2014 Sharesmile

Aim : The purpose of this project is to provide an appropriate service to encourage UAL students to do more volunteer. Problem : The number of UAL students who volunteer is low in comparison with counterpart universities due to a lack of funding and resources. Volunteering for UAL students is not a priority or high on lists of student interest. Background : UAL doesn’t have a volunteering program embedded within the community. However, UAL provides activities and occasional volunteer opportunities within the Student Union. Description : Sharesmile is a volunteering service that connects different volunteering opportunities with different types of art and design students. The project benefits from student insights as well as understanding student needs in order to develop future volunteering opportunities. My roles - Research, Interview and Co-discovery : Primary research, Secondary research - Data analysis, Concept generation and development - Persona and identify target audiences - User journey, Blueprint, Story board - Testing prototype, Feedback - Filming, VDO editing

type : service design

Discover Phase Research focuses on 3 main areas : 1. The role of Volunteer : This phase aims to identify the volunteering roles, Observing factors that influence people decision on volunteering

2. UAL system : The study aims to explore a deep understanding of the current system.

3. Nature of UAL Students : Exploring students’ attitude toward volunteering, barrier.

These are all tools and methods I used in this phase. User Diary, Semi-Structured Interviews, Expert Interviews, Self Ethnography, Co-Design and User-Shadowing.

Self Ethnography, Investigate at St. Panscras Community

From primary research, insights are divided into 2 groups. The first one is insights that influence people to be a volunteer. Another is obstacles that block students from joining volunteer.

What can influence people to be a volunteer?

Poster

1. The volunteering service is accessible and noticeable from touch point.

2. Participant think joining volunteer is fun and joyful.

3. The task has supported participant professional.

4. Participants volunteer as a group.

System part

1. Productive volunteer system.

14

2. The variety kinds of volunteering for students.

Identify problems : I collected, defined, categorized and analysed all problems in to 3 areas. I also divided problems by its size in order to find urgent issue. Surprisingly, most of barriers are connected.

Volunteer barrier at UAL

S

Attitude toward volunteer (student)

Personal issue (student)

Students think volunteer is a big deal(country-country)

No company

Lack of knowledge what does volunteer do?

Lack of confindence (language)

Problems from system (UAL staff and student)

Bad attitude of volunteer (especially “volunteer” word) Commitment to volunteer work (longterm) Don’t see future support or connection Don’t interest in that charity type

Don’t know where\how to join volunteer Lack of various type of volunteer to offer Cost to join (transport, meal etc while do volunteer)

Unreliable organisations

Busy (the most poppular) Not interested in volunteer( want to spend their free time on other interest.

M

Lack of UAL community sense (Due to 6 seperate campuses so it hards to cooperate to do something)

Student’s financial problem (more important thing to do ex. part time job)

L Lack of fund (for UAL) Not enough staff (to find volunteer work) Don’t have volunteer department

3 ideas sketches developed from chart.

15

Design Develop From insights, project direction prioritised on UAL system. The urgent problem defined as “UAL lacks of volunteering works to offer to students. In addition, 1 idea from 3 sketches is selected to develop as main service solution. Co-define method is used to define volunteering works that suit to UAL students.

16

Co-define test+ feedback

Personas 3 Identifying personas were created as target audiences. These personas help paint a picture of different reasons and approaches that drawn students’ attention to participate in volunteer.

17

Mdes Service Design Innovation Student at London College of Communication

Concept Develop Sketch developed to website which it works as main platform to collect volunteering missions in order to solve UAL system problem. A new service presents appropriate volunteering works based on co-define to match students’ interest. Website introduces user an opportunity to volunteer through 2 designing services pages. First, it displays for individual volunteer. Second, scheme designs for group volunteer. Service also shows progress of volunteering hours and supportive comments in order to encourage a sense of change-maker. Thus, sharesmile are able to tackle with many issues. 1. UAL don’t have volunteering service offering to students. 2. Students attitude toward volunteering. They think volunteering is a big issue. 3. Students want to do good with their friends.

Prototype Prototype was designed to test usability and accessibility while students navigated a website as well as observing students attitude toward volunteering task after using service.

Design Scenario Storyboards shows 2 possibilities from 2 main service journeys (individual and group volunteer).

22

Limitation and Suggesion The limitations are considered as the final prototype hasn’t received feedbacks from the Student Union and the service hasn’t been developed into business plan due to limited of time. Regarding the positive feedback from stakeholders, some are willing to be partner and the service has a possibility to be developed and receive positive feedback as a business plan. The service is in the early stages. There are opportunities to develop and to add more solutions to the service as the current service provides only two idea solutions. The service was designed to work as a main platform. Therefore, in the future, when new problems are indentified, new solution pages could be added infinitely. For instance, possible programs that could be added include mentoring. Currently UAL also provides a mentoring program. On the other hand, UAL mentoring mainly focuses on student life. Thus, suggestions to broaden the mentoring area to link with academic mentoring is possible. However, the scheme should be researched further and explored in detail. 23

