[“THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CHOOSING A WEB HOST”]
An Introduction To Web Hosting If you’re looking to run your own website, then it’s pretty much inevitable that you’re going to need to find a web host who will host your website for you. The problem is nowadays, that there are so many different hosting options and hosting companies to choose from that it can be someone overwhelming – especially if you’re just starting out. This guide aims to make choosing a web host an easier process by helping you to become more knowledgeable about what to look for and what to avoid. By the end of the report you should be able to walk away with an idea of what features you may need and where you might be able to purchase a hosting package to meet those needs. I say “purchase” because if you’re looking to run a business online, then using a free web hosting company is a REALLY bad idea!
Don’t Even CONSIDER “Free” Options! If you’re just starting out with your online business, it can be easy to think that choosing a “free” web host will be the best option for you – at least until you’re generating an income. THINK AGAIN! There are a LOT of things you can get for free on the internet but free web hosts are definitely something you should avoid at all costs. There are so many good web hosting companies out there charging less than $10 a month for a basic account, that it’s just not worth even considering going down the “free” route. What you need to understand is that free (in the world of web hosting) virtually NEVER means “free” and you’ll most definitely be “paying” for your hosting in one way or another. Often this will be through ads for other companies being placed “over your websites,” through excessive downtime, sluggish performance or simply because your “free” web host has decided to shut down their service without warning! If you can’t afford to shell out $10 or so per month to host your website then it’s probably worth seriously considering not starting one at all. Assuming that you don’t object to paying a tiny monthly fee, it’s time to find out what you need to look for when choosing a web host.

Types Of Web Hosting There are several different types of web hosting and it will depend on your particular needs as to which one is going to suit you best.
Shared Hosting Shared Web hosting is the cheapest type of hosting available. With shared web hosting, you're sharing a server with other clients of the hosting company. The hosting company will look after the managing of the server and you will simply manage your account on that server. The advantages of shared hosting -
Price – whilst this is the cheapest of all professional hosting options, it will suit most sites just fine. Monitoring – most good web hosts will monitor their shared servers to ensure that they’re up and running at all times. Even without monitoring, one upside of shared hosting is that if there is a problem such as downtime, other clients on the server will most likely be experiencing the same thing, so your hosts will know soon enough!
The disadvantages of shared hosting -
-
Flexibility - you may find that you have special scripts to install and your web host may be unable to accommodate you since they need to ensure that they maintain a stable environment for all the other clients on that server. Speed and Performance - this can also be an issue if one site or account on the server is receiving heavy traffic because they will tend to hog resources and slow down the server. Generally speaking, good web hosts will monitor such situations and take appropriate action against the offending site.
Reseller Hosting Reseller Web hosting is similar in nature to shared hosting. You're still sharing a server with other clients however you are able to host websites for other people and charge them a fee if you wish. With reseller hosting you get your own reseller control panel where you can set up new accounts for either yourself or your clients. In most cases you can set up as many accounts as you can fit within your disk space allotment and bandwidth allotment. Some reseller plans however do limit the number of domains or accounts you can host within your reseller

