wireless

• The ELSPEC devices have ethernet ports (wired communication), which were converted to wireless using a WiFi-router.

The real-time monitoring and configuration is achieved via HTTP (web browser), while the acquisition of data is accomplished using PQSCADA software (acquires stored data using FTP).

• For the data acquisition and monitoring a small netbook was used that was wirelessly connected to the router.

Experimental Results Voltage and Current Measurements of the Ventilation Fan (VF) RMS Voltage of the Ventilation Fan (VF)

During the repairing process the motor didn’t operate and as result the RMS voltage was zero

2nd MARINe ELectrical InitiatiVE (MARINELIVE) International Conference on “All Electric Ships”

Experimental Results Voltage and Current Measurements of the Ventilation Fan (VF) RMS Current of the Ventilation Fan (VF)

• After the installation of the VFD the current RMS value is significantly lower. • This phenomenon affects the motor power consumption • Better power distribution in the ship.

2nd MARINe ELectrical InitiatiVE (MARINELIVE) International Conference on “All Electric Ships”

Experimental Results Power Measurements Active and Reactive Power of the LOP • Some fluctuations of the motor’s active and reactive power appear that occur during the nominal operation of the Lub Oil Pump • The decrease of the Active Power results in the respective rise of the Reactive Power

2nd MARINe ELectrical InitiatiVE (MARINELIVE) International Conference on “All Electric Ships”

Experimental Results Power Measurements Active and Reactive Power of the VF • The presence of the VFD, reduces the active and reactive power of the VF, almost by 22% and 43% respectively. • The active power reduction influences the power consumption of this motor

• The reduction in reactive power decreases the harmonic content and the reactive currents, causing a better operation of the vessel’s electric grid.

2nd MARINe ELectrical InitiatiVE (MARINELIVE) International Conference on “All Electric Ships”

CONCLUSIONS • The installation of the three measurements devices gave the possibility to obtain online recordings of the fundamental electric magnitudes.

• There is the prospect to proceed into further analysis concerning the harmonic content of both current and voltage and the THD as well.

• When the starting operation of one motor changed (Ventilation Fan), important reduction of the power consumption was accomplished.

• Significant reduction in the reactive power appears, improving the power quality of the vessel.

2nd MARINe ELectrical InitiatiVE (MARINELIVE) International Conference on “All Electric Ships”

CONCLUSIONS • The online monitoring highlights in details some significant phenomena such as the inrush currents and conclude whether there is the need to interfere to a specific motor operation.

• There is the possibility, with a more widespread use of these measuring devices, to observe the loads operation at different running conditions.
