Part 1: Bitsy, the gnome

Bitsy, the gnome is bored. He sits on a rock and stares out in front of him. He has nothing to do and wishes something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a sparrow lands on the road in front of their cottage. The bird cannot see their home hidden among the roots of the large fig tree. Bitsy wishes he was old enough to ride a bird, like some of the older gnomes. He promised his father he would take good care of a bird, but his father just shook his head and said, ‘‘You are too young, Bitsy. Be patient.’’ Too young? He is already 7 years old!

The sparrow is still sitting on the road. Bitsy gets up off the rock and slowly walks closer. The bird doesn’t fly away, it looks tired and scared. Bitsy gently rubs the sparrow’s head, and he sees that its wing is hurt.

Bitsy runs home as fast as he can and fetches water for the sparrow. The little bird drinks every drop.

‘The greedy fox’

Unknown

The greedy fox was hungry, and liked to hunt at night. He could eat a frog or mouse, and was longing for a bite.

The greedy fox crept silently, with his prey in sight. He saw a red squirrel, and was ready for a fight.

The greedy fox was spotted, the rodent was too quick!

‘Jack

and the Beanstalk’

Long ago, a boy and his mother lived in a small house in a village. The boy went to school every day, and in the afternoons, he helped his mother around the house. His name was Jack. They had a cat and a cow and grew vegetables in the garden.

One day, Jack’s mother said to him, ‘‘Jack, we have no money left. Please take our cow to the market and sell her.’’

Jack was very sad, but he did as his mother asked and took the cow to the market.

At the market, Jack saw an old man. ‘‘Good morning sir, would you like to buy my cow?” Jack asked.

The old man looked at him and said, “Mm, I don’t have any money, but I can offer you these five magic beans.”

“Sounds good to me!” said Jack. With that, he took the beans and went home.

His mom was very cross when Jack gave her the beans and she threw them out the window.

Jack went to bed with a heavy heart and felt he had made a big mistake. The next morning, there was a giant beanstalk outside their window! Jack couldn’t believe his eyes. It was as broad as a bus and reached up to the sky.

I am climbing all the way up there, Jack decided. He packed some lunch in his backpack, and carefully started climbing. Up and up, he climbed until he reached the clouds.

I am standing on a cloud! Jack was amazed. He took a few steps and started walking. After a short while, he came to a huge castle. He walked up to the door and knocked. The old door creaked open, and a gigantic woman stepped outside.

“Who are you, boy?” she asked with a smile.

“My name is Jack, madam,” he replied.

“You arrived just in time! I think you can help me with something. I want to sweep the corners of my castle, but my broom is too big. I have a smaller one, but my hands are too large to hold it. Could you help me, please?”

“Yes, of course I can! I always help my mother around the house.” Jack started sweeping right away. The castle was very big, and sweeping it took a few hours. When Jack was done, the friendly woman gave him a glass of orange juice and some delicious cookies.

She said, “What can I give you in return for your help? Ah, I know! I will give you my hen, Sarah. She lays golden eggs. But you can only have her if you promise to visit once a month to help me sweep the corners of my castle.”

“That sounds like a good bargain. Thank you very much!”

Jack replied.

Jack took the chicken and carefully climbed down the beanstalk. His mother was very happy, and every time they needed something, Sarah laid a golden egg. Jack kept his promise and climbed the beanstalk once a month to sweep the friendly giant woman’s castle.

‘Tortoise and his shell’

Unknown

There was once a tortoise who lived alone in the veld. Every day he would watch the lions chase their prey, and the monkeys hopping around in the trees playing hide-and-seek, but Tortoise could only walk very slowly. This made him feel sad.

One morning, while Tortoise was chewing on some green grass, he had an idea. I cannot run fast because my shell is too heavy! If I crawl out of my shell, I will be able to run as fast as Hare, he thought.

So, he did just that. As soon as he crawled out of his shell, Tortoise ran off, shouting, “Look at me now! I can run fast!” He was very excited.

But can you guess what happened? As Tortoise ran down the path, he bumped into Hyena! Tortoise got a big fright!

He stopped, turned around, and ran back the way he came as fast as he could.

Do you know what Tortoise was thinking? Yes, he was thinking that Hyena was going to eat him! And he was right, Hyena was hungry and chased after Tortoise.

“Hee-hee-hee!” Hyena laughed as he ran. Tortoise was more scared than ever! He ran off the path and hid behind a big rock. Hyena did not see Tortoise hiding and ran on.

When Hyena had gone, Tortoise came out from behind the rock and ran. It was not long before he heard a noise.

He looked up, and there was Eagle! What do you think Eagle was planning? Of course! He wanted to eat Tortoise. Again, Tortoise ran as fast as he could. He saw a tree with a hole in it, and he dived into the hole. Tortoise made sure Eagle was gone before he slowly crept out of the hole.

Tortoise was unhappy. Why would he be unhappy? His wish had come true, he was running fast. Yes, he was unhappy because he was scared all the time. He had no shell to hide in. A storm brought rain and a cold wind blew over the veld. Soon Tortoise was wet and shivering. He did not like this at all. Now he was very unhappy. What do you think he did next?

Yes, he crawled back into his strong shell and said, “I don’t care about running fast. I am a tortoise. I am happy to be me!” To this day, tortoises cannot take off their shells.
