rodolfo Cabernet Sauvignon Vina Cornejo, Argentina $11.99 With vineyards that soar to 6,000 feet, Cafayate Valley is one of the world’s highest altitude viticultural regions. It lies amid the snow-capped Andes of northwestern Argentina’s Salta province, near the border of Bolivia and just below the Tropic of Capricorn. Cafayate Valley is home to but a handful of wineries, producing only about 4% — but some of the very best — of Argentina’s wines. The Valley’s isolation and high altitude make it ideally suited for winemakers dedicated to the limited production of premium wines. Deep ruby red color. Notes of fruit, pepper and spice on the nose, with subtle hints of vanilla and toast from brief aging in French and American oak barrels. Good volume in the mouth, structured, with ripe tannins and an excellent finish. ~ Dan

This wine is very compelling with plum, pomegranate, pink rose petal, boysenberry and a hint of water melon jump out of the glass. Flavors of boysenberry and spicy cherries with a nice black raspberry flavor that shines through. Juicy dark berries, flowers and spices flesh out the inviting finish. If you want to experience the finest Pinot Noirs being made in California you must put the wines of Calera on your list. 2011 Argyle Riesling, Oregon $18.99 This is the only domestic Riesling to make our list this year. This is not your Grandmother’s Riesling. I will tell you one of the noblest grapes is Riesling. It is so versatile. I would describe this wine as youth in a glass. Light on its feet and smelling of spring with lime blossom, white lilacs and just a hint of lychee on the nose. The wine finishes medium dry with some minerality reminiscent of wet stones. This is a wine you can drink now or set some aside to discover the complexity that will develop with a number of years of aging. Argyle has made their name by producing outstanding sparkling wines and Pinot Noir; now you can and should add Riesling to the list. Less than 1,000 cases produced and we are proud to say we are one of the few to receive this wine. ~ David

2011 Broadside Chardonnay $19.99 Broadside combines the talents of winemakers Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars and Brian Terrizzi of Giornata to produce artisanal, balanced wines from interesting sites in small quantities that are priced to drink. Their winemaking favors a natural approach in that all wines are minimally handled to best express the grape, site and vintage. The commitment is to wines of balance and finesse that make sense on the dinner table. They harvest at lower sugars, employ native fermentation and use little to no new oak. This is 100% Chardonnay from the famous Paso Robles James Berry Vineyard. Partial malolactic fermentation preserves the brighter aspects of the fruit while contributing a rich, but not heavy texture. ~ Dan

2010 Gruen Mosel Riesling $12.91 As I’m sure we all know by now, Riesling is an extremely dynamic varietal. A California Riesling compared to a Washington State, Oregon or German Riesling will be worlds apart. That said, German Riesling’s should always have a tinge of petroleum to them. Yes, you read that right; petrol should be a defining characteristic of this amazing varietal. The full flavor profile is a testament to terraced vineyards steeped in rich soil. Once you’ve tried this full bodied yet refined Riesling you’ll be hooked on the German way of wine making. ~ Anthony

An aromatic nose of ripe lemons and crushed stones; on the palate, hints of tarragon butter and lime zest. I love the racy acidity this wine exhibits. Ideal to sip with friends. 2010 MacRostie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast $22.91 The 2010 growing season was long and cool for Sonoma County. It was about as long and cool as anyone could seem to remember. This meant growers had to wait for the fruit. And wait. And wait a little more. Patience was rewarded with fruit that had great flavor and sugar levels that gave ideally balanced juice for winemakers to work with. MacRostie fermented most of the juice in Hungarian and French oak barrels but kept some set aside for stainless steel fermentation to show fruitiness and release some delicious aromatics. You’ll start with a nose of soft lemon and flowers. The stirring of the lees during aging gives a rich mouth feel of pears and apples and you’ll have a nice silky finish with hints of toast and spice. ~ Stuart

