excuse to add more pieces to the closet, which says time to declutter again! Oh wait, don’t forget to take that last-minute mini-vacation, whether it’s local or international; there’s still time to get a little play-in. But when you return, know that it will be time to put away those around the house sundresses, shorts, tops, and even PJ’s that we have gotten so comfortable and proud wearing to work in the at-home office with a made-up face some lipstick or gloss for those zoom calls over the past year in a half. Because here we are again singing, “Everything must change.”
I am life! Life is a gift from God; what we do with it is our gift to him. So, while we live our life to the fullest, remember that everything must change, including the seasons, and before you know it fall is here. Many on the corporate front are returning to the office, which means childcare may be a focus for some since we have shared the same space for over eighteen months. The future leaders of America return to school in just a few weeks, and we join our colleagues in the office. Not sure if I’m ready for that but nonetheless it’s happening not just to me but worldwide. Trying to find a place of normalcy. This means embracing those extra pounds we have not been able to shed, nor did we spend a lot of time trying. We have just embraced it and called it pandemic weight. Here’s the reality. We can no longer fit anything and are now on a shopping spree, which we are forced to have. Back to the office is screaming new wardrobe. Hooray, another
So, as we prepare for the fourth quarter of the year, create your checklist, or revisit the one we made at the beginning of the year to see what has been accomplished thus far, asking yourself the following questions: have I remained focused? Have I adhered to self-care? Something that we have discussed here for many months now. Have I adopted some healthy habits like getting up early to enjoy the quiet time with just you and God? Have I saved any money this month? Did I take any time out to meditate or exercise? Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish! No matter what, remember this, believe in yourself, love every bit of you, Be excellent in all your efforts. Remain serene and calm; hold on to your peace and worry about nothing. You are a child of God, and his greatness reign supreme! Be loyal and trust that God’s wisdom has granted you the ability to be GREAT! So, queens, put your lipstick on, adjust your crowns. It’s time to take flight! Feel the Impact! Terri R Stephenson Editor in Chief

50 ROUND THE
TABLE By Brian Walker
50 Round the Table is a forum in which those in the 50+ age arena can discuss the realities, challenges and triumphs of life. A place for us to reflect, realize and share experiences that continue to Impact our lives. We welcome our readers’ input, reaction and suggestions. You can write us at 50roundthetable@gmail.com.
SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR And just like that, it’s Autumn. The summer has come and gone, and it seems as in a blink of an eye. Just as life does, can you remember when you were 17 years old and thought that 40 was old age? Do you recall partying all night, only to go right to work all day? How about playing ball all afternoon without any pain the next day? Yea, me too. We are all a little older, a bit wiser, and hopefully more responsible. Now it’s time to celebrate with those you love and those you have just met after the long hiatus. New friends, old friends, Grandparents, and cousins; let us welcome each other back into our respective lives. So much has changed in our world and our families. We owe it to ourselves and those around us to be the BEST we can be. We know that this time of the year brings joy and happiness, but also some sorrow. There will be new relationships celebrated, we will talk about the memories we have made over the years, and there will inevitably be some deaths. But men, let it not the sorrow be due to us not taking care of ourselves. We know that Black Men and Women are at a greater risk of many diseases and ailments. Everyone, the HAPAwards are coming! It is right around the corner. Yes, I am overly ecstatic! The HAPAwards will be live in action in just a few months. For me, it has been two years since my last HAPA Xperience. Are you ready? If not, IMPACT Atlanta International Fashion & Beauty Magazine has you covered with the inside of what is happening with the 5th Annual HAPAwards 2021. The Hollywood & African Prestigious Awards is a spectacular event that brings African actors, musicians, celebrities, and prominent dignitaries from the diaspora together in unity. From the words of Tina Weisinger, CEO & Co-founder of HAPA, “The awards stand to bridge the gap between Africa and the rest of the world.” which is what makes HAPA very special. The HAPA Awards is not just another glamorous red-carpet awards ceremony. HAPA’s vision is to “blend cultures, promote the beauty and richness of Africa and America while spreading peace throughout the world.” In 2019, I experienced this intention because I was able to meet & mingle with some of these figures, such as Chief Joseph of the Maasai Tribe in Kenya, Vivica A. Foxx, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Melka Amany, and many more. Furthermore, this is not just a one-day event; it is a three-day event. Each day focuses on Black achievement as it flows with the theme for HAPA. This year’s keynote is Collaboration for Global Development, Prosperity & 20
Peace. Day one is music, comedy & fashion night. This is the kickoff event for the HAPA-Xperience. It is the day to hear live performances from global and local musicians as beautiful fashion designs walk the runway to their music. In 2019, Imatha, IAM’s featured designer, impressed all with her one-of-a-kind designs and aesthetics. She even received the HAPAward for Best Independent Designer of The Year. I am very excited to see the new featured designers with their fashion designs and the music artists with their featured songs for this year. Imagine witnessing the next breakout artist or fashion designer. Remember, this is only the first day of the HAPA Xperience. The next day is the International Business Round Table. Now, this is the day to network with business people from all around the diaspora. We listen to keynote speakers and other prominent figures who are transforming and challenging the narratives of African & American businesses. They discuss perspectives and topics that encourage business growth between Africa and America. Finally, there is the Main Show Event. The moment we show our black excellence and elegance. This year the Awards ceremony will be held at the stunning Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, California. We are super excited to hear the announcement on who will be this year’s host.

