DOWDY-FICKLEN STADIUM Home of the Pirates
2011 East Carolina Football Fan Guide
THE EARLY YEARS The original plan for ECU’s current football facility was announced Oct. 7, 1961, by Dr. Leo Jenkins, Chancellor of the College, at a meeting of the Society of Buccaneers. Within a year, $283,387 had been raised, although the goal had been only $200,000. With the funds in hand, Ficklen Stadium was built. The James Skinner Ficklen Memorial Stadium was dedicated Sept. 21, 1963, as East Carolina defeated Wake Forest, 20-10. The original stadium consisted of the permanent stands on the south side, a small press box, and the old lighting system, which was removed after the 1974 season. Total cost was $300,000.
THE NAMESAKES In April 1994, Ron and Mary Ellen Dowdy, of Orlando, Fla., announced a $1 million gift to the
ECU Educational Foundation. The gift went toward the ongoing expansion of ECU’s football stadium, which was renamed Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
BAGWELL FIELD Since graduating in the early 1970s, Al and Debby Bagwell have been gracious friends of the university, with Al serving on the Pirate Club’s Executive Committee in 1994-95 and being appointed to the University’s Board of Visitors in 1998. The couple from Lake Gaston, Va., was honored in 1997 for their gift to the Pirate Club’s Shared Visions Campaign. For their contributions on behalf of the University and to the ECU Educational Foundation, the Bagwell’s name became a permanent mark on the ECU landscape as the field is now recognized as Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
LAST EXPANSION After additions on the north side (upper deck in 1998 and club-level seating in 1999) increased

the stadium’s capacity to 43,000, East Carolina completed a 7,000-seat expansion project in the east end zone that pushed the seating availability to 50,000 in time for Ruffin McNeill’s Pirate head coaching debut in September 2010. In addition, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium received an aesthetic enhancement the same year when 10,200 purple chairback seats replaced existing bleachers inside the 35-yard lines on both sides of the facility.
SCOREBOARD A new 84-foot by 28-foot high definition-rated score/videoboard accompanied the 7,000-seat end zone expansion in the summer of 2010. The new board, which ranks among the 25 largest in college football, features state-of-the-art video capabilities for fan enjoyment. In addition, a new auxiliary scoreboard was added to the Murphy Center on the west side to give spectators easy visibility from all locations.

HEAD COACH RUFFIN McNEILL 2011 East Carolina Football Fan Guide
Entering his second season as head coach of the Pirates
RUFFIN McNEILL led the Pirates to record-setting performances during his first season.
W
hen former Pirate defensive back and assistant coach Ruffin McNeill came home last year, the return offered a promise of renewed Purple and Gold passion — not to mention plenty of points. McNeill, who starred as a four-year letterman in the late 1970s and completed a 10-year stay at Texas Tech, was appointed East Carolina’s 20th head football coach Jan. 21, 2010. The Lumberton native delivered on those pledges during his initial campaign, which also marked his 25th overall season coaching at the collegiate level. Despite inheriting a program that lost 34 lettermen off the previous year’s squad — the most of any FBS program in America — the selfdescribed football "lifer" guided the 2010 Pirates to six wins and qualification for a fifth-straight bowl game, an accomplishment unprecedented in program history. While playing one of the top 50 most difficult schedules in the country, McNeill’s six victories ranked seventh nationally among all first-year FBS 6
coaches. In addition, his five league wins stood second — trailing only Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher’s six. Capacity crowds at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium also were treated to an exciting, high-scoring and prolific spread offensive scheme that enjoyed a record-breaking campaign in 2010 — shattering or at least matching 29 team or individual standards. ECU’s offense also ranked among the nation’s best statistically — finishing eighth in passing offense, 16th in scoring offense, 25th in total offense, fifth in offensive red zone efficiency, sixth in fourth-down conversion percentage and 18th in first downs per game. Although the unit featured 11 first-time starters, McNeill’s offense scored a single-season record 60 touchdowns (39 pass, 21 rush). Overall, the Pirates tallied 62 touchdowns and 478 points, which also were school standards. During his first year at ECU, McNeill enhanced his reputation as a father figure, promoting a family-type atmosphere and providing the disciplined instruction on the field that marked his long tenure at Texas Tech. Before returning to his alma mater, McNeill concluded the 2009 season as the Red Raiders’ interim head coach by rallying No. 21 Texas Tech to a 4131 victory over Michigan State at the Valero Alamo Bowl Jan. 2 after the dismissal of Mike Leach. In addition to helping the program complete the year with nine triumphs, McNeill’s steady hand was responsible for Texas Tech’s first season-ending three-game winning streak since 1995. The 2009 campaign marked his 10th season as a member of Leach’s staff and second full year as the defensive coordinator. He served the final nine games of 2007 in that role on an interim basis, before taking over officially in 2008. A charter member of Leach’s initial coaching staff in 2000, McNeill began his career at Texas
Tech as linebackers coach during the 2000-02 seasons, before taking over defensive tackles and special teams duties in 2003. A four-year letterwinner at East Carolina from 1976-80, McNeill was a three-year starter at defensive back and was the team captain for two seasons. He helped lead ECU to the Southern Conference Championship in 1976 and an Independence Bowl berth in 1978 — the school’s first in what is recognized as the modern era. He graduated from East Carolina in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned a master’s degree in secondary counseling from Clemson in 1987. McNeill, 52, and his wife, Erlene, have two daughters: Olivia (20) and Renata (30). Olivia is a senior at Appalachian State.

PIRATE TRADITIONS 2011 East Carolina Football Fan Guide
Show your Pirate pride
B
eginning in 2007, the Pirates adopted a new set of flag-raising ceremonies at home football games. These new ceremonies reflect the historic Pirate traditions of battle at sea when pirates would hoist the colors of the crew’s captain to identify themselves when attacking other sea-faring vessels. In keeping with these Pirate traditions, East Carolina will hoist the colors (raising the Jolly Roger) just before the opening kickoff at home Pirate football games. Following the end of the third quarter, the Pirates will raise the “No Quarter” flag to start the fourth quarter of home football games. The flag-raising will be accompanied by thrilling music, and fans are encouraged to join in the excitement. Show the opponents the Pirates will give NO QUARTER by crossing your arms in imitation of the skull and crossbones! Cheer loud, stomp your feet and show the team these Pirates will give no quarter! The Pirates’ red No Quarter flag will be flown from the beginning of the fourth quarter throughout the remainder of the game to show that the Pirates will fight on until the end, giving no mercy to their opponents.
JOLLY ROGER The Jolly Roger refers to the “colors” or flag of a pirate ship’s captain. Pirate vessels looked like all other merchant ships of that era. Once a pirate
NO QUARTER If a ship refused to surrender, they risked the wrath of the Pirate ship’s crew. Once a battle began, the Jolly Roger was lowered and replaced with a “No Quarter” flag signifying that the Pirates would now take no prisoners and give no quarter to their enemy. The No Quarter flag often featured the skull and crossbones or other characteristic marks of the Jolly Roger. The two flags could easily be distinguished, however, due to the No Quarter flag bearing a deep red field for the background, as opposed to the common use of black on the Jolly Roger.

was in striking distance of a targeted vessel, they would declare their intentions by showing their true colors. Various pirates had different flags, which were well known to those who sailed the sea. Most depictions of the Jolly Roger include a skull and crossbones, generally seen on a black field. The Jolly Roger was used to instill fear into one’s enemies, and in many cases ships would surrender to a band of pirates when this fearsome banner was raised.