2010 Michel Chiarlo Barbera d’Asti, Italy $14.91 This red fruit packed, food friendly wine is an amazing introductory example of fine Barbera from the village of Asti. This Italian initially hits the palate with bright cherries but then immediately exhibits its youthful elegance with firm and enveloping tannins. While it is a fun wine to drink by itself, introductory wine enthusiasts might find it overpowering with its tannin structure. If introducing this fine Italian to someone, make sure she is paired with hearty food. But then again, that’s what Italian wine is all about, an enhancer to what is surely going to be a fine dining experience. ~ Anthony

2009 Ahnfeldt Cabernet Sauvignon $39.91 Ahnfeldt Cabernet is a total sleeper wine for great quality California Cabernet below the $50 price point. Owners Bruce and Celeste have been growing grapes since 1985 and selling them to the likes of BV, Markham and Sterling Vineyards, just to name a few. Today, Bruce and Celeste are assisted by consulting winemaker Paul Hobbs, who has achieved national and international acclaim for his winemaking skills. 2011 Caposaldo Pinot Grigio, Italy $9.99 Caposaldo in Italian means ‘benchmark’, and this Pinot Grigio truly is. The grapes are planted in mineral rich, well draining hillside soils in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. The grapes are handpicked and fermented without the use of any oak. This allows the fruit, the ‘benchmark’ of Pinot Grigio, to show prominently. The classic flavor and style of Pinot Grigio is readily apparent in your glass. Caposaldo’s aromas of white fruit, subtle peach and flowers with a hint of almonds lead into a dry, crisp wine with vibrant fruit for its sweetness. It pairs very nicely with seafood, light pastas and some of our lighter cheese selections. This is an excellent bottle to accompany the Fig and Goat Cheese flatbread. ~ Stuart

2009 Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon, California $19.99 2009 marks the first vintage for the inclusion of Lake County sourcing in our Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Lake County contributed incredible ripe fruit and a generous mouth feel and viscosity to the overall blend. Sonoma County vineyards supplied jammy dark fruits, and Napa County vineyards were instrumental in establishing the foundation for structure and density to support Sonoma County’s fruit forward characteristics. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon displays aromas and flavors of plums and blackberries, with layered notes of mocha, toasted pound cake and roasted nuts. This wine has superb complexity. Enjoy! ~ Dan

2007 Marques Du Murrieta, Spain $24.99 This Tempranillo from the Rioja region of Spain packs loads of initial fruit but then develops into an earthy old world example of what Rioja should be. While it is more reserved on the “funky-barnyard” aspect, hints of earth still come through. Exquisite tannin structure leaves a firm wine ready to be enjoyed with an equally powerful meal. This wine, like most of my old world selections, should be paired with food to fully enhance the qualities of the wine. ~ Anthony 18

The 2010 Cervantes Mountain Cuvee from Chappellet is certainly the choice to fulfill that request. This is a winemaker’s blend of Bordeaux varietals that shows how each component can complement and enhance all of the others into a wine that is pure pleasure in a glass. A solid amount of Merlot and the right touches of Petit Verdot and Malbec help to produce a wine that is flavorful and ready to drink now. You’ll experience a rich, dark glass full of the aromas of cherry, berry, cedar and cola. Hints of coffee mingle with notes of oak, bright cassis, and a touch of licorice. Its unique east to west layout, proximity to ocean breezes and mineral laden soil (from once being ocean bottom) all work to create some of the most wonderful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir produced in the world. At the front of the line for Edna Valley quality is Edna Valley Vineyards themselves. Their latest bottling of Paragon Chardonnay has earned its way onto our list once again. In 2010 the valley gave grapes that became a medium bodied wine with a fresh mouth feel and a long delightful finish. The glass starts with a nose of apple, pineapple, and apricot with a layer of cinnamon spice underneath. You’ll also recognize touches of pear and the sweet/tart flavor of quince. La Marca Prosecco, Italy $15.99 Prosecco has quickly become one of the most successful sparkling wine types made today. Made of the Glera grape, this expressive grape is prized for its delicate flavors and aromatics. Prosecco is associated with the hills in the Northern region of Italy know as the Vento. Prosecco is named after the village of Prosecco near Trieste. La Marca was founded more than 40 years ago. In 2007 the winery was selected at a “Top 100 Wine” by the Wine Spectator. We sell a lot of Prosecco and this is our favorite. Prosecco serves as an increasingly popular alternative to Champagne and is Italy’s answer to refreshing, well made sparkling wine at a reasonable price. ~ David

