Splish-splosh at the car wash

Today is no ordinary school day. No schoolwork is being done and the classrooms are empty. It’s entrepreneurs’ day and everyone is very excited. There is a buzz in the air as the children set up their stalls and laugh and joke.

But today is serious business too. Each group must sell products at a stall or work together to make money.

The ±eld is scattered with colourful umbrellas and there are stalls everywhere. Some stalls sell cake, others have sandwiches, hot dogs, balloons, candy ¶oss, ice cream and cold drinks. There is even a milkshake stall.

Ben, Lebo, Hanna, Harry and Casper have come up with a super plan. They are having a car wash. With all the parents coming to the entrepreneurs’ day, they should have many customers whose cars need a good clean. They made a large poster to advertise their car wash. Hanna sits under an umbrella next to the poster. “Good morning, and welcome to Squeaky Clean Car Wash,” she says to the ±rst customer of the day. “May I have your name and your car’s registration number?”

She writes the customer’s name in a book, along with the registration number. “That will be R35, please.” She puts the money safely in a cash box.

The four boys are the cleaning crew. Hanna shows them which cars to wash. Casper and Lebo each have a bucket, a sponge and soap and water. They wash the cars while Ben cleans the windows.

Harry uses a soft towel to buff the cars once they are clean. He does a really good job and the cars gleam in the morning sun. Hanna inspects their work and makes sure the cars are spotless. They all get a thumbs up and a huge smile.

Everyone is having a lot of fun. They work hard all morning, and by ten o’clock the boys have washed seven cars. But washing muddy and dusty cars is hard work, and soon they are hot and thirsty.

Casper goes to buy cold drinks from one of the stalls. When he returns, there are three more customers waiting. Their plan worked!

Squeaky Clean is a huge success!

“Who are those people?” asks Casper. He nods in the direction of a man and two women walking around with clipboards. “I’m not sure,” says Ben, “they seem to be inspecting the stalls and watching what everyone is doing.”

Just then, Hanna jogs over, she looks like she has big news to share. “Do you know who that is?” she asks, barely able to contain her excitement.

“No, we don’t,” says Ben, wiping the foam from his forehead. “They are the judges!” says Hanna in a loud whisper. “At the end of the day, they will announce a winning team.” “I didn’t know this is a competition,” says Casper. “In that case, we have to work even harder, that prize is ours!”

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and of course to all our hard-working entrepreneurs. We have come to the end of our entrepreneurs’ day and it’s time to put everything away and clear up. I will announce the name of the winning team in the next 30 minutes or so.” Principal Davis’s announcement sends everyone scurrying to clean up.

Ben laughs. “Thank goodness, our stand is easy to clear up.” They load the buckets, soap and sponges into the boot of Dad’s car. Ben takes down the umbrella and Hanna rolls up the poster and puts it away. Casper looks after the cash box with all the money they made.

Once they are done, they look around and see other children with bigger stalls still cleaning up.

“Let’s give them a hand,” says Harry. Ben and Lebo pick up rubbish and throw it in black rubbish bags. Hanna helps to pack away the leftover cake and cold drinks. Casper and Harry take down the umbrellas and stack the chairs.

At last, the ±eld is clear and everything is put away. The children sit on the ±eld, eagerly waiting to hear who has won.

Principal Davis walks up to the microphone with an envelope in his hand. “In third place is the milkshake stall!” Three girls run up to accept their prize while everyone cheers. “In second place, we have the wooden-toy stall!” Four boys run to the front to receive second prize. “And now, the moment everyone is waiting for.

The winners of today’s competition are Squeaky Clean Car Wash! Well done to all of you!” The crowd cheers and the ±ve friends jump up and down and congratulate one another. They are very happy to accept their prize and although they are tired, it was all worth it.
