Heriot-Watt University was the pioneering university in Dubai International Academic City, where we are now entering our fourth academic year. The University was founded in Edinburgh over 180 years ago to provide graduates suited to the Scottish economy as it became increasingly industrial and international in its connectivity. And now here in 2008, noone can deny that the Dubai economy is also developing rapidly. Heriot-Watt University has found a home from home, offering degrees in business, finance, management, engineering and
IT that are matched to the demand in Dubai, and indeed the region. The same learning process, the same exams, the same degree as our home campuses – that is the basis of the internationally-respected education we bring to Dubai. Indeed students can transfer to Scotland to complete their degrees if they wish. The academic performance of our students in Dubai has been exceptional, winning more of their fair share of University prizes and degrees with
distinctions. These achievements, coupled with first jobs at “bluechip” companies in the region and the career progressions enabled by our post-graduate degrees, are clear demonstrations of our success – a success borne of the learning partnerships between our individual students and the University. Join us and, through hard work and shared commitment, enjoy the benefits of a Heriot-Watt University degree, wherever your career may take you.

Name: Neeru Kundvani Dubai – Edinburgh transfer student Course: Management with Marketing MA (Hons) “So far my stay at Edinburgh has been a great experience. I am a ‘people-person’ and have been able to meet students from all over the world; fitting in has not been a problem because of the great people.” “The University knows us well and has supported us throughout our time here in Edinburgh. The main concern my parents had was my accommodation, and that too was handled perfectly by the University. As international students we were given high priority according to our preferences. I was also assigned a mentor who has been very supportive.” “Even though studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, I believe Dubai has given us good prospects. In terms of education, we are not treated differently; as much as we thought being in the ‘bigger’ campus might mean completely different lectures or exams, we were mistaken – it’s all exactly the same, just colder!”

degree entry programme
13
INTRODUCTION By Olga Tabunschikova
Many students in Dubai opt for the Degree Entry Programme as a sound means of bridging the qualification gap between school and university. There are many reasons why students decide to join our popular foundation year. Firstly, some students need to improve their English writing skills or gain a better understanding of UK study methods or it may be that the certificate obtained in their native country may not be accepted by Heriot-Watt University. Finally, the Degree Entry Programme will help if school leaving qualifications do not immediately qualify students for admission to the first year of our management or engineering degrees. Heriot-Watt offers two different oneyear Degree Entry Programmes that are specifically tailored to the Bachelor degrees that we teach, giving our Degree Entry Programme graduates the optimum start in their university career. The two pathways have modules including:
Management Pathway Modules in: Introduction to Business Management Entry Mathematics
Engineering Pathway Modules in: Entry Physics Entry Mathematics The Programme is taught over two semesters, beginning in the middle of September and ending in June the following year. The students will pass end of unit tests in all subjects followed by final examinations in June. Both streams put strong emphasis on language skills – not only spoken English but written and academic English also. In addition to the academic modules, the course will include study skills and students will experience team work and improve their research skills. A combination of teaching methods is used so that all students will be prepared to progress onto the undergraduate programme of their choice. After completion of the Degree Entry Programme and gaining grade B in all subjects, students on their particular pathway will successfully progress on to their chosen degree course. I look forward to welcoming you to one of our two courses, designed with you in mind.

The School of Management and Languages
19
INTRODUCTION By Robert Graham
The School of Management and Languages, one of the largest in the University, is committed to providing our students with the education and personal development skills required to meet the needs of today’s international employers. The emphasis on student choice can be seen in the flexibility of the courses we offer in Dubai. Currently, Management students can choose from four different undergraduate degrees and one postgraduate degree. With the undergraduate degrees, there is a common first year where students take the same core modules allowing students to defer their ultimate subject choice beyond first year and effectively tailor their degrees to suit their needs and those of the modern business world. Our Masters degree in Strategic Project Management differentiates itself from other project management offerings by providing greater emphasis on the strategic requirement in managing a portfolio of projects to deliver organisational goals.
INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE The School of Management and Languages in Dubai attracts applicants from across the Gulf region, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia,
Russia and Kazakhstan, among other countries. There is also the opportunity for all our undergraduate students to transfer to our main campus in Edinburgh after their first year of study here in Dubai.
EMPLOYMENT SUCCESS Our excellent track record in graduate employment is proof that we produce graduates equipped with the skills and attributes required by employers in the Gulf Region and beyond. The MA in Accountancy and Finance, for example, is fully accredited by the ACCA, the global body for professional accountants, and many of our graduates are entering training contracts with professional firms and will qualify as chartered accountants. Our Strategic Project Management graduates have taken up various posts with an impressive list of companies and non-profit organisations and we hope that you will be joining them in pursuing a successful career after completion of your course.
learning. We encourage student participation in their classroom and tutorial environments and students are expected to have carried out independent study prior to the topic being discussed. We want our students to have views and opinions but these should be based on an understanding of the topic or issue before stating them.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Students are encouraged to express themselves clearly and articulately as communication skills are increasingly important in graduate recruitment and hence the stress we place on presentations and group working.
The emphasis in all our degrees is vocational and we endeavor to give students a broad-based education which reflects the British approach of critical enquiry and reflective

