After about six months of waiting, the NFL preseason arrives to end the misery of football fans everywhere - until they realize how boring it is. Watching nobodies play badly against other nobodies is never as entertaining as their professional uniforms tell people it should be, but the Hall of Fame game is different. That's one that's worth watching, for a few reasons. -For one thing, it's the first of the boring preseason games. That might be it's biggest advantage. Viewers haven't yet been desensitized to the arrival of football. Excitement is still in the air. Your team's best players haven't been injured yet. Every team still has Super Bowl aspirations. It can be hard not to watch the first football game in months. -The Hall of Fame game is an event within an event, specifically, the Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies in Canton precede the game, and are about the most poetic thing you'll find in the sport. But if you're looking for something beyond the well-prepared speech, this game will give it to you. Each Hall of Fame inductee joins the commentating crew to discuss their experience. You can hear about exactly what they felt throughout the process - from ending their career, to being nominated, to being enshrined. Each player experiences it differently, and gives insight at the Hall of Fame game. -This is the game is where you'll be introduced to new teams. The Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans expansion teams have all been featured at the game. Another NFL expansion isn't out of the question (Los Angeles comes to mind) and this game is where fans will be able to see them step foot on the field for the first time, see their uniforms for the first time, and evaluate their players for the first time. And if it's your city that's just been blessed with a team, it's a must watch. -While it may only be an exhibition game, you could very well be watching future Hall of Fame players. More than a few have participated in the game, including Troy Aikman, Dick Butkus, John Elway, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Lawrence Taylor and Gene Upshaw. All of them were first ballot Hall of Famers. It's not just a chance to visit with the new inductees, it's an opportunity to wonder about the future. So maybe the quality of the game won't thrill you from beginning to end, but if you're like most NFL fans that look forward to a new season the day after the last one ends, the Hall of Fame game is the perfect way to get back into the swing of things. There's even something for the casual fan.