account so be sure to check into exactly what your limitations are if you choose to purchase reseller hosting. Reseller hosting can be a great way to get started hosting sites for others however there are some limitations and reseller hosting is still really another form of shared hosting. The advantages of reseller hosting -
-
Host multiple domains with their own Cpanel - Most web hosts these days allow you to host multiple domains on the one account even if you only have a low-cost shared hosting package. The catch in doing this however is that each domain is usually hosted under a single Cpanel account. Having your own reseller hosting account will allow you to have each domain hosted on a separate Cpanel account. This can have its advantages if you wish to move a single domain to a different host or server at a later stage. Setup new domains instantly – There’s no need to wait for your web hosts to setup a new account for any new domains you register because you can set these up yourself whenever you need them!
The disadvantages of reseller hosting -
-
-
Resource usage - Reseller hosting does not allow you to allocate resources to a particular domain or account and you're also subject to resource usage from other accounts under different resellers is on the same server. Therefore, if one account on the server is using a lot of resources all other sites on the server will be affected. Support – If you plan on selling hosting accounts on your reseller account, then you’ll most likely be responsible for supporting those clients too. If you’re not technically savvy, then this can be quite daunting and is often best left to the professionals. Technical Knowledge – If you’re not familiar with running your own website then it's probably not advisable to get a reseller account immediately. The reseller control panel contains a lot more options than a standard Cpanel and can be confusing for those starting out.
VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting VPS or Virtual Private Server hosting is almost like having your own dedicated server without the higher monthly cost. Many hosts offer a range of VPS plans which allow users to scale up or scale down their package depending on their current needs. This is great for sites or groups of sites which you think might grow fairly rapidly.
All Rights Reserved – 2012 Onwards
Page 7
[“THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CHOOSING A WEB HOST”]
Most hosts will have various VPS packages and this will allow you to tailor things like the amount of RAM, CPU and disk space allocations to meet your requirements. Unless you have a good degree of technical knowledge, it is strongly advisable to make sure your virtual private server is fully managed. This means your web host will take care of updating the server software with the latest versions and make sure everything is nice and secure. The advantages of VPS hosting -
Price - having your own VPS hosting account is similar to running a dedicated server but without the monthly pricetag. Easily scalable - since you can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any stage to meet your requirements (most hosts allow for this,) you’re only paying for the resources you’re actually going to use. Fully monitored - generally speaking, you Web hosting company will monitor your VPS and make sure that it is running at all times. This is not always the case with dedicated servers.
The disadvantages of VPS hosting -
Limited resources – you’ll be limited to the packages that your web host supplies and their packages may not always fit your exact needs (e.g. RAM vs CPU vs Disk Space) so there will most likely be a need to compromise a little.
Dedicated Hosting Dedicated Web hosting is by far the most flexible of all Web hosting but it is also the most expensive and will require a fair bit of technical knowledge. Dedicated hosting means that you have your own server dedicated solely to your own website or websites. This allows you to utilise all of the resources of the server to power your own websites and you are not affected by the possibility of other clients on the server hogging all the resources. There are various specifications you can get when choosing a dedicated server package (not unlike when you are searching for the best PC for yourself). Usually these are related to the CPU speed, amount of RAM and hard disk size.

Page 8
[“THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CHOOSING A WEB HOST”]
The advantages of dedicated hosting -
Full control - dedicated hosting gives you full control over your server. Generally speaking you can install whatever software you wish so that your scripts run correctly. Power and Performance – dedicated hosting gives you the ultimate in power and performance.
The disadvantages of dedicated hosting -
-
Monitoring - you may need to invest in a third-party monitoring service or subscription so that you're alerted to any situations in which your server goes down. This will depend on which hosting company you choose as some may in fact offer monitoring services. Backups - these often become your responsibility entirely. I recommend having a good backup system in place for all your important sites as well as backing up to a second hard drive on the server if at all possible. (Most hosts can add an additional hard drive to your server for a relatively small costs if one doesn’t come as standard.)

Your Web hosting Control Panel There are two main types of control panels used by the majority of Web hosting companies. They are “Cpanel” and “Plesk.” CPanel is definitely the most popular Web hosting control panel and is what I personally recommend to all my clients.
Cpanel Cpanel is by far the most common web hosting control panel and has a user-friendly interface. It can be a bit daunting at first but once you’ve been using it for a little while, you’ll realize that it’s very easy to find what you’re looking for and manage your hosting account. Here’s a screenshot of what the typical Cpanel interface looks like:

Cpanel allows you to setup and control many aspects of your website including setting up new email addresses, creating MySQL databases and adding subdomains etc. It is for this reason that I personally prefer to use Cpanel over any other web hosting control panel and would recommend for anyone starting out, this is the best option if possible. There are plenty of in depth video tutorials available which demonstrate the many features of Cpanel.
Plesk Plesk is another fairly common web hosting control panel (although it doesn’t seem to be nearly as popular as Cpanel.) Essentially, Plesk allows you to do pretty much everything that Cpanel does, but a lot of the instructions for installing scripts etc are more geared towards Cpanel. Really the choice of control panel is up to you but my personal recommendation would be to go with Cpanel if you possibly can.

