Research offers New Hope for Women with Fibroid...

terine fibroid (uterine leiomyomata) are non-cancerous tumors consisting of fibers or fibrous tissue that arises in the uterus. It is the most common growth of the female genital tract. These tumors can be as small as a hen’s egg, or commonly grow to the size of an orange or grapefruit. It afflicts many women, especially from age 35 to 50. Discovery is usually accidental, and coincidental with heavier period, irregular bleeding, and or painful periods. In cases where the tumor’s size compromises other bodily function such as compression on the bladder or excessive bleeding, surgery may be indicated. The most common surgery is the hysterectomy where the uterus is removed. Uterine fibroid is a warning sign from our body of a hormonal imbalance. Why Estrogen Dominance? This occurs because of several reasons. First, many women in their mid-thirties begin to have anovulatory (non-ovulating) menstrual circles. These periods can be verified by checking serum or saliva progesterone levels the week following supposed ovulation. A low reading indicates a lack of ovulation. Without ovulation, the all important progesterone is not secreted, and the body is flooded in a sea of estrogen, setting up an estrogen dominant environment.

A Typical Case History of Hormonal Imbalance The typical story goes something like this: Janet started experiencing symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) during her monthly menstrual circle in her late twenties and thirties. She has some headaches, bloating, cramps, and feels irritable, but she can handle it. Sometimes she takes a pain killer to get rid of the symptoms and nothing more is done. Little did she know that PMS is a sign of estrogen dominance.

While the absolute level of estrogen is less in the body, her cells are exposed to excessive estrogen due to the severe deficiency of progesterone during menopause. Thirdly, our body is exposed to environmental estrogen found in our food and household goods. Commercially grown vegetables contain pesticide residues whose chemical structure is similar to estrogen, and commercially raised cattle and poultry are fed with a variety of hormones. Petrochemical compounds found in general consumer products such as creams, lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, hair spray, and room deodorizers are omnipresent. Such compounds often have chemical structure similar to estrogen. Lastly, chronic stress experienced by the modern woman leads to adrenal exhaustion and a reduced output of progesterone. The end result is clear - We live in an estrogen dominant world. This is the estrogen dominance that is a strong causative factor to endometrial cancer and fibroid.

As the years go by, her period becomes heavier and cramps are more severe. A routine check-up indicates small fibroid present in her uterus. No action is needed, she was told by her doctor, as the tumor is benign and unless she is bleeding heavily, just leave it alone. Little did she know that continued unopposed estrogen dominance is making the fibroid grow.

Little did she know the worse was yet to come. Some years later, as early as 1-2 years, she felt a lump in her breast. Biopsy confirms it to be a malignant tumor. Now she needs radical surgery and possibly chemotherapy. Janet has set herself up for cancer from 20 years of neglect of the signals the body has been sending her to warn her of hormonal imbalance and estrogen overload.

A few years later, when she is in her early forties, the fibroid is causing her to bleed heavily and pressing on her bladder. What is the standard medical treatment? Hysterectomy. She did not know better, and her uterus is removed, often times with the ovaries. After the surgery, she is cycled on hormone replacement therapy. She may be given a combination pill of synthetic estrogen and synthetic progesterone. More likely than not, she is given estrogen only (such as Premarin), setting up an unopposed estrogen environment. Janet thinks that her problems are solved since her uterus is removed. She does not know that the story is far from over and in fact is getting worse.

What is the Lesson? Estrogen dominance is the leading cause of fibroid and a precursor to a hormonal sensitive tumor. This condition is an epidemic largely ignored by conventional medicine. Fibroid is promoted by persistently high estrogen production. Without the monthly balancing effect of progesterone, the uterus continue to grow. prevention and treatment of fibroid from a non-surgical perspective should therefore focus on reducing the level of estrogen in the body as well as increasing the level progesterone (the antagonist to estrogen).

