Part 10: A surprise on the porch
The days are getting shorter and the nights colder. The gnome village is ready for winter. Woodpiles are stacked next to houses to keep the fires burning. Gnomes who keep animals as pets have made comfortable nests and indoor cages.
As the last leaves fall, the gnomes close their doors. A freezing wind howls outside and snowflakes cover the ground. Bitsy is very happy about the snow. If it snows enough tonight, I can test my sledge in the morning, he thinks. He goes to bed straight after supper.
The next morning Bitsy is awake before anyone else. He peeks through the window and sees a thick layer of snow outside. He dresses warmly, pulls his woolly hat over his ears and makes sure his gloves fit nicely. He picks up his sledge and creeps to the front door. He tries to open the door, but it won’t open. There is something in the way, and it’s not the snow.
Bitsy wakes his father. He is grumpy, but gets up to see what is blocking the door. Eventually, they push it open. A mouse lies in front of the door. It is cold and shivering.
“We must help him!” Bitsy says. Gently, they carry the mouse inside and quickly close the door. Bitsy helps his dad to put more wood on the fire, while his mom hangs a pot over the fire to boil water. They look at each other. Mice are mostly wild and can do a lot of damage when they get into a house.
Some gnomes keep mice as working animals to help them dig holes to plant wheat or build new houses, but mostly they just live together in peace. Bitsy’s dad fetches a warm blanket and covers the shivering mouse.

Activity 87: Reading
‘The frog prince’
Once, a princess lived in a beautiful castle with her parents. Although they had many servants, they tried to teach her from an early age to make her bed, put her clothes away and help with chores in the palace. They tried to teach her to return her library books on time and to look after her crown so it wouldn’t get lost, but she simply ignored them. Asking nicely did not help, nor did punishment. The stubborn princess would just say, “I am tired of hearing, do this, do that, and keep quiet. Leave me alone so I can play. Find someone else to nag all day.”
She would grab her golden ball and go off to play in the palace garden. She spent hours looking at how the sun shone on the ball and the way it sparkled when she threw it in the air.
One day, while she was playing, the ball fell into a deep pond with a loud SPLASH! She could only watch as the ball disappeared under the water.
The princess sat down and cried. Suddenly, she heard a small voice.
“What is the matter, young lady?”
“Who said that?” The princess looked around but saw no one. “My golden ball fell into the pond, and now I will never see it again,” she sobbed.
“I can help you,” said the voice, and a frog plopped onto a lily pad.
“Yuck! Get away from me, you ugly, slimy frog!” Just in time, she remembered that the little frog might be able to help her.
“I am sorry. Will you please help me?” The princess wiped the tears from her face. “I will give you anything you want. Just find my precious golden ball.”
“Anything?” asked the frog.
“Yes, anything,” promised the princess. “What would you like?”
“Let me see ... I will fetch your ball if I’m allowed to sit at the table and dine with you. I want to sleep on your pillow, and you must promise to love me,” the frog said, counting his wishes one by one on his green toes.
“Yes, yes, I promise,” replied the princess. “Just hurry up and fetch my ball.”
SAMPLE
As the frog jumped into the pond, the arrogant princess decided that she did not have to keep a promise to a silly frog. As soon as the frog handed her the ball, she turned around and ran away.
That evening, when the princess and her parents were having dinner, the frog jumped through the window and landed on the table among the golden dishes. “You forgot your promise,” said the frog. He looked at the princess, and she knew he was telling the truth.
“You’re a horrible frog!” cried the girl. “I’ll never allow you to eat from my plate or sleep on my pillow! I will never, ever love you!”
“What is this, I hear?” asked the king, tired of his daughter’s behaviour.
“If you make a promise, you must keep your word.”
The princess started to complain, but the king wouldn’t listen.
“I’ve had enough of this. You do not care about anyone but yourself. If you keep behaving this way, you will see what will happen. Let the frog eat from your plate, or find somewhere else to live.”
“Fine, you can eat from my plate,” said the princess angrily. She moved her chair to the end of the table so the frog wouldn’t accidentally touch her.
“Father, this is too much! I cannot stand it!” She looked at the king, who gave her an angry stare.
“Now, take me to your room, and let me sleep on your pillow,” the frog ordered when he had finished his supper.
SAMPLE
“Is this really necessary?” the princess whined. Her father was not interested. “If you make a promise, you must keep it. Today, you will learn that lesson or find somewhere else to live,” the king threatened again.
“Fine, you can sleep on my pillow,” said the princess. She picked up the frog and carried him to her room. She placed him on the soft white pillow.
“This room is a mess!” said the frog. “Put your clothes in the cupboard and your washing in the laundry basket. Take your muddy shoes outside and the dirty dishes to the kitchen.”
“Excuse me?” exclaimed the princess.
“Oh, and gather your library books and fetch your crown from the garden. Or must I tell your father you would rather find another place to live?”
“No, don’t do that!” said the princess, quickly doing all her chores.
When she was done, the frog made himself comfortable on the pillow. “Now kiss me good night,” he said and pointed to his cheek.
“I will not!” cried the princess. “First, I had to do all those nasty chores, and now I must kiss you! Find someone else who will do that.”
“You promised to love me,” the frog warned. “Or must I tell your father that his daughter does not keep her promises?”
“All right,” sighed the princess. She closed her eyes, so she wouldn’t have to see the slimy frog and kissed him quickly.
“Open your eyes,” said a soft voice.
SAMPLE
The princess opened her eyes, and there stood the most handsome prince she had ever seen. “A witch turned me into a frog. The spell could only be broken if a beautiful princess kissed me.” He got down on one knee and asked the princess to marry him. The princess was grateful to the frog prince for teaching her many valuable lessons and she agreed to marry him. The royal cook baked a wedding cake with a golden ball on top.
The princess never feared frogs again. She faithfully did her chores and kept her promises. Everyone still wonders how the messy princess could become so responsible and whether the ball on the wedding cake was made out of gold.
