The Crowned Lemur is sexually dichromatic (males and females are different colours). Females are mostly grey with flashes of orange on their heads and stunning orange eyes. The males are nearly all orange –red coloured apart from their white faces and a black stripe on their heads. Both sexes have tufts of fur on top of their ears.

These lemurs are only found on the northern tip of the island of Madagascar (near Africa). They prefer to inhabit the dry forests (rather than the rainforests that covers most of the island). Crowned Lemurs are mostly arboreal, spending all their time in trees and they are very agile often running along high branches.
Weight: 1.7kg - 1.8kg
These lemurs, like others, eat mostly fruit and leaves. The Crowned Lemurs also supplement their diets with flowers.
Diet: Omnivorous Fruit, leaves, insects.
Crowned Lemurs occur in groups of up to 10 individuals consisting of adults of both sexes and their offspring. Breeding is done in late spring and after a gestation period (pregnancy) of about 125 days females give birth to one young. They are completely dependant on their mothers for about 4.5 months when they are weaned and go on to the adult vegetarian diet. Sexual maturity is reached at about 20 months and they can live for up to 36 years.
