The strange little ±sh SAMPLE
Ben is playing at Lebo’s house. The boys kick Lebo’s big, yellow ball. Ben kicks the ball high in the air. Lebo runs and catches the ball before it falls in the water.
Now, it is Lebo’s turn to kick the ball. He kicks the ball, and it lands in the ±sh pond.
The boys take o³ their shoes and socks.
They get into the pond to fetch the ball.
SAMPLE
Lebo and Ben put their feet in the water.
The water is cold. The bottom of the pond feels slippery. “Are there any ±sh in this pond?” asks Ben.
Lebo sees a very small ±sh. “Look at this ±sh, Ben,” he says. Ben and Lebo look at the tiny ±sh. It is a strange little ±sh. It has a very small head and two big eyes. It has a long tail that moves to and fro when it swims. The tiny ±sh swims very fast.
“I have never seen a ±sh like that,” says Ben.
SAMPLE
Ben walks to the middle of the pond to fetch his yellow ball. Once he has it, the boys get out. They sit on the grass next to the pond. They look in the water for the strange little ±sh.
SAMPLE
Ben spots it ±rst. The ±sh swims to the bottom of the pond. Then it swims very fast to the top and dives down again.
Ben and Lebo want Hanna to see the strange little ±sh too. They put on their shoes and walk to Hanna’s house.
SAMPLE
Ben, Lebo, and Hanna walk back to the pond. “We can sit on the grass next to the pond,” says Ben. “We have to be very quiet, and no one must move. We do not want to scare the strange little ±sh.”
SAMPLE
The friends look for the ±sh, but they cannot see it anywhere. The tiny ±sh is hiding.
Hanna wants to see it. “Don’t worry, Hanna,” says Lebo. “We will come again next week to ±nd the strange little ±sh.”
SAMPLE
The friends play in the garden near the ±sh pond. Lebo sits under the tree and looks into the water. He is looking for the strange little ±sh. “Come and see! The little ±sh is here!” he calls.
SAMPLE
The friends sit on the grass and look at the ±sh. They see how fast it swims. “The strange little ±sh has grown,” says Ben. “Its tail is shorter, and its head is a little bigger. It now has two small feet that grow from its belly!” Hanna is happy that she saw the strange little ±sh.
The friends tell Lebo’s dad about the strange little ±sh in the pond.
Lebo’s dad laughs. “Come to our house every Friday,” he says. “Then you can watch the strange little ±sh and see how it grows.”
It is Friday. The friends sit next to the pond to look for the strange little ±sh. They see the ±sh swimming towards them. “Look at the ±sh!” shouts Ben. “It is much bigger.”
Its head is bigger, and the long tail is shorter and thicker. The ±sh has grown four little legs with feet. The strange ±sh does not look the same as it did a week ago. It has webs between its toes and its head looks like a frog. “What is happening to the little ±sh?” asks Ben.