2014 Coby

Intel ran a workshop with MDes Service Design Innovation and MA Interaction Design Communication students. Mdes Service design student cooperated with Ma. interactive design in order to think of a new service. Project Co(2)by Brief : How can Internet of Things (IoT) objects be configured and designed to repair a broken world? Detail : We created Coby, an Eco Furby able to measure your CO2 emmision through your personal purchases in Tesco. Idea solution : Coby is designed with the intention to raise awareness of each person’s carbon footprint and empower them to make more conscious decisions about their everyday shopping and how their choices might impact the environment. Coby eats your shopping receipts, calculates the sum of the carbon emissions of each product and produces a long burp- if the CO2 footprint is large or a short one if the footprint is small. Long term, it can grow sadder or stay happy depending on the CO2 footprints of your shopping history. The project was selected to show at Intel Summer Camp2014 My roles - Research : primary research and observation - Idea creation, concept generation and development - Service Blueprint Coby Clip

Camden project

LCC student team with Camden Council worked on exploring a new service for elderly in Somers Town. Description : Our team aims to help isolatable elderly accessing the information from Camden council. We definded corner shop as touch point because even if the people is isolated, they still need to go to corner shops to buy some food and newspapers. As a result, Our service worked as channel to spread information from Camden Council by providing tool and service for elderly in corner shop. My roles - Research information, Interview, field observation - Helping create Co-design tool - Brainstorm for concept generating and developing - Persona, Prototype and role play

Discover Phase To understand elderly and Somer town areas, we interviewd elderly at Great Croford with our Co-design tool inorder to find insights. Team also joint and investigated elderly at St.Panancras lunch club.

type : service design

28

We observed a whole Somer Town area. We also visited library, pub, corner shops and community centre in Somers town as further interview.

From research we found that, the elderly have these three problems: isolation, communication, and access the information. Still, there is a gap between Camden council and elderly despite well-covered services by Camden, even considering massive budget cut. We decided that the corner shop was our touchpoint. Because even if the people is isolated, they still need to go to corner shops to buy some food and newspapers. So that corner shop functions as hub for providing and connecting elderly through the world.

29

Mdes Service Design Innovation Student at London College of Communication

As a result, we interviewed all corner shops in Somer town area and drew a map that it categorized cooperation level. The red point shows interested on joining while the yellow dot is more willing to join with benefit, the blue dot doesn’t interest in the program.

30

Idea solution The idea was developed through improving a conventional notice board by introducing a compact format for leaflet, to be placed in a corner shop. The service also provided a telephone at a corner shop which enables the elderly to contact information source directly also emerged. The telephone has alphabetical buttons that match to each alphabet on the notice board, and each contact number is modified when information on the board is replaced. This maintenance is a responsibility of a corner shop.

31

Mdes Service Design Innovation Student at London College of Communication

Prototype

Feedback Given a feedback, we modified a responsibility of a corner shop. A telephone can be intimidating to the elderly so that a corner shop may need to assist during their usage. Furthermore, this service can be a burden to a shop staff. An incentive scheme linked to the payment to the council would justify the additional workload. In order to operate this system each corner shop is required to register. Camden Council can monitor whether the service is working appropriately.

2014 Walk home togeter

Brief

: How to encourage people to do more outdoor activity?

Target

: MA. International design students

Problem : Most of graphic design students spend a whole day working on their computers that cause a health problem. Aim : This project aim to encourage design students to do more outdoor activity for better health

Discover Phase

Insights from interviews and researches show that students lacked of motivation to do outdoor activity and their schedules are tight. However international students still have a sense of traveler, they still love to explore a city.

type : service design

34

Due to students’ tight schedule, idea solution aimed to encourage design student to explore the city as part of their ordinary routine. The idea of walking home one station from the university (Elephant and Castle) to the next station has been considered. However, after I interviewed and tested a walking map idea, I found a great insight that international students have a bad attitude about Elephant and Castle area. Most international students worried about safety issue if they have to walk alone in Elephant and Castle area.

I surveyed area. Flags pointed attractive spots.

35

Mdes Service Design Innovation Student at London College of Communication

Idea solution From my research, I developed “walk home together service that it groups students by matching students who expect to leave LCC at a same time together. Students can create or join other student route and explore this area safety by the map that shows attractive places around this area. Also gain more social skill.

How to use a dvd player (for my mom)

type : print

Description :

Numerous senior people have problems using technology devices such as smart phone. In my case, my mom always confuses with many buttons on remote control. When she starts using a DVD player, she always forgets how to use it. So I though, I should design something to help her.

After observing my mom tried to turn on DVD player ( and gave up after she spend too much time), I found that there were confusion on messy unknown plugs and she couldn’t prioritize which button she should went through.

My solution was an illustrated manual book. The whole manual was displayed by clearly pictures. So it is easy for her to understand a whole process. I also labeled all plugs in that area to differentiate types of plugs. 52

2012 Mini Magic Paper 1# : freestyle swimming

type : video Description :

This is my personal experiment on paper. It developed from my BA thesis project in 2008. In this time, I try to think of a new different folding paper technique. By adding more folding layers, the effect interestingly animates in different way. Story inspired by 2008 swimming olympic.

2008 Magic paper

type : video

Description :

This was a few part of my thesis project for promoting magic festival (base on real festival but not for real commercial). From “Magic” theme, I’ve been thinking about how people could participated with easy trick and still felt amused. I had found from science book, when paper pulp absorb water, they will extend themselves straightly and their folds are going to be unfolded. By this theory, I’ve designed easy A4 pattern which everybody could download, print cut and play.
