On March 6, 2006, the city of Charlotte, North Carolina was chosen to be the home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The Hall honors major contributors, great all time crew chiefs and owners, and of course, great drivers. Charlotte, North Carolina broke ground in 2007, but did not open officially until May 11, 2010. Bringing hundreds of jobs and increased tourism, this was a great boon to the Charlotte area. The building is 390,000 square feet and 20 stories tall. The offices of Hall of Fame and their licensing division of NASCAR Digital Media. There are also tenants housed there, Lauth Property Group and Charlotte Regional Partnership. Dale Inman and Richard Petty introduced the very first artifact, that being a winning car driven by Richard Petty, the Plymouth Belvedere that he used to win 27 times in 1967. Charlotte owns the NASCAR Hall of Fame and was the responsible party for all the construction of the facility. It is run by Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. May 21, 2007 began site excavation and grading services. The designers were Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and Little Diversified Architectural was the architect. They were based right there in Charlotte. The stainless steel mobus which wraps around the entire structure was done by Technical Artistry and Ralph Applebaum Associates did the exhibition design. The building also houses a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, a gift shop just full of collectibles and the Hall of Fame CafĂƒÂŠ. They are planning an expansion, already which will include a ballroom for all those fancy events that they have in Charlotte. Daytona Beach, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia were also candidates to house the NASCAR Hall of Fame but lost out to Charlotte, North Carolina. Although Charlotte has released most information regarding the Hall of Fame voluntarily, the local Newspaper, the Charlotte Observer has asked the Attorney General of the State for his opinion to get full financial details for the entire project. Alabama had been mentioned as a potential state to house the Hall of Fame but fell out of favor perhaps because it houses the International Motorsports Hall of Fame which is not NASCAR related. Other cities that had been considered were Richmond, Virginia, Kansas City, Kansas and Detroit, Michigan. Those cities were given the bad news early, on January 5, 2006, leaving just the top three, Charlotte, North Carolina, Daytona Beach Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. Charlotte, of course, becoming the chosen one.
Charlotte had developed a slogan for the Hall of Fame being that "Racing was built here, Racing belongs here." To become eligible for the Hall of Fame, the driver must have at least ten years in NASCAR and to have retired at least three years before. If you were not a driver, it still means ten years of involvement with the racing industry. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and there have been admissions with less time involved. In that case, there were special circumstances.