In 2019, Vivica A. Fox and Michael Blackson were the masters of ceremony. These two were a perfect combo to have as co-hosts. Michael Blackson known as the “The African King of Comedy,” provided comic relief, and Vivica A. Fox provided the glam with her diva attitude. Along with their prestige, musical performances from artists like Afro B., performing his breakout hit song, “Drogba,” and Lifetime Honoree awards were presented to those who have transformed the music and film industry like John Singleton with movies like Boyz in The Hood. Plus, there were many other awards for global musicians, actors, and film producers. Of course, we all know the pandemic hit in 2020 but that did not stop HAPA from moving forward with the virtual live show. Let me give you a preview of this year’s honorees: Melba Moore for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Tina Fears for the Breakthrough Performance Artist Award, Marla Gibbs for the Hollywood Icon Award, Emmanuel Kalumbata for the Entrepreneur Award, and Dr. Michael K. Obeng for the International Man of the Year Award. There are many other categories and awards with many more nominees and nominations. Phew. There is so much to look forward to. Now it is time for you to get ready for your own HAPA Xperience 2021. Let’s join our community leaders, international political figures & dignitaries, celebrities, and stars who are pioneers in motion pictures, arts,
music, and comedy. Let us bridge these outstanding achievements to promote the beauty and richness of Africa and America together

The Legend Within Us By Dorthy Spearman- Clark
We also know that episodes in life measure seasons. We refer to periods that dictated the course for our future as things in a season. We refer to pass relationship tenures as things in a season. The list goes on and on.
My hope is that along our route through seasons; there is a legend that makes us one. It seems that only yesterday we were in the summer months. Sunshine, blue skies, hot days, and humid nights – its glory was abundantly upon us. It was indeed a “due” season. What about your “now” season? Is it due, or is it well past due?
My theory is that the things within any season, whether good, bad and/or ugly, prove to be worthy of that space and tend to write the story. When there is a multitude of instances (things) to reflect upon, we may find ourselves weary of the episodes; however, this is indeed what makes the “season.” Wouldn’t you agree?
I believe that the fulfillment of one’s season includes people, places, and things. It consists of meeting new friends, the dismissal of toxic influences, and even losses of the cherished. Not just to reflect on past seasons, what about future ones? Is there a forecast on your horizon?
Seasons in our lives are those excerpts of time that we can now reminisce about.
I have come to believe that when a comfortable amount of certainty has been removed from life. We begin slow suffrage to a most peculiar demise—not realizing that it is all a part of the inevitable season that we will sooner or later rehash. And likewise, when guarantees in life are bountiful, our human nature succumbs to the relaxation of the façade of paradise. Thereby creating an illustrious season on which to gaze upon emotionally.
We all know for all things, there is a season. And for each season, there is a reason.
Scenes – good or bad – that add to the fabric of our lifetime. Those scenes pattern our future while producing lessons learned along the way. A season’s reason fills our cup to the brim with emotional memorabilia. Asking ourselves the whys and subjecting ourselves to the should’ve, would’ve, could’ve scenarios that we all claim fame too. I call my season the legend with me. You see, there is a story within us all. Some accounts may appear as tall tales and some simple happenstances. Nonetheless, they are etched in our memories and the memories of others who became a part of them. What we must reveal to ourselves, despite pain or happiness, is that our legend – our story – identifies us. My legend is one of survival. It is not a story of some horrendous accident in which I beat the odds of survival or one of a wild animal attack, in which I barely escaped. My legend includes those seasons which erected “me.” I, the writer, the philanthropist, the one who cherishes the ever-receptive philosophy of “it is good in everybody.” What is yours?
Now is your season to add to the pages of your legend. A leaf embraces a gracious change, From green to orange, to brown. It is somewhat quite spectacular, To do it, less a sound. No need to clue you or me, To hint at the upcoming change, It is done, and that is all. Again, again and again. Likewise, a season possesses such. A change without a sign. Yet it forms a Legend as we speak. A story without making a sound.