2010 Land & Reed Cabernet Franc, North Coast $21.99 Good friends John and Tracey Skupny bring you this wine. I first met John back in the mid 1990’s in Napa Valley when he was General Manager of Niebaum Coppola Estate Winery. A few years later I met Tracey who by day works at Spottswoode Winery in Napa. John and Tracy moved to St. Helena in 1984 following their dream. Because of their passion for Cabernet Franc they set a goal to present a wine that was “true to type”. Focusing on vineyards in the hills of Lake County, they work with growers who are passionate about growing Cabernet Franc that same way. The 2010 is an assemblage of four vineyards. It’s bright violet blue in color with aromas of red berry, hints of lavender and licorice. This wine is brilliant when shared and enjoyed with friends and family; if you drink enough of it, it may even make you smarter. I find this wine new, different and a nice change from Cabernet. ~ David

2011 Leo Steen Calpella Mendocino County $18.99 The emblem of Leo Steen’s wines is a big purple thumbprint. After the start of his wine career in Holland, he came to and fell in love with California (as we all do!). He learned wine making by day and worked as a Sommelier at night. His day job was evidenced by his wine stained fingers and he uses the emblem to show how hands on he is with wines. But ‘hands on’ does not always mean lots of meddling in the wine. His Calpella red blend is just that. His thumbprint on the wine is letting it be what it is. The grapes come from the namesake small town in Mendocino and the vineyards are a field blend of Carignane and Petite Sirah, that is to say the field is planted to that mix of vines. Leo ended up with 74% Carignane and 26% Petite Sirah and he used gentle, traditional wine making techniques and native yeasts to create this delicious rich and rustic red table wine with its flavors of sweet red cherry and strawberry mingling with notes of Kirsch, smoke, and licorice. It has a lower alcohol (13.5) balanced with the right acidity to leave you wanting another mouthwatering taste. ~ Stuart

Flore de Moscato Moscato, California $9.91 Muscat based wines are the favorites of some of our customers here at Imbibe. Just as a beautiful woman cannot be described in one word and classified in one dimension, so too this delightful offering from The Salt of The Earth winery in Madera. The Flore de Moscato is made with a blend of orange muscat and muscat canelli grapes that are picked, quickly crushed and fermented, then chilled to create a wine that will not be simply called a moscato. With a slightly higher alcohol content, it has a deeper flavor than some of its Italian counterparts. It is lightly sweet with a refreshing sparkle that drinks excellently as a first glass in the warmth of a Bakersfield day. So good on its own that it also will accompany fruit, spicy cuisine, and even be a pleasant end to the evening with dessert. ~ Stuart

2010 Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone, France $24.99 I discovered this wine early this year at a trade tasting in Los Angeles. North Berkeley Wine Importers have a simple but great philosophy, “Each bottle of wine we import should be as close to the truest expression of an individual site as can possibly be captured - wine that is both natural and terroir-driven”. That says it all about this wine. Just like its Chateauneuf counterpart, this incredibly luscious Cotes du Rhone is wrapped in purple silk and delivers mouth filling, saturated black fruited flavors, silky, earthy tannins and good structure. A selection of older vine Grenache and Mouvedre give this wine a great backbone. Fine wine is always a sum of its parts; the land that feeds the grapes, the gentle touch of a winemaker and time, wine’s most ultimate master. ~ David 20

2010 Bridlewood Pinot Noir Monterey Country, California $14.99 Bridlewood’s 105 acre estate in Santa Ynez is just the beginning. Winemaker David Hopkins has been making wine for over 20 years. His wines speak to the kaleidoscope of flavors that unfold along the Pacific Coast from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. David knows exactly how to find the best grapes in the hidden corners of the Central Coast. He visits the vineyards; gets to know the winegrowers. When I met David, he said it best, “Winemaking is less about the latest technology and more about taking your time. It’s about guiding the wine, and letting it carve out its own path to express the terroir of the region”. His wines do just that: let the terroir do the talking. This Monterey Pinot Noir shows dark flavors of raspberry and dark cherry with hints of caramel and toffee. You will also enjoy the floral and black pepper notes. As many of you know I love Pinot Noir and this wine for the money over delivers. ~ David