Essential Considerations When deciding on a web hosting package, it’s important to have a bit of an understanding of the demands that your website might have once it goes live. There are two primary considerations here: bandwidth and storage space.
Bandwidth Bandwidth is the amount of traffic that your website receives during the course of a month. It includes all incoming and outgoing traffic - that is all downloads and uploads. If you intend to allow your visitors to download large video files you will need an account with a reasonable amount of bandwidth. The exact amount will depend on how many files and how big the files are.
Storage (Disk) Space In order to store your files on your hosting account you will need to have sufficient disk space available. Disk space works in exactly the same way as it does on your home PC. The amount of disk space you will require will again depend on how many files you plan to upload and how large they are. There are also a few additional things you’ll want to consider before choosing your host or package.
Uptime From time to time, it's inevitable that your Web server will be off-line. This is because there will always be times when certain maintenance tasks will require server to be rebooted or switched off temporarily while hardware is replaced or upgraded. Most good web hosts will offer a 99.9% uptime guarantee which essentially means that the server will be online and available 99.9% of the time. Ensuring that your web host is reliable and has a good uptime is extremely important if you wish to run a professional online business. Even small amounts of downtime can potentially result in lost customers, or frustrations for existing customers, so it's important to ensure any downtime is as minimal as possible.

Number Of Domains How many domains are you looking to host? If you are wanting to host multiple domains, and you’ve decided to go with shared hosting, rather than reseller, VPS or dedicated, then it’ll be necessary to look for a package that allows you to host more than one domain unless you wish to purchase a new hosting package for each domain. Generally hosting companies will call these “Addon” domains. Many web hosting packages these days allow you to host unlimited domains or at least more than one domain under the one hosting account. This can help to keep costs down as you don’t have to purchase a new hosting package for each new domain you want to host. For most people this is good option and causes no real issues, however there are a couple of drawbacks you should be aware of. In most instances, when hosting multiple domains under the one web hosting package, you will have one primary domain and any additional domains will be “addon” domains. From a visitor’s perspective there is no noticeable difference between and “addon” domain and the primary domain however there are some small differences for the site owner from an administration perspective. Firstly, you will only have a single Cpanel and all additional domains after the initial domain will be administered from the one Cpanel. This is really not much of a major issue for most people and at times can make it easier since you don’t have to constantly log in to multiple Cpanels. Secondly, it can be a little problematic if you have complicated scripts running on an “addon” domain and then later decide that you want to put the “addon” domain onto a hosting account of its own. Don’t get me wrong, it CAN be done relatively easily but if you’re not technically inclined, then it may be something you have to pay a small fee to have done for you because you may need to make replacements in the MySQL databases etc. However, if you’ve just got a few basic HTML pages then it should be a simple case of downloading them from the “addon” domain and re-uploading them to the new standalone domain.

[“THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CHOOSING A WEB HOST”]
When “Unlimited” Isn’t REALLY “Unlimited” Many web hosts nowadays offer shared hosting with “unlimited storage space” and “unlimited bandwidth” however you need to be careful with these types of offers and understand what they REALLY mean. No Web host can possibly offer “unlimited everything” - even if they say they do. The reality is, if you load up your hosting account with multiple domains and get any decent level of traffic, then there's a good possibility that you’ll exceed the allowable resource limits on your shared hosting account. If you operate a reasonably busy website and use up too much of your web server’s resources, then there’s a good chance that having unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth won’t do you much good because you will be overloading the server’s CPU and negatively affecting other users of that server. At that point your web host will most likely step in and limit your resources or ask you to upgrade to another type of hosting. Most hosts which offer “unlimited” space etc, will almost always place alternative limits on shared accounts. As an example, although Hostgator offers unlimited storage space, they limit shared accounts by the number of files (known as “inodes”) that can be stored on the account. Here’s a screenshot from their Terms Of Service page:
The other thing to be aware of is that if your account size increases past the set limits defined by your web host, you may find that your account is not automatically backed up as part of your hosts backup processes.

Useful Features To Look Out For Fantastico Fantastico is an excellent tool that comes as part of most hosting packages. Fantastico allows you to install a wide range of useful scripts by simply clicking a few buttons rather than having to manually install them. You'll easily be able to install WordPress, forum scripts, support desk scripts and the like without having to know all about FTP, MySQL and file permissions. It really is an easy way to install common scripts on your hosting account and a very convenient feature to have. Most good web hosts these days offer Fantastico as standard – even on cheaper hosting accounts.
MySQL Databases MySQL databases are pretty much a standard part of all hosting packages these days however the number of databases each package provides will vary. MySQL databases are used to store data such as posts for your WordPress blogs, membership script information, or any manner of possible data. Generally speaking, each script you install on your hosting account could require a MySQL database (this will of course depend on the type of script.) Ideally you’ll want to try and find a package which offers unlimited MySQL databases, as this will ensure you have room for expansion in the future.
Subdomains Subdomains are handy if you don’t want to have to go out and buy a new domain for every site you want to setup. An example of a subdomain might be http://dogtraining.myreviewsites.com In this example, you would only have had to purchase the domain myreviewsites.com and then you would setup a subdomain “dogtraining” Then you could also have subdomains like: http://acne.myreviewsites.com or http://weightloss.myreviewsites.com Many hosts will offer unlimited subdomains but it does pay to check their specs first before ordering if this is something you might want to do.

