One firm that specialises in remote courses claims that 6% more people passed a professional accountancy course in the UK when studying remotely than passed while regularly attending a university. On a global basis, the home studiers were 15% above the average, it says. Recent press reports confirm that distance learning is becoming increasingly popular. One report states that almost 46,000 students reading with a London-based university are today based remotely, compared with 36,000 in 2006. Recent global economic turmoil is cited as a key reason distance learning is growing in popularity. Put simply, it's cheaper to work from home than attend a university on a regular basis. Adding to that trend is a desire from overseas students to gain a UK qualification without the additional cost of living and working in the country.