I had the absolute privilege of interviewing the creator of Lakay Designs. Like most successful businesses, it was birthed from a need. The creator and CEO, JoJo Pierre, says that when she shopped at Bed Bath & Beyond and other home stores, something was missing and that “something” was a reflection of herself. She would be looking for décor that resonated with who she was, saying, “there was no representation of me.” She identified what was missing and created it herself. Lakay Designs is a home décor line that “caters to blackness.” Here you can find beautiful, hand-made, stylish, ethnic, afro-centric, and Egyptian designs to lavish all areas of your home with.
From bedspreads to window treatments to rugs and so much more, you name it, they’ve got it. As a successful black-owned business, they make it a point to recognize and support other black-owned businesses. Mrs. Pierre shared with me that her parents are of Haitian descent and that Haitian creole was a dialect often spoken in their household and among their family members. They have been in business for seven years and are a thriving company, even amassing close to 80,000 followers on Instagram.
Before immersing herself in art and design, Mrs. Pierre had a career in real estate. Having to stage homes for prospective buyers allowed her to dip her feet into the waters of home décor. The name Lakay means home in Haitian creole, so instead of simply calling it “Home Designs,” she wanted to infuse her own culture in the business name, calling it Lakay 28
Designs. I also learned that “Fanm Lakay” means “a woman who takes care of her home and her family” and it is a highly regarded title of endearment for women in Haitian culture.
A resilient and dedicated businesswoman, JoJo spoke about her first product being an apron and how her very first order resulted in the customer wanting a refund. Although it was somewhat discouraging, it did not deter her from her focus and her business’s success. She shared that she learned something powerful from the experience and even dropped a gem explaining, “You will question your capability, and your skills and sometimes you won’t get the results you expected but keep going.”
The CEO shared that one of her favorite designs to create is basically anything with an Egyptian flair. She feels that her artistic passion really flows while creating these types of pieces. Her definition of success is Lakay being in over a million homes. She also shared that what she loves most about running her own home décor business is “definitely the freedom to explore her creativity” and use it as an outlet to showcase her artistic design skills. Being a former accountant, she did not get the chance to express her creativity, so this was almost therapeutic for her. JoJo further revealed that this is also a family-owned business, 100% black-owned, where 80% of the products were made in-house, and 20% are outsourced, with all supplies coming from black-owned companies and suppliers.
IMPACT ATLANTA FASHION & BEAUTY INTERNATIONAL
JoJo’s advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs in the design industry is, “Don’t let anybody tell you what the world is going to accept, and never let them define your ideas for you.” “ As long as you don’t give up you will succeed.” She also advised to “never play it safe” as she believes success happens when you jump out there and take risks. We briefly discussed the fact that God gives everyone a gift for a reason. If you, have it, it’s for you to bless the world with because somebody needs it. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and can’t wait to see what’s next for Lakay Designs. Make sure you follow the store’s IG page @Lakaydesigns to stay in the know and see what’s new!

(Dallas, TX) July 29, 2021 — Some albums are destined for a certain time. After several years of evolution and change in her life, Grammy® Award-Winning Artist, NAACP Image® Award-Winning Actress, Songwriter, and Producer, Tamela Mann, is set to release her new Tillymann Music album, Overcomer, through The Orchard Distribution on Friday, August 6. There is a new sense of authority and urgency in Tamela’s music now; she has lived these songs and is ready to share the strength and purpose she has found. 48
Propelled by the singer’s strong, passionate vocals, and her newfound voice as a songwriter, each of the 12 tracks on Overcomer was conceived to bring healing and hope to a world resetting after a tumultuous chapter in its history. There is plenty to unpack from a lyrical standpoint, and Tamela is at the writing helm on most of the songs. “I poured my experiences into the lyrics, putting my heart and soul into the words on this album,” Tamela says. “It’s me looking at my life and the things I was dealing with, trying to learn from those things, and doing what I can to

