Ivan and his friends Ivan is in Grade 2 in teacher Renet’s class. She taught them to always be kind to others. Ivan is very popular and has many friends, but he does not play with everyone in the class. Peter is one of the children Ivan does not play with. Ivan does not like Peter – he thinks Peter is strange and does not want to mingle with him. Once during break, Peter asks whether he can play with Ivan and his friends. “Of course!” says Ivan because teacher Renet taught them to be kind. “Let’s play hide-and-seek. We can only hide around the rugby ±eld,” says Ivan. He decides that Peter is ‘it’. While Peter stands with his eyes closed, counting, Ivan and his friends run far away from the rugby ±eld. Ivan takes out a pack of cards and he and his friends begin playing. “Peter will be looking for a while!” laughs Ivan. The bell rings and everyone goes back to class. “Where were you? I looked everywhere!” says Peter. Ivan laughs and says, “We can play again during next break ...”

Activity 48: Animals that live in water Most shark species live in the sea. They are the hunters of the ocean and have ±ve rows of teeth! Although sharks sound dangerous, they are very important because they keep the ecosystem in balance. Some sharks do not hunt but only eat weak or dead ±sh. Sharks are classi±ed as ±sh, so they do not have lungs – they ‘breathe’ through their gills. Write the correct word in each block.

snout gills
Did you know? Sharks kill fewer than 10 people a year. Toasters kill more than 700 people a year, usually because those people use a knife to remove their toast. In shallow water, a shark may think you are a fish and bite you. When it tastes that you are not a fish, it will let go.

Bees are insects. They have a ___________________ with venom in their abdomen, which they use to protect the ____________________ or the queen bee. They have a very good sense of smell and look for ¶owers all day to collect nectar and pollen. Every bee colony has a _____________________. The ___________________ protect her with their lives. She lays eggs that become larvae, so new worker bees can be added to the colony. The worker bees feed the queen. Bees use rock crevices, caves, or trees in which to build their ___________________. There is usually just one entrance to the middle of the hive. The bees make ___________________ cells from beeswax in which to store nectar. Bees collect ___________________ and nectar from ___________________, which they store in the beehive. Nectar is the sweet liquid they ±nd in ¶owers. It is changed into honey, which is a sugar. Bees also eat some of the nectar. 53
