SAMPLE
Lebo wakes up early.
It is Saturday and there is no school today.
He jumps out of bed and walks to the window.
SAMPLE
It is a warm and sunny day.
Lebo wants to take Dodo for a walk in the park. He will ask Hanna if she wants to join them.
Lebo puts on his shoes and takes his hat.
SAMPLE
He fetches Dodo’s leash. Lebo stands on the porch and calls Dodo.
“Dodo! Come, Dodo!”
Dodo lies in his kennel. He does not get up.
Lebo walks over to the kennel to see if Dodo is still sleeping.
Dodo lies with his head on his paws.
His ears are hanging, and he looks tired.
SAMPLE
He does not even wag his tail.
“Let’s go for a walk, Dodo,” says Lebo.
Dodo slowly opens his eyes. He is not in the mood for a walk.
What is wrong with Dodo? wonders Lebo.
Lebo calls Daddy. “Come look, Daddy.”
SAMPLE
“Dodo does not want to walk to the park with me.”
Daddy and Lebo sit with Dodo.
Lebo puts his hand on Dodo’s head.
Daddy pours water into his bowl.
Dodo does not drink the water.
Daddy carries Dodo to the car.
Lebo throws a blanket on the back seat and Daddy puts Dodo on the blanket.
SAMPLE
Dodo closes his eyes to sleep.
Lebo sits next to Dodo.
What is wrong with him? he wonders. Daddy and Lebo take Dodo to the vet.
SAMPLE
The vet looks at Dodo’s eyes and ears. He touches his head and feels his tummy. He takes Dodo’s temperature.
“Dodo is ill,” says the vet.
“He must sleep in the hospital tonight.”
The hospital is only for animals. Lebo feels sad. He cries. He does not want to leave Dodo at the vet.
SAMPLE
“Don’t worry, Lebo,” says Daddy. “Dodo will feel better soon. The vet will take care of him. We will come back tomorrow to take him home when he feels better.”
SAMPLE
The vet gives Dodo an injection.
Lebo takes him to the kennel where he will stay until tomorrow.
Lebo rubs Dodo’s head.
Poor Dodo feels very ill.
“Don’t worry, Dodo. You will feel better soon,” says Lebo.
“Goodbye, Dodo. We will see you tomorrow,” says Daddy. SAMPLE