2010 Rodney Strong Vineyards Chardonnay Chalk Hill $18.91 The story behind this Chalk Hill Chardonnay dates back to 1962, some 20 plus years before the area qualified for AVA selection. Founding owner Rodney Strong felt that the cool influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean fog and the chalky-white volcanic soils had the potential to produce a Chardonnay that would show the terroir of the land, much like the white burgundies he drank during his years in Paris. These soils impart the 100% Chardonnay with its mineral note backbone, complimenting the complex flavors of citrus, ripe apples, and pie crust. Nearly all of the wine is fermented in French oak barrels and undergoes malolactic fermentation. That little that does not adds a crisp, dry acidity to the refreshing finish. ~ Stuart

2007 La Maia Chianti Lina, Italy $19.91 Wow, what a steal! This is by far the best Chianti below $20 dollars that we’ve ever found! Complex and enticing aromas lead into an extremely well balanced and interesting wine. This 100% Sangiovese with a DOCG designation ensures the highest quality guarantee by the Italian government. Trust your palate in this situation; this is a most elegant and intriguing Chianti. Very much reminiscent of an old world wine, the first glass of this will bring you right to the motherland. ~ Anthony

2009 Chateau Domeyne St. Estephe, Bordeaux, France $32.99 This wine is one of the best values (if not THE best) in Saint Estephe. Located next door to Calon Segur and with a new owner, Claire Villars; this is a property to keep an eye on. The 2009 is the finest Chateau Domeyne yet produced. The blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine a amazing concentration that is common for the 2009 vintage. Loads of currant, cedar, tobacco and great structure. Wine Spectator scored the wine 94/100. This could be the value of the 2009 vintage in Bordeaux. I will let you know we only have 10 cases and it won’t last long. ~ David

2010 McNab Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendocino $15.99 McNab Ridge wines are the product of the Parducci family who have been producing wines from Mendocino for over 70 years. Following in the steps of his grandfather John, Rich Parducci’s wine follows Granddad’s style that is summed up by “...wine that gets people to ask for a second glass.” To achieve this with the 2010 vintage Rich started with a blend of 90% Cab and 10% Petite Sirah and aged it for 14 months in a blend of American and French oak. The wine starts with scents of black cherries, tobacco, and the creamy vanilla of the oak. The mouth shows dark fruits and depth. The profile is solid, the finish is smooth and we Wine, Spirits, Beer, Cheese, Cigars, Wine Storage, Wine & Beer Bar, Events, Education, Gifts, Accessories 21

2009 Big Vine Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley $16.99 One of the hallmarks of Imbibe (and something I love to brag about) is our owner’s ability to find the new winery that is creating a wine that shows an ability and taste beyond its years. Usually when we talk about a winery and a name so aptly matched, there is a history of winemaking. Well David found a wine to match its name and this only the first vintage. Big Vine Wines is just that, producing wines from areas that are best for their respective varietals. Where else would they go for Zinfandel, besides the Dry Creek Valley? This wine has everything you could ask for in a Dry Creek Zinfandel - rich, ripe flavors of blackberry, briar and dirt with touches of pepper and a jammy mouth. It is a wine to pick up in a hurry because this vintage is already sold out at the winery but we’ve got it and you can have it – if you act fast. ~ Stuart

#79

2008 Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $64.99 I can’t think of a year this wine has not been on our Top 100 List. The 2008 is one of the wines of the vintage. Paradigm is located in the Oakville district which, in my opinion, is the best dirt in Napa to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. Owners Ren and Marilyn Harris are two of the finest people one will ever meet. Paradigm farms 37 acres, growing Cab, Merlot, Cab Franc and Zinfandel; all not to be missed. They have made their name on Cabernet and this 2008 is packed full of black cherry and berry with a touch of sweet toasty oak. The wines of Paradigm are always elegant, yet have great structure and impeccable balance. Paradigm is surely one of the standout properties in Napa Valley. ~ David