overcome them.” Overcomer may be Tamela’s best work to date. Each song stands on its own as a masterful production. The album was executive produced by Tamela and her husband, Music Producer and NAACP Image® Award-Winning Actor/Comedian, David Mann, with production quarterbacked by a cadre of all-star producers and writers. Special guests include Kirk Franklin and Wyclef Jean on the standout track melding R&B, reggae, rap, and gospel, “Hello God;” Todd Dulaney on the worshipful “Finished Work;” Travis Green, the co-writer and producer of the anthemic “Finished;” and The Fellas, on her current single, “Help Me.” “Touch From You,” the debut single from the album, added to Tamela’s bank of personal bests; the track was her seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart. “Source” and “He Did It For Me” are two other standouts. Says Tamela of the inspiration behind the lyrics for them both: “God is the source and my go-to when I’m lost. I can’t do anything without Him, and I never want to try to.” Overcomer is the latest accomplishment and centerpiece in Tamela’s busy career. In Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living (BET+), she reprises her role as “Cora,” which she originated in Perry’s successful “Madea” plays, films, and hit television show, Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns. She and David released their first book and joint album, the NAACP Image® Award-winning Us Against the World. She is starring in two upcoming films: the Tyler Perry “Madea” movie coming to Netflix and Soul Santa airing this Christmas on BET, which she executive produced with David. Tamela also launched her own successful athleisure apparel line, the Tamela Mann Collection (tamelamann.com). The line has become a popular staple in the athleisure apparel space.
50
Tamela has always created art that encourages people and draws them closer to their faith. Her hit-laden music career includes such memorable songs as “Change Me,” “God Provides,” and the unforgettable, No. 1 Platinum-selling classic, “Take Me to the King.” Tamela has earned numerous accolades. In addition to scoring a Grammy®, she is a BET Award winner, Billboard Music Award winner, and multiple Gospel Music Stellar Award, NAACP Image® Award, and GMA Dove Award winner. “I love butterflies. I feel like I’m coming out of the cocoon again, energized and on fire,” says Tamela, who underwent surgery to have both her knees in the summer of 2019. After taking some time to work on her health and wellness, and a fresh creative mindset, she’s stepping forward a changed woman to express her heart and soul. “This is new music for a new time and a new me,” she says. If someone were to ask the singer/songwriter what her greatest wish was for this album, says Tamela Mann: “My heart’s desire is to give people hope and let them know there’s still compassion in the world. This Thing Called Black… By Derrick Andrews
This Thing Called Black! Is it a definitive state of mind? Essence culturally defined through the passing down of birthrights across generational lines, or a simple state of being? Some fragile formulation is based solely upon seeing the color of one’s skin! An external bias that conveniently denies us the accurate representation of our ancestral depth, our ethnic breadth sourced from an enriching wealth hidden deep within... Why this clumsy impersonation of a rhythmically prosperous nation? A naive infatuation with what this world has deemed as cool... Have we all been fooled by mythological fiction societal depictions of a prolific culture we’ve now placed on hold? Are we so caught up in the capturing of soul that we have solely overlooked the facts? Will our restoration require the mental migration back to the Motherland? Even if we journeyed in our shallow simplicity, would we ever come to understand that there’s more to this than meets the eye? That this Thing Called Black… It’s been systematically tied to “little white lies” of Ethnicity… Afrocentricity… The deliberate duplicity of pig feet, cornbread, and black-eyed peas! 54
Funny, though it seems we’ve grown more profound in wisdom yet never learning… Overlooking the fact, I’d published Black Is Black, Cotton Grows Indoors, yet we’ve forgotten Mississippi’s still burning! Were we sleeping during Martin’s dream? So, it would seem having been profoundly broken down that “Black” might mean this narcissistic society of varied pigmentation augmented by tight whips, some ice, and designer jeans! This Thing Called Black… Is it as simple as the spoken word, a color-defining verb? Or has it purposely been linked that narrowed minds might think about demeaning articulations frequently heard like dem, dos, dis-ndat? Are they real or insecure fallacies seeking to convert polished crowns of Negro and Colored to a tarnished branding of Black? Examine yourself; can you find any truth? Does “Black” take a path to any ancestral roots? Does it define who you are, your travels thus far? Joyous victories embraced from a life full of scars! Is it your arrival into the present from the journey of their past? The freedom you’ve been seeking in the hope

of achieving answers to questions you were told not to ask? Does it express to the world the pride you possess amidst all that you’ve lacked?
Your gain from the pain, riches you’ve attained from stripes administered across your ancestors’ backs! This Thing Called Black… Is it a dormant thought that resides placed in the back of your mind? A forgotten history is requiring the jarring of time!
A view of the truth, one severed from its roots as seen through the eyes of a world color blind! Maybe “Black” is nothing more than the outward manifestation of this world’s inward lies…How is it none of us colored authoritarians don’t even know what to say? Maybe the truth of the matter is that we’ve all been played concerning. This Thing Called Black…
