Part 6: Bitsy and the big race
Everyone in the village now knows that Bitsy won the race against Rondo. Some of the other gnomes try to catch sparrows as well, but none of them are as fast as Hop.
One day, a messenger gnome from a neighbouring village arrives at the big fig tree. THWACK! THWACK! THWACK!
The messenger nails a notice to the tree. Bitsy and his friends are curious and crowd around the tree to read what it says.
“What does it say, Bitsy?” asks Rosy.
“It’s an invitation to a bird race in Oak Tree Village!” says Bitsy excitedly. He and Rondo cannot wait! They have the two fastest birds and will definitely enter the race.
Activity 51: Comprehension test SAMPLE
After weeks of preparation, the big day finally arrives. Many gnomes make their way to the racetrack in the middle of the forest. They carry picnic baskets and talk happily. Everywhere, birds are chirping excitedly. While all the racers and spectators are getting ready for the races, dark clouds are rolling in, but no one notices.
The racers are ready for take off, but just then, the first large raindrops plop onto the ground. It is too dangerous to fly in the rain. Some racers get off their birds and find cover under big leaves.
“Oh, come on! It’s only a few drops,” Rondo says and gets ready for take off.
“Bitsy! You cannot fly in the rain!” Rosy is shouting at her brother, but he is determined to fly. He wants to win the race, no matter what.
“On your marks, get set, go!” shouts the race organiser. The birds take off, but the storm is now much worse. Huge drops fall on Hop’s head, and a strong wind forces him to close his eyes. For a moment, he cannot see; he flutters wildly and almost collides with a tree. Bitsy falls from Hop’s back and tumbles down, down, down. A large leaf breaks his fall, but he still lands on the muddy ground with a loud THUD! His arm aches. Bitsy looks up, but he cannot see anyone around him. Then, everything goes dark.

‘The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse’
A fable by Aesop
Once upon a time, a country mouse lived in a barn on a beautiful farm. His cousin was a town mouse who lived in the attic of a very fancy house. One day, Town Mouse decided to go on holiday.
“I’m tired of the hustle and bustle. I need some rest and peace,” he says, taking his bag from under the bed.
“Maybe I should visit my cousin, Country Mouse. The fresh air and sunshine will do me a lot of good.” He sets off down the road to Country Mouse’s house.
Country Mouse does not often get visitors, and he is very happy to see his cousin.
“Welcome! Please stay as long as you want. We’re going to have a lot of fun!” promises Country Mouse. “Come, let me show you the farm before supper.”
Just past the pond, they hear a loud WHOOSH! They look up to see an owl swooping down on them.
“Run, cousin, or you’re owl food tonight!” shouts Country Mouse. They hide in an old log and watch the owl fly by. Town Mouse trembles from head to toe. He is breathing fast, and his eyes are as wide as saucers.
“I was just looking for a little peace and quiet,” Town Mouse complains.
They go home to have supper. Country Mouse takes out mulberries, strawberries, and half an apple. He enjoys every bite. Town Mouse misses his jellies, cakes, bread, and ice cream. Country Mouse’s food give him a tummy ache.
“I was just looking for some rest, not a tummy ache,” Town Mouse complains. It’s bedtime, and Town Mouse rolls around on the uncomfortable straw bed.
“I was just looking for some peace and quiet without sleeping so hard,” he complains.
Early the next morning, they go out to find food. Town Mouse is not used to walking so far. They stop on a hill, and Town Mouse flops down in the grass.
“I was just looking for a little peace and quiet without climbing mountains in search of food,” he complains. “In town, I don’t have to look for food. We buy our food in shops. They have anything a mouse can ask for.”
“Really?” asks Country Mouse. “Town sounds like a nice place.”
“Come stay with me,” invites Town Mouse. “It’s a lot more fun than here on the farm. You’ll see!”
They pack their bags and hide on the farmer’s cart into town.
“My dear cousin, let me show you the wonders of the town,” says Town Mouse proudly.
Country Mouse stares at the carriages, the shops, and all the people!
“Watch out, cousin. You’ll be run over!” cries Town Mouse, snatching his cousin away in front of a horse coming down the street. Country Mouse trembles from head to toe. He is breathing fast, and his eyes are as wide as saucers.
SAMPLE
“I was just looking for a little peace and quiet,” Country Mouse complains.
It is supper time, and Town Mouse takes his cousin to a restaurant to eat jellies, cheese, sausages, and doughnuts. Country Mouse misses his mulberries, strawberries, and apples. He doesn’t like doughnuts; they make his tummy ache.
“I was just looking for some rest, not a tummy ache,” Country Mouse complains, rubbing his furry tummy.
At bedtime, Country Mouse cannot get comfortable on the large, soft bed.
“I was just looking for some peace and quiet without sleeping in such a silly bed,” he complains.
The next morning, the two mice want to go for a walk before breakfast. Two large green eyes stare at them when they open the front door! It’s the cat! He meows and licks his lips. For three days, the cat sits in front of the door. Soon, the mice have nothing left to eat. They are very hungry, but they do not dare go out.
On the fourth morning, the cat finally leaves. Country Mouse quickly packs his bags and runs down the street. He wants nothing to do with doughnuts, carriages, people, or cats! He jumps on the farmer’s cart and listens to the clop-clop-cloppity-clop of the horse’s hooves, taking him further away from town.
SAMPLE
Back home, Country Mouse eats his mulberries, strawberries, and apples. He thinks how lucky he is to have peace and quiet on the farm. In his attic, Town Mouse eats jellies, cheese, and sausages. He thinks how lucky he is to have so much peace and quiet in town.
But what neither knew is that you don’t have to go anywhere for some peace and quiet – you can find it right here at home.