The Course Accountancy has often been described as the language of business and it has long been recognised that an understanding of accounting and finance is an essential prerequisite for those who intend to pursue a career in commerce, industry or public administration. The increasingly complex environment within which both financial and international business is conducted and the development and spread of computerised techniques continue to reinforce the need for such an understanding. The value of such studies is also recognised by professional accountancy and allied societies which offer, to approved graduates, substantial examination exemptions and reduced periods of pre-qualifying service. The Heriot-Watt course in Accountancy and Finance is a specialist degree, particularly well suited to those seeking entry into the accountancy profession and careers in financial services or financial management. The aim of the course is to encourage development of cognitive skills so that as students progress, they develop knowledge and understanding, learn to apply that knowledge and understanding, and become versed in the deeper approach to learning, evidenced by powers of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Successful completion of our Accountancy and Finance course provides the maximum number of exemptions from professional examination bodies including the ACCA.
first Year Students will follow introductory modules in four key subject themes of Accountancy and Finance, and Economics and Management. second Year Students will begin to broaden their study of Accountancy and Finance. The accountancy subjects include Financial Reporting, Management Accounting, and Group Accounting. The finance subjects include Investment and Portfolio Theory and Corporate Finance.
third Year Students undertake accounting studies in Auditing and Management Accounting. Finance subjects include International Financial Markets, and Financial Derivatives.
fourth Year The final year provides an opportunity for specialisation, with studies in International and Contemporary Issues in relevant Accounting and Finance areas. Students must also undertake a dissertation in an area of accounting or finance that is of particular interest to them.

INTRODUCTION By Dr Sarim Al-Zubaidy
Engineers use their imagination and knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry to devise, apply and manage the technologies that are fundamental to the well-being and advancement of society. Taking Dubai as an example, the construction of iconic buildings such as the Burj Al Arab, which reveals its supporting structure for all to see, and of course the Burj Dubai as it breaks world height records, would not be possible without significant input from wellqualified, professional engineers. And engineers will be fundamental to the evolution of Dubai’s manufacturing industry, this being accelerated by the creation of Industrial City. Furthermore all this must be undertaken with due concern for the impact of our lifestyles on climate change. The provision of such well-qualified and able engineers is at the core of Heriot-Watt University’s 180 year heritage, and we are proud to be able to offer our internationally recognised and respected degrees here in Dubai through our School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We are now entering our third year of operation of our undergraduate Mechanical and Electronic and Electrical Engineering degrees, and for the first year, we are delighted to be offering a BSc in Engineering and Management.
The performance of our students has been outstanding - for the second year running, a Dubai student has won the overall “best student” prize. This type of achievement proves that Dubai students are making the best of the opportunity that studying engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Dubai provides.
to our postgraduate Energy students, who will study via Distance Learning.
All our students enjoy an intimate teaching environment which blends conventional lecturing and tutorials with interactive on-line material in our Virtual Leaning Environment (VLE). Labs and extra-curricular projects such as our “Robot Challenge” develop knowledge and practical skills. Our final year individual student projects are designed to establish contact with local industry, and we will favour projects that seek to minimise environmental issues.
Graduates of our postgraduate degree in Energy are able to gain membership of the professional association.
Furthermore we provide access to probably the best e-library in the region, the same e-library as our students in Edinburgh, enabled by the power of the internet. Access to the e-library and the VLE is possible from both the campus and the student’s home, optimising the use of study time and allowing our student’s families to see something of the teaching and learning process we provide. Of course, this is invaluable

Our Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the IMechE in the UK, on the basis that the learning outcomes, the academic quality control processes and the standards achieved are all the same in Dubai as in Edinburgh.
We therefore welcome applications from well-qualified and motivated students who wish to benefit from a high-quality learning experience and gain a degree accredited by the appropriate British professional institutions. Such degrees will prepare them for employment in the engineering profession in Dubai, the region or beyond. Together we can make a difference.

Q: When will I receive my offer of study? A: The Admissions Office always endeavors to contact applicants with their offer, within two weeks of the full application being received.

A: If English is not your first language and you have not studied in English before (either at school or a previous institution) then you must provide proof of English language proficiency. Each course has its own requirement but the lowest we would accept is IELTS at 6.00 (or IELTS 5.0 for the Degree Entry Programme) or equivalent. All MBA applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency where English is not the first language.
Q: Do you allow students to transfer from other Universities and Colleges? A: Yes. Providing that you have studied and passed the acceptable subjects for our courses, we will consider all applications of transfer students. At the time of applying, transcripts or mark sheets detailing previous education must be submitted.
Q: Do applicants have to take an entry test? A: No. The only testing that we require is that of English Language proficiency where it is applicable.
Q: What’s an Honours year in Undergraduate study? A: Because Heriot-Watt is a Scottish University, it traditionally takes four years to complete an Honours degree. An honours year is an additional year of study at the end of the three years it takes to achieve a Bachelor degree.

Heriot-Watt University’s Shield The University’s origins are reflected in its shield, which dates back to 1889. The current version dates from 1966, when Heriot-Watt gained its University status by Royal Charter. The Shield is made up of two halves; that on the left is made up of six bars alternating in gold and blue, derived from the Coat-of-Arms matriculated in England by James Watt’s son, with superimposed on this a green tree, which is included in the heraldic design for the Arms of Watt and Watson in Scotland. The right half is derived from half of the Heriot Coat-of-Arms. The lower has half of the fivepointed star of the Heriot Shield in blue, and the upper has an open book to indicate the educational status of the owner.