2009 Duas Quintas Douro $13.99 The Duoro region of Portugal produces this extremely fun bottle. The vineyards for this wine – Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bon Ares – are located in the heart of Douro’s Port-producing area. Ramos Pinto uses the traditional Port grapes Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional in this dry red wine. Red fruits jump out at the beginning followed by cassis, pepper, tobacco and pepper. It has intense blackberry with a wisp of vanilla, and a long, silky finish. The dryness of this wine refreshes the palate and leaves one ready for another helping of food. Try it with meat dishes with lots of garlic. ~ Anthony

2009 Bodegas Renacer Malbec, Argentina $19.99 Renacer was built in 2004 and is located in Perdriel in Lujan de Cuyo in the foothills of the Andes. The fruit for this wine comes from vineyards in La Consulta and Perdriel which have an altitude between 900-1,100m above sea level and poor soils. The vines have an average age of over 50 years and yields are less than 6 tons per hectare. Harvest is always done by hand with a double selection of both clusters and berries. The 2009 is a bright, deep ruby in color with purple hints. On the nose this wine gives intense aromas of blueberries, blackberries and boysenberries with touches of mocha. The palate is rich with black fruit, cassis flavors, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. A juicy mouth feel with plenty of rounded tannins and a persistent finish. Renacer is complex and structured with a long aftertaste. Quite delicious; this is the type of wine that gives Argentine Malbec its good name. ~ Dan

2010 Columbia Crest H3 Cheveaux Red Blend $14.99 This Bordeaux inspired red blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon, is a perfect Washington estate bottling that exemplifies the region’s terrior and climate. Washington State’s wine regions are not exposed to too much heat thus a fully developed fruit can be harvested, without becoming over concentrated. This bottle yields a perfect amount of blue fruit such as blueberries and boysenberries with just the right amount of oak to the regiment. The oak then softens out the wine to make a smooth velvety body. ~ Anthony

2011 Tariquet Classic Ugni Blanc, France $9.91 Known more commonly as Trebbiano, Ugni Blanc is the most widely planted white grape in all of France and is often used in the production of Cognac and Armagnac. This particular wine made the list because not only is it a unique blend of unfamiliar grapes, but it is also an outstanding everyday quaffer that over-delivers for the money. An intense dry fruity white, that shows bright notes of spring flowers and citrus with subtle hints of tropical fruit. Try it as an aperitif or with starters like seafood and salads. ~ Dan

#84

2009 Beringer Knights Valley Red Blend $22.99 Beringer is a household name in the Knights Valley region of the wine world. Instrumental in bringing about the recognition of Knights Valley as a fully recognized AVA in the mid 1980s, Beringer’s roots were established long before that, beginning in the early 1960s. This bottling, a blend of mostly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a standout wine from Beringer. It is the first wine from Beringer to ever make our list. I have tasted a lot of Beringer wines over the years with the best being outstanding; but you have to pay for it. This wine is loaded with aromas and flavors of blackberries, blueberries, plum and spice and is furthered by the graphite minerality Knights Valley is known for. I love the sweet, lush finish ~ Anthony

2010 Sequana Vineyards Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands $29.99 Sequana Vineyards, named after the Franco-Roman goddess of the river Seine, produces only Pinot Noir from single vineyards in the Russian River Valley and the Santa Lucia Highlands. Imbibe is pleased to add this wine to our Pinot collection and present it to you. Winemaker and Pinot Noir specialist James MacPhail has complete control over these limited production wines from farming to production. His Santa Lucia Highland Pinot displays the classic qualities of this renowned region with flavors of strawberry and cranberry and touches of a rhubarb and Bing cherry tartness. It is a full bodied wine that stays silky and rich through the finish. ~ Stuart