Support? Where Are You? It pays to check out a web host’s support processes thoroughly before you sign up to them. You don’t want to run into a problem down the track only to find that any calls for help go unanswered or take forever to be answered. A good way to find out how good a hosting company’s support is can be to ask around. Talk to others who use them about their experiences. Another way, although not always 100% reliable, can be to submit a (pre sales query) ticket and see how long it takes to get a reply and what level of detail they provide. The only problem with this is that the Sales Department of many hosting companies does not work 24/7 whereas their technical support staff may well do, so it can sometimes take longer to get a reply from Sales staff – depending on what time of day you submit your query. Some things to consider as far as support goes are: 24/7 Support It’s good to know that someone will be there to help when something goes wrong or you have questions. Most good web hosts offer 24/7 support but it pays to check just to make sure. If your web host doesn’t offer 24/7 support then it may pay to find one that does – especially if you live in another country than your web hosts. Phone Support Whilst phone support is generally not necessary (as almost all web hosts run some sort of support ticket system) it’s good to know that it’s available if you really need to talk to someone.

NEVER Rely On Your Web host For Backups! When it comes to backing up your websites you absolutely, categorically must take personal responsibility for this. NEVER, EVER, EVER rely solely on your web host for backups or assume that they will be able to provide one if something goes wrong. If you read over the terms and conditions carefully you will find that most web hosts will take no responsibility for data loss in the event of a disaster. Most will state that they provide backups as a “courtesy” and ultimately, the responsibility for maintaining your data and backups remains squarely in your hands. Here is a typical hosting company’s terms when it comes to backups and data loss: “Backups and Data Loss Your use of this service is at your sole risk. Our backup service runs once a week, overwrites any of our previous backups made, and only one week of backups are kept. This service is provided to you as a courtesy. We are not responsible for files and/or data residing on your account. You agree to take full responsibility for files and data transferred and to maintain all appropriate backup of files and data stored on our servers.” My personal recommendation is to invest in a tool that automates the backup process. If you rely on remembering to do backups manually from inside Cpanel, sure as eggs, the one time you put it off or forget to do it, will be the one time you’ll need it! Murphy’s Law! Click here for a great low cost backup solution that you can use to backup all of your websites and databases AUTOMATICALLY! The other important thing to be aware of with backup services provided by your web host is that even though they might say they provide “Daily Backups,” you will find that most will only actually KEEP the last day’s backup and then when the daily backup is performed the following day, the previous day is overwritten! This can be bad because if you don’t notice an issue with your website (perhaps it’s been hacked and you didn’t notice,) any “good” backup may already have been overwritten. This is the same with Weekly Backups in that each week’s backup overwrites the last week’s. That’s why I strongly recommend implementing your own backup procedures such as using software to automatically take care of things for you. It’s entirely up to you if you choose to do it manually but, if you do, just be sure not to “put off” doing it and definitely don’t rely on your web host to do it for you!

The Final Decision In order to make an informed decision about which web host to choose, you need to carefully balance the needs of your business against what you can afford. Just be careful not to base your entire decision around price! Be sure to put things into perspective. If you’re planning on running a successful online business, reliable hosting is probably one of the most important things you can invest on. Whilst you don’t want to focus solely on price, you don’t have to spend a fortune either. On the next page, I recommend two web hosting companies that have a great reputation and are very competitively priced. In summary: By now you should have some idea of why it’s necessary to actually spend at least some money to host your website. FREE is not an option unless you want to wake up one day and find all your hard work down the drain! (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!) So now that you’re armed with the additional information from this report, you should be in a better position to make an informed decision. Of course, you’re welcome to save yourself hours of research by checking out one of my two recommended web hosts.
