PERSONALITIES

PERSONALITIES Congratulations on your 30th year in the fashion industry. How does this achievement make you feel? First and foremost, I’d like to thank all of those who’ve supported me throughout the years; my friends, loyal customers, the people who wear my designs, the media, and everyone else. Without their support I wouldn’t have made it this far and would’ve stopped creating. I never think about my age and how long I’ve been in the industry, but now here I have been here for 30 years already. I feel really touched.

Hisato Suzuki Hisato Suzuki is International Director (Hair-Designer and Instructor) for Shunji Matsuo Indonesia. Well-trained in makeup for stage and photoshoot, he has also expanded in 14 years of hairstyling experience in Japan, Australia and Singapore. Hisato shares his thoughts with Tyara Putri about his passion and insights.

When did you first realise you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? Since young I want to become a hairstylist maybe it’s because of my mother. She’s a hairdresser too. I started learning hairdressing in Yokohama city when I was 17 years-old. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? If I’m not in this hairdresser field, I think I want to become a music producer. I thought of this when I was young. What is your own particular favourite hairstyle of all time? My favorite hairstyles are short bob. But there’re many types of bob. For me I prefer Mode bob. It’s more personal and cool style. How do you do about creating your signature style? Is it difficult to think up new ideas every year? Whenever I need inspiration to create new hairstyle I’ll go to art museum because there are many artists with their own style and creation. Of course sometimes ideas just pop up in my mind when I’m doing something.

We always wonder, how do you actually cut your own hair? Of course I cannot cut my own hair. Normally I’ll ask my colleague to help me out with this. What do you like best about your profession? I enjoy seeing my customers’ satisfaction smile whenever I’m done with the hairstyling. Can you name a personality whom, sometime, you would enjoy helping develop a new look? I would like to help customers who had bad experience in the past, create a new style and new look so that they dare to try out more challenging hairstyle in the future. What are the most common mistakes women make with their hair? I found that some customers feel that washing their hair everyday and blow drying is bad to their hair. Actually this is not true. If you use the right kind of shampoo and the right way to blow dry, this will boost your appearance. What are some of the most basic but effective hair care tips that you can share with us? After shampoo, apply some suitable leave-in conditioner and blow dry your hair. This will make a perfect hairstyle. Blow dry your hair is very important as you can control the effect of a hair cut or perm. Last question, what are your goals in near future? I want to open an academy in near future and help the young generation to develop their talents.

What are your inspirations? My inspirations are from everything around me. What encourage you to open hair studio in Jakarta? I can see there’s a lot of opportunities in Indonesia. While introducing Japanese hairstyle, I wish I can bring in something new to support hairdressing industry in Indonesia. Do you speak Bahasa? Is it hard to communicate with your client, language wise? I can speak a little bit Bahasa. Communication is not a problem because 90% of my customers can speak English. If there’s communication problem my staff can translate for me as some of them can speak Bahasa and Japanese. What was your most exciting hair-styling experience? I enjoy doing hairstyling in salon, but sometime we need to create a hairstyle that suit customer with many limitation like working rules and office regulations. Most exciting experience is on stage, because I can show my own creation without any limitation.