2010 Milbrandt Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Traditions, Washington $14.99 After growing some of eastern Washington’s most wanted grapes for over a decade, Butch and Jerry Milbrandt followed the path of many a grape grower. They started to make the wines they wanted with the grapes that others had been winning rave reviews with. It was time to take advantage of the low rainfall and long sunny days of the Wahluke Slope on the border of the Saddle Mountains and the Columbia River and get their own high scores. The 2010 Traditions Cabernet is a smooth, rich wine with classic Washington Cabernet flavors. Aromas of ripe plums and blackberries combine with flavors of mocha and those famous Washington cherries. The gentle tannins give way to a full finish that pairs well with roasted meat and your backyard grill favorites. ~ Stuart

2011 Apothic Red, Red Blend, California $10.99 This will be the second year we have included Apothic in our Top 100 list; and the reason remains the same – it’s a great easy drinking red wine. No food is required but it fits in with a BBQ anytime. The brambly spice of Zinfandel, dark fruit flavors of Syrah, the bold notes of Cabernet Sauvignon and the smooth elegance of Merlot unite to create this captivating red blend. Apothic Red reveals intense fruit aromas and flavors of rhubarb and black cherry, complemented by hints of mocha, chocolate, brown spice and vanilla. A plush, velvety mouth feel and smooth finish round out this intriguing, full-bodied red blend. ~ Dan

Mia Dolcea Moscato di Asti, Italy $14.99 On any typical Bakersfield summer day, where everyone is almost always commenting about the heat, thoughts drift toward the coast with cool breezes and gentle days. Far reaching thoughts will go to the Mediterranean coast of Italy. At least that is where Imbibe went for the latest addition to our impressive list of Moscatos. This Mia Dolcea is from the famed Asti region of Northern Italy and the vineyards are DOCG, which is the Italian government’s highest rating. The wine is 100% Moscato and at only 5% alcohol, drinks sweet and gentle. The light effervescence releases aromas of pineapple, dried apricot, and honey. On the palate this will gently evolve into flavors of peach and nectarine with a light finish of jasmine. A wonderful wine to share with friends and conversation. ~ Stuart

#89

2009 Marc Bredif Chenin Blanc, France $18.99 Just as with Belgian beers made in monasteries and Dom Perignon putting bubbles in wine, wine history in the Vouvray region of the Loire valley is indebted to the church. Since the 4th century, monks have planted the vineyards, selected the finest growths, and made decisions over the years that have eventually led to the current quality and deliciousness of the wines. Chenin Blanc is the one grape grown in the clay and limestone soils of Vouvray and Marc Bredif produces a wine that is consistently one of the most sought after here at Imbibe. For those of you looking for something different than Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, this wine fits the bill. The wine will give you great fruit notes in the nose leading to a subtle palate of quince and white flowers. There is great fruit to this wine but it is not overly fruity due to its balanced acidity. It is also a white wine that holds well in your cellar for the next few years. ~ Stuart

2011 Edna Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Central Coast $11.99 There are so many very pleasant and delicious wines from the central coast, no matter what varietal is your favorite. And the name Edna Valley Vineyards seems to always come up in all those lists. In our offerings of Sauvignon Blanc, Edna Valley is right there, front and center, with another fantastic offering. The 2011 bottling of Sauvignon Blanc is a very balanced wine, with rich citrus and tropical fruit flavors. You’ll find orange zest, lime, and splashes of grapefruit complimented by notes of fresh cut grass. The wine is very crisp and enjoys a nice mineral undertone, thanks to the seashell and calcium soils that are the hallmark of the Edna Valley region. ~ Stuart

2011 Lincourt Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills $17.99 Whenever I get the chance to show wines to our customers who are looking for a great Pinot or Chardonnay from the Santa Barbara area, I go to Lincourt Chardonnay for it is both opulent and lively. The nose is fresh and vibrant with apples, toast, grilled almonds and guava. The palate is lush and firm with substantial weight and 4140 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93309 | 661.633.WINE (9463) | www.imbibewine.com | since 2009

length. Many have followed Bill Foley; he first founded Lincourt in 1996 in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara, which was, at that time, largely undiscovered. Today it is one of California’s most coveted cool climate viticultural regions. I love to mention Bill Foley’s name and the wines he produces. My favorites of his are the wines and vineyards named for his daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. ~ Stuart