Dr.: I am doing fine, thank you Q: As a medical doctor, what is your general assessment of the product, Immunocal? Dr.: Well eenm, as a medical doctor, I have used Immunocal, the immune booster most especially in the area of my specialty as a senior registrar in radiotherapy....and thereby treat cancer patients, so one of the things we sometimes or most times use all the times was Immunocal. We use Immunocal as a supplement to help our patents in terms of the treatment and by and large, it has been a very good product. Q: Thank you very much. Dr.: You are welcome. Q: Have you ever experienced any problem prescribing Immunocal for your patients? Dr.: Well, I have not experienced any to be precise. I can take on the question in two ways, may be in terms of the side effect, yeah, definitely it does not have any side effect. No patient has ever complained of any side effect, and in terms getting the drug, well, that really became an issue. The drug was available when it was newly introduced but all of a sudden, there was the dearth of getting it. Yes, it was not really available at one time but recently we have been having it. In terms of the supply it has not been really too bad. Q: Thank you. Can you tell us what the government can do to improve on the state of health care facilities, most especially in the provision of drugs in our hospitals and health institutions? Dr.: Well, government has a lot to do, generally, although the government has been trying setting up health centres, general hospitals, especially in Lagos State. Everywhere, we have general hospitals, tertiary hospitals but they should also help in getting these drugs subsidized so that people can afford to buy them most especially in my area of specialty which I will always talk about. The drugs are very expensive, if the government can come in and help by subsidizing in order to reduce the prices and also speak and work with some of these pharmaceutical companies on how to assist in bringing in these drugs from abroad. By so doing, these drugs can at least get to the people at reasonable prices. Though, government has tried in terms of the availability of other drugs, unlike before when you won't be able to get any. Thank God, today things are getting better. But for the cancer drugs, which are still very expensive, government can sit down with other stake holders and discuss on how to find solutions concerning the supply of the drugs so that the patents can get them at reasonable prices. Q: What about formulating policies that would take care of these problems once and for all in the health sector? Dr.: Yes, that might be more of the responsibility of the National Assembly and States House of Assemblies. But government can still do something positive before these laws are passed. Q:Presently, the doctors are on strike, what is really the problem and how can it be resolved so that the ordinary Nigerians who cannot afford to engage the services of private hospitals and health institutions would not suffer and possibly die? Dr.: Really it was a warning strike and it has presently been called off. Q: Really? Dr.: Exactly, it has been called off as I am speaking to you. Q: Thank God, but can we still talk about it? Dr.: Yes, we can. Though it was a warning, it was an issue between the doctor's union and the management of the hospital. I think what the government should do boils down to what we've earlier said. Yes, these strikes have been too frequent and this is not really good for our health system, most especially when we have so many people who cannot afford to engage the services of most of the private health hospitals and institutions. I think what the government should do right now is to sit down with the Nigeria Medical Association, the Association of Residence Doctors, even the Medical Dental Council and Consultants to Government Hospitals, they should all hold a confab where all these problems affecting the sector would be sorted out, most especially issues that has to do with the welfare of all the staff in the public and government health institutions. If not, there would still be issues that would result into certain reactions which might not be well for the system. Assuming that is being taking care of it may or would stop these frequent crisis. The problem is that, may be because we have just transit from the military era and during the military era, a lot or laws were erroneously made and these laws may have to be changed or amended because some of the laws were not really good as of that time it was passed. Now, we are in democracy where people have to express themselves freely and bare their mind on issues that has to do with their lives and that is why we are seeing all these strikes. But gradually, as time goes on it would fade off and all these strikes we're experiencing would be a thing of the past. Honestly, these strikes are becoming too many. Q: Let’s go back to the product, Immunocal that we've been talking about. Doctor, can you strongly recommend Immunocal for use in all our hospitals and health institutions throughout the country and beyond? Dr.: Yes, based on the fact that..... Q: What about the affordability you earlier talked about? Dr.: Yes, when the product is made available, the prices would certainly come down, and the profiteers would lose out. Let us also see if the company and in actual fact other pharmaceutical companies could come together and partner with government so that administrative measures can be put in place in order to alleviate the problems often faced by them. Take for example, the import duties paid on these products could be lowered or probably be waved off so that prices placed on each and every products brought in or manufactured locally here would in turn be lowered. Q: Have you ever had any complaint from your patients over the use of Immunocal? Dr.: Definitely no, I have not received any apart from the complaints over the price. They say it is too expensive compared with the prices of other drugs. When we tell them “Immunocal is good.” They respond. “Oh! God, we know and would have loved buying a bundle, but it is too expensive.”But interestingly, most of them do come back to buy a sachet or two. Having tried it once and discovered that it was very good for them, they do come back to buy more and says “The supplement you gave us is very good.” Q: Quite interesting indeed. Dr.: Yes, but yet, they still maintained that the product is too expensive. I also wish the prices should come down. Take for example, some of them do buy and send to their relations and patients who have cancer and other ailments back home in their villages or cities. Q: I also wish the company should do something about it. What other ailments does Immunocal take care of? Dr.: Well, based on my experience and information I got from others, Immunocal is well fortified as an anti-oxidant, the ingredients used can correct and curtail even if the ailment is at the top of its level. Note this, Immunocal is not really for treatment, it is more of a preventive measure and it is also there to boost your immune system that is your white blood cells. As I said earlier, Immunocal is not used for treatment of any ailment but can manage it effectively. It is a supplement that helps fight infections, nutritional diseases, malnutrition; it can also be used on cancer and diabetes patients. I heard that there is an ongoing research on the use of Immunocal on pregnant women. These are the wonderful things Immunocal is capable of doing to your body. FACT FILE FACT FILE What is Prostate Cancer? Men with Prostate Cancer have small tumours in the prostate. In the early stages, when the cancer cells are only in the prostate, 90% of the cases can be successfully treated. Unfortunately, during the early stages symptoms are very difficult to recognize. Without regular testing (PSA and DRE) it is very difficult to detect early stage Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body and produce secondary tumours (metastases) if untreated. At this point the chances of successful treatment are much lower. Prostate Cancer, most commonly spreads to the bones and lymph nodes. Facts: The most common cancer in men will afflict 1 in 7 during their lifetime. It is more common where there is a family history and it is being diagnosed more frequently in younger men. It is estimated 25,500 Canadian men will be diagnosed this year, often without symptoms in its earliest, most treatable stage. In BC 3,400 will be diagnosed and 530 will die.

Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers among men and if diagnosed during the early stages, can be treated very successfully. Like other cancers, obesity increases the risks of aggressive prostate diseases. Recent studies by researchers show that fat surrounding the prostate of overweight or obese men with prostate cancer provides a favorable environment for the growth of the cancer. The fat is mostly an underrated organ. It is not just an energy store but it secretes wide range of growth factors, cytokines and hormones, including leptin and adiponectin, and it is a major player in the immune system, which protects the body from infection and disease. But too much fat in the body can cause these systems to go haywire and can increase risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Experts say that in an increasingly obese population, it is important to understand how fat, and specifically the fat surrounding the prostate can influence the growth and severity of prostate cancer and may provide an opportunity for implementing personalized lifestyle as well as therapeutic strategies.

Boosting Glutathione Levels Could Cut The Risk Of Breast Cancer Researchers wanted to find out if there was any correlation between breast cancer risk and blood serum levels of cysteine - an amino acid and precursor of glutathione, the intracellular antioxidant that I've told you about many times. The most dramatic results were recorded among pre-menopausal women... Three recent e-Alerts about mammography prompted a batch of member comments that could be called a 'heated debate' - some arguing that mammograms are necessary, while others offered experiences that would make anyone think twice about signing on for the procedure when less problematic screening tools are available. Today, however, I'll calm the waters with a subject we can all agree on: An effective way to prevent breast cancer would be a welcome addition to any screening process a woman might choose. Fortunately, new evidence shows that an important amino acid may provide significant breast cancer prevention. Something in the blood At last month's American Association for Cancer Research meeting, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard School of Public Health released the results of a new study using data from the Nurses' Health Study. Researchers wanted to find out if there was any correlation between breast cancer risk and blood serum levels of cysteine - an amino acid and precursor of glutathione, the intracellular antioxidant that I've told you about many times. Taking the lead from previous studies that have shown glutathione to be capable of detoxifying carcinogens, the Brigham researchers examined blood sample data from more than 700 breast-cancer patients. All patient records were matched with records of subjects who were healthy and of similar age. The most dramatic results were recorded among premenopausal women. In this group, women who had the highest levels of cysteine were more than 75 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those with the lowest cysteine levels. And the risk was reduced even more among women who had normal body weight.

As a health care professional, you know that pressure ulcers are a staggering public health problem. They are a major clinical and cost management challenge. The attached pictures of ulcers in a recent patient show dramatic improvement, which equates to a tremendous cost savings. Normally, pressure ulcers are a cause of pain, suffering, and sometimes death. They are a source of anguish for families and frustration for staff. Prior to Immunocal®, existing solutions for pressure ulcer treatment were financially draining, resource-intensive and often required surgery. The Official United States Web site for people with Medicare reports the national annual occurrence of pressure ulcers among residents in nursing homes to be 8%. In addition, glutathione is believed to protect other antioxidants (among them, vitamins C and E), prolonging and enhancing their effectiveness. It also acts directly against certain carcinogenic substances by binding to these toxins and eliminating them through urine or bile.

In an interview with BioMedNet News, Mr. Zhang mentioned only two cysteine precursors, NAC and Immunocal.

What is Immunotherapy? Immunotherapy (Immunocal Therapy) is a term defined as the "treatment of disease by [1] inducing, enhancing, or suppressing an immune response". Immunotherapies designed to elicit or amplify an immune response are classified as activation immunotherapies.
