ONCE UPON A TIME DURING A SUPERFICIAL DAY _

Amoungst all the subjects in architecture school so far, ive always liked history, theory, construction and design. During my last four years I’ve realised that the subject most important and which is my personal favourite is architectural design. Listed below is how I’ve matured in thought and skill during my time in space so far -

Varanasi city study

SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN STUDIO - SEM #07

80m

Earth view of the existing site conditions

The entire studio’s focus was on the key principles of sustainability and performative architecture along with some pasive stratergies to rethink the so called “energy required.” As the site was located in the city of Varanasi, this project also called for a story and a narrative that revolved around the laughter and playfulness of the city. The same was then traslated into the built form that could then be dismantled and removed. Thus the entire building remains an ephimeral temporary shelter with a character just like the ghats of the city.

VARANSI CITY MUSEUM AND PUBLIC PLAZA

The museum is a waste management and flood museum and reflects the life of Varanasi during and after floods. The entire building is lifted up due to the site being on the flood plains and therefore the cut outs on the floor slab is supposed to inform the user the place and time one

is in. The entire building is made of steel with the structure on its exterior. The building has an exterior frame with colourful fabric and varansi sarees just like in elevation shown. These can be removed and placed anywhere on this frame.

This then brings out the playfull charecter of the building just like the city itself. The best way to be sustainable is to not build anything permanent and one day when the program calls for a change so will the building change and make way for the newer.

ON HISTORY Imortality is a story told through the fragments of the city. Ten thousand years from now, when we are no longer here, archaeology will speak on behalf of us. The evidence of this qill most likely represent our culture, which is why we need a greater critical mass of buildings that can be appreciated as spectacular architecture. we need more architectural examples to preemptively write the history of our future. -Citizens of no place