2010 Amalaya Vino Tinto, Argentina $14.99 Amalaya Malbec is an exquisite reflection of the unique weather and soil conditions in Argentine’s Northern Calchaqui Valley. Amalaya is part of the Hess Family Estate and is produced by the same winemakers who make the wines at Bodega Colome, considered one of Argentina’s fines estates. This blend has hints of juicy black fruits, plum and of course that earthy herb quality one expects from an Argentine bottling. While the tannins are soft and supple, they still exhibit enough strength to keep a balanced wine. This is the red wine to indulge in when one is looking for a well balanced drinker of ample quality without feeling guilty on a busy Tuesday night. This wine is always a best buy or scores 90+ points by all wine credits. ~ Anthony

2008 Chateau Vrai Canon Bouche’ Canon-Fronsac, Bordeaux $29.99 Wow, what a wine. Robert Parker says it is “A superb over-achiever as well as a sleeper of the vintage”. This is the finest offering from the Canon-Fronsac appellation. This wine was made from remarkable low yields giving it stunning concentration. A full bodied wine with sweet blueberry and boysenberry fruit intermixed with licorice and graphite notes. Vrai Canon Bouche has been on a roll since the 2003 vintage. Located just west of Pomerol, the wine is 98% Merlot. Chateau Vrai has been owned by the Roux family since 1953 with the help of consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, who has been working in Bordeaux since 1982. Today Stephane consults for over sixty wineries and makes wine in nine different countries. This wine over delivers and is one of my favorites. ~ David

2007 White Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma $29.91 When I tasted this wine and noticed it was from the 2007 vintage, I took all they had. As I asked questions about White Oak, I learned they have over 750 acres of vineyards in Napa, Alexander Valley and Russian River to pick from. Their wine maker is Bill Parker who made his name at Matanzas Creek in the 80’s. This is an old name, but if you’ve been drinking as long as I have you will remember it. This wine is elegant with aromas of black cherry and toasty oak and wonderful flavors of pomegranate, dark cherry and currant that linger for a long finish. I love this wine for it is old school winemaking with only 14.1% alcohol - something you will be hard pressed to find in today’s winemaking. ~ David

2010 Brander Sauvignon Blanc Mesa Verde $12.99 The fifth year of this single vineyard-designated Sauvignon Blanc from the Santa Ynez Valley! Reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc from Down Under, this vintage is herbaceous and shows aromas of grass and grapefruit with hints of juicy fruit gum! The Mesa Verde vineyard is at a lower elevation, near the Santa Ynez River. This is the best of Brander’s 2010 Sauvignon Blancs, and the price is very good. It’s rich and stylish; especially considering it never saw any oak. Brisk in acids and minerals, it offers flavors of citrus fruits, peaches and white pepper. A clean, fresh contrast of pineapple and kelp, this has a green edge of the fruit and mouthwatering flavors that last. It will match Cantonese jellyfish or any grilled fish. ~ Dan Wine, Spirits, Beer, Cheese, Cigars, Wine Storage, Wine & Beer Bar, Events, Education, Gifts, Accessories 25

Light and elegant like every Pinot Noir should be, this Pinot starts with red cherries, cola and spice, followed by a unique acidity and tannin structure that is usually reserved for the $40+ price point. 2010 Clos de Nouys Vouvray, France $14.99 Acknowledged for its quality by top professionals in the Clos de Nouys is a 25 acre estate within the Vouvray appellation, consisting of vines averaging 35 years old. This is one of the oldest wine-making estates in the A.O.C. area: its wines were served on the Normandie transatlantic liner in 1936 and its parcels of vines were already listed amongst the best sites on the 1907 geological maps. Straw yellow and crisp in color with complex aromas of white flowers and marmalade, roused by hints of vanilla and honey. On the palate flavors of dried fruit dominate with a strong smoky note. The smoothness and refinement of this wine bestow it with an air of charming sophistication. This wine can be treated as an aperitif and is ideal when accompanied by quality desserts. ~Christa
