Almost every sport has at least one shrine, or museum dedicated to it. Most of them also boast a Hall of Fame where the past is celebrated with displays, artwork and special events. Being inducted into your sport's hall is an emotional, exciting part of every athlete's life, and many many people make the journey to visit these special spots of pure sports honor. The NFL, as it is of course known now, began as the American Professional Football Association in Canton, Ohio way back in 1920, making the city the perfect choice for the site of the Hall of Fame. The building was completed in 1963 with 19,000 square feet of space, now 45 years later, that building has grown to 83,000 square feet. Special anniversary events marking the 45th anniversary have been going on for 2008 and will continue until the end of the year. There have been many updates and upgrades not only to the building itself, but to the displays and other features that draw literally hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the country and foreign countries every single year. Players, coaches and others are inducted into the Hall of Fame by a 44 member Board of Selectors that is made of mostly sports writers. Induction ceremonies are emotional, heartwarming events and usually sold out well in advance. How does one get to the Hall of Fame? Practice. Okay, that is an old joke, but I could not resist. The Hall is open every day except for Christmas from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are extended summer hours from May 24 to September 1- where the Hall remains open until 8 p.m. Admission price for adults is $18, and there is a discount for those who live in the immediate Canton, Ohio area as well as other outlying neighborhoods. We know that the league is large now, and pulling in a phenomenal amount of money every season, but it started with a handshake in an old car dealership and two teams. One of those, the Canton Bulldogs, boasts the first two time football champion, further cementing the name of Canton in football history forever. From those humble beginnings in 1920, to the juggernaut that it has become now, football is filled with fevered fans that not only will root for their current favorites, they live, breath and die for the gloried history of their sport. Of course, there are plenty of other things to see and do while in Canton, but the main draw for the city and its citizens is the Hall of Fame and the tourists that it brings in for them each and every day. Whether you are a casual fan, or a dyed in the wool fanatic, the trip is well worth it- it is fun, educational and a chance to mingle with other like minded folks.
